Last week I finished an anime that I honestly didn't have much faith in. I ended up giving up because of the animation, but around the halfway point, the plot became much more interesting and it really captivated many people, which was unlikely since it's a fairly traditional art form in Japan and might not seem appealing to everyone. But believe me, it's worth it. That's why this is my recommendation of the week.
Akane-banashi (あかね噺)…
Premiered in early April, director Ayumu Watanabe and animation studio Zexcs bring us a slice-of-life comedy-drama in a 12-episode format, and I believe they've already confirmed a second season.

This fact further motivated her to delve into something that had already attracted and inspired her admiration. Akane becomes the secret apprentice of a renowned master, the same one who taught her father, in order to climb the strict hierarchy of this world. Throughout her journey, the young woman must perfect her technique, master her voice and body language, and face formidable rivals and implacable judges. She experiences certain ups and downs, but in the end, her growth and, above all, her dedication to not being driven by revenge, but by passion and demonstrating the artistic quality of her father, will surprise us. Will she be prepared to face the one who destroyed her father's dreams?
Personal opinion
As I said at the beginning, I didn't have much faith in this anime. Hmm, it delves into something I didn't fully understand. Rakugo seems like a monologue, but at the same time, it's an interpretation of several characters in a single person, but with distinctly Japanese stories. Perhaps that's what kept me hooked, until, as you progressed, each story captivated you, like the one in episode 10, which our protagonist performed. For me, it was the best. So much so, that I was doing something else while watching and I stopped what I was doing to focus on that tongue-twister of a story being performed. Another thing that caught my attention is the protagonist's motivation, and beyond revenge, which is highlighted at the beginning and continues to be the focus, I feel that the story focuses on how much a daughter's love for her father goes to and how she wants to demonstrate everything he conveyed to her through his art.
Her characters don't feel one-dimensional; they have dynamism. Akane, for example, isn't the typical shy girl who discovers a talent, nor is she an insufferable arrogant girl; she's passionate, assertive, a little rough around the edges, but with enormous respect for what she does. The rivals and teachers aren't evil for no reason. Each has their own philosophy of what Rakugo should be (some prefer to maintain strict tradition, others seek to innovate so that young people don't get bored). This clash of ideologies makes you empathize even with the antagonists.
The animation is beautiful, but I feel the voice actors did an excellent job. More than a story that needs great visual effects, it needs people who nail the intonations and maintain a dynamic pace so the 5-minute monologues don't feel tedious. They also masterfully capture the changes in facial expressions, gazes, and body language, making each scene reflect the shifts in what they want to convey through rakugo. And finally, I feel they do a great job of addressing something uniquely Japanese that other cultures can appreciate and understand: through their protagonist, who has to deeply understand human weaknesses—selfishness, laziness, love, and mischief. Our girl learns that to improve her art, she first has to mature as a person and understand others. It's also a subtle critique of how old, rigid institutions sometimes stifle young talent out of fear of change.
Positive points…
- A refreshing protagonist: She's self-assured, competitive, and proactive, but not perfect. She knows how to admit her mistakes, learns from others, and her motivation (love and respect for her father) makes her incredibly endearing.
- Stunning graphic expressiveness: The artwork is spectacular. The author manages to convey the characters' tone of voice, rhythm, and charisma through their faces and body language. It's such a visual narrative that you can almost "hear" the story they're telling.
- Genuine cultural appreciation: It's not a boring history lesson. It teaches you how traditional Japanese art works (the behind-the-scenes aspects, hierarchies, different styles) in an organic, entertaining, and very easy-to-digest way.
- The voice actors do a splendid job with their expressive voice work.
Negative points…
- Initial cultural barrier (The "niche effect"): Rakugo is a hyper-Japanese art form, based on Edo-era wordplay and traditional humor. For audiences from other cultures, this can be a significant barrier to entry. If you can't connect with the concept of "a guy telling old jokes while sitting on a cushion," the series won't grab you.
- Long-term repetitive formula: At the end of the day, the conflict is always resolved on stage.
- The danger of long "monologues": In manga, it works because you control the reading pace, but on screen, it can be risky; even so, I feel they did a great job capturing the right rhythm.

La semana pasada termino un anime que, de verdad no le tenía como mucha fe, por la animación me termine quedando, pero, ya como a la mitad de la trama, se puso mucho más interesante y realmente termino cautivando a muchos, y que era algo poco probable, porque se trata de un arte bastante tradicional en japón y pueden que no resulte atractivo, pero créanme que vale la pena, por ello, esta es la recomendación de la semana.

Opinión personal
Como dije en un inicio, no le tenia mucha fe a este anime, mmm, es que se adentra a algo que no entendí del todo que se trataba, el rakugo pareciera como un monologo, pero a la vez, es una interpretación varios personajes en una sola persona pero con historia netamente japonesas, y quizás eso no me mantenía enganchada, hasta que, a medida que a avanzabas cada historia te dejaba enganchado, como la del capitulo 10, que nuestra protagonista hizo, para mi fue la mejor, tanto así, que estaba haciendo algo mientras veía y deje eso para enfocarme en esa historia de trabalenguas que se estaba interpretando. Otra de las cosas que me llamó la atención es el motivo de la protagonista, y más allá de venganza, que al principio resaltan y siguen enfocando, siento que la historia nos enfoca al cuanto llega hacer el amor de una hija por su padre y quiere demostrar todo lo que él le transmitía a través de su arte.
Sus personajes no se sienten cuadrados, hay dinamismo en los mismos, Akane por ejemplo, no es la típica chica tímida que descubre un talento, ni tampoco una arrogante insufrible; es apasionada, asertiva, un poco tosca, pero con un respeto enorme por lo que hace. Los rivales y maestros no son malos porque sí. Cada uno tiene su propia filosofía de lo que debe ser el Rakugo (unos prefieren mantener la tradición estricta, otros buscan innovar para que los jóvenes no se aburran). Ese choque de ideologías hace que empatices incluso con los antagonistas.
La animación es hermosa, pero siento que los seiyus hicieron un excelente trabajo, ya que más una historia que necesita de grandes efectos visuales, necesita de personas que acierten en las entonaciones y de mantener un ritmo dinámico para que los monólogos de 5 minutos no se sientan pesados; agregando que también se logra los cambios de expresión facial, las miradas y el lenguaje corporal, que cada escena se note los cambios en lo que quieren transmitir con el rakugo. Y, para terminar, siento que hacen muy bien en abordar algo netamente que se deja en japón y que demás culturas aprecien y entiendan y es a través de su protagonista, la cual tiene que entender a fondo las debilidades humanas: el egoísmo, la flojera, el amor, la picardía; nuestra chica aprende que, para mejorar su arte, primero tiene que madurar como persona y entender a los demás. También es una crítica sutil a cómo las instituciones viejas y rígidas a veces aplastan el talento joven por miedo al cambio.
Puntos positivos…
- Una protagonista refrescante: Es segura de sí misma, competitiva y proactiva, pero no es perfecta. Sabe admitir sus errores, aprende de los demás y su motivación (el amor y respeto por su padre) la vuelve increíblemente entrañable.
- Expresividad gráfica brutal: El dibujo es un espectáculo. El autor logra transmitir el tono de voz, el ritmo y el carisma de los personajes a través de sus rostros y lenguaje corporal. Es una narrativa tan visual que casi puedes "escuchar" la historia que están contando.
- Apreciación cultural real: No es un folleto aburrido de historia. Te enseña cómo funciona un arte tradicional japonés (el backstage, las jerarquías, los diferentes estilos) de una manera orgánica, entretenida y muy fácil de digerir.
