Film Review: Annapolis (2006)@drax694d
The ever-risky business of filmmaking continues to present promising premises that falter upon release due to shifting public sentiments. One such example is the 2006 military drama Annapolis, directed by Justin Lin and produced by Disney. The film was initially intended to capitalise on the wave of patriotism following the September 11 attacks and the reverence for the US military. Unfortunately, it arrived at a time when public opinion had become increasingly divided and disillusioned with the escalating Iraq War.
The protagonist, Jake Huard (played by James Franco), is a young man from a family of naval shipbuilders who has always dreamed of attending the prestigious United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. Upon achieving this long-held ambition, it becomes clear that Jake is ill-prepared for the rigours of his new life. Struggling academically and embroiled in a contentious relationship with Cole (played by Tyrese Gibson), his senior midshipman and company commander, Jake finds solace in his budding romance with Alison "Ali" Haloway (played by Jordana Brewster), a high-ranking female midshipman. His boxing talent would allow him opportunity to enter Brigades, boxing tournament open to midshipmen regardless of rank, where he would have Cole as his main opponent.
The script, penned by Dave Collard, is unfortunately formulaic and lacking in originality. The plot combines elements from the classic films An Officer and a Gentleman and Rocky, but these two influences do not mix well. Consequently, inevitable comparisons to those classics make Annapolis appear even more lacklustre than it truly is. The script is saturated with clichés and predictabilities, making it easy for even the least experienced viewers to guess how the plot will unfold.
James Franco, who was one of Hollywood's rising stars in the early 21st century, delivers a passable but uninspiring performance. The same can be said for Tyrese Gibson, who was miscast in the film and reportedly had a strained relationship with Franco on set. Justin Lin, who would later become a successful director thanks to his work on the Fast and Furious franchise, disappoints alongside the rest of the cast and crew.
At the end of the day, unless one has not seen any Hollywood films prior to 2006, it is likely that Annapolis will be considered a complete waste of time. The film's combination of clichéd dialogue, formulaic plot, and underwhelming performances make it utterly forgettable.

There is nothing like being bored or going through a moment, to watch a good movie, that its story attracts you and makes you forget everything you are going through. This is the case of the film I am going to tell you about today. Annapolis, which is also known as The Challenge, is a 2006 production, which although it is not one of the current works, but when I saw that it was available it caught my attention, so I decided to see it and the truth is that I liked it. If you have read some of my previous reviews, you will know that I like movies with war stories, army, and that always have a touch of drama and The Challenge is no exception. Always before watching a movie I like to read some reviews, to see what I can expect from its plot which is where I mostly concentrate. All aspects are important, but I think that with a good story, other details can go unnoticed.
The reviews of this movie have not been so good, but in this publication I am going to tell you what I thought about it, according to my personal experience. What is the movie Annapolis about? This is a film that tells the story of a boy whose dream is to join the U.S. Navy, at the Navy base that bears the same name of the movie. The young Jake Huard, who is played by James Franco, achieves his goal of entering the naval academy, but when he sees how complicated it can be there, all the tests and demands that have doubt whether or not to continue. We know how demanding army training can be, especially in the U.S. Army, which is considered one of the toughest in the world. All this can be seen in the film and it is one of the things I liked most about the plot, to really see how hard it can be for these guys to fulfill their dreams of wearing the uniform with great honor.
But not always things are done to fulfill a dream, but by family pressure or the locality where young people live, this was what we saw at least Annapolis. This plot can lead us to see the friendship and companionship, but also the enmity between young people for wanting to excel. Huard is a boy who has the ability to practice boxing, perhaps to get rid of all the anger he carries inside, after wanting things to go well, because even he lacks the support of his father, a character who does not believe that he can achieve his goal of passing the naval test for the hard process that is passed there. Cole is another of our main characters (lieutenant marine guard first class) who is played by Tyrese Gibson, who thinks that Jake Huard is not made for the navy and that is where a rivalry between them begins. How does the enmity between these two end? I invite you to watch the movie.

In the movies can not miss the touch of romance, that's where Ali is on the scene, who is also an officer who is in charge of training the aspirants, but little by little is having love feelings with our protagonist. Who gives life to Ali is Jordana Brewster. The plot of the film may be basic or similar to many we have seen before, but the truth is that the most important thing is the message it can leave us. The challenge teaches us that we should never give up, regardless of the opinion of others, we always have to trust in our abilities and strengthen those aspects in which we are not as good as expected.
The naval training is really hard, you can even see in the film how the trainees are mistreated. It is well known that this usually happens in real life, however, I don't know how faithful is what they show us compared to what really happens. Even so, I think that this production gave me a good understanding of what they wanted to transmit. Maybe for many it lacked action, like seeing the rookies go on a naval cruiser, an aircraft carrier, a destroyer or any other means that the navy has for defense. But in reality the movie wanted to show us how hard the training is and the self-improvement that we all have to have with our dreams, not only related to the military, but in any area of our lives. This is what I got from the plot of the movie Annapolis, overall I liked it, maybe it's not perfect, but it's the kind of movie I love to watch, so this obviously interferes with my opinion about the movie.
As for other aspects, I can touch on the work of the cast. As I always mentioned I am not much of a critic of the actors in a movie, but what is true is that in many things we can give our opinion according to what the character transmitted to us in the movie. The performances of James Franco and Tyrese Gibson, are what I can highlight the most of the film. Franco really shows us the tenacity of our character, but also gives us to see the other side of the character in the moments when things do not go as well as he expects. Cole is a character with quite a lot of toughness, which can give us to understand that he is cruel, but he really wants is to forge the strengths and confidence in his trainees, since any mistake that can be made in a real situation, can put at risk the lives of many people. Also noteworthy is the work of Chi McBride, Donnie Wahlberg and Jordana Brewster.
Another aspect is the setting of the film, where you can see the work of the production and director Justin Lin. The Annapolis academy looks pretty good and even more when you know that this film did not have the help of the Department of the Navy and the Department of Defense of the United States, so the production had to work on the basis of some known data and research they did on their own. The music used in The Challenge is really good, we can see music in emotional moments, but also emotional ones. I think everything is well represented. What I don't see is so much special effects, maybe because it doesn't show any kind of war and it even looks like training with firearms. The film focuses much more on the training and boxing at the Annapolis Naval Academy than anything else.

Final Opinion
Annapolis (The Challenge) is a good movie with which we can have a great time with the plot, which may not be the favorite of many, but it really shows us what it wants to convey which is the personal improvement of Jake Huard, who despite not having the support of anyone, not having much of the required academic knowledge, but what he did not lack was tenacity and wanting to achieve their goals, even though at times he wanted to give up. Really, beyond anything else, this is what I keep from this film. In addition to the excellent performances of James Franco and Tyrese Gibson, which are very good. I invite you to see Annapolis if you have not yet done so and give an opinion. I emphasize that this review is according to my experience, it is a personal opinion and is not making a professional criticism.

›Annapolis (film): A reasonably entertaining film with typical story progression@gooddream2837d
I don't just mean typical, it flat out steals exact elements from other movies but you know what? That's fine, it is still entertaining enough and worth seeing save a few eye-rolling moments.
Jake Huard (James Franco) is an amateur boxer who works a job building Navy ships and basically doesn't feel much satisfaction with how his life is going. One day on a long shot he is accepted into a prestigeous officer program in the Naval Academy that just happens to have a boxing tournament called the Brigades. Of course Jake ends up being a star in the tournament (because we wouldn't have much of a film if he was eliminated in the first round of qualifying) and of course the person he eventually has to be against in the final is an officer that he has butted heads with since day one.
The other elements that are stolen from other films is the meeting of a girl at a bar and unsuccessfully flirting with her only to find out that she is an officer in the very Naval program that Jake joins the following day (Top Gun anyone?)
One of Jake's fellow classmates and also roomate is a pudgy fella who has trouble finishing the physical aspects of the program and Jake helps him to not give up. While this was borrowed / stolen from many military oriented films, Full Metal Jacket is the first one to spring to mind.
While this movie is certainly not going to win any awards it does have some interesting aspect to in that the Navy did not approve this movie and had a real problem with how inaccurately it depicts the Naval programs. Even more fun than that is the fact that James Franco and Tyrese Gibson got along so poorly on set that there were many actual fights between the two of them while filming the movie. Both of them have said they refuse to work with the other on any future projects.
I can't say that this movie is a must see but someone recently responded to a post of mine that said something along the lines of "if there is absolutely nothing else on, this is ok." This is pretty much how i feel about this movie. It is corny, predictable, and even dumb in parts. At least Mark Wahlberg's brother got some work out of the deal. The film lost 10 million dollars at the box office (doh!)
