A Japanese period drama/action film directed by Ryühei Kitamura. It stars Aya Ueto (as Azumi). Azumi is an adaptation of the manga series of the same name created by Yü Koyama. The story is set during the war era in Japan where Azumi lives with a group of orphans with whom she trains daily in swordplay and then becomes part of a group of assassins whose sole objective is to assassinate Hideyoshi Toyotomi and the other hostile warlords in power, in order to prevent a civil war.

Es una película japonesa de época, drama y acción dirigida por Ryühei Kitamura. Es Protagonizada por Aya Ueto (como Azumi). Azumi es una adaptación de la serie de manga que lleva el mismo nombre creada por Yü Koyama. La historia se desarrolla en la época de guerras en Japón donde Azumi vive con un grupo de huérfanos con los que entrena diariamente el manejo de las espadas para luego forma parte de un grupo de asesinos que tienen como único objetivo asesinar a Hideyoshi Toyotomi y a los demás Señores hostiles en el poder, con el fin de evitar una Guerra Civil.

In this story the sensei and caretaker of the orphans constantly talks to them about a mission although they all ignore what it is, they are all just kids and they are totally excited about the idea of carrying out whatever their sensei asks them to do. They all live together, bond and train daily with the unknown mission in mind, when the long awaited day arrives, they can't imagine how crazy their first assignment is and what's worse, only half of them survive.

En esta historia el sensei y encargado de los huérfanos constantemente les habla de una "misión" aunque todos ignoran de que se trata, todos son a penas unos niños y están totalmente emocionados con la idea de llevar acabo lo que sea que le pida su sensei. Todos ellos conviven, crean lazos y entrenan diariamente teniendo en mente la dichosa misión que desconocen, cuando el tan esperado día llega, no se imaginan lo descabellada que resulta su primera asignación y lo que es peor, solo la mitad de ellos sobrevive.

This story starts with a crude and sad scene, then it all gets pretty silly to say the least, since it's about children, but before long the first twist of the film although it makes sense why the truth is that it's very surprising and quite cruel. Japanese films of this type always have certain characteristics, loves that end in tragedy, many injustices, some rules back then don't seem to make sense, spurts of blood, excellent battle choreography, they also highlight a lot of wisdom and honour, I have always liked this kind of stories.

Esta historia empieza con una escena cruda y triste, luego todo se torna bastante tonto por decirlo de alguna manera, ya que se trata de niños, pero en poco tiempo el primer giro de la película aunque tiene sentido el por qué la verdad es que sorprende mucho y es bastante cruel. Las películas japonesas de este tipo siempre tienen ciertas características, amores que terminan en tragedia, muchas injusticias, algunas reglas de aquel entonces no parecen tener sentido, chorros de sangre, coreografías de batallas excelentes, también resaltan mucho sabiduría y honor, siempre me han gustado este tipo de historias.

To say the least this film is very raw, it's cruel, it's merciless, it shows the worst side of wars, it's also kind of silly, kind of funny, full of action and bloodbaths. The latter I particularly love about this film, the way the blood gushes out is great, despite being a 2003 film they achieved a lot with all the setting and so on, it was an amazing job.

Para decir lo menos esta película es muy cruda, es cruel, despiadada, muestran el peor lado de las guerras, es también algo tonta, algo divertida, llena de acción y baños de sangre. Esto último particularmente me encanta de este filme, la forma en la que la sangre brota es grandiosa, a pesar de ser una película del 2003 lograron mucho con toda la ambientación y demás, fue un trabajo increíble.

Azumi despite being the only girl in the group from the beginning seems to be the most capable, although she isn't the strongest of all, she is the fastest and her swordplay is exceptional. Also, being the only girl, most of her brothers are crazy about her, especially two of them seem very interested, but it's more than clear which of the two guys she likes.

Azumi a pesar de ser la unica chica en el grupo desde principio parece ser la más capaz, aunque no es la más fuerte de todos, si es la más rápida y su manejo de la espada es excepcional. Además, por ser la única chica la mayoría sus hermanos están loquitos por ella, especialmente dos de ellos parecen muy interesados, pero esta más que claro cual de los dos le gusta a ella.

The orphans are all young, from 14 years old and up, even so they're all very capable, each of them are great promises but once they become assassins it becomes difficult, because they had never killed anyone, they only trained each other and no matter how skilled you are, nothing prepares you to take the life of anyone on purpose, no matter the motives, whether they deserve it or not, it's definitely not something easy, even so they have no choice but to accept their reality and carry out the mission they were entrusted with.

Los huérfanos son todos pequeños de 14 años en adelante, aun así todos son muy capaces, cada uno de ellos son grandes promesas pero una vez que pasan a ser asesinos la cosa se torna difícil, pues nunca habían matado a nadie, solo entrenaban entre ellos y sin importar que tan hábil seas, nada te prepara para arrebatarle la vida a nadie adrede, sin importar los motivos, se lo merezca o no, definitivamente no es algo fácil, aun así ellos no tiene más remedio que aceptar su realidad y llevar a cabo la misión que se les encomendó.

Tokugawa Shogun, is the one who commissioned the sensei of the orphans to form this group of assassins to carry out these murders that would restore the long-awaited peace, 'cause as I mentioned before, some warlords for petty reasons wanted to start a war, and in order prevent that situation the sensei was commissioned to train a group to do the dirty work and thus bring peace. It isn't an easy mission at all, in fact it's extremely dangerous, many lose their lives trying.

Tokugawa Shogun, es quien le encarga al sensei de los huérfanos que forme este grupo de asesinos para llevar acabo estos asesinatos que restaurarian la tan ansiada paz, pues como ya mencione antes, algunos señores por razones mezquinas querían empezar una guerra, y con ese fin se le encargó al sensei entrenar a un grupo para que hicieran el trabajo sucio y así traer paz. No es una misión nada fácil, de hecho es extremadamente peligrosa, muchos pierden la vida intentándolo.

You can see how the new reality Azumi is facing is also changing her little by little, and at times she wonders if what she's doing is the right thing to do, because after all to avoid a major tragedy she's somehow forced to use violence to avoid a wave of unnecessary deaths, both her companions and herself try to stay focused on the goal, on the reason why they are doing such a thing and only then, they can go ahead with the important mission they were assigned.

Se puede ver como la nueva realidad a la que se enfrenta Azumi la va cambiando poco a poco, y en ocaciones se pregunta si lo que hace es lo correcto, porque después de todo para evitar una tragedia mayor ella se ve en cierta forma obligada a usar la violencia para evitar una oleada de muertes innecesarias, tanto sus compañeros como ella intentan mantenerse enfocados en el objetivo, en la razón por la que hacen tal cosa y solo así pueden seguir adelante con la misión tan importante que se les asignó.

If you like films full of action at all times, very bloody scenes, a lot of cruelty, honour, that touch that Asian culture has in its stories and incredible battles, this is an excellent choice, especially if you enjoy films in general no matter how old they may be, I invite you to watch it and even its second part, which I will review soon.
