My list of pending films is full of very different works. On the one hand there are the premieres of the last few months that I haven't been able to see; there are also the all-time classics that I have yet to see; films from all over the world that I discover on Instagram or MUBI, lesser-known works by directors I admire, any stories that I've had on my list for a long time, recommendations from friends and those gems that I have already seen, but that from time to time I want to enjoy again. As you can understand, it's hard for me to choose something to watch and often my weekly lineup looks quite heterogeneous.

Mi lista de películas pendientes está llena de obras muy diferentes entre sí. Por un lado están los estrenos de los últimos meses que no he podido ver; están también los clásicos de todos los tiempos que tengo pendientes de ver; películas de todas partes del mundo que descubro en Instagram o en MUBI, obras menos conocidas de directores que admiro, historias cualesquiera que tengo en lista hace muchísimo tiempo, recomendaciones de amigos y esas joyas que ya he visto, pero que de vez en cuando quiero volver a disfrutar. Como comprenderán, se me hace difícil elegir algo para ver y muchas veces mi cartelera semanal se ve bastante heterogénea.

Hence my recent visits to the big screen have been so motley: two animated cyberpunk classics (Akira and Ghost in the Shell), a Luis Buñuel film, two short fiction films (one French and one Polish), a musical romance and the latest a 2011 romantic comedy written and directed by Mike Mills and starring Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Mélanie Laurent. Beginners centers on the story of Oliver (McGregor) a man in his late forties who has just lost his father Hal (Plummer), four years after the death of his mother. It's a difficult time for Oliver, already prone to isolation, sadness and loneliness. Organizing his father's house, taking care of Arthur, his father's Jack Russell, but above all going over and over again the memories of his childhood and his moments with Hal plunge him into a state of self-absorption and loneliness. Until one night, at a party he barely attends, he meets the unpredictable and irreverent Anna (Laurent). The way they meet and become close to each other strikes me as one of the sweetest and most romantic ways I've ever seen in film without it necessarily being unrealistic. I think what happened to them is something that can happen in reality and it's not an exaggerated or overdone first contact, but it has its plus and minus points, turning the scene into a display of honesty that disarms the viewer thanks to how sincere Oliver and Anna are and that perfect mix between humor, romance and sweetness that is so appealing.

De allí que mis últimas visitas a la gran pantalla hayan sido tan variopintas: dos clásicos del ciberpunk animado (Akira y Ghost in the Shell), una película de Luis Buñuel, dos cortometrajes de ficción (uno francés y otro polaco), un romance musical y lo último una comedia romántica de 2011 escrita y dirigida por Mike Mills y protagonizada por Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer y Mélanie Laurent. Beginners se centra en la historia de Oliver (McGregor) un hombre de casi cuarenta años que acaba de perder a su padre Hal (Plummer), cuatro años después de la muerte de su madre. Es una época difícil para Oliver, de por sí ya con cierta tendencia al aislamiento, la tristeza y la soledad. Organizar la casa de su padre, cuidar a Arthur, el Jack Russell que era de su padre, pero sobre todo repasar una y otra vez los recuerdos de su infancia y de sus momentos con Hal lo sumen en un estado de ensimismamiento y soledad. Hasta que una noche, en una fiesta a la que casi no acude, conoce a la impredecible e irreverente Anna (Laurent). La forma en que se conocen y se acercan me parece una de las maneras más dulces y románticas que he visto en el cine sin que sea necesariamente irreal. Creo que lo que les pasó a ellos es algo que puede pasar en la realidad y no es un primer contacto exagerado o demasiado elaborado, sino que tiene sus puntos a favor y sus puntos en contra, convirtiendo la escena en un despliegue de honestidad que desarma al espectador gracias a lo sinceros que se muestran Oliver y Anna y a esa mezcla perfecta entre humor, romance y dulzura que resulta tan atrayente.

As they begin to spend time together and get to know each other better, our protagonists realize that they are more similar to each other than they should be, because yes, on the one hand they can understand each other a little better, but on the other hand that similarity can represent an obstacle since they are both lonely individuals who have sought that solitude - sometimes unconsciously - and who have managed to push away from their lives those who had decided to accompany them in the past, how can we expect things to be different now? Knowing your equal can sometimes backfire.

Conforme comienzan a pasar tiempo juntos y a conocerse mejor, nuestros protagonistas se van dando cuenta de que son más parecidos entre sí de lo que les convendría, porque sí, por un lado pueden entenderse un poco mejor, pero por el otro esa semejanza puede representar un obstáculo ya que ambos son individuos solitarios que han buscado esa soledad - a veces de manera inconsciente - y que se las han arreglado para alejar de su vida a quienes habían decidido acompañarles en el pasado, ¿cómo esperar que ahora las cosas sean distintas? Conocer a tu igual a veces puede resultar contraproducente.

I really enjoyed the evolution of the relationship between Oliver and Anna, the way they slowly begin to fall in love and discover lovely details in each other, but they also begin to feel doubts, fears and that inner voice that has sabotaged their previous relationships arise inside them. In their own way, each feels they don't deserve the other and will eventually end up pushing the other away because that's what they've always done. I also enjoyed the interventions of Oliver's voice-over that shows us how he's falling in love with Anna, but also evokes the past, his parents' relationship and especially the most recent memories with his father, whose life in recent years is also full of lessons, because after losing his wife of forty years, with more than seventy years of age, Hal finally decided to come out of the closet and live his homosexuality with openness and honesty (Oliver's father is inspired by the real story of the director's father). Confused at first, sympathetic later and finally proud of his bravery, somehow Oliver searches his memory for the lessons his father left him through example to instill courage and not let go of Anna, despite his fears and tendency to loneliness. All this adds up to Anna's relationship with her own father, how complex it can be to love someone very similar to you, the weight of the past, the memories, the pain, the secrets and the fear of opening up to another, the vulnerability exposed by those who let someone into the darkest part of their soul.

Disfruté mucho la evolución de la relación entre Oliver y Anna, la forma en que poco a poco comienzan a enamorarse y a descubrir detalles encantadores en el otro, pero también comienzan a sentir cómo surgen en su interior las dudas, los miedos y esa voz interior que les ha saboteado sus relaciones anteriores. A su manera, cada uno siente que no merece al otro y que eventualmente acabarán alejándolo porque es lo que siempre han hecho. Disfruté también las intervenciones de la voz en off de Oliver que nos va mostrando cómo se va enamorando de Anna, pero también evoca el pasado, la relación de sus padres y sobre todo los recuerdos más recientes con su padre, cuya vida en los últimos años también está llena de lecciones, pues después de haber perdido a su esposa de cuarenta años, con más de setenta años de edad, Hal decidió finalmente salir del closet y vivir su homosexualidad con apertura y honestidad (el padre de Oliver está inspirado en la historia real del padre del director). Confundido al principio, comprensivo luego y finalmente orgulloso de su valentía, de alguna forma Oliver busca en su memoria las enseñanzas que su padre le dejó a través del ejemplo para infundirse valor y no dejar ir a Anna, a pesar de sus temores y su tendencia a la soledad. Todo esto se suma con la relación de Anna con su propio padre, lo complejo que puede ser amar a alguien muy similar a ti, el peso del pasado, de los recuerdos, del dolor, los secretos y el miedo que da abrirse con otro, la vulnerabilidad que expone quien deja a alguien entrar a lo más oscuro de su alma.

Beginners is not the most romantic love story I've ever seen, but it's one of my favorites, for its mixture of humor and romance, of serenity and depth, and especially for its honesty and verisimilitude. There are no exaggerated gestures of other stories in the film and although they are two adults (he's 38, she's 32) in a way I found them very tender, sweet, almost teenagers, but without the impetus and violence of youth, a mixture that - to be so enjoyable to watch - needed the talent of this director, these actors and a script as well written as this one.

Beginners no es la historia de amor más romántica que he visto en mi vida, pero sí es una de mis favoritas, por esa mezcla de humor y romance, de serenidad y profundidad y en especial por su honestidad y verosimilitud. No hay en la película esos gestos exagerados de otras historias y aunque son dos personas adultas (él tiene 38, ella 32) de cierta forma me parecieron muy tiernos, dulces, casi adolescentes, pero sin el ímpetu ni la violencia propia de la juventud, una mezcla que - para que resultara tan agradable de ver - necesitaba del talento de este director, estos actores y de un guion tan bien escrito como este.

Mélanie Laurent

Mike Mills doesn't have a very extensive filmography, but he's responsible for having also directed and written 20th Century Women and C'mon C'mon, reason enough to recognize his talent. Christopher Plummer needs no introduction, but something curious about this role is that it earned him not only his only Oscar (he became the oldest winner, at 81, of Best Supporting Actor) but also the SAG, BAFTA and Golden Globe. Then we have Mélanie Laurent, the remembered Shosanna from Inglorius Basterds, but who has also appeared as an actress in Now You See Me, Enemy and a host of other stories and who has also directed films like Gaveslton and Respire and is currently working - as director - on the big screen adaptation of Kristin Hannah's celebrated novel The Nightingale, which will feature the Fanning sisters, Elle and Dakota. And they are joined by Ewan McGregor, none other than Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has an extensive and varied filmography and who in addition to his dramatic roles in Angels & Demons, Trainspotting and Dr. Sleep he's starred in many romantic stories such as Moulin' Rouge with Nicole Kidman, Down With Love with Renée Zellweger, Perfect Sense with Eva Green or the beautiful Salmon Fishing in the Yemen with Emily Blunt and one of my all-time favorite films: Big Fish. With this sum of talent nothing could go wrong, so I recommend Beginners to movie lovers, lovers of romantic, thoughtful films and those who believe that love can knock on your door at any age, how many of you have seen it? Mike Mills no tiene una filmografía muy extensa, pero es el responsable de haber dirigido y escrito también 20th Century Women y C'mon C'mon, razón suficiente para reconocer su talento. Christopher Plummer no necesita presentación, pero algo curioso de este papel es que le valió no sólo su único Oscar (se convirtió en el ganador de mayor edad, con 81 años, de Mejor Actor de Reparto) sino también el SAG, el BAFTA y el Golden Globe. Luego tenemos a Mélanie Laurent, la recordada Shosanna de Inglorius Basterds, pero que también ha figurado como actriz en Now You See Me, Enemy y otro montón de historias y que además ha dirigido películas como Gaveslton y Respire y que actualmente se encuentra trabajando - como directora - en la adaptación a la gran pantalla de la célebre novela The Nightingale de Kristin Hannah, en donde participarán las hermanas Fanning, Elle y Dakota.
