Some might say not much—that simply avoiding the topic during gatherings is enough—but the reality is quite different, especially when those views clash with a person's core principles and beliefs. It is no secret that we live in a deeply polarized world, where opposing stances and the ways people assert them are becoming increasingly evident. Anniversary explores this very theme: how a single vision for the country can completely transform—and ultimately destroy—both a family and an entire nation. After all, there is nothing wrong with freedom of expression or people thinking whatever they please; things only become complicated when one of those ideas is radical to its very core.
Que tanto puede llegar a afectar las diversas ideologías y formas de ver una sociedad en una familia? - algunos dirán que no tanto, que simplemente con no hablar del tema en reuniones es suficiente pero la realidad es otra y más cuando esas visiones chocan con los principios y con todo aquello en lo que cree una persona. Para nadie es un secreto que vivimos en un mundo 100% polarizado, en donde cada vez son más evidentes las diferentes posturas y las formas que tiene la gente para hacerlas valer. Anniversary va de esto, va de como una simple visión de país puede cambiar por completo y destruir a una familia y a una nación entera. Porque claro, no tiene nada malo la libertad de expresión y que las personas piensen lo que quieran; todo se complica cuando uno de esos pensamientos es puramente radical en toda su esencia.
We are introduced to an average family headed by Ellen (Diane Lane) and Paul (Kyle Chandler), parents of four children. She is a highly respected university professor, while he is a chef who owns his own restaurant. As they mark their 25th wedding anniversary, they decide to celebrate with all their children and other guests. Their three daughters are vastly different—like oil and water (a comedian, a lawyer, and a genius youngest sibling)—while their son is a failed writer who has fallen for Liz (Phoebe Dynevor), the source of all the trouble. Liz is a writer with extremely radical, authoritarian ideals that are gaining significant ground and support across the country; her book, The Change, has been a success, propelling her to a prominent position within this burgeoning movement in the United States.
Estamos ante una familia promedio en donde Ellen (Diane Lane) y Paul (Kyle Chandler) son las cabeza y padres de 4 hijos. Ella es una profesora universitaria muy respetada; él es un chef que tiene su propio restaurante. Ambos están celebrando sus 25 años de casados y deciden celebrarlos con todos sus hijos y demás invitados. Sus tres hijas mujeres son muy diferentes entre si, pero cual agua y aceite (una comediante, una abogada y la menor es una genio) y el varón es un escritor fracasado que se enamoró de Liz (Phoebe Dynevor), la raíz de todos los problemas. Liz es una escritora con unos ideales sumamente radicales y autoritarios los cuales están ganando terreno y mucho apoyo en el país; su libro, (The Change), ha sido un éxito y eso la ha puesto en un lugar privilegiado en ese movimiento naciente en los Estados Unidos.
All of this deeply unsettles Ellen; after all, how could someone with such a radical mindset have found their way into the family? This is the moment the family's harmony, peace, and domestic stability crumble as a major ideological battle erupts. The crisis also exposes underlying issues and conflicts, ensuring that nothing will ever be the same again. From this point on, everything goes downhill: the family fractures completely, the country becomes increasingly radicalized, and some individuals even undergo personality shifts due to these changes. It serves as a perfect metaphor for the current situation in many countries—with the United States being the most obvious example. It had been a long time since I saw a film of such high quality—so raw and realistic—because, while it may resemble a dystopia, the truth is that it isn't one. The erosion of democratic values in today's societies mirrors exactly what the film seeks to portray.
Todo esto descoloca mucho a Ellen porque claro, como es posible que alguien con semejante mentalidad tan radical haya llegado a la familia. Acá es cuando toda la armonía, la paz y la convivencia de esa familia se desmorona porque comienza una lucha ideológica importante, dicha crisis también destapa otros problemas y conflictos que ya habían lo que ocasiona que nada vuelva a ser como ante. A partir de aquí todo va cuesta abajo, la familia se fractura por completo, el país cada vez se radicaliza más, algunas personas cambian hasta de personalidad por todos estos cambios; es la metáfora perfecta de lo que pasa en la actualidad en muchos países siendo Estados Unidos el más evidente. Tenía tiempo que no veían una película tan buena, de tanta calidad y tan cruda y real porque claro, aquello parece una distopia pero la verdad es que no lo es. La pérdida de valores democráticos que están sufriendo las sociedades hoy en día no se alejan en nada con lo que pretende mostrar el film.
Censorship, persecution, the imposition of a monolithic ideology, a decline in the quality of life—this is what that family and the country are about to experience due to the ideological extremes of a few. Added to the political and social issues is the ensuing family chaos. Every member of that family will suffer—directly or indirectly—the consequences of Liz’s mindset. Watching this film is a truly intense experience; it features a profound plot that deeply resonates with the viewer. To be clear, it is a psychological and political thriller charged with tension, discomfort, and a sense of powerlessness. It demonstrates that even if you don’t get involved in politics, politics will inevitably get involved with you. I don’t think films like this should be viewed merely as fiction; while there may be an element of political propaganda—perhaps even the intention of director Jan Komasa—the harsh truth is that we aren't so far removed from the reality depicted on screen. This isn't the first Komasa film I’ve seen; The Good Boy, which I reviewed a few weeks ago, is also his work, confirming his knack for creating cinema that is both unsettling and suspenseful.
Censura, persecución, la imposición de un pensamiento unico, disminución de la calidad de vida; todo esto es lo que esa familia y el país comenzará a experimentar por culpa de los extremos ideológicos de unos cuantos. Al tema político/social hay que sumarle el caos familiar que se va a originar. TODOS los integrantes de esa familia van a padecer, directa o indirectamente, las consecuencias del pensamiento de Liz. De verdad la experiencia de ver esta película es bien intensa, es una trama muy profunda con la que uno puede empatizar mucho. Para que lo tengan claro es un thriller psicológico/político lleno de tensión, de incomodidad, de impotencia. Es una muestra de que la política, así tu no te metas en ella, igual ella se va a meter contigo. Creo que estas películas no hay que mirarlas como una mera ficción; si, de repente hay un poco de propaganda política detrás, capaz esa es la intención de Jan Komasa, su director, pero la dura verdad es que no estamos tan alejados de la realidad de lo que allí sucede. No es la primera película que veo de Komasa, The Good Boy, la cual reseñé hace unas semanas es de él también por lo que se confirma su cine incomodo y tensionante.
The cast is incredible. Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler (the current Green Lantern), McKenna Grace, Madeline Brewer, Zoey Deutch—every single lead actor stands out. I find Dylan O'Brien's role—playing Liz's son and husband—to be the most striking; he embodies the human degradation that comes with the pursuit of power. It shows how one can betray one's own flesh and blood for a share of power—power that is ultimately illusory, as he eventually realizes himself. And this, friends, happens in many families around the world, torn apart by political ideology. Ultimately, this is a film everyone should see, both for its quality and for the message it conveys. The ending fits the story perfectly; it is simultaneously sad and terrifying, showing us that radicalism is real—or can be—and that its destructive potential should never be underestimated. It runs for nearly two hours, yet not a moment is wasted; it keeps you glued to your seat from start to finish. I’ve included the trailer below.
Su elenco es de locos. Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler (el actual Linterna Verde), McKenna Grace, Madeline Brewer, Zoey Deutch; absolutamente todos los protagonistas destacan. El papel de Dylan O'Brien, el hijo y esposo de Liz, creo que es el mas impactante porque es el reflejo de la degradación humana ante el poder; el como puedes traicionar a toda tu sangre por una cuota de dicho poder el cual es ficticio porque al final él mismo se dará cuenta de eso. Y esto amigos, pasa en muchas familias alrededor del mundo, separadas por una ideología política. La conclusión a la que puedo llegar es que es un film de todo el mundo debería de ver, tanto por lo buena que es como por el mensaje que busca dar. Su final va muy acorde a todo, es uno triste y aterrador a la vez porque nos muestra que el alcance del radicalismo puede ser o es real y su capacidad destructora no debería de ponerse en dudas. Dura casi 2 horas pero no tiene desperdicio, pegado a la silla de principio a fin. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.

We’re halfway through the year, and there are still plenty of movies left to watch—some with completely different concepts, new directors, and, best of all, the ability to leave the viewer satisfied by the end, because otherwise it wouldn’t be the same. That’s why Anniversary is here—it all starts with a small family celebration, and as the story unfolds, a game of manipulation, power, and differences begins, exploring how people can change simply to be liked, with these elements being essential to creating something meaningful.
Estamos a mitad de años y todavía quedan muchas películas por ver, donde algunas son con ideas totalmente distintas, directores nuevos y lo mejor lograr que el espectador al terminar puede quedar contento, ya que si no sería lo mismo. Por eso llega Anniversary, donde todo parte de una pequeña celebración familiar y a medida que la historia va avanzando comienza un juego de manipulación, poder, diferencias y como las personas pueden cambiar simplemente para caer bien, siendo esos elementos los necesarios para así poder crear algo valioso.
From the very beginning, the film seems a bit slow, depicting a family where love is perfect and there are moments of laughter, just like in any family. The film’s premise is to showcase a political movement and how it can have an impact, creating a conflict that leads us to wonder: Will the family be able to hold together? Will all the family members see eye to eye? This is where the tension begins to build.
Another aspect that works well is the use of the country’s situation to create something more compelling—a situation for which no one is prepared. As a result, each character plays a very significant role, precisely because they have different ideas, fears, and ways of understanding what’s happening. It’s simply a way of showing how people who love each other begin to drift apart because they think differently—a reality we all experience, where every change stems from an argument, leading to a breakup.
La película desde un principio parece algo muy lenta, mostrando una familia donde el amor es perfecto, momentos de risa, como ocurre en cualquiera familia. Donde la idea de la película es mostrar un movimiento político y como eso puede llegar a afectar, logrando que a partir de allí cree un conflicto que nos lleva a preguntarnos ¿Podrá la familia resistir? ¿Estarán todos los miembros de una familia de acuerdo?, es aquí donde la tensión va creciendo.
Otras de las cosas que funciona es usar situación país para generar algo más interesante, siendo una situación en que la nadie está preparado y por eso cada personaje cuenta con un papel muy bueno, por el mismo hecho de tener diferentes ideas, miedos y también su manera de entender lo que está ocurriendo. Donde simplemente es una forma de ver cómo personas que se quieren comienzan a alejarse por pensar diferente, siendo una realidad que todos pasamos y todo cambio llega por una discusión, ocasionando una ruptura.
That’s why, as the film Anniversary progresses, the focus shifts from what’s happening outside to what’s happening inside that house, showing how those changes can ultimately affect our relationships and the way we see the world. Ultimately, it addresses politics, power, and a society that is beginning to transform, as well as our decisions, our fears, and how difficult it can be to stay united when we all start heading in different directions.
Por eso esta película Anniversary a medida que avanza, ya no es lo que ocurre afuera, sino dentro de esa casa, demostrando cómo esos cambios pueden terminar afectando nuestras relaciones y nuestra manera de ver el mundo. Donde a la final habla sobre política, de poder y de una sociedad que comienza a transformarse, además de nuestras decisiones, de nuestros miedos y de lo complicado que puede ser mantenernos unidos cuando todos comenzamos a caminar en direcciones diferentes.

Some movies start off light and cool, and you think you have them all figured out only for the ending to catch you off guard and the message stays with you long after the credits roll. One of such films is Anniversary (2025). As always, I checked the cast list before watching. Seeing familiar actors like Phoebe Dynevor, Diane Lane, Dylan O'Brien and Zoey Deutch put my mind at ease.
