[Movie] Strange Darling Review (2023): The Thriller That Completely Flips the Script on You.

Review by @zusi78 🏆#175 🎵14 🎬2 📺3 · 1h · of Strange Darling

Genre. A psychological thriller with strong horror and erotic thriller elements. It’s a tense, stylish cat-and-mouse story full of mind games, danger, sharp dialogue, and a major twist that changes everything.

Directed by:JT Mollner.

The Premise. A woman known as “The Lady” and a man known as “The Demon” meet in rural Oregon for a one-night stand. What begins as a charged, risky encounter quickly turns violent and chaotic.

The film is told in six chapters that are deliberately shown out of order. This structure keeps you constantly questioning what is really happening and who is truly in control. Early on, you see a frantic chase:

a bloodied woman running for her life while a threatening man pursues her. The movie makes you believe one thing, until it reveals the truth.

The big twist. The most interesting part of the movie is; the person I thought was the villain is not. The Lady is actually the serial killer (known as the Electric Lady). The Demon is the one who was targeted, and he is now chasing her after she tried to kill him. This complete reversal of who is the predator and who is the prey is the heart of the movie and lands extremely well. Alongside the twist, the film shines in two areas you would particularly love: the intense, layered conversations between The Lady and The Demon, and the gripping, high-energy chase sequences that keep the tension high throughout.

My Detailed Review. Strange Darling is the kind of movie that plays a very clever game with its audience — and wins. From the start, it sets up a familiar thriller situation: a woman in danger being hunted by a dangerous man. The non-linear storytelling (jumping between chapters out of order) keeps you slightly off-balance, but never in a confusing way. Each new section adds information that forces you to re-think what you just saw. By the time the full picture comes together, the revelation that The Lady is the real antagonist hits hard and feels earned. What makes the film special is how well it balances style, tension, and character.

The conversations between The Lady and The Demon are excellent — full of tension, flirtation, power plays, and underlying threat. They feel alive and unpredictable, which makes their relationship the emotional and psychological core of the story. The chase sequences are equally strong. They are tense, well-shot, and properly exciting. You feel the danger and desperation in every moment of pursuit.

Willa Fitzgerald(as The Lady) delivers a standout performance. She has to shift between vulnerable, calculating, and menacing, and she does it with complete control.

Kyle Gallner matches her energy as The Demon, bringing intensity and unpredictability that keeps their dynamic interesting. Visually, the movie looks great. It was shot on real 35mm film, giving it a rich, cinematic texture that many modern thrillers lack. The rural Oregon setting feels isolated and atmospheric, and the music supports the twisted mood perfectly. At just 96 minutes, the film moves at a strong pace. It never overstays its welcome. The violence is impactful, the tension is consistent, and the big structural trick is handled with real skill. This is not a deep, complicated art film. It is a sharp, entertaining, and highly effective thriller that respects the audience’s intelligence while still delivering genuine surprises. If you enjoy movies that keep you guessing and then reward you with a satisfying payoff, this one works extremely well.

For My Scrobblelife Community. This is a really good one for the Scrobblelife community. It’s a smart, stylish thriller with a clever structure and a big twist that hits hard if you go in blind. The conversations between the two leads are sharp and the chase scenes are exciting. It is short, well-made, and gives people plenty to talk about after watching. Perfect for recommendation threads and those “just watched it” posts.

High rewatch value — once you know The Lady is the real antagonist,a second viewing shows just how carefully the film set everything up. Short runtime, stylish presentation, and a clear talking-point twist make it easy to recommend and discuss. Great for lists like Thrillers that actually surprise you or Movies with clever structure. If you have not seen it yet, go in as cold as possible.
