I don't remember how I discovered this movie or where I started watching it, I just know that, when I finished it, I had to sit my whole family down to watch it again with me; from there, it became one of those films that I enjoy re-watching. I know it looks like a romantic comedy but, the funny thing is, it's not. Its secret to enchanting me so much is that it does have comedy, it does have romance, but that's not what it focuses on.
Back in 2014, two of my favorite actors, Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo starred in a movie together: Begin Again, directed and written by John Camey, the Oscar winner for the film ONCE and who, two years later, would direct Sing Street. It has a running time of one hour and 40 minutes, and is available on Netflix so you can go watch it after reading this post.
In Begin Again we start with the evolving relationship of Dave and Gretta, a couple of young musicians looking to make a name for themselves, at least Dave. After Dave is offered an opportunity, it doesn't take long for him to gain fame as a singer, finally being able to have his life together with Gretta. However, as things changed more and more, Gretta was pushed to the background despite being the one who wrote most of his songs and felt it was her time to leave.
Staying in the small living room of one of her friends, Gretta has to sing to survive and in one of her performances in a bar, a man, Dan, discovers her potential and offers her a chance in his record label. A journey begins between these two, who travel the city in search of inspiration, common scenarios, sounds and new musicians to create Gretta's debut album.
The chemistry between Ruffalo and Knightley left me mesmerized, it looks real and natural, as if the characters have known each other all their lives. Begin Again not only relies on the work of these two great actors, but also gives us the participation of important public figures such as James Corden, Hailee Steinfeld (who recently worked in the series Hawkeye), Adam Levine (member of the famous band Maroon 5) and Catherine Keener.
I think it's important to make it clear that Begin Again is not a love movie, even though it looks like one. It's a love film, yes, but towards music, that which moves even in the smallest way all people on this planet. Begin Again shows us how music helps these two characters to take back the lives they lost control of.
Gretta, for one, had built her life around her boyfriend Dave who, while we can understand that he was finally fulfilling his dream, left the woman who was by his side all along the way. Gretta, of course, had to start over from scratch and went from having a stable life to an uncertain path, with only her talent as a resource.
Dan's marriage also took a fall, leading him to distance himself from his daughter and lose interest in work. He went from being a great and recognized producer to an alcoholic whose opinion in his own label had already lost importance and respect, reaching the point where he was no longer given the benefit of the doubt about the new talents he was bringing in, not even with Gretta.
Begin Again teaches us that we can start over, slowly.
My favorite part is whenever they give importance to the music, as almost the whole movie is basically Gretta and Dan working and discussing together about the concept of music videos, the sound of the songs, how musicians should play their instruments. In Begin Again, as I said, the main characters, instead of falling in love with each other, fall in love again with music and their own lives.
You can tell a lot about a person by what's on their playlist.
I know you can. That's what's worrying me.
Of course, the soundtrack had to be up to the task to, really, inspire us and make us believe that this whole concept of the street, of the mundane, is new. The main theme of the film is called ''Lost Stars'' and, if you listen to it, I think it will be quite a while before you put it aside, it wasn't for nothing that it was nominated for ''Best Original Song'' at the 2015 Academy Awards.
These kinds of melodies and lyrics are what fill this film and make it extremely enjoyable and bearable. I'm tempted to post the other songs from Begin Again here, but it would only ruin the experience of listening to them for the first time during the movie for you.
No recuerdo cómo es que descubrí esta película ni en dónde la comencé a ver, solo sé que , cuando la terminé, tuve que sentar a toda mi familia a verla de nuevo conmigo; desde ahí, se convirtió en esas películas que disfruto repitiendo. Sé que parece una comedia romántica pero, lo curioso, es que no lo es. Su secreto para encantarme tanto es que sí tiene comedia, sí tiene romance, pero no es eso en lo que se enfoca.
Por allá en el 2014, dos de mis actores favoritos, Keira Knightley y Mark Ruffalo protagonizaron una película juntos: Begin Again, dirigida y escrita por John Camey, el ganador de Oscar por la película ONCE y que, dos años después, dirigiría Sing Street. Tiene una duración de una hora y 40 minutos, y se encuentra disponible en Netflix para que puedan ir a verla después de leer este post.
En Begin Again comenzamos con la evolución en la relación de Dave y Gretta, una pareja de músicos jóvenes que buscan darse a conocer, al menos, Dave. Despues de que a este le ofrecen una oportunidad, no tarda mucho en ir ganando fama como cantante, siendo capaz finalmente de tener su vida acomodada junto con Gretta. A medida que las cosas fueron cambiando más, Gretta fue desplazada a segundo plano a pesar de ser la que componía la mayoría de sus canciones y sintió que era su momento de irse.
Quedándose en la pequeña sala de uno de sus amigos, Gretta tiene que cantar para sobrevivir y en una de sus presentaciones en un bar, un hombre, Dan, descubre su potencial y le ofrece una oportunidad en su disquera. Allí inicia el viaje entre estos dos, quienes recorren la ciudad en busca de inspiración, escenarios comunes, sonidos y músicos nuevos para crear el álbum debut de Gretta.
La química entre Ruffalo y Knightley me dejó hipnotizada, se ve real y natural, como si los personajes se conociesen de toda la vida. Begin Again no solo se basa en el trabajo de estos dos grandes actores, sino que nos regala la participación de importantes figuras públicas como, por ejemplo, James Corden, Hailee Steinfeld (recientemente trabajó en la serie Hawkeye), Adam Levine (integrante de la famosa banda Maroon 5) y Catherine Keener.
Me parece importante dejar en claro que Begin Again no es una película de amor, aunque parezca una. Es una película de amor, sí, pero hacia la música, aquello que mueve incluso en la manera más mínima a todas las personas en este planeta. Begin Again nos muestra cómo la música ayuda a estos dos personajes a retomar las vidas de las que perdieron control.
Gretta, por un lado, había construido su vida en base a su novio Dave que, aunque podamos entender que por fin estaba cumpliendo su sueño, dejó a la mujer que estuvo a su lado en todo el camino. Gretta, por supuesto, tuvo que volver a empezar de cero y pasó de tener una vida estable a un camino incierto, con solo su talento como recurso.
El matrimonio de Dan también sufrió una caída, que lo llevó a distanciarse de su hija y perder el interés en el trabajo. Pasó de ser un gran y reconocido productor a un alcohólico cuya opinión en su propia disquera ya había perdido importancia y respeto, llegando a tal punto donde ya no se le otorgaba el beneficio de la duda sobre los nuevos talentos que traía, ni siquiera con Gretta.
Begin Again nos enseña que podemos empezar de nuevo, a paso lento.
Mi parte favorita es cada vez que le dan importancia a la música, pues casi toda la película es básicamente Gretta y Dan trabajando y discutiendo juntos sobre el concepto de los videos musicales, el sonido de las canciones, cómo los músicos deberían tocar sus instrumentos. En Begin Again, como ya he dicho, los protagonistas, en vez de enamorarse entre ellos, se enamoran de nuevo de la música y de sus propias vidas.
Se puede saber mucho de una persona por lo que hay en su lista de reproducción.
Sé que se puede. Eso es lo que me preocupa.
Por supuesto, el soundtrack tenía que estar a la altura para, de verdad, inspirarnos y hacernos creer que todo este concepto de la calle, de lo mundano, es nuevo. El tema principal de la película se llama ‘’Lost Stars’’ y, si la escuchas, creo que pasará un buen tiempo hasta que la dejes a un lado, no fue por nada que fue nominada a ‘’Mejor Canción Original’’ en los Academy Awards 2015.
Este tipo de melodías y letras son las que llenan a esta película y hacen de ella algo sumamente agradable y llevadero. Tengo la tentación de poner acá las demás canciones de Begin Again, pero solo les arruinaría la experiencia de escucharlas por primera vez durante la película.

Undoubtedly, music is one of the wonders of life, it can cheer us up, at the same time be our companion in sad and turbulent moments, it can make us get excited, clear us of everything, motivate us, make us dance, but besides all that, can a song save your life?
Sin duda alguna la música es una de las maravillas de la vida, puede alegrarnos, a la vez ser nuestra acompañante en momentos tristes y turbios, puede hacer que nos emocionemos, despejarnos de todo, motivarnos, hacernos bailar, pero además de todo eso, ¿Puede una canción salvar tu vida?
A film written and directed by the man himself; John Carney. It focuses on the life of a music producer who is somewhat discouraged with life. Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a music producer whose career has been in decline for some time in his industry, is fired by his own partner and decides to look for a new band with musicians who can live up to his vision. Divorced, a father and irresponsible family man, Dan makes the decision to start from scratch in every way and it is not until he meets Gretta (Keira Knightley) with a musical spirit that the same feeling for music is awakened and more acute than before.
Una película escrita y dirigida por el mismo hombre; John Carney. La cual se enfoca en la vida de un productor de música algo desanimado de la vida. Dan (Mark Ruffalo), un productor de música que cuya carrera viene en declive desde hace un tiempo en su industria, es despedido por su propio socio y decide buscar una nueva banda con músicos que si estén a la altura de su visión. Divorciado, padre e irresponsable hombre de familia; Dan toma la decisión de comenzar desde cero en todos los sentidos y no es sino hasta que encuentra a Gretta (Keira Knightley) con un espíritu musical que hace despertar el mismo sentimiento por la música y más agudizado que antes.
In the film we see not only Dan's life, but also Gretta's life and how they came to know each other, perhaps fate brought them together. Gretta was the gentle girlfriend of Dave, (Adam Levine) a musician who was about to rise to the top with the songs they did together and were the ones that propelled Dave's rise to fame as a singer. They seemed to be the perfect musical couple. However, an affair between Dave and an assistant caused their relationship to break down, leaving Gretta devastated.
En la película vemos la vida no solo de Dan, sino también la vida de Gretta y de cómo llegaron a conocerse, tal vez el destino los unió. Gretta era la gentil novia de Dave, (Adam Levine) un músico que estaba a punto de subir a la cima con las canciones que hicieron juntos y fueron las que impulsaron el ascenso a la fama de Dave como cantante. Parecían ser la pareja de músicos perfecta, Sin embargo, un amorío entre Dave y una asistente hizo que su relación se quebrara, dejando a Gretta devastada.
Gretta's best friend (James Corden) lived in the city where she followed her ex to so he gave her lodging until she could return home, in the meantime he took her to a bar where he was playing and encouraged her to sing; Dan was listening and that's where they met.
It all started with a song, which took Gretta and Dan's career in a new direction. They both had very similar thoughts about music and the essence it was losing after the modifications the industry was making to it to commercialize it more. Together they brought together musicians from different places and formed the band they longed for.
El mejor amigo de Gretta (James Corden) vivía en la ciudad a la cual ella siguió a su ex así que le dio hospedaje hasta que pudiera volver a casa, mientras tanto la llevó a un bar donde él tocaba y la motivó a cantar; Dan estaba escuchando y fue allí donde se conocieron.
Todo empezó con una canción, la cual hizo que la carrera de Gretta y Dan tomara un nuevo rumbo. Ambos tenían pensamientos muy similares acerca de la música y de la esencia que perdía tras las modificaciones que la industria le hacía para comercializarla más. Juntos agruparon a músicos de diferentes lugares y formaron la banda que tanto anhelaban.
Dan begins to look for ways to produce an album with Gretta and the new band, although in his situation he does it in a very different way than usual. His long career has left him with some good things, influence on other artists, supportive friendships and admirable creativity.
Musicians, platonic love, breakups, tears, and endless difficulties are just some of the things that make up a dramatic and romantic plot.
Dan comienza a buscar las manera de producir un disco con Gretta y la nueva banda, aunque en su situación lo hace de una manera muy diferente a lo normal. Su larga trayectoria le dejó algunas cosas favorables, influencia en otros artistas, amistades que le brindan su apoyo y una creatividad admirable.
Músicos, amores platónicos, rupturas, lágrimas, y un sinfín de dificultades son solo algunas de las cosas que forman a una trama dramática y romántica.
John Carney shows us through this film that we should never give up on something we are passionate about. He made this story behind the lives of many music stars that many would not tell. He showed us that despite feeling broken, Dan the main character was able to achieve his goal by setting his sights and trusting in his dreams. It showed us that Gretta, despite feeling betrayed and humiliated by the person she loved the most, was able to pick herself up again by building her dreams, helping others to follow theirs as well.
John Carney nos muestra por medio de esta película que no hay que rendirnos nunca con algo que nos apasiona. Realizó esta historia detrás de la vida de muchas estrellas de la música y que muchos no contarían. Nos mostró que a pesar de sentirse destrozado, Dan el personaje principal pudo lograr su objetivo al haberse trazado la meta y confiar en sus sueños. Nos enseñó que Gretta a pesar de haberse sentido traicionada y humillada por la persona que más amaba pudo volver a levantarse el ánimo construyendo sus sueños, ayudando a otros a seguir los suyos también.
