I watched What Happened to Monday and it kept me interested from start to finish. It’s a science-fiction action movie set in a dark future, and while it’s not perfect, the main idea is strong and Noomi Rapace’s performance really stands out.
What really caught my attention and got me hooked was the scene where one of the sisters sneaks out to go skateboarding, gets injured, and loses a finger. Their grandfather then has to cut the same finger off the other six sisters so they all stay identical whenever one of them goes outside. That part was mind-boggling.
Genre:This is a dystopian sci-fi thriller. Set in a harsh future world controlled by a strict government, mixed with action, mystery, and some violence.
Directed by:Tommy Wirkola.
Premise. The year is 2073. The world is overcrowded and food is running out. Because of this, the government forces every family to have only one child. Any extra children are taken away by a group called the Child Allocation Bureau and locked up forever.
Against this rule, a grandfather named Terrence raises seven identical granddaughters in secret after their mother dies giving birth.
He names them after the days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. To stay hidden from the government, all seven sisters pretend to be the same person — a woman named Karen Settman. Only one sister is allowed to leave the house each day, on the day that matches her name. The others stay locked inside. Every night they tell each other what happened so the shared identity stays perfect.
The big question is simple: How long can seven people live as one before everything falls apart?
The Story.
The system works for years. Then one Monday, the sister who left for work never comes home. The other sisters start looking for her. What begins as a simple search quickly turns into a fight for survival. The government is closing in, secrets start coming out, and the sisters must work together while also dealing with their own differences.
The movie keeps moving with chases, fights, and plenty of surprises. It looks at family loyalty, personal identity, and how far people will go to protect the ones they love. I found the first half smart and interesting. In the second half it becomes more of a standard action thriller. I enjoyed the constant energy, though I felt some of the bigger ideas got a bit lost under the action. A few parts of the story don’t fully add up if you think about them too hard, but the central mystery of what happened to Monday stayed strong enough to keep me hooked until the end.
The Actors.
Noomi Rapace is the star — and she has to be, because she plays all seven sisters.
She gives each one a different personality through the way she talks, moves, and acts. One is tougher, one is quieter, one is more rebellious. Watching her share scenes with multiple versions of herself is the most impressive part of the movie. It is a hard job and she pulls it off well.
Willem Dafoe plays the grandfather with quiet strength and care.
Glenn Close is cold and powerful as the head of the government bureau.
Marwan Kenzari plays a government agent who becomes more important as the story goes on. The supporting actors do solid work, but this is really Noomi Rapace’s movie.
Final Word For My Scrobblelife Audience. What Happened to Monday is a solid, entertaining sci-fi thriller with a clever setup and a standout performance from Noomi Rapace. It is not a deep masterpiece, but it is never boring. If you like future stories about strict governments, strong female characters who can fight, or movies where one actor plays many roles, this is worth watching. Watch it for the big idea and for Noomi Rapace. She will keep you interested even when the plot gets a little messy. Seven sisters living as one person under a cruel system — it is a tense and watchable ride.
