  1. Film Review: After the Storm (2001)@drax1117d

Hard economic times often forced people to take jobs that are humiliating, dangerous of or on the edge of law. One of them is protagonist of After the Storm, 2001 adventure film directed by Guy Ferland. The plot, based on the eponymous short story by Ernest Hemingway, is set in 1933 Bahamas. The protagonist is Arno (played by Benjamin Bratt), WW1 veteran who, thanks to Wall Street Crash of 1929, lost father and family fortune and now has to make ends meet as beachcomber, while occasionally making deliveries of heroin to the yacht owned by rich US bootlegger. When the yacht sinks during the storm, Arno is the only person that knows location of the wreck and intends to use opportunity to take valuables from yacht’s safe. The problem is that Arno lacks diving equipment for the operation, so he is forced to partner with French marine salvage specialist Jean-Pierre (played by Armand Assante). Two men distrust each other which is further complicated with two women – Arno’s girlfriend Conquina (played by Mili Avital) and Jean-Pierre’s wife Janine (played by Simone-Elise Girard) – each having their own agendas and encouraging Arno and Jean-Pierre to cheat each other.

After the Storm was one of the last and among the more ambitious projects of Trimark Pictures, studio specialised for television and direct-to-video films. Script was written by A. E. Hotchner, renowned playwright who had been Hemingway’s friend in his early days and had adapted some of his works for television. In this case, he expanded rather short story into feature length film, which wasn’t the most fortunate decision, because many of added characters and situations looked cliched. On the other hand, director Guy Ferland was more successful in creating laid back atmosphere and putting attractive Belize locations to good use. Cast seems relaxed, especially Benjamin Bratt and veteran Armand Assante as his partner and rival. Mili Avital, on the other hand, serves mostly as an eye candy and same can be said of Canadian actress Simone-Elise Girard. Although underwater scenes look rather unimpressive and although it looks rather poor compared with The Deep, action adventure classic which had the same plot, After the Storm represent solid piece of entertainment.
