For me, checking the Filmaffinity website or some Instagram accounts dedicated to cinema is the equivalent of visiting a bookstore or a library: I end up adding dozens of titles to my endless to-do list and some of them get lost in the list until they emerge by chance years later. I don't know exactly how long ago I had this movie to see, but I think it's been at least two years.

Para mí, revisar el portal de Filmaffinity o algunas cuentas de Instagram dedicadas a cine es el equivalente a visitar una librería o una biblioteca: acabo agregando decenas de títulos a mi interminable lista de pendientes y algunos de ellos se van perdiendo en el listado hasta que emergen por casualidad años más tarde. No sé hace cuánto tiempo exactamente que tenía esta película por ver, pero creo que por lo menos han sido dos años.

At first I only knew that Andrew Garfield worked and that together with Under the Silver Lake they were almost the only films of his that I had not seen at that time. Then, looking around a bit, I found out that the plot was related to the 2008 housing crisis in the US and that Laura Dern (a tremendous actress, an Oscar winner) and Michael Shannon, who may be my supporting actor, also acted alongside Garfield. I think Shannon always lives up to the assigned role and on more than one occasion he ends up shining as much or more than the protagonist. Thus, in a few lines, I have already given you three good reasons for wanting to see the film, but to finish convincing you, I will tell you a few more things and I will tell you that although it is a dramatic film, it has some somewhat happier scenes and sequences or quite suspensefully which speaks well of the script, written by director Ramin Bahrani whom very few of you will have heard of. The truth is I didn't remember his name, but I did remember the name of one of his films that I also have on the list - and it's been longer than the one I'm reviewing - called Goodbye Solo.

En principio sólo sabía que trabajaba Andrew Garfield y que junto con Under the Silver Lake eran casi las únicas películas suyas que no había visto para ese momento. Luego, revisando un poco, supe que la trama guardaba relación con la crisis inmobiliaria de 2008 en EEUU y que junto a Garfield actuaban también Laura Dern (una tremenda actriz, ganadora del Oscar) y Michael Shannon, quien tal vez se mi actor de reparto favorito porque creo que siempre está a la altura del papel asignado y en más de una oportunidad acaba brillando tanto o más que el protagonista. Así, en pocas líneas, ya les he dado tres buenas razones para querer ver la película, pero para acabar de covencerlos les contaré algunas cosas más y les diré que si bien se trata de una película dramática tiene algunas escenas y secuencias un tanto más alegres o con bastante suspenso lo que habla bien del guión, escrito por el director Ramin Bahrani de quien muy pocos de ustedes habrán oído hablar. La verdad yo no recordaba su nombre, pero sí el de una de sus películas que también tengo en lista - y hace más tiempo que esta que estoy reseñando - llamada Goodbye Solo.

Before telling you about the plot of the film as such, I would like to explain some situations and terms of the social, legal and historical context in which the events take place so that you can understand a little why the role played by each one of the two men on whom the story focuses becomes so dramatic.

Antes de contarles sobre la trama de la película como tal me gustaría explicar algunas situaciones y términos del contexto social, legal e histórico en el que se desarrollan los hechos para que puedan comprender un poco el por qué se hace tan dramático el papel que juega cada uno de los dos hombres en quienes se centra la historia.

Rick Carver (Shannon)

Basically there are two ways to obtain a loan: either you borrow money from the bank to buy a house; Or you ask the bank for a loan by placing your house (already your own) as a guarantee for the payment of that loan. So in both cases, the bank releases you a large amount of money in exchange for installments that you must pay monthly, with interest, for twenty or thirty years. The issue is that when you start to fall behind in payments and you are notified and time passes and you cannot solve the situation, the property passes into the hands of your creditor. In other words, at that point you are no longer the owner of the house, but it becomes the property of the bank that lent you the money. Well, we all understand that not paying the fees for something you occupy can bring the logical consequence of losing that thing, right? but losing your car and having to use public transportation or having to be without a vehicle for a few months is not the same as losing the roof over your head, the house that in some cases has been your family's home for your entire life. People who can't keep paying on their house or who fall behind on their payments, when notified that they must vacate the house, that is, the one that until recently was their house, go into denial and the eviction can become very unpleasant.

Básicamente hay dos formas de obtener un crédito: o bien le pides dinero prestado al banco para comprar una casa; o bien le pides un préstamo al banco colocando tu casa (ya propia) como garantía del pago de ese préstamo. Así que en ambos casos el banco te suelta una gran cantidad de dinero a cambio de cuotas que deberás pagar mensualmente, con intereses, durante veinte o treinta años. El tema es que cuando comienzas a retrasarte en los pagos y se te notifica y el tiempo pasa y no lográs solventar la situación, el inmueble pasa a manos de tu acreedor. Es decir, en ese punto ya no eres dueño de la vivienda sino que esta pasa a ser del banco que te prestó el dinero. Bien, todos entendemos que no pagar las cuotas de algo que ocupas puede traer la consecuencia lógica de perder esa cosa, ¿cierto? pero no es lo mismo perder tu auto y tener que utilizar transporte público o tener que estar sin vehículo durante algunos meses, que perder el techo sobre tu cabeza, la casa que en algunos casos ha sido el hogar de tu familia durante toda tu vida. Las personas que no pueden seguir pagando su casa o que se retrasan en los pagos, al ser notificados de que deben desalojar la vivienda, es decir la que hasta hace poco era su vivienda, entran en negación y el desalojo puede volverse muy desagradable.

Obviously someone has to represent the bank and go on its behalf to carry out the eviction - supported by the authorities, of course, because there are trials, sentences, laws - and it is dirty, uncomfortable work, a bit insensitive if you like, but someone's gotta do it. That's where Rick Carver (Michael Shannon) comes in, a man who was an ordinary real estate agent, but who - according to his words - the crisis transformed into an eviction agent (they became daily bread at that time). Precisely in one of those evictions, his fate comes across Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield), a construction worker with job instability who must leave the house where he grew up and where he lives with his son and his mother (Laura Dern). Due to a series of events that take place from there, Dennis ends up working in one of Rick's gangs and little by little he offers him more and more responsibilities - and of course more money - and ends up turning Dennis into an eviction agent. That twist also adds to the drama of the movie because Dennis will soon find himself on the opposite side of the situation: now he's the one who has to get people out of their homes. In the midst of his despair, he has sold his soul to the devil.

Obviamente alguien tiene que representar al banco y acudir en su nombre a ejecutar el desalojo - apoyados por las autoridades, por supuesto, porque hay juicios, sentencias, leyes - y es un trabajo sucio, incómodo, un poco insensible si se quiere, pero alguien tiene que hacerlo. Es ahí donde entra Rick Carver (Michael Shannon) un hombre que era un agente de bienes raíces común y corriente, pero que - según sus palabras - la crisis transformó en un agente de desalojos (llegaron a ser el pan de cada día en esa época). Precisamente en uno de esos desalojos su destino se cruza con Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield), un trabajador de la construcción con inestabilidad laboral que debe abandonar la casa en la que creció y en la que vive con su hijo y su madre (Laura Dern). Por una serie de eventos que suceden a partir de allí Dennis acaba trabajando en una de las cuadrillas de Rick y poco a poco éste le ofrece más y más reponsabilidades - y por supuesto más dinero - y acaba transformando a Dennis en agente de desalojo. Ese giro también incrementa el drama de la película porque Dennis se verá pronto en el lado opuesto de la situación: ahora es él quien debe sacar a las personas de sus casas. En medio de su desesperación, le ha vendido el alma al diablo.

Rick seems to be cold, ruthless, has had time to harden; Dennis is new to homework and is also a gentle man, a loving father and a sweet son. And it is precisely that sweet character that will put him in the middle of important moral dilemmas in which he will have to evaluate and choose between what is best for him and his family or what is right, beyond what the law dictates. Then to that family and social drama is added some violence, a lot of corruption, ambition, inequality, despair, questioning, and various emotions that make the film go by in a breath and keep us absorbed in the plot. Rick parece ser frío, despiadado, ha tenido tiempo para endurecerse; Dennis es novato en la tarea y además es un hombre gentil, un padre amoroso y un hijo dulce. Y es precisamente ese carácter dulce lo que lo pondrá en medio de dilemas morales importantes en los que tendrá que evaluar y escoger entre lo mejor para él y para su familia o lo que es correcto, más allá de lo que dicta la ley. Entonces a ese drama familiar y social se suma algo de violencia, mucha corrupción, ambición, desigualdad, desesperación, cuestionamientos, y diversas emociones que hacen que la película pase en un suspiro y nos mantenga absorbidos en la trama. Para quienes disfrutan de las buenas actuaciones o de los dramas sociales 99 Homes es una gran recomendación, ¿alguno de ustedes la ha visto? Los leo en los comentarios.
