The Premise: The story follows Jang Ok-ju, a former bodyguard who is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, weapons, marksmanship, and motorcycle riding. Although she appears emotionally distant, she shares a close friendship with Choi Min-hee, a professional ballerina. Min-hee’s life is destroyed by Choi Pro, a dangerous man involved in sexual exploitation and blackmail. After Min-hee dies, Ok-ju discovers a final request asking her to take revenge. From that point, Ok-ju begins a personal mission to find Choi Pro and make him pay for what he did.

The Story Review.

Ok-ju is introduced in a striking opening sequence where she casually dismantles a group of armed robbers in a convenience store using whatever is at hand (including canned goods). She’s skilled, detached, and emotionally shut down — a woman who treats violence as routine work. Her only connection to the world is Min-hee. When she arrives at Min-hee’s apartment and finds her dead, with a note asking for revenge on “Choi Pro,” the mission becomes personal.Ok-ju digs into Min-hee’s life and uncovers a network of sexual exploitation: Choi (Kim Ji-hoon) drugs women, films them, and uses the footage for blackmail and control. Min-hee was one of his victims. What follows is a straightforward but efficiently paced hunt. Ok-ju methodically works her way up the chain — from low-level enablers to Choi himself and the people above him. The film intercuts the present-day revenge path with flashbacks that show the warmth of Ok-ju and Min-hee’s friendship, giving the violence emotional weight rather than pure spectacle.IMDb

Action and Visual Style. One of the strongest features of Ballerina is its visual presentation. The movie uses neon lighting, dark interiors, empty roads, nightclubs, warehouses, and colourful city locations to create a stylish atmosphere. The beauty of the images often contrasts sharply with the brutality of the violence.Jeon Jong-seo gives Ok-ju a quiet but intimidating presence. She does not constantly explain her emotions; instead, her grief is communicated through her facial expressions, movements, and increasingly violent choices.

This makes her feel more like a wounded person than a conventional superhero.The action scenes include gunfights, knife combat, hand-to-hand battles, motorcycle sequences, and close-range confrontations. The film’s violence is direct and sometimes graphic, but its presentation is carefully choreographed and visually polished.

Main Performances.

Jeon Jong-seo as Jang Ok-ju. Jeon Jong-seo carries the movie with a controlled and intense performance. Ok-ju speaks little, but her body language communicates anger, sadness, fear, and determination. Her transformation from grieving friend to relentless avenger forms the emotional centre of the film.

Kim Ji-hoon as Choi Pro. Kim Ji-hoon plays the villain with a disturbing mixture of charm and cruelty. His character is not physically threatening in every scene, but his manipulation and criminal network make him dangerous. The contrast between his confident personality and his disgusting actions makes him an effective antagonist.

Park Yu-rim as Choi Min-hee. Although Min-hee appears mainly through memories and earlier scenes, Park Yu-rim gives the character warmth and humanity. Her relationship with Ok-ju helps the audience understand why the revenge mission matters so deeply.

One thing I enjoyed about Ballerina is the contrast between Min-hee’s graceful world of ballet and Ok-ju’s brutal world of combat. The movie is beautifully filmed, but beneath the stylish action is a painful story about friendship, exploitation, guilt, and the search for justice.The story is not the most complex, and some characters could have been developed better. However, the action scenes are entertaining, the visuals are excellent, and the lead performance keeps the movie engaging.

For the Scrobblelife crowd: this is a classic log it, rate it, move on with a smile watch. It is the kind of film that feels great in the moment, looks sharp on a big screen and pairs well with late-night viewing.
