  1. MOVIE REVIEW: BEFORE I WAKE@janenightshade3076d

Completed back in 2015, this unusual film was picked up by Netflix after it reportedly had distribution problems; the company is currently streaming it as a Netflix Original. Writer/director Mike Flanagan, the brains behind the excellent OUIJA: ORIGINS OF EVIL (2016), OCCULUS (2013) and ABSENTIA (2011), reportedly resisted marketing this film as a "horror movie,” although it features some plenty scary and disturbing content. The plot concerns a bereaved couple, Jessie (Kate Bosworth from SUPERMAN RETURNS - 2006) and Mark (Thomas Jane, THE MIST -- 2007), who have lost their only child, a boy named Shaun, in a bathtub drowning accident. They open their home to a foster child, a boy of a similar age named Cody (Jacob Tremblay, WONDER (2017), who has been kicked around from foster home to foster home since his single mother died when he was a preschooler. The couple soon learns that Cody has an unusual ability: he can project images from his dreams into real life. He's learned the hard way that his dreams can sometimes hurt people, so he tries to sleep as little as possible, chugging caffeinated soft drinks and munching high-sugar snacks before bedtime.

At first, Cody settles well into his new home and everyone seems happy—as long as Cody doesn’t sleep. When he finally does sleep, his dreams flood the house with the pretty butterflies that he loves—especially the bright blue ones. Soon, a moral dilemma occurs when Jessie finds that she can use Cody’s gift to temporarily resurrect her departed son by showing him photos and videos of Shaun, an action that her husband Mark vehemently opposes. Later, Cody’s dreams eventually turn into nightmares, and he summons a murderous, Slenderman-type creature he calls the "Canker Man."

From there, it would have been easy for the script to slip into the well-traveled Evil Kid horror genre, a la CASE 39 (2009) or ORPHAN (2009), but that’s not what happens. After the Canker Man begins to literally “eat people,” foster mom Jessie, played very sympathetically by Bosworth, fights back. She applies some dogged detective work to solve the riddle of the Canker Man and the blue butterflies, so that she can free Cody from their influence. The ending ties everything up very neatly. For those who like horror with a definite fantasy edge—such as Del Toro’s CRIMSON PEAK (2015)BEFORE I WAKE will be a satisfying watch. The performances are very good from Bosworth, Jane and especially Tremblay, as well as Anabeth Gish as Cody’s social worker, the pacing is great and the script is fairly intelligent. 8/10.
