I’m back with a new review, this time of the 2007 film The Messengers, starring Kristen Stewart—the famous Bella from the Twilight saga—which was released a year later and catapulted her to stardom.
From the very first scene, the film sets the tone with horror, deaths, and apparitions that make the movie’s intent clear—a preview of what’s to come as the story unfolds—so I settled in to enjoy this movie.
Synopsis
The Solomon family—comprising Jessica, her little brother, and their parents—moves to a secluded farm in the hope that the sunflower crop will help secure their future, but things start to go awry when strange events begin to occur.
Jessica has recurring hallucinations and senses that something is wrong with the house, to the point where she thinks ghosts want to take her away. She’s afraid, but she also wants to know what happened to the Robins family, the former residents of the place.
Cast
Kristen Stewart plays Jessica, the eldest daughter—a withdrawn and distracted character—a role she embodies very well. She has an aura of fragility and innocence that would later be fully realized in the Twilight saga. The entire weight of The Messenger rests on Stewart, and she delivers a solid performance.
For his part, Theodore Turner plays the three-year-old boy who can see the apparitions inside the house—and even play with them—but does not speak; he only makes sounds, due to a previous car accident. This reinforces the idea that children’s innocence grants them access to the realm of the unknown and the illogical. Turner’s performance focuses on body language, and through this approach, he conveys emotions without uttering a word.
As for Dylan McDermott and Penelope Ann Miller, who play the parents, their performances are believable, especially when it comes to raising a teenager with antisocial behavior and a traumatized child.

Las apariciones espectrales y sucesos inexplicables aún fascinan a las personas y por tal razón se siguen produciendo películas basadas en estos temas, siendo Los Mensajeros una de ellas. Esta película me gustó porque me mantuvo atenta durante todo el desarrollo.
