Hello all otaku friends, I hope you are feeling great today... today I want to talk to you about an anime that can certainly touch your hearts, because of the emotional journey that this story will take you through, this story can catch you and surely will not let you go until the last chapter. When I saw it some time ago I did not expect to enjoy it so much, it was not my kind of anime, but thank goodness I gave it a chance... it is a series that meets very well in several aspects, it gives you a mixture of action, emotion and some intrigue... all with a dark, strange tone, that really makes you think... today I'm going to talk about the anime Banana Fish, and why I feel it's very special.
First, I have to give credit to the rhythm of the first half of this anime, when I started watching it, I was completely hooked from the beginning.... The plot moves forward in a way that doesn't feel rushed, which is a great merit for the way they are telling this story, as it is direct, it doesn't beat around the bush.. the anime goes straight to the point, introducing us to the characters, first we meet Ash Lynx, and his complicated gangster world... Here we will find power struggles with the mafia, and of course, a mysterious drug, I really appreciated how everything felt organic... the plot is not given to you chewed up like some other anime, but it's not too convoluted either, every revelation felt good to me, and you will surely be glued to the screen wanting to know what will happen next...
Talking a bit about the main characters, Ash is easily one of the best protagonists I've seen in a long time.. his character is very well developed, and it's really easy to root for him, even when you know his past and his flaws, he's strong, smart and very witty.. although he also lets out some vulnerability, especially in the way he interacts with Eiji. Their bond is one of the highlights of the series...I wouldn't really consider it romance, but it's true that there's a lot of emotional depth to their relationship, and that's undeniable. Ash's journey from being a gang leader who thinks he's invincible is incredibly fascinating.. and while the second half of the series loses a bit of that strength that I loved so much, it never completely deviates from the main character's emotional arc.. and that keeps you hooked and wanting to know how it all ends.

Talking a little bit about the visual aspect of Banana Fish, it's an anime that is animated in a very cool way.... I was constantly amazed with the detailed artwork in terms of the backgrounds.. those that are inspired by real world locations, particularly New York locations.. the way these are portrayed and how the city is reflected, adds a lot of dynamics to the atmosphere, I mean all the dirty alleys, the skyscrapers, the whole scenery feels very alive... The contrast between the beauty of the city and the dark and dangerous underworld in which the protagonist operates is visually stunning... it's rare to see an anime so committed to portraying a foreign city, and it's something they excelled at, and obviously I'd like to give them a lot of credit for that...
They didn't just create a generic urban backdrop, they gave us a version of New York that feels very raw and at times menacing, the influence of American culture and cinema in this story is another thing that stood out to me the most.. there are many situations or visuals here that will surely appeal to fans of American gangster cinema.. particularly the way the mafia is portrayed. There are scenes that look like they are straight out of a crime thriller, such as interesting confrontations and power struggles that will make any “Godfather” fan proud.
You can really tell that those involved in this story were heavily inspired by foreign, American media.. but they also managed to do it in a unique way, not everything is just a cheap copy, I loved the little literary references sprinkled throughout the series, especially some nods to American locations that add depth to the storytelling.. they don't just show you action for the sake of being in an action anime, but it feels like there really is an intellectual layer behind the story so you don't feel like you're watching some generic drama.

While I could tell you a lot about the world building in the first half of the anime, as it was one of my favorite episodes, I have to admit that the second half of the story doesn't hold up to the same standard... after the intense duel that takes place, which was one of the best fight scenes I've ever seen, the story takes a slight dip.... There are too many plot points that feel forced, and the almost superhuman abilities of the protagonist begin to challenge the believability that this anime had been conveying. There is one sequence in particular that I found ridiculous related to an escape sequence, I felt like the writers were simply looking for excuses to keep Ash in constant danger.. that said, even when the plot was faltering, the dynamics between the characters still kept me hooked.
Among some of the more interesting elements of this anime is that it shares some complex themes.. it's not often you see an anime that tackles issues like drug abuse, child exploitation and trauma in such a raw and direct way.. the series doesn't shy away from showing the dark side of the disgusting society, especially in its depiction of the mafia.. this whole world is intense and at times uncomfortable to watch, but I think this is just the main idea of the work.. Banana Fish is not here to sugarcoat anything, it's an emotional rollercoaster that forces you to face the ugliest aspects of your life in a logical and intriguing way....

I would also like to highlight the supporting cast, because they are very well written.. characters like Shorter and Max add a lot of depth to the story, and their relationships with Ash help further develop their character.... I was very moved by Shorter's arc.. i think this arc has been handled in a very effective way, that left a mark on me.... Even the villains are complex in their own way, they are not just one dimensional bad guys, on the contrary, they have motivations, ambitions and weaknesses.. which makes the consequences feel much more real. Despite a few stumbles in pacing, I have to give Banana Fish a solid 8.5/10 rating.
It's ambitious, emotionally powerful, and visually entertaining, if you like crime dramas, stories with good characters, or are just looking for an anime that's a little different from the usual, I would definitely recommend giving it a chance.... In the end, this story left me with a lot to think about... it's a series that keeps haunting your mind for quite a while. Obviously, it has its flaws like any other kind of anime, but the good points specifically outweigh the lows, the series manages to convey a very good message about loss and the price of revenge... All wrapped up with a very well crafted narrative that feels super fresh.. and well, that's it for today. I hope you liked this review. See you in the next ones. Take care, bye bye. I'll leave the opening down here.

  2. Banana Fish 🍌🐟 [Eng/Esp]@seki1979d

Not trying to be xenophobic or anything but this has to be one of the best anime's I've watched this year. Simply because of the unfiltered way it portrays the bad issues of America. To be honest this isn't the anime I'm meant to be reviewing today, it's meant to be The Angel's of Death (which is dope btw), yet I've decided to rewatch that anime so as to better understand it and bring a much more satisfiable review🙂 Thus today we would be talking about...

    Banana Fish 🍌🐟

    ### Plot > Banana Fish, a potent war drug that causes insanity is on the verge of coming into gang leader Dino Galzines hands. Street Gang leader Ash Lynx gets thrown into the middle of this conspiracy with Japanese Photographer Eiji Okomura who becomes his closest ally. Together this unlikely pair works to bring the drug to light and unveil the dark secrets hidden in America.

Now this is one story in which I'll have to say this from beginning.

There are a lot of trigger warnings..🔞

..And I mean a lot. This anime cuts across numerous strong themes and it doesn't shy away from them midway nor does it try to butter it up. It gives it to the viewer exactly how it is and that is a grand beauty of it ✨

    Good Marks ✅

*** ##### - Animation The animations in this show was dope, which is to be expected as it was done by MAPPA, which is a company that has risen to came due to its godlike animation feats. Every fight scene, explosion and fast moving clip was detailed spectacularly, giving the viewer a clearly fixed and continuous image of what is ongoing on the screen ✨ *** ##### - The Themes Portrayed Now it's not everyday one would come across an anime that looks at real world issues as clear eyed as this. This show cuts across the evil themes most politicians do so as to secure their power or help in the rise to power. We see trafficking, drugs selling, murder, fornication and all other nasties... We get to see how they suffer almost no consequences and what the victims tend to suffer from their actions. It's straight up traumatizing for the viewer to be honest, but that's a win cause one way or another, the message was passed 😢. *** ##### - The Action Scenes It's a gang film with such a colourful theme list.. Of course the action scenes would be dope too. Watching Ash in action gives you the image of an American Jason Statham with hair. The fights were beautiful, diverse weapons ranging from guns to simple lead pipes were used and most times the fight scenes are mostly gang wars which were easy to draw and animate and chaotic for the viewer to watch. The one on one's on the other hands was purely a work of art. The fight styles being well thought out then mixed with Mappa's great animation gives the viewer a sense of oneness with the character in the fight. After each scene ones adrenaline would be pumping as though he just partook in said battle. *** ##### - The Odd Love Interests Now I've made it a mental rule to shy away from anything boy's love in my aime journey and I've stuck by that rule for most of my life.. > Yes folks.. I'm as straight as a ruler 📏

So imagine my shock when I saw the strange acts going on between our main characters Ash and Eiji..😑

    Lord was I mortified 😭😭

I had quite an impulse to immediately abandon the show but I was already hooked on the plot. So with great disgust towards this aspect, I finished the show.

Now there was one thing I noticed, albeit my strict no gay rule, I couldn't help but notice how touching the relationship between Ash and Eiji was. The need of someone to hold your violent impulses back was both cute and rather understanding. Not to mention it helped stabilized the story's plot too. So despite me strictly against it.. The Boys love is a good marks on the anime's record.

    Overall Review

With all good things said and *almost* no bad word uttered about the anime. I'll have to say it's an overall great anime. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good crime action with complex characters and warm touching scenes. It's a beautiful story with a moving plot that will stick in your mind long after the rolling credits.

    ESPANOL

    Señor me mortifiqué 😭😭

  3. Don't Judge the Anime By Its Title (BANANA FISH is DOPE!)@tegoshei2701d

Yesterday, I started watching an anime entitled "Banana Fish" and I finished the 24-episode anime just now. I suppose I won't be able to sleep until I write here what I feel in my heart. Before I start with my rant/post, let me show you the trailer of the said anime.

A Brief Preview Of The Anime: BANANA FISH

The anime revolves around the life of gangsters, mafia, government, media and how everything is entangled with each other. The main character named Ash is a gangster leader which was originally a puppet of a huge mafia boss. He lived a miserable and bloody life which became more chaotic because of "BANANA FISH". However, he found hope in a young Japanese guy he met who is Eiji.
In the anime, there were lots of very realistic issues which were tackled... there were a lot of controversies which revolves around various syndicate groups as well as the government. It's so serious and deep, that I found myself cursing and crying a bunch of times while watching.
If you're interested in realistic, chaotic, psychological, dark and tragic type of anime... I highly recommend this one.

    RANT TIME!!!

As I started writing this blog, my tears were still constantly falling, that I look like an idiot getting all emotional over an anime. Well, it isn't new for me... but BANANA FISH had a really great impact on me. I don't know why, but I could only guess.
    > How would you feel when at a young age, you were used by someone sexually and had no one to support you?

I was truly shocked! I had a lot of questions like, "Where was his parents?", "Why didn't they believe him?", "Why are the rich and powerful often favored?" Imagine... his own father confessed saying, "No one will believe you when you say you were raped... if it happens again, let them. But after the deed, ask them for payment."
Ugh! It's truly crazy... but in reality it happens. Sad to say, there are news of child pornography in real life. And guess what's worse? It's their parents who made them enter such world. It feels so frustrating! Why does pedophilia exist? T_T

    Gang wars everywhere!

In the anime, there were different gangs who were always on each other's throat that even innocent people get caught up in their fight. Their reason for fighting varies... some wants more power, wider territory, numerous underlings, etc. while others simply fight to survive and/or protect something they love.
It happens in real life, too. I don't know why, but I'm sure they have their reasons, too.. Although in my country, there are some gangs which exist because its cool and actually, if you ask some members, they wouldn't know why they joined themselves.

    Drugs... Drugs... and more drugs!

The drugs mentioned in the anime are very interesting, yet scary in a lot of ways. It's similar to that of an upper but the effect would somehow hypnotize the user. He can be manipulated by others and be introduced with fear. Once fear is induced, that user will lose all his mind and just focus on killing the cause of his fear. If unsuccessful, he ends up inflicting harm on himself.
This is a very crucial issue in my country. There are a lot of killings or crimes made and oftentimes, the murderer is under the influence of some drugs. Drug addiction really is demonic. The user will no longer be in his right mind, thus causing havoc.

    Government and Syndicate Connection... xD

In the anime, the syndicate groups are working hand in hand with some of the government officials. They target politicians that may be a barrier to their goals. They wanted to manipulate people and do a lot of hideous things.
Unfortunately, even this kind of things happen in real life situations. There are a lot of syndicate groups which continue to exist because they are being protected by someone in the government. It's scary.

That moment when you wanted to be saved, you found your hope, but you're causing danger to that hope.

It's really frustrating to watch, yet I continued watching. Imagine living your life in a bloody hell for as long as you could remember... then finally, you met someone who sees the real you amidst everything... someone who made you feel that you're not alone. BUT, your life, being a total nightmare, may bring harm to that person. What will you choose? Your soul's salvation? or your salvation's safety?
I sometimes ask myself, "Why won't things go my way?", "Why can't people be free and be genuinely happy with the people dear to them?", "Why is life so unfair?"
The anime really brought me a lo of massive conflicting emotions. I can empathize and clearly compare the anime with the situations in reality. It didn't end the way I wanted it to end, but I got the message. It can be an eye-opener to a lot of people, and I don't regret watching it.

    ON A SIDE NOTE:

I'm also currently watching another dark anime which is still ongoing. It's entitled, "The Promised Neverland". It may not be as realistic as Banana Fish since it's more like in a fantasy setting, but the issue tackled in the series, so far, is very relatable.
I know watching dark and psychological anime isn't good for my heart, but they allow me to think about life and a whole bunch of other things.

Serialized in Shōjo Comic from 1985 to 1994, and adapted into an anime in July 2018, the series follows Ash Lynx, a teenage gang leader in New York City

    Plot

The main story of Banana Fish consists of six parts, published across 19 volumes:

"Prologue" (volume 1) "The Mystery of Banana Fish" (volumes 1–6) "Ash's Counterattack" (volumes 7–11) "The Return of Golzine" (volumes 12–14) "The Final Battle" (volumes 15–18) "Epilogue" (volumes 18–19)

During the Vietnam War in 1973, American soldier Griffin Callenreese fires on his own squadron in a dazed frenzy. He is subdued when Max Glenreed, a friend and fellow soldier, shoots him in the legs; as Griffin collapses, he speaks the words “banana fish.” 12 years later, Griffin — now severely mentally handicapped — is cared for by his younger brother Ash, the leader of a gang of street kids in New York City. One night, Ash encounters a mortally wounded man who gives him a vial of an unknown substance and an address in California; the man utters the words “banana fish” before dying.
