Today I’m bringing you a review of the movie El portal del más allá, whose original English title is Between Worlds, released in 2018. It stars Nicolas Cage and is directed by María Pulera. I admit I watched it out of curiosity, to see if the actor was on the path to redemption after his numerous flops.
Unfortunately, this movie wasn’t what I expected—it really disappointed me. The plot is pretty absurd; every element feels forced, creating chaos akin to a seven-headed monster, while Cage returns to his signature role as an expressionless alcoholic.

This is the story of Joe (Nicolas Cage), who is tormented by a family tragedy that occurred in his past and for which he feels responsible. Against this backdrop, a medium appears—a woman facing her own unique situation: her daughter is in a coma after an accident, and she needs to communicate with her to try to bring her back. Nicolas Cage as Joe Majors once again portrays someone whose life is a mess, typecast in roles as drunks who suffer various misfortunes, so he seems right at home in this performance. The actor continues his downward spiral after appearing as a promising star in Moonlighting, Leaving Las Vegas, and The Rock, but as the years passed, he was unable to solidify his career.
Franka Potente as Julie—even though much of the plot rests on her shoulders, her role isn’t believable and lacks development. She plays a psychic whose powers are so limited that she has no idea what she’s doing.
Penelope Mitchell as Billie—her performance is completely forgettable, and I didn’t find her believable either. I have a lot of issues with her portrayal; she comes across as a spoiled teenager with no purpose, when in reality she possesses the spirit of Joe’s wife.
Garrett Clayton as Mike, Billie’s boyfriend—his performance also lacks nuance and is rather poorly developed; he’s practically just window dressing.

This is, without a doubt, the worst Nicolas Cage movie I’ve ever seen; I think he’s really hit rock bottom here, acting in a carefree manner without putting much effort into it. The plot lacks coherence and makes no logical sense. The other performances also leave a lot to be desired—it’s a cast with no real ambition, and the film is mediocre; even the special effects are pathetic.
In short, it has a very weak plot and is terribly executed. Nothing that happens is believable; from the very first scene, you’re tempted to walk out. I only stayed to see where such nonsense would take me—just as I did with Ghost Rider 2, when I promised myself I’d never watch another Cage movie again.
The medium was supposed to be the most important character, but here she comes across as weak, with little impact on the story and lacking the traits someone with that gift should have; it’s a role with no development. The love triangle among the main characters is weak; there’s no tension, and it even seems as though none of them wants to stand out from the rest—they just want to get paid and leave. A forgettable movie.
