    This poor boy 😢🦌👹

The Native American mythological tale of the Wendigo spirit comes to life in horrifying detail with Antlers. This film will have you traumatized with fear and also overflowing with sadness. If you are unfamiliar with the Wendigo, then you are in for quite the story.

This story takes place in a small town in central Oregon called Cispus Falls. There isn't much to look forward to for most people in this part of the USA. Lucas and his younger brother Aiden live alone in some dump with their father Frank. Lucas still goes to school throughout the week, but Aiden spends all of his time with his dad. This means he gets to play with rocks outside of an abandoned mine while his dad is down below cooking meth in seclusion. It truly is a sad life, but this way of living is a reality for some.

While Aiden waits for his father to finish cooking with a buddy, he begins to think that his father may never come back. Upon going into the darkness to look for his dad, they both are attacked by a creature from the depths of the lightless and cold mine. The boy and his father manage to survive the attack but are both changed forever.

The father becomes deathly ill and can feel that he is no longer himself. He locks himself in a room and explains to Lucas and Aiden that it is not safe to be around him. Soon Aiden begins to show similar symptoms and he too is locked away. This leaves Lucas to take care of himself since his mother died a while back and now his father cannot be there for him either. A boy aged 11-13 must find a way to survive, all while continuing to go to school.

It doesn't take long for Lucas's teacher Julia Meadows to notice that something is going on with Lucas. He shows many symptoms of having a traumatic home life, but she has no idea just how bad it is. Julia urges her brother/town sheriff Paul to help her figure out what is going on. Nobody takes Julia's concern about Lucas seriously until torn-up dead bodies start showing up around town.

This sickness that Frank and Aiden are possessed by is not an illness but instead originates from the evil Wendigo spirit. This shape-shifting creature takes the form of a demonic deer of sorts, although it is far more terrifying than just that. The power that this beast possesses is not something the average human can combat. The bloodthirst is something that Lucas himself must fulfill in order to keep his father and brother around for as long as possible.

Just wait until you see how horrible the living conditions are that Lucas is forced to put up with. To him it is normal, but to the average person, the level of filth is absurd and unacceptable. You will feel for the boy and want nothing more than for him to be saved from his miserable life. The question is, can anything put an end to the Wendigo spirit and its everlasting need to kill?

This film has a lot to deal with. There is plenty of mystery, but also some pretty nasty moments where you will just be glad you are in your bed or on your couch, rather than living the life that people like Lucas are stuck with. Check out the trailer below and give the movie a watch sometime. I saw it on HBO Max, but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere too.

This is the last horror film I have watched in recent weeks along with Lamb, which was very disappointing to me, and The Innocents, which was quite good, original, and enjoyable. I wasn't completely sure about watching this film because even though the plot could be intriguing and entertaining, I suspected this could have been a crappy production. However, I decided to give it a watch and I am glad I did because this was among my favorite horror productions of recent months.

This was the type of movie I was expecting Lamb to be. Lamb was a film I recently watched and I had high expectations about it. The plot was about a couple on a remote farm that suddenly sees a human baby being born from a lamb, it has a human baby body but a lamb's head. It has the potential of being a very sinister story but its slow pace was too much for me.

Antlers, on the other hand, has a somewhat similar mystery, but in my opinion, it has the proper pace for this type of story as well as the proper settings. This movie belongs to several genres such as horror, fantasy, as well as drama, and the way the mystery and dramatic events are built up was extremely well done.

    What was the movie about?

The movie is about a strange kid who is always quiet, submissive, and seems to have a lot of personal problems. He doesn't seem well-nourished, and his clothes tend to be in a bad state almost all the time. It is clear to anyone that pays attention that this kid is probably living in a very dysfunctional and chaotic home. He doesn't appear to have any friends in school, and as a result of this, he is very lonely.

The only person who begins to realize something seems off is his teacher. She checks some of his drawings and quickly concludes there are important problems affecting this kid. Due to personal reasons, she will be a key person in discovering the craziness the kid was living in.

The movie takes its time to provide the viewer with enough explanation about the kid's troubling circumstances. At the beginning of it, we can see something happened but we cannot really see exactly what it was, we can only know that whatever happened at that moment, is what ended up changing everything.

As the movie advances, we will start to see glimpses of the darkness, and later on, what really happened and the series of events that caused so much pain and trauma to this kid's life will become very clear.

Conveniently, the teacher lives with his brother who is the sheriff of the town, and this will speed up some of the police research work necessary to discover what's going on. The nature of the mystery was hard to understand at the beginning, but there will be a key scene where everything is properly explained so any viewer can fully understand the entire mystery and its origins.

The film clearly belongs to the horror genre but it wasn't really scary. There were some scenes that could also be considered action, and overall, I liked each of the scary encounters and all of the scenes that could be considered "scary". Something I really didn't like was one of the final scenes that could be considered as a "final battle" if this was a video game. It felt super generic and made me think that part of the story was the result of some low effort written by the creators. However, despite that crappy "final battle", I enjoyed pretty much everything about the film.

Main names associated with the film

Scott Cooper worked both as a writer as well as a director for this film. He has directed some great films such as Black Mass and Hostiles, where he also worked as a writer by the way. Crazy Heart is another well-known film written by him as well.

Henry Chaisson was another person who also worked as a writer in Antlers. He doesn't have much experience working as a writer for regular-length productions, and the only previous occasion where he did so was in one episode of the series Servant.

Nick Antosca was the original creator of the idea of this story. He is a very popular writer and has worked in some amazing series such as Channel Zero, Brand New Cherry Flavor, The Act among many others.

Jeremy T. Thomas was the kid actor playing the main role. His young age hasn't prevented him from participating in several productions such as the series Paradise Lost, The Righteous Gemstones, and Lore.

Keri Russell plays the main adult character who is a school teacher. She is quite a popular actress and in recent years has worked in several well-known productions such as Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, The Americans, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, among many others.

Last but not least, we have Jesse Plemons, who plays her brother and works as the sheriff of the small town. Plemons is also a very well-known actor and some of his recent productions are Judas and the Black Messiah, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, and El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.

How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?

The performance from the cast was very good, and I especially liked how the kid actor played the troubled main role. The 2 main adult actors also did a great job with their performances.

The scenery was perfect for this type of story. A little town, where kids can easily walk all over the town and go on their own from their home to the school and vice-versa. Where there are a lot of woods for tons of mysterious stuff to happen. As I always say, little towns are among the best settings for horror stories.

    Final thoughts

Antlers was a perfectly acceptable film, with a proper pace that allowed the film to make some character development, as well as prepare the viewers for the dark mystery that awaits them. For me, the pace of this story was just perfect. Not too slow and not too rushed.

I also enjoyed how it explores the dramatic situation of the main character, and how he tries to handle a crazy situation that is completely above his capabilities. Something that might have been a bit exaggerated was the extreme involvement of the teacher in all of this dark mystery, but this is partly explained by some information about her past, which makes it understandable for her to take that decision.

This is a great film to watch for people in the mood of watching a horror production mainly focused on mystery and drama.

    Thanks for reading!

In a small town somewhere in bleak Oregon.

There are plenty of films touching on the problem of molestation, but to make a horror film out of it is not often the case. The film is interesting and builds up the atmosphere and mystery to the finale. The first half of the film sets up the events in an interesting way, the middle is a full on portrayal of a scary place, well the gore unfortunately lets it down. While 60% of the film is a combination of legend and trauma plot the last 40% blurs everything on many levels.

The film tries to build a dirty, often un-American atmosphere, which works very well for most of the time, but towards the end you see the infantile nature of the characters, which destroys the legend, and an interestingly drawn character who eventually becomes like a Comandos.

The theme of abuse appears here and it is well handled, if we cut out the whole horror theme and the finale we would get an interesting film about the trauma of a 12 year old boy who lives with a monster, but as it is his father he still loves him as much as his brother.

    24830B24-80F9-4739-B60A-F9CD7C9F9CE5.jpeg source.

Growing up emotionally too early causes the boy to lose his childhood and has to take care of the house, even though he knows his father does many bad things. The problem of this film lies in the main character, who was also molested by her father, but here in places the character is annoying and often forgets who she really is.

The finale with her is very poorly written so we get something like a pank heroine dropped in, did her thing and everyone lived happily ever after. Up to a certain point it was intriguing, but the final exit of the heroine from the house and going to the mine ruins everything. It could have been a horror film that would also work as a drama, but the finale unfortunately spoils the whole concept.

    67EF5880-E3B8-4300-84F2-E1130CF5480C.jpeg source.

It's a horror film that you'll watch and forget by the last few minutes of the film, although if you keep your eyes firmly fixed on the finale the director presents an interesting vision of torment, abuse, growing up too early and escaping hell.

The film is also lightly inspired by the famous legend of Vertigo, I must admit, that when it doesn't appear in its full glory it was very cool and many things worked on the psyche, but as I say the finale spoils everything.

The film is good, but not great.

W małym miasteczku gdzieś w ponurym Oregonie.

    D7073209-9F07-4F77-8868-E12AF2C3F63D.jpeg zrodlo.

Pierwsza połowa filmu interesująco przestawia wydarzenia, środek to w pełni ukazanie przerażającego miejsca, cóż ginął niestety zawodzi.
