Hoy me puse a ver mi watchlist de Letterboxd y encontré la película 17 Again protagonizada por Zac Efron y Matthew Perry es una película bastante vieja del año 2009 que nos cuenta una historia peculiar sobre un joven que ve frustrado su futuro al no poder ir a la universidad y que crece con la idea de que se siente un fracasado pero todo cambia cuando un momento decisivo lo lleva a volver a su cuerpo de 17 años para poder esta vez cambiar el destino de su vida tanto para bien como para mal, cualquier cosa podria pasar no? Así que los invito a leer mi reseña y opinión sobre esta película de género comedia y fantasía 💫

Today I started to watch my Letterboxd watchlist and I found the movie 17 Again starring Zac Efron and Matthew Perry is a pretty old movie from 2009 that tells us a peculiar story about a young man who sees his future frustrated by not being able to go to college and grows up with the idea that he feels like a failure but everything changes when a decisive moment leads him to return to his body of 17 years to be able this time to change the fate of his life both for better and for worse, anything could happen no? So I invite you to read my review and opinion about this comedy and fantasy genre movie 💫

   La historia de 17 Again nos cuenta la vida de un joven llamado Mike O'Donnell interpretado por Zac Efron. Mike es un gran jugador de baloncesto y esta preparándose para el juego que le dará la beca que tanto a deseado para poder ir a la universidad y lograr ser un gran jugador, mientras que tiene una relación con una joven llamada Scarlet (Leslie Mann) quién en el último juego le confiesa que no quiere destruir su futuro ya que ahora se encuentra embarazada y que desea que el continúe con su vida sin ella a su lado, pero Mike no pretende perder a la persona que ama y decide ir detrás de Scarlet lo que lo lleva a perder el gran juego que definiría su futuro y ahora con el pasar de los años se ha convertido en un hombre malhumorado y que se siente un fracasado. A pesar de tener una familia de dos hijos y su relación con Scarlet, la vida que lleva no es algo que el hubiera deseado al menos no esperaba convertirse en el típico hombre de negocios en una empresa que no valora su trabajo.

   The story of 17 Again tells the life of a young man named Mike O'Donnell played by Zac Efron. Mike is a great basketball player and is preparing for the game that will give him the scholarship he has wanted so much to go to college and become a great player, while he has a relationship with a young woman named Scarlet (Leslie Mann) who in the last game confesses that she does not want to destroy his future because she is now pregnant and wants him to continue his life without her by his side, But Mike does not want to lose the person he loves and decides to go after Scarlet which leads him to lose the big game that would define his future and now over the years he has become a grumpy man who feels like a failure. Despite having a family of two children and his relationship with Scarlet, the life he leads is not something he would have wanted, at least he didn't expect to become a typical businessman in a company that doesn't value his work.

   Ahora que Mike se encuentra en una crisis existencial y de tener una crisis matrimonial y además de eso perder su trabajo, desea con todas sus fuerzas el poder regresar en el tiempo y tener 17 otra vez, así que como por arte de magia en una visita al instituto dónde estudian sus dos hijos se encuentra con un viejo conserje quien le saca conversación y Mike le cuenta que si pudiera regresaría en el tiempo y cambiaría las cosas. Luego en una noche de lluvia de regreso a su hogar Mike ve a lo lejos a un señor al borde de un puente con la intención de quitarse la vida, el muy asustado se baja del auto y lo sigue hasta que ve cómo el hombre se lanza y el en un intento por ayudarlo pierde el equilibrio y cae al agua, lo siguiente que pasa es que se despierta con el cuerpo de 17 años en la casa de su mejor amigo Ned (Thomas Lennon) quién al comienzo se siente asustado pero luego ambos deciden guardar el secreto y tratar de ver como solucionan esta situación que esta viviendo Mike.

   Now that Mike is in an existential crisis and having a marital crisis and in addition to that losing his job, he wishes with all his strength to be able to go back in time and have 17 again, so as if by magic on a visit to the institute where his two children study he meets an old janitor who makes conversation and Mike tells him that if he could go back in time and change things. Then on a rainy night on his way home Mike sees in the distance a man on the edge of a bridge with the intention of taking his own life, the very scared gets out of the car and follows him until he sees how the man throws himself and in an attempt to help him loses his balance and falls into the water, the next thing that happens is that he wakes up with the body of 17 years in the house of his best friend Ned (Thomas Lennon) who at first is scared but then both decide to keep the secret and try to see how to solve this situation that Mike is living.

   Uno de los aspectos más destacados de la película es la relación entre Mike y su antiguo amor, Scarlet. Leslie Mann interpreta a Scarlet de manera brillante, transmitiendo a la perfección la mezcla de emociones que su personaje experimenta al reencontrarse con Mike. A medida que la historia avanza, nos damos cuenta de que Mike no solo busca cambiar su propio destino, sino también el de Scarlet, quien también está luchando por encontrar su felicidad. La película aborda temas como el arrepentimiento, la importancia de las segundas oportunidades y el valor de la amistad.    One of the highlights of the film is the relationship between Mike and his former love, Scarlet. Leslie Mann plays Scarlet brilliantly, perfectly conveying the mix of emotions her character experiences upon reuniting with Mike. As the story progresses, we realize that Mike is not only looking to change his own destiny, but also that of Scarlet, who is also struggling to find her happiness. The film addresses themes such as regret, the importance of second chances and the value of friendship. Through Mike's story, it teaches us that no matter how much we want to change the past, the most important thing is to accept our decisions and learn from them. It also shows us the importance of self-acceptance and self-confidence, fundamental aspects to find happiness and personal fulfillment.

   Está película me pareció divertida y me gustó la forma en la que muestran desde la historia de Mike O'Donnell donde a medida que vuelve a vivir su vida de adolescente podemos ver las lecciones que aprendió, una de ellas fue que comprendió que es importante valorar las relaciones familiares recordando a su esposa y a sus hijos y los malos encuentros o la poca importancia que les daba. También aprende a asumir la responsabilidad sobre sus propias acciones, nadie lo obligó a abandonar su sueño incluso su esposa Scarlet le dió la opción de que siguiera con su vida y que no se preocupara por ella y por el hijo que estaba en su vientre, así que el siempre vio esto cómo ser responsable de sus acciones pero a la vez se sentía miserable y se los hacía saber a sus hijos y a su esposa todo el tiempo con su actitud. Al volver a ser un adolescente, Mike se da cuenta de que no debe tratar de ser alguien que no es para encajar o impresionar a los demás. Aprende a aceptarse a sí mismo y a ser auténtico, lo que le permite construir relaciones más sanas. Es una película con un buen mensaje y me gustó que agregaran momentos de tensión y a la vez de diversión a la historia, tal vez no sea la mejor película pero está agradable para ver en un fin de semana.

   I found this movie funny and I liked the way they show from the story of Mike O'Donnell where as he relives his life as a teenager we can see the lessons he learned, one of them was that he understood that it is important to value family relationships remembering his wife and his children and the bad encounters or the little importance he gave them. He also learns to take responsibility for his own actions, no one forced him to give up his dream even his wife Scarlet gave him the option to go on with his life and not worry about her and the child in her womb, so he always saw this as being responsible for his actions but at the same time he felt miserable and let his children and wife know it all the time with his attitude. As he becomes a teenager again, Mike realizes that he should not try to be someone he is not in order to fit in or impress others. He learns to accept himself and be authentic, which allows him to build healthier relationships. It's a movie with a good message and I liked that they added moments of tension yet fun to the story, it may not be the best movie but it's nice to watch on a weekend.

   Say what you will about this being a cheesy, typical rom com mixed in with teenage romance mixed in with divorce sadness. I know, it's been done a million times before but I guess you could say that I am one of those people that thinks that this "typical plot line" when done correctly, simply works. 17 again ticks all the boxes of humor, bravado, and touching family moments that I look for in this type of film and it hit me right in the "feels." I like it and once again disagree with the 50-60% review score that it has on many popular movie review sites.

   To be fair, this film has got much higher ratings than a lot of the other ones that have traveled down this well-trodden plot road and I truly think it is deserved because it doesn't go too far down any one particular road. It isn't a slapstick comedy, it isn't a full-on teenage drama, nor is it overly sappy.

   But it also does involve some sort of magic that doesn't really exist in the other ones... ok nevermind a lot of them involved magic as well.

   The trailer I saw for the film features Matthew Perry (Chandler from Friends) in it prominently and I figured he was going to be the star of it. As it turns out Perry is in very little of the film outside of the intro and outro because he gets magically transformed into his 17 year old self in the first 15 minutes of the film.

   The story behind all of this is that Mike O'Donnell (Perry) had a really bright future as a basketball star but he tossed that all away in order to marry his high-school sweetheart who he has gotten pregnant. We all know that there would have been a fantastic opportunity for him to both marry his sweetheart AND go to college on the scholarship, but the film presents it as an either or scenario so we just have to take that at face value.

   Years later he has 2 kids and a wife and a boring job that he hates and try as he may he can't seem to stop blaming all of that on the one choice he made when he was 17 to abandon his dreams of basketball stardom to be with his girl. Before he gets zapped back in time to his old body, he is beginning divorce proceedings with his wife, Scarlet (played by Leslie Mann)

   He is the only person who gets transformed to his 17 year old self, everyone else remains the same including his two teenage children who he ends up attending school with.

   Some of the best humor comes from something that I think all of us can relate to as we get older: We are completely out of touch with what is "cool" to kids today and even though he returns to his attractive, athletic, Zac Efron body, he is completely out of touch with today's youth in how he talks, how he dresses, and just overall how he is. Therefore he struggles to be one of the cool kids.

   He does eventually emerge as a basketball star (as we expect right from the start) and the movie doesn't exactly take any twists that you don't see coming from a mile away. Sure, it's predictable and normally that sort of thing bothers me, but the family emotion that comes out in O'Donnell's eventual realization that the things that he feels are most important in life are the things he had all along.

   Should I watch it?

   If you are the type of person that is going to groan when a plot-line isn't something truly unique then I would say "no" you shouldn't because you are unlikely to enjoy it. For the most part, I too do not enjoy unoriginal films like this but every now and them I am in the mood for a heartwarming film that shows the importance of family...and i think that is something that most of us are guilty of forgetting from time to time. I got choked up a few times and found it really entertaining even though I knew exactly what was going to happen at basically all times.

   Ya han pasado varios años desde el estreno de esta película y aún tiene un "je ne sais quoi",que volviendo a ver hoy en día, lo disfruté. Y es cierto que está lleno de clichés por todos lados, pero aunque parezca raro no molestan y ayudan a narrar la historia.

   Several years have passed since the premiere of this film and it still has a "je ne sais quoi", which I rewatch today, I enjoyed it. And it is true that it is full of clichés everywhere, but although it seems strange they do not bother and help to tell the story.

   El enfoque de la película me pareció que estuvo bien, con un humor disfrutable y que no se queda estancado meramente en el género adolescente, tocando problemáticas más para todas las edades.

   The approach of the film seemed to me that it was good, with an enjoyable humor and that it does not remain stuck merely in the adolescent genre, touching more problems for all ages.

   ¿A quien no le gustaría volver al pasado para volver a tomar nuevamente las decisiones que marcaron su vida? Pues me imagino que a todo el mundo y más si se nos permiten volver a vivir o cambiar las que fueron cruciales, como una pareja que nos marco, la carrera universitaria que escogimos, entre otras cosas.

   Who would not like to go back to the past to make the decisions that marked his life again? Well, I imagine that everyone and more if we are allowed to live again or change those that were crucial, such as a couple that marked us, the university career we chose, among other things.

   En cuanto a los protagonistas, Zack Efron se lleva todos los reflectores, siendo utilizado además ya que en ese momento explotaba como actor de la mano de las películas de Disney. Matthew Perry también protagoniza a un Mike adulto y pues siento que le faltaron más escenas para brillar. También vemos otra cara super reconocida como lo es Leslie Mann.

   As for the protagonists, Zack Efron takes all the spotlights, also being used since at that time he exploded as an actor from the hand of Disney movies. Matthew Perry also stars as an adult Mike and I feel like he lacked more scenes to shine. We also see another super recognized face such as Leslie Mann.

   Para concluir es una buena película, que sirve para pasar un buen rato y de paso te sacará unas cuantas risas, y lo mejor es que a pesar de ser predecible, es algo mejor de lo que te puedes esperar.

   To conclude, it is a good movie, which serves to have a good time and incidentally will get you a few laughs, and the best thing is that despite being predictable, it is something better than you can expect.
