    Hello!

A Certain Magical Index is a Japanese light novel series written by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Kiyotaka Haimura.

    A-Certain-Magical-Index-3-foi-confirmado-.webp Ref: https://www.otakupt.com/anime/a-certain-magical-index-3-foi-confirmado/

A Certain Magical Index is set in a world where supernatural abilities are a reality. Individuals who possess special powers acquired via science are called Espers. Those Espers who gain their abilities without the aid of special scientific instruments, whether at birth or otherwise, are referred to as Gemstones. Others, known as Sorcerers, gain their powers upon mastering the power of magic, either from obtaining knowledge from different mythologies or by using mystical artifacts, although the existence of sorcerers is a secret to the public.

While Sorcerers align themselves with different beliefs, Espers are aligned with scientific institutions. This leads to a power struggle between the magic and science factions for control of the world.

    Hello!

A Certain Magical Index is a series of light novels written by Kazuma Kamachi and published by Dengeki Bunko which began in 2004.

Touma Kamijou is an ordinary high-school student living in Academy City, a state-of-the-art city dedicated to the scientific study of humans with Psychic Powers. Every single student is given an "Esper Rank" to indicate their power and Touma is the lowest of the low: a Level 0 with no psychic talent whatsoever. The only thing he has going for him is his right hand: the Imagine Breaker, which has the ability to dispel any and all supernatural phenomena but also negates his own luck.

  3. [A Certain Magical Index] Vector Manipulation: The Brilliance of The Accelerator's Powers@ahmadmanga2068d

Accelerator is the strongest Esper in Academy City. While he's far from being the strongest character in "To Aru/A Certain" franchise, he's still ranked #1 Level 5, (which is the current strongest level which only 7 Espers have reached.) He's also the only Esper that could reach Level 6 in theory, and his presence plays a major role in the development of the setting.

The "Accelerator" is actually the name of his ability but everyone referred to him as such for a long time that he forgot his original name.

    draulxbu4aeo_na.jpg

Accelerator's ability is one of the most over-powered and unique abilites in the existence: Vector Manipluation! He has the power to control any vector that comes in contact with him. That's the only thing he can do, but it also means he can do anything.

A Vector is any quantity that has both Magnitude and Direction.

As long as something has a Magnitude and a Direction, Accelerator can manipulate it: Not only can direct it anywhere he pleases, he can also change its size/power in any way he pleases. Since everything in the physical world has a vector quantity in it, Accelerator can manipluate almost anything as long as it touches him.

So, he can relflect atttacks or redirect them. He can return projectiles stronger to the opponent! He can create plasma in air! He can (and does) reverse the blood flow of his victims. He can even manipulate sound and light waves because they contain vectors too.

Accelerators powers can also work subconsiusly and even in his sleep. By default, there's a barrier around him that reflects any attack!

    tumblr_pjnogp343r1xlcdfoo1_1280.png

    Limitations and Weakness

Despite being able to manipulate all vectors, there are limits to what he can do. First, he has to calculate all the vectors mathmatics in his head, in real time! That means if there are too many vectors for him to calculate he won't be able to do that, but his brain is so overpowered too! Accelerator never reached this limit until the time he got shot and got brain injury that made him rely on a computer.

What makes Accelerator so powerful isn't that his powers are limitless, it's that the limits are so high for him that they don't matter. After his brain injury, he can now only use his powers for less than hour a day, and even when he use them, he lost half of his calculating ability. The super-computer assisting his brain can't calculate half as fast as his brain used to calculate before the injury. (Let that sink in your head.) That's the limit the author put for him, otherwise he's basically invincible!

One of the downsides of Accelerator powers is that he has to allow unharmful things like sound and air to bypass his barrier. It's stated that his white hair resulted from subcounciously reflecting the sun's UV rays. This also means that Accelerator can't be affected by new substances even if they're positive for him unless he reprogrammed his barrier to let them pass.

Another weakness for him is that he can only manipulate vectors! Despite seeming invincible, Accelerator's powers are still only capable of doing that one thing. If he was hit with an attack that has a vector element, his power can do nothing against it.

For example, let's say some Magician directly attacks Accelerator internals, that will instantly kill him.

    indexii24_13.jpg

Of course, there's also the brain injury!

Early in the series, Accelerator got shot while he couldn't activate his powers. His brain injured so hard that he couldn't speak anymore without a computer assisting his brain. The device's battery can only less than an hour in super-power mode. This limitation results in a highly tactical situations where Accelerator needs to fight without his powers, reserving battery before fighting stronger foes.

Accelerator's final weakness is his body. He's so used to his power that once he's stripped out of them, he becomes weaker than a normal human. He gets better later in the story because he learned to not rely on his powers and that's why he got fire-arms training.

    What do you think?

  4. [A Certain Magical Index IF] My Experience Watching a Let's Play in Full Japanese for the First Time@ahmadmanga2084d

So, I was looking for info about Imaginary Fest, the game adaption of A Certain Magical Index Light Novel/Anime for Smartphones. I heard about it for a while before but I didn't look it up, it's a Gacha game, how good it could be anyway?

Then I stumbled upon this video: Accelerator Meeting Saten in IF! (Random Translations) Not only the scene has the original voice actors in it, the scene is top quality and offers new insight on the characters involved. True, it's a filler/non-canon, but it's the type I seek of non-canon content! Any character from Index's main story meeting with Saten is a big thing for me, even if it's not canon. (As long as they stay in-character.)

    2_5_rpg_if_720p.mp4_000211033.jpg

Imaginary Fest is only in Japanese and a VPN is needed to play it outside Japan. I knew my mobile wouldn't be able to run it anyway, and I could emulate it on PC but I doubt it would work on my emulator. (It seems to need steep system requirements.)

Then, I had this interesting idea: Find a Let's Play for the game!

Searching for the game in English didn't provide me with any Streamer/LPer for the game, so I searched for Japanese Let's Plays on YouTube: The name of the series "とある魔術の禁書目録" + The name of the game "幻想収束" (It reads Imaginary Fest even though the Kanji says something else) + "実況" which is the Japanese equivalent of Let's Play.

2_rpg_if_720p.mp4_001838033.jpg TST's first set of Gacha characters...Notice the Queen's popularity?

I only found one Let's Player of the game who played the game for months and keeps updating it until now. The Stationary Turtle is a small Japanese YouTuber, whose channel only appeared to me because my search was very specific. His stuff is only in Japanese and my understanding of the language is... modest at best. Watching it was a challenge.

It's funny how human mind works...

I could understand maybe %5 of what the LPer is saying, but I could understand %60 of the game's gameplay and story. It's not a bad percentage! Mostly because I both understand how Gacha games work, and read the original material and know more than a few scenes by heart by now.

    2_rpg_if_720p.mp4_000805033.jpg Imagine Breaker will work in 3, 2, 1 and... !!

It's not like I'm watching with Zero Japanese knowledge. On one hand, I can barely translate basic sentences and I know less than 150 Kanji. On the other, I can read all Kana characters and I know many random words.

I watched +3000 episodes of anime so I'm already familiar with the language. I'm not sure about what the words really mean, I don't know how most of them are written, but I can form a vague idea on what's being said when I hear something in Japanese. Especially when it's about a story with hundreds of English loan words like A Certain Magical Index!

    1_rpg_if_720p.mp4_000474700.jpg Something about a break-point, whatever~ I do appreciate tutorial Komoe-sensei~

I watched up to the third episode, and I learned more than a few new words from the experience. I re-applied many things I learned through the last 7 years, (I didn't learn Japanese in any formal way, just some trivia over the months.)

You can imagine how happy I was, every time I assume the meaning of something and it turns out right. To memorize the character names in Kanji. (Currently, only Kamijou Touma but I really wana memorize Misaka's name!)

Imaginary Fest is something I want to play myself, not because it's good, but because I need more #Index/#Railgun in my life!

Finally, The Stationary Turtle repeats many phrases, like every minute! I had to look them up to learn them and now I can proudly say I'll never need to look up 中々 and 難しい again! Probably... I think?

This was my experience with watching a Let's Play in Japanese for more than 2 hours with more focus than I usually watch things. I learned so much and I believe I'll be able to speak Japanese if I continued to learn this way reguraly for a year~

As for the game itself, I'll probably write about it in the future, so stay tuned!

    What are your thoughts...?

Have to mention that the game is called Index IF, and it features many 'what if?' scenarios! Brilliant!!

  5. Index and Railgun Difference of Style & Why Novel Readers Love Both@ahmadmanga2135d

So I've been watching A Certain Scientific Railgun T every week now. This left me in #Raildex mania mood. So after writing about the series and watch order I decided to write about the different themes each series take on.

There's a reason anime-only fans prefer the story of (the spin-off) Railgun over (the main story) Index. Some even pretend that the world is only compromised of the side shown in Railgun. (I disagree because the deeper you're in Railgun story, the more Index story events effect the world around Misaka Mikoto.) The animation and pacing is way better in Railgun anime than the anime of Index despite being made by the same studio that adapted Index Light Novel.

Part of that is because Railgun is adapted from a Manga that uses it's visuals to present a perfect mix of comedy and action, instead of a Light Novel that deals more with the psychological aspect of the characters, an aspect that's hard to present in an animated format.

The main factor that differentiates the two shows is the narrative style and the theme of each one of them!

    KamijouVsMisaka.jpg

    Index Themes

The main story, A Certain Magical Index novels have the conflict between the Magic and Science sides as the main theme. That's only generally speaking however, as every volume is built on its own theme and provides its own conflict. The author notes of some volumes explicitly mention the theme of that volume. (For example the theme of Vol.2 is "Bad Ending" and Vol.7 a "Magic Book.")

The arcs of this story are short (as only the biggest arcs span more than one volume.) The styles of the arcs vary heavily from each other. Some arcs are adventurous, some deal heavily with mental issues and others are comedic. There are even arcs that are bloody and disturbing.

In a way (and I'm paraphrasing this guy here,) every volume in the novel is "its own movie" that ties together with the other "movies" to paint the world's bigger picture.

The casts of the arcs are always different. The main protagonist (Kamijou Touma) is the focus on the most of them as he gets in trouble and saves people lives quite often. But he's not the only protagonist of the series, and there are even arcs where's he's not present at all.

Putting that in mind, Index story is all over the place! You can love few arcs while hating others. You can love a character while hating an arc that focuses mainly on them, or feel the exact opposite! You can't know what to expect when you start reading a new Index volume. (Unless Accelerator is on the cover, then you can bet it'll be an awesome volume!)

wp6180392.jpg Accelerator, the king of Anti-heroes!

So when a story like that gets adapted into an anime comes a problem! Index story arcs are very different and short that it's hard to make a good seasonal anime! The arcs that focus on a character's inner conflict without too much action are especially bad when animated. You can only show so much before the anime feel slow and motionless.

Novel Touma is an amazing character, Anime Touma is a bland character. What differentiates Kamijou Touma than other shonen heroes is the inner conflict he has when he fights strong opponents who usually have good reasons for what they're doing. He always manages to prove them wrong in the end, but the anime skips on some of the process to get there. Well, Several anime based on light novels suffer from this problem.

The anime adaption of Index tries to cram as many arcs as they can per season, and they faced a mixed results on how successful each arc was presented. Index III was especially bad as they tried to cram each volume into 3 episodes, removing anything unnecessary to the plot including the only (supposed) appearance of a fan favorite character.

So, for those who only watch the anime. Without the context of the novels, Index anime seems too ambitious and tries to start/end arcs too fast, both the pacing and the animation suffer for it, and when you have Railgun's style to compare to, you're justified to feel disappointed.

    Railgun Themes

Railgun's manga on the other hand follows the adventures of only one character (Misaka Mikoto) and her closest friends. The main cast rarely changes, and the dynamic between them progresses in every arc. Focusing on a small group of characters helps to show many sides of each girl's personality.

To.Aru.Kagaku.no.Railgun.full.101875.jpg The main four girls in Railgun's story.

Railgun's arcs are smaller in scope while rich on details. Most importantly however, is that every arc of Railgun (at least the Manga) is based on one theme and its evolution. Almost all the arcs focus on Mikoto's struggles with Academy City's Dark Side and her attempts to live a normal life with her friends away from it.

By the time of this writing, Mikoto has no knowledge of the Magic Side's existence in Railgun, and only became aware of it later in the Index Novels yet to be adapted into an anime.

The first three arcs of the manga (Level Upper, Sisters, Daihasei,) each feature one basic theme and they're all related. All arcs are connected by one scientist. (Unsurprisingly, a Kihara.) The last arc of the trilogy references the previous two arcs heavily. The current arc of Railgun T (Dream Ranker) features many parallels to the Level Upper arc while being the logical follow-up to Daihasei arc and picks-up beautifully from there.

Since Railgun's is a monthly manga and the anime catches up with the story relatively fast, the anime fleshes out some of the characters by adding slice-of-life elements between action. The first and second seasons add original filler arcs, that ties up some of the loose-ends each manga arc before them left unsolved. While these filler arcs are not Canon to the manga, some of the events in them are implied to have happened Off-screen.

This all adds to the coherence of Railgun story. Unlike Index story switches its narrative style every arc. (Sometimes several times in an arc.) Railgun always feels the same: If you liked the first few episodes/chapters, you'll most likely like the whole series.

    Novel Readers

If you asked a Raildex fan if they prefer Index or Railgun, if that fan consumes every content for the franchise (that they could get access to,) you'll most likely get: " The Light Novel is better!"

KamijouBreakingIllussions.png Kamijou breaks some illusions (NT Vol.4)

You see, those who read the Light Novel and are dedicated enough to read all the way through New Testament, are the people who're quite used to the quirks of the franchise. Index vs Railgun debate doesn't matter to them as much because every episode/chapter/volume only adds more to the lore. If you're a person who cares about the lore that much, settling for one side of the world won't cut it.

Of course, even Light Novel readers will agree that Railgun is better as anime. The question is whether they are think the Novels with their unique style or Railgun's manga with its consistency is better overall. You'll get different opinions depending on who you ask.

As for me, I only consider each series a part of a whole and while I prefer Railgun arcs over most of the Old and New Testament of Index Novels. Some arcs from Index are just so good that Railgun arcs might never get the top spot. (Also, Railgun as of yet doesn't have Accelerator as a main character, does it?)

    So, what do you think?

I only talked about Index Novels up to New Testament and Railgun series in this article. I omitted other franchises in the Raildex universe, (like Accelerator and Genesis Testament,) for simplicity.

  6. [A Certain Magical Index] An Intro to Raildex Universe@ahmadmanga2145d

One of the franchises I follow (and probably my favorite Light Novel of all time) is A Certain Magical Index series. (Japanese: Toaru Majutsu no Kinsho Mokuroku.) The Light Novel spawned many spin-offs that share the same setting and timeline. Usually referred to by fans as the "To Aru" or "Raildex" universe.

    toarumajutsunoindex1Small.jpg

The settings of the series is a world similar to our own except that there are two sides of super powers in conflict with each other. The Magic sides has super powers based on mythology and religion, while the Science side led by Academy City. A city that's technologically advanced 30-years ahead of the rest of the world. %80 of its 2.3 Million residents are students who gained superpowers through science and experimentation. Those children are called Espers.

The story of the original novel follows Kamijou Touma whose right hand has the power to cancel anything supernatural. He meets Index a young nun who is being pursued by magicians to acquire the 103,000 Grimoires (cursed magical books) she has in her head. He tries to save her only to get involved with the magic side of the world.

Kamijou Touma who always finds himself at the center of the conflict between the Magic and Science sides, spends all his time trying to protect the peace to his life and those around him. Saving the world multiple times in the process and getting the affection of every girl he meets. Kamijou also inspires others to become heroes throughout the story.

The series follows many factions of each side, and the antagonists of one arc could be the main protagonists of another. A Certain Magical Index doesn't always follow Kamijou but Academy City is always involved in some way even in the many arcs that doesn't happen at that location.

    toarumajutsunoindex7small.jpg

A manga spin-off called A Certain Scientific Railgun follows Misaka Mikoto, the third strongest Esper and the main heroine of the science side of Index novels. Mikoto is the strongest electricity-user in the city and she's very creative in using her ability. Being able to hack into computer network using electricity, and adept at controlling her own electromagnetic field. SHe also managed to create her own version of the Railgun which became her title and the name of her series.

This spin-off follows her own adventures against the dark side of Academy City. Railgun is overall more light-hearted and down-to-earth than Index, but it can get dark and bloody when the dark side is involved.

Both Index and Railgun stories are canon to each other. (At least in their original Novel/Manga forms as the anime has a different timeline.) Story arcs of both series may happen at the same time, some events is either series have an unexplained effect on the other that you'll only notice after watching both. At one point Railgun and Index converge at one arc where the events are shown from each series' protagonist's perspective.

The third season of Raligun is currently airing in Japan. It has adapts two of the best arcs of the manga and the art/animation quality is amazing. A Certain Scientific Railgun T is one of the reasons I wrote this article.

    How to Start Raildex Universe?

With Index and Railgun as the main series and main spin-off, the series has other spin-offs focusing on different characters. There's Accelerator manga/anime (which follows the strongest Esper after the events of the 5th arc/volume of Index novels.) Astral Buddy manga, (which features one of the side characters of Railgun as the main character.) The most recent spin-off is Dark Matter, (which gives a backstory for the second strongest Esper in Academy City.) Since the novels are still on-going and popular, more spin-offs are expected in the future.

So, if you think this series might be for you, I advice you to watch The Fascinating World of Index/Railgun and Why You Should Watch It and if you enjoyed it, here's a video about watch order, because it's confusing to the newcomers! Both videos touch on the appeal of the series better than I could by writing here~

I'll probably write more about this series, but for now I hope you leave your thoughts as a comment on this article.

    What do you think?

Third season of Toaru Majutsu no Index.

Academy City, Japan, is at the forefront of science. Besides being 30 years ahead of the world technologically, more than three-fourths of this peculiar city's population consists of students developing their psychic abilities as espers in various institutions. Among these students is Touma Kamijou, a high school boy with the lowest psychic rank of zero, but with a mysterious power no scientist can understand: "Imagine Breaker," which allows him to negate other supernatural abilities.

This, however, doesn't affect Kamijou's life in the least as he plays his role as a regular teenager; that is, until he meets the strange Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a young girl who has memorized the entire forbidden grimoires, and now a dangerous organization is hunting Index down. With several magicians looking to harm the girl, Kamijou will defend his new companion at all costs as he discovers a strange new realm of the supernatural.

  36. Anime Review: A Certain Magical Index@thatanimesnob2952d

    SCRIPT

The Toaru franchise is a typical shonen adventure with a nice premise. This is why most people like the show by the way, because the premise sounds nice. Magic and science are at war so let’s spend most of the series in a city where most people are teenagers with superpowers. The story feels great on paper because the author put a lot of work in order to explain the various magical and scientific powers that many characters possess. There is a lot of techno-babbling trying to explain magic, and at the end of the day it’s all bullshit because it’s magic. The protagonist is a normal teenager who is evaluated as level zero, yet with his power he can defeat everybody with a punch. Level zero indeed; so much for all the amazing techno-babbling that makes sense. It’s all improbable physics canceled with a broken power.

So down to it, it plays out like a typical light novel adaptation about teenagers fighting with superpowers. Despite the variety in themes and special abilities, the scriptwriter hardly tried to offer anything more than the basic fighting shonen formula. They are talking a lot during battles and whatever they say is not deep philosophy or the fringe science of superpowers. It is just typical speeches around superficial morality, friendship, and macho one-liners. And because this is a light novel, we of course need to have fan service and harem, just because.

    CAST

In a similar fashion, the characters are a colorful bunch of stereotypes that take their sweet time to develop and even then it is not done in any significant way. Most are in fact only given some attention when they are introduced before being thrown in the background.

    • The most prominent example of this is the lead girl Index, whose name is even in the title of the anime. Although she is supposed to be the key character in the war because of her hidden knowledge, she is offered some immersion and drama before she becomes nothing but a platonic lover to the lead character. Not only that, but as the girls who like the lead male keep increasing, her role becomes even less and less important to the show in general. Some say this is good because she is very annoying and the less air-time she gets, the better the show is. If that is the case, she was a very bad choice for a lead character to begin with.
    • The lead male, Touma, is the stereotypical shonen protagonist, predictably owning a broken power nobody else possesses, nobody can block or defeat, it is never explained why he possesses it, and he uses it to shout juvenile morality speeches, protect his loved ones and save chicks by punching them in the face. Hooray for techno-babbling that makes sense. He then he goes to heal in a hospital before everything repeats in the exact same way in the next arc. Hooray for creativity.
    • The support characters have even less importance to the plot. Each arc usually ends with Touma saving one girl and adding it to his personal harem, which of course increases in nudity as the episodes go on, because the scriptwriter had no idea of what to do with them once their introduction arc was over. The girls are objectified and treated as fapping material, doing nothing but coking or being naked. A result of the scriptwriter, wasting all his time on writing techno-babbling bullshit, instead of character development.
    • The only villain most of the fans care about is this psychotic guy named Accelerator, and even he is just a crazy strong guy who wants to level up by killing lots of people. So much depth.
    • Mikasa is the favorite girl for most fans, to the point she got her own side story. She is otherwise an average tsundere with superpowers, mass cloned so everybody can have his own personal waifu.

    PRODUCTION VALUES

The animation is rather fluent, there is a nice color palette, and a catchy BMG. All that still can’t change the feeling of watching completely generic looking characters and eventually forgettable songs.

Action scenes are very good if all you want is fancy lights and big explosions but they are otherwise following a very standard and repetitive formula that makes them uninteresting in the long run. You know the drill, they macho talk, the lead gets trashed, they macho talk, the lead gets up full of resolve to protect his friends, they macho talk, the lead wins. Thank you very much; I am watching this since Hokuto no Ken came out.

    LEGACY

There are definitely far better shonen than this one, with far better handling of their stories and characters. It’s a good time waster if you are still a newbie and a shonen fan but nothing great in the longrun. Generic characters doing generic things with poor reasoning and cheap plot twists with lots of pointless techno-babbling is all you will get. If you expect a lemon twist to your average soda, Toaru is just tab water in a fancy glass.

    Minor details about the seasons.

    • Toaru 1 had little to no overall plot amongst its story arcs. Some excuse it as the introduction to the setting and the cast but story-wise it is still pretty much a disjoined series of almost stand-alone missions.
    • Railgun 1 was just a storyless spin-off just for kicks, done to please the Misaka fans / Index haters. It is considered far more enjoyable that Toaru 1 but still has zero story to tell.
    • Toaru 2 does a much better job at having a better overall plot but then again the transition from one segment to another happens in a rushed and poor way that confuses anyone not aware of the novels. Plus, it leaves most of the older characters as background decoration and ends openly at a point that is almost a major cliffhanger. There is a lot more to show in a, supposed, upcoming Toaru 3 series.
    • Railgun 2 is too improving in terms of plot and characterization and it’s currently considered to be the best season yet. It still spends a lot of time in cute girls doing cute things though.

One of the biggest hooks ends up being the fan service. It was low-toned on Toaru 1 but gets rather overboard on Toaru 2. The Railgun seasons opt for more moe appeal but they follow the same principle of degrading the females into mostly eye candy than respectful characters. That is plain distasteful; but then again it is the only way to maintain the interest of the audience around people the author doesn’t plan to develop.

  38. Ollerus and Sogiita Gunha from A Certain Magical Index | Speed Drawing | Time Lapse | Art by Clark@artbyclark3041d

Hi everyone! I hope all is well and your day has been good. I know it's been a few days and today I'm uploading a larger piece than usual. I've been working on it for a few days now and have been trying to finish it up. Well, I did yesterday and so today I can show you all what that it. I drew a picture of Ollerus Vs Sogiita Gunha from A Certain Magical Index. I've never seen this anime before and I didn't know who these characters were until a couple of days ago. All I know is that I was searching up pictures to draw, like I normally do and I came across this one. I've been wanting to draw it for some time now but haven't gotten around to it because I was busy drawing other stuff. I'm happy with the results and I can't wait until I get a 16x20in frame to hang it up on my wall. Let me know what you think about the artwork.

Here's a video of the full process if you'd like to watch.

Here's a picture of the final product. IMG_2585.JPG

Set in a city of scientifically advanced superhuman students, but in a world where magic is also real. Touma Kamijou’s right hand, the Imagine Breaker, will negate all magic, psychic, or divine powers, but not his own bad luck. One day he finds a young girl hanging on his balcony railing. She turns out to be a nun from the Church of England, and her mind has been implanted with the Index-Librorum-Prohibitorum – all the magical texts the Church has removed from circulation. less image Category: Dubbed Anime Status: Completed Released: 2008 Rating: 9.56 (25 Votes) Rate it!
