Schmidt worked at an insurance company with fair success, but he is getting old and has now turned 66 years old, which is considered a good retirement age. His retirement dinner was very fancy and all of that but he soon finds himself feeling empty, bored, irrelevant, and with nothing to do with his time. He lives with his wife, and they have an only child living, a woman who is living in a different city and is about to get married.

The guy is simply out of touch most of the time, and I am not talking about the actor but about the character. The actor portrays this awkward character perfectly. This makes itself very clear when, in a very clumsy way, he offers Warren an investment opportunity that not only sounds awful and probably like scam, but it was also very inappropriate given the context of that conversation. This character and the subtle disappointing reactions from Warren are good comedy.

Once he arrives, he will finally meet the family of his soon-to-be son-in-law, and well, let's just say he finds no reason to change his opinion about the man. There will also be a few funny scenes from this point on. The movie was okish. It certainly had drama and some funny moments too. Nicholson's performance was good even though the personality of this character was very reserved. He still managed to express his disappointment in a very subtle but also funny way. If you are a fan of this actor or are in the mood for a good drama-comedy about an old man, this film would be a good choice.
