The name Cronenberg is associated by many with the master of insect horror full of surreal and meaningful scenes, but David, has a son Brandon equally talented, who has created an extraordinary film.
Antiviral is a surreal story about a fan who is infatuated enough with a celebrity to want to be "close to her" It's a film that works perfectly right now, where the world of celebrities and instragram models is creating an imaginary world of the ideal, and fans want a bite of that piece. In a surreal way, the director portrays human nature, which greedily wants more and more just to get the piece it wants. We live in a world where celebrities live as public figures and to a large extent it is people who decide how to behave and what to say, thanks to that they become puppets of corporations. I liked the film very much because it exposes not only people's notions about celebrities, but also perfectly shows that people have long begun to lose their humanity in favor of imaginary standards that slowly destroy.
The film tells the story of Syd March, who works for a company that sells celebrity diseases. Syd not only sells diseases in his company, but also takes various samples from the company and sells them to a live cell trafficker who produces celebrity meat.
Syd leads an ordinary life, though each new sample lift comes with consequences, but the worst begins to happen when big star Hannah Guest suddenly dies. Syd will have to find a cure because she has contracted a mysterious disease. The first half is a perfect portrayal of society as it lives with celebrities, every news on TV shows a piece of the perfect celebrity, and ordinary people wanting to be like them decide to get sick. The second half is Syd's struggle with himself and whether what he is doing is still right in this crazy world, and trying to find the man who may have infected. The third and the finale is the perfect depiction of the struggle for "meat" and the meat is always the star, who like a piece of cake, every company wants to have in order to make money from it. This is not an easy film, in some places the surrealism is quite evident, in others it is just lightly directing the viewer through the repetition of certain sequences to make him realize that the procedure will always go round in circles. It's not a brutal film, it's more of a weird and unconventional film, but as far as brutality is concerned it's fairly mild, even though the subject matter is very serious.
It's worth seeing and looking at this film as just the idealized fashion and instagram beauty that corporations produce and mortals want to bite a piece for themselves to be like the famous ones. The finale is interestingly realized and feels like a whiff of a paternal hand where madness blends into a typically Cronenbergian style. It is interesting to mention that in 1:32 there is a portrait of David Cronenberg on the wall for a split second. Although the film is lightly based on Sci fi and was shot in 2012, it fits perfectly in 2022, when you read articles about how a woman from twitch sells her underwear or bath water so that ordinary people can have a piece of her Cronenberg's son's film even steps into our mind and tries to wreak havoc for a while, making us look at the idealized world in a different way. 9/10

Nazwisko Cronenberg wielu kojarzy się z mistrzem owadziego horroru pełnego surrealistycznych i wymownych scen, jednak David, ma syna Brandona równie uzdolnionego, który stworzył nietuzinkowy film.
Antiviral to surrealistyczna opowieść o fanach, którzy są na tyle mocno zauroczeni gwiazda, ze chce być „blisko niej” To film który działa idealnie właśnie teraz, gdzie świat celebrytów i instragramowych modelek tworzy wyimaginowany świat ideału, a fani chcą ugryźć ten kawałek. Reżyser w dość surrealistyczny sposób ukazuje ludzka nature, która zachłannie chce więcej i więcej byle by zdobyć upragniony kawałek. Żyjemy w świecie gdzie celebryci żyją jako osoby publiczne i w dużej mierze to ludzie decydują jak maja się zachowywać i co mówić dzięki temu stają się marionetkami korporacji. Film mi się bardzo podobał, gdyż obnaża nie tylko pojęcie ludzi wobec gwiazd, ale tez idealnie ukazuje, ze ludzie już dawno zaczęli zatracać swoje człowieczeństwo na rzecz wyimaginowanych standardów, które powoli wyniszczają.
Film opowiada historie Syda Marcha, który pracuje dla firmy sprzedającej choroby gwiazd. Zwyczajni ludzie chcąc poczuć to co ich ukochana gwiazda zarażają się coraz bardziej dziwnymi chorobami, które maja „jednoczyć z gwiazda” Syd nie tylko sprzedaje choroby w swojej firmie, ale tez wynosi różne próbki z firmy i sprzedaje handlarzowi żywych komórek który wytwarza mięso gwiazd.
Syd wiedzie zwyczajne życie, choć każde kolejne wyniesienie próbek wiąże się z konsekwencjami, jednak najgorsze zaczyna się dziać, kiedy wielka gwiazda Hannah Guest nagle umiera. Syd będzie musiała znaleźć lekarstwo gdyż zaraził się tajemnicza choroba. Pierwsza połowa to idealne ukazanie społeczeństwa jak żyje gwiazdami, każdy News w tv ukazuje kawałek idealnej gwiazdy, a zwykli ludzie chcą być jak oni decydują się na choroby. Druga połowa to walka Syda ze sobą oraz z tym czy to co robi jest jeszcze słuszne w tym oszalałym świecie, oraz próba odnalezienia człowieka który mógł zarazić. Trzecia i finał to idealne ukazanie walki o „mięso” a mięsem zawsze jest gwiazda, która niczym kawałek tortu, każda firma chce mieć by moc zarobić na niej. To nie jest film łatwy, miejscami surrealizm bywa dość wyraźny innym to lekkie tylko nakierowanie widza poprzez powtarzanie pewnych sekwencji by uświadomić, ze proceder zawsze będzie krążył w koło. Nie jest film brutalny, bardziej bywa dziwny miejscami nieszablonowy, ale jeśli chodzi o brutalność to jest w miarę łagodny choć temat jest bardzo poważny.
Warto zobaczyć i spojrzeć na ten film jak właśnie wyidealizowane piękno modowe i instagramowe, które wytwarzają korporacje, a śmiertelnicy chcą ugryźć kawałek dla siebie by być jak ci sławni. Finał jest ciekawie zrealizowany i czuć w nim powiew ojcowskiej ręki gdzie szaleństwo łączy się w typowo Cronenberowski styl. Jako ciekawostkę wspomnę, ze w 1:32 pojawia się na ułamek sekundy portret Davida Cronenberga na ścianie. Mimo, ze film opiera się lekko o Sci fi i był nakręcony w 2012 to w 2022 idealnie wpasowuje się, kiedy czyta się artykuły jak kobieta z twitcha sprzedaje swoją bieliznę czy wodę po kąpieli by zwykli ludzie mieli kawałek Jej Film syna Cronenberga wręcz wchodzi butem w nasz umysł i na chwile stara się spustoszyć, przez to inaczej spojrzymy na wyidealizowany świat. 9/10
