I generally create content in this Community about series and movies that are currently showing, but I've decided that Thursdays will be dedicated to my posts about series or movies I've seen in the past, which is why I start the title with TBT and the name.

So, I'll start with this movie, "Bad Times at The Royale." It's not that old, it's from 2018, but I didn't remember it today simply because I was talking with a friend about movies with somewhat crazy stories and somewhat interesting casting, with actors and actresses I haven't normally seen together. And I remembered this one, whose plot was very crazy, but after adding and subtracting, I can say that, strangely, I did like it.

First, a little about the director. It's interesting that I'm familiar with his productions and have been a big fan of his work. Drew Goddard is responsible for series like Lost and High Potential. He's also responsible for films I love like World War Z and The Martian.

In 2018, he dared to assemble a diverse cast, with well-known faces playing fascinating characters, a tense atmosphere, and unexpected twists. The entire film will unfold over a single night.

Now, let me tell you that "Bad Times at The Royale" takes place in the 1970s. It was created as a luxury hotel, which also had the characteristic of being located on the border between Nevada and California, so part of the hotel allowed gambling, while the other part did not.

However, it was closed for many years after gaining a bad reputation. Now, it has reopened with very few guests. We will basically see the characters who will bring this film to life, which takes place in a single night.

The characters in "Bad Times at The Royale" have many secrets and interests that will be revealed throughout this night. We have characters as diverse as a priest or priest, a singer, a girl who we'll see kidnapping another girl, a salesman who is discovering a number of spying devices in the rooms, the hotel manager, and Chris Hessworth himself as a kind of leader of a very strange cult.

This film is full of twists and turns, with each character dealing with their own problems and dark lives while trying to survive this action-packed and ultimately tense night, as we begin to see or discover their secrets at the same time.

    ME GUSTÓ.png

    • I absolutely must say that the performances were excellent. Overall, all the actors and actresses played these characters without any qualms, in my opinion. Both how they presented themselves with the characteristics of their personalities and how they behaved in the most tense scenes or those absolutely unexpected twists.

    • The Hotel: The whole character they gave to The Royale is impressive, its location in a border area between Nevada and California. One part of the hotel is located in a state where gambling is allowed, and the other side where it is not allowed are the rooms. I thought this character was brilliant. Also, the false bottoms of the rooms, where you could spy through the mirrors, are a personal fear I have, and seeing it here was quite terrifying.

    • The twists in this story were very strong and crazy, although they didn't bother me at all. It was a crazy and fun story, just considering my personal taste.

    NO ME GUSTÓ.png

    • Before the film's full tension or action begins, it starts off very slowly. I almost gave up, but fortunately I didn't, and I was able to enjoy it.

    • Perhaps there were some somewhat forced or cartoonish endings. In my opinion, it could have maintained a more serious tone at times, and I would have liked it more. However, I think this is my very picky opinion. I decided to watch this film without any of that and enjoy it for what it is and what its director wanted to tell us in his personal style.

    RECOMIENDO A.png

Of course I recommend it. I rarely post about a movie or series I don't like, although if I have, it's almost the norm to do it about something I liked because it inspires a lot of passion and I'm able to explain the details easily.

Watch it especially with your partner or dad, so you can enjoy a crime and suspense film that's a bit strange or different in its approach.

I really appreciate having made it this far. See you in the next post.

  2. Bad Times at the El Royale (Película): una recomendable mezcla de géneros.@cristiancaicedo2729d

Si tienen alguna otra hipótesis, me gustaría escucharla.

  3. Bad Times at the El Royale Movie Review@filotasriza32804d

I just came up from cinema watching another movie for free called Bad Times at the El Royale. The movie can be considered a thriller although it's more like a drama-crime with a lot of mystery. Also note that we are talking about a big movie in terms of time as it is around 2 and a half hours long, so brace yourselves and buy popcorn!

The director and writer is the famous Drew Goddard who is known for Lost, The Cabin In The Woods and he also served as an executive producer of Daredevil (no wonder why this is still going well) and Defenders! The stars of the show are quite famous too but i won't tell you, for now i will keep the mystery and reveal them below!

    Story-Plot

The story starts at a hotel room (based on later events we get to know that it's set at the end of 50s) in which he hides something under that room and then he dies! Then 10 years are passed and we got introduced to the hotel which is called EL Royale and some guests appear. The hotel was quite famous back then as many well known people stayed there but for some reason that changed. Also in the center of the hotel there are borders that divide it in half with Nevada and California being the in-between states.

The characters or the "guests" as they introduced themselves are:

    • Darlene Sweet (Cynthia Erivo): A very good black singer that is now run out of money and tries her luck wherever she finds a chance to. Apparently she is the only one that doesn't hide her identity.
    • Father Flynn (Jeff Bridges): A priest that easily forgets things as to who he is, what he is doing there but there is more....
    • Laramie Seymour Sullivan (Jon Hamm): A Vacuum Salesman who seem a bit racist towards blacks but actually is completely another person.

    • Fuck You (Dakota Johnson): A woman with an attitude that we get to learn her name afterwords. She has quite the backstory though.
    • Miles Miller (Lewis Pullaman): The only employee that does everything from cleaning to appointing rooms and even be responsible for that bad. Guess what.....he is hiding something!
    • Billy Lee (Chris Hemsworth): He isn't exactly a guest so i won't reveal a single thing about him!

The whole atmosphere is noir like and it really reminded me of a Tarantino film. All the guests that came in the hotel are having different purposes and a little bit after they chose their rooms the film starts to get divided into chapters. The chapters are divided by each room and not only we get to see a little bit of what they are doing in there and by their perspective what's happening, we also have some flashbacks about their background. This is very important and awesome as we are coming closer and closer to the characters and at the same time the pieces of the puzzle slowly come together.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQmOaJciI7Q

    Spoilers Ahead Watch Out!

Soon enough we learn that Laramie Seymour Sullivan actually is an agent of the government or at least secret services and he has 2 missions. The first one is to learn if the rumors and info they have of the hotel are true and everything is true. Turns out the hotel has all the rooms wired and there is a secret door and stair that leads behind every room and the mirror in each room serves as a window that anything can be seen from the back.

The management of the hotel had Miles Miller watch specific famous people, with who they had sex or what they were talking hidden in they rooms and filmed them in order ofc to use that info for negotiations or extortion.

I won't reveal much more but as we learn each backstory and reasons as to why they are there, sudden events bring them all together facing each other or forming alliances the film becomes more and more interesting!

Is It Worth Watching & Why?

If you like that kind of genre then it's worth. The set is great as they have managed to create a true 1950-1970 atmosphere. Just imagine that in the film most of the times it was raining, when i get out of the cinema i thought it was raining too :P

The acting is magnificent, all the actors are just perfect and they have some hidden gems than at the start of the film they don't seem much but at the end i bet you will love them the most! There is indeed mystery and you just wanna learn wtf if happening and what's the backstory each ones has.

Also, there are some sudden shootings or generally sudden jump scares like that we are used to in thrillers. What's amazing though is that you actually never expect them. I had years to get surprised by a gunshot and i wasn't the only one, everyone in the cinema has the same reaction! (if this was a thriller with ghosts we would have shit our pants)

The only drawback was that a bunch of scenes were unnecessary and served no purpose, only to make me bored. Especially that disk got in my nerves. On the other hand maybe those unnecessary scenes made the jump scares so unexpected.

  4. Bad Times At The El Royale - Movie Review@coldsteem2815d

All roads lead to the El Royale. More accurately, all roads tend to end at the El Royale. The El Royale is a hotel that straddles the border between California and Nevada in Lake Tahoe. The hotel was a bustling attraction in the late fifties and early sixties. But it is the late sixties or early seventies and the luster is long gone. The Nevada side of the hotel lost its gaming license, removing one of the primary reasons that this aging hotel managed to draw customers. With the casino out of business, the hotel is down to one employee, Miles Miller (Lewis Pullman). Which seems to be plenty on a routine day.

One deadly night at the El Royale sees the convergence of stories told through the lens of room numbers. The Honeymoon Suite houses a curious G-man posing as an appliance salesman (Dwight/Laramie, played by Jon Hamm). Room four houses Father Flynn/Dock O'Kelly (Jeff Bridges) an ex-con with Alzheimer's disease. Flynn is searching for money hidden beneath the floor boards a decade earlier. If only he can recall which room. Darlene Sweet (Cynthia Erivo) is in room five. Sweet is a struggling singer who has a gig in Reno tomorrow. If she can survive tonight. Room seven houses sisters Emily (Dakota Johnson) and Rose (Cailee Spaeny) who appear to be on the run from a cult-like leader in California. That cult leader, Billy Lee (Chris Hemsworth) is headed toward the El Royale for a night of reckoning, as the El Royale is destined to give up her own secrets. In a dance of confession and redemption, the characters provide a voyeuristic view into buried secrets.

Bad Times at the El Royale seems to be more about the journey than the destination. It is a character study. The story weaves together lives that become intertwined on a dark, rainy night at a secluded hotel. The story meanders at times, trying to connect the vignettes from perspectives the knit together each of the stories into a broader fabric. The method works, but it bogs down a bit in the process at times. The characters are each given a short history, which helps inform the story and create a vignette type approach, which enriches the character while diverting from the main narrative arc. It worked, but it wasn't as tight as it could have been. I ended up enjoying the characters while feeling a bit distracted at times. It ended up being an interesting tale with a dark climax that added value to the film, making it worthwhile in the end. The story was written and directed by Drew Goddard who wrote the screenplays for several films I thoroughly enjoyed, including Cabin in the woods, World War Z and The Martian.

As a story that relies on rich characters, casting was essential. This film managed to deliver in that respect. The casting adequately delivered characters that added credibility to the story. Jon Hamm was a bit over-the-top initially, but he seemed believable as a Hoover-era special agent. Jeff Bridges is a perennial favorite. He is rarely bad. He really sold the idea that he was suffering in the early stages of Alzheimer's. He managed to be both criminal and likable at the same time. He also managed a credible relationship with Erivo's character. The two become a focal point of the story, so their chemistry was essential. The pair worked well together. But two actors who stood out to me in this film were Pullman as the troubled hotel clerk and Hemsworth as an evil cult leader. Pullman seemed weak, but was credible when a darker story of his past emerged. Hemsworth had an odd swagger as the charismatic leader of a hippie cult. I could almost smell the hemp and patchouli.

Bad Times at the El Royale earned an R rating for some brief full frontal nudity, language, drinking and violence. For the most part, this film is violent. There are quite a few deaths depicted in the film. The film also features a bit of graphic drug use. The content was contextual, although the nudity seemed a bit odd. It was very subdued and easy to miss in the background of the cult compound. The drug use was depicted a bit more dramatically. The content is fine for teen audiences or better. Most people will miss the nudity altogether. And the other aspects of this film seem to be pretty common on television and video games today. The film felt a bit long, with a run time that stretched two hours, 21 minutes. I think it could have been pared down a bit with tighter editing.

Bad Times as the El Royale is not Drew Goddard's best work. But it is an interesting story. I liked the characters and felt that the ending helped justify the time I had invested in the film. It was a bit long, with pacing that trudged forward at times. The approach worked, but also helped bog the story down. The apex of the film drew the elements together nicely, creating an intense finale that included an ending that made the journey worthwhile. While not perfect, this film was worth seeing at the theater. I have seen a few mediocre films recently. This one was redemptive. In more ways than one. Worth a matinee viewing at the theater. 7.5/10.
