  1. Better Man - The intimate and metaphorical biopic that breaks the mold@danielcarrerag434d

I finally got around to watching the biographical movie about Robbie Williams. It premiered at the end of last year, but it's definitely worth seeing. I really did because I came across several opinions that realistically speak very highly of the film. I say realistically because everyone agrees that artist biographies are always the same: an ennobling vision of the artist's life, something that always deviates from reality.

Better Man - La biopic íntima y metafórica que rompe esquemas

The question everyone asks at the beginning of the movie is, why is the protagonist a monkey? It's a metaphor for his life. He was never a musical prodigy; he's a showman. His greatest talent is knowing how to entertain. I think that's why he sees himself represented as a monkey. Furthermore, under this figure, his struggle against his inner demons, which he saw represented in versions of his past, is better portrayed, providing memorable scenes that didn't happen in real life but are a metaphor for his fight to move away from everything that was harmful in his life.

I loved that the movie didn't focus, like other biographies, on memorable moments in the artist's career. For example, it doesn't depict how he composed 'Rock DJ,' a song I listened to the most by Robbie back in the 2000s when MTV played the music video. Rather, the song was used in a musical scene of a moment of jubilation. Another example is the song 'Feel,' which was used for the scene of Robbie as a child wanting to connect with his father.

Another interesting point of the movie is the artist's struggle with imposter syndrome. I confess it's a new concept for me, but seeing it represented in Robbie's life made it much clearer, and I understood that fame and achievements are not always enough to feel satisfied with achieved goals. In the case of this movie, Robbie tells us that he always needed validation from others to feel like he was someone. That's why he's so good at entertaining others; it was necessary for him to know how to attract attention.

I dare to recommend the movie. I loved the scenes with the grandmother; they're the best. But I must clarify that it should be watched with discretion because it addresses sensitive issues. It's not a family movie, but it's a good story of personal overcoming, how someone hits rock bottom and manages to get out of the abyss, someone who is not afraid to share what the darkest stages of his life were like and how he managed to move forward and be who he is today.

  2. Better Man | Review [ENG-ESP]@davidpena21438d

Over the years there have been a lot of musicians who are very well recognized in the world and they have had to fight for their name to be very well recognized and thanks to this there have been many films about these artists. For last year a director managed to recreate a version of the story of the great artist Robbie Williams, which surely many of you will know of this great singer for each of the things he has achieved, therefore it will be a production full of very good distillates and aspects that perhaps no one knew about him and in my case I allow myself to learn how fame can last days or years and that will depend on the person.

    image.png Source

The story is presented in a different way and is something that brings a lot of value and at the same time unique, where it will be the most exciting minutes and see that great journey from the beginning, each of those beginnings in the music industry for that year, how he managed to get a very good reputation that leads him to be very big, which is the most expected by all artists who are coming new today, where the most important thing will be to enjoy the whole process. To be able to recreate this film serves us to learn from that artist and this time it will be a monkey who will carry the name of the artist and thus be able to develop everything where it leads us to ask ourselves a monkey in the film, how much money did this singer make, and many other things to see a monkey in the film. And many other things when we see a monkey alive.

Everything develops in a great way and manages to cover very well the details of his whole life and it is really a sad reality, everything he has to go through to achieve something and to be able to become a hard life, of obstacles and especially for the aptitude of this singer. It was a big surprise, since this singer is very well known for his music and it is not my style, however, at some point I surely heard something and he will not know how to recognize it, besides having to lead that life of both personalities as an artist and a normal person, takes him to a point where everything is a disaster and the only thing left to do is to take a breath to move forward.

Everything is very well developed, the plot and each of the elements so that it would seem as real as possible of that life, also gave him a perfect touch also achieve to present us a little of what were each of his concerts and with his talent this singer easily manages to sell everything and that each of his presentations were full of many people. In addition, we can not leave out each of the support he received so he could trust himself and reach the top in the best way possible, where both in the film and in real life you have to know who to trust so that everything goes well and that's why placing that monkey is one of the most incredible things.

    image.png Source

It was a movie that managed to cover very well the whole life of this great singer and things that one is left speechless by the very fact of having to risk to win and that is why this singer managed to conquer many for his great style of music and even though for his time he had many good rivals he never stopped until he achieved his dream and to see him succeed in everything that happened is to be admired. So friends if you want to spend a great moment of laughter and learning, let us pass this installment and see how a monkey sings and speaks as if he were a human being.

  3. Better Man is a biopic... But works.@richardalexis468d

All the screenshots in this post were taken directly from the movie by me.

Better Man is one of those films that's hard to disagree with when someone says something positive about it, and this was something that honestly surprised me considering not only was I not very familiar with Robbie Williams, but I'm generally very jaded about the concept of biopics, a format that has been overused in recent years with varying levels of quality as a result.

    1000148811.jpg Source

Starting with the unusual creative decision to depict Robbie in a CGI monkey (something that makes perfect sense when we see the film), as well as the recurring use of his brilliant themes throughout the promotional material, it was almost impossible to ignore a project like this. And while I don't deny that it still falls into the typical biopic cliches, I feel there are many positive aspects beyond this that make it worthy of a chance.

    1000148823.jpg

    1000148822.jpg

Directed by Michael Gracey, Better Man is a film about one of the most significant English singers in history: Robbie Williams, an irreverent and charismatic character.

In Better Man, we see his rise to stardom, and all the good and bad things he encountered along the way: ambition, drugs, a bitter relationship with his father, and the constant struggle with the ghosts of his past.

Beyond this, what makes the film such an enjoyable experience is its ability to show the more questionable aspects of Robbie's personality without having to sugarcoat them (a recurring problem with biopics), finding a perfect balance between the detestable and the empathy that comes from watching him suffer.

The use of a chimpanzee to narrate the events serves several purposes: it infuses the film with a rather enjoyable touch of surrealism, makes it easier for us to feel sorry for him when we see him commit certain atrocious acts, and gives the film a certain universality where we can enjoy what we see on screen even if we're not familiar with the person.

    1000148825.jpg

    1000148826.jpg

    1000148824.jpg

As I mentioned earlier, Better Man doesn't escape the typical tropes of the genre; it's predictable in nature and molds reality to generate a stronger emotional impact. However, it's visually interesting and has a rawness that's uncommon in modern cinema, making it unfortunate that it didn't achieve the expected results at the box office worldwide.

  4. Better Man (2024): the pain behind the cockyness | el dolor detrás de la arrogancia@cristiancaicedo499d

Nominated for the Academy Awards | Nominada a los premios de la Academia

Until a month or so ago, I didn't know they had made this movie. When I saw the poster, something seemed familiar, but at the time I couldn't put my finger on what. Then, when I saw the trailer I felt embarrassed for not having realized that the main poster of this film is the recreation of the cover of the album A life thru a lens, the solo debut of British singer Robbie Williams, an artist whose music I really like and an album that I had and listened to many times at home.

And Better Man is a musical biopic that tells the story of Robbie Williams from his childhood to one of the peak moments of his career, going through a lot of ups and downs. The curious thing is that Williams is portrayed as a chimpanzee thanks to CGI. It's not that all people are chimpanzees, as in a Planet of the Apes satire, it's that the only character in the entire film who looks like that is Williams himself. According to the singer's statements, this decision was made because he always felt "less evolved than other people", which, thanks to the script by Oliver Cole, Simon Gleeson and Michael Gracey (who also directs the film) doesn't end up being a simple satire, but a deep reflection on self-perception, depression, vices and many other internal demons that Robbie Williams fought against throughout his life. Right off the bat one might think that the decision to have been represented as a chimpanzee would alienate potential viewers by believing that it wasn't a serious film, but the emotional charge of the story is such that one soon gets used to it and even forgets that this monkey is not a person. Williams played himself in his adult years and Jonno Davies played him in his youth, both using motion capture technology and CGI, but the voice-over heard throughout the entire film is that of the singer telling us his story and the moments that defined not only his past and his future, but also his personality.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película

A charismatic father, with a vocation as an artist and an adoration for Sinatra, but also a father absent for a long time; a loving mother; a grandmother who always loved her grandson Robert; the 1970s and 1980s in Stoke-on-Trent, England; a difficult childhood for a boy who didn't seem to fit in; but above all the adoration that little Rob felt for music and his irrepressible desire to be famous, to make his life around music... that is what his childhood was made of: the possibility of one day becoming a star like those that he loved to watch on television and imitate in the living room of his house.

Then came the teenage years and his break, when he became the youngest member of the pop group Take That at just fifteen years of age. I knew that, I knew some of the group's songs (Back For Good is my favorite) and I knew that Robbie was something like the Bad Boy of the group, in the vein of AJ from the Backstreet Boys (cheers to all the millenials reading me), but I didn't know that Robbie wasn't allowed to contribute any of the songs he had written, nor that there were hard feelings towards him for his alcoholism and his use of other substances, nor that he had been kicked out of the group. Nor did I know that he had been partnered with Nicole Appleton, a member of All Saints (a Spice Girls style girl group) nor that he had struggled so hard to get his solo career off the ground. Seeing all that, the struggles - mostly internal - that he had to fight against demons, vices, insecurities and ghosts that tormented him, even when he was on stage made me gain even more respect for Williams and become even more fond of certain songs of his after having known the story behind some of the verses. It's true that the humor in the film is quite biting and that - very much in his style - Robbie allows himself to narrate certain episodes with arrogance, sarcasm and without caring much about the opinion of others; but that's just the way he is. Although it seems that part of that personality is a product, I think the film shows well the real contradiction that this irreverence, arrogance and spontaneity are as characteristic traits of his person as his insecurities, traumas, fears and inferiority complex.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película

This being the biopic of a singer, it was obvious that they were not going to waste the opportunity to include dance scenes - which there are, as in every musical - and several of Williams' most recognized songs, which were also perfectly arranged in the script as part of the narrative, not respecting their artistic chronology, but rather the meaning of the song as a complement to the staged experience. Something Beautiful, Rock DJ, Come Undone, She's the One (this scene is very romantic and emotional) and of course Angels and Better Man are part of a soundtrack in which these and other pop star songs were covered and updated for the film.

If you know who Robbie Williams is and know some of his music, don't hesitate to go see this movie. And if you don't know who he is, here are some facts to convince you to go to the movies to see it: Williams holds the Guinness World Record for most tickets sold in a single day. For his 2006 world tour he sold 1.6 million tickets in 24 hours; he also holds the record of having filled the mythical Knebworth for three consecutive days, singing for an estimated 375,000 people; and last month he managed to position Better Man (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) as the number 1 album in the UK, achieving this for the 15th time. That is to say, Williams has been at the top of that list with 15 different albums, something that in that country has only been achieved by another band you may know: The Beatles. If these reasons are not enough, you doubt whether to go see it or not, or perhaps you are not convinced by the CGI chimpanzee, let me tell you that Better Man is an emotional, funny, irreverent film, which touches on issues such as loneliness, fatherhood, trauma, depression, suicide, but also happiness, the illusion of following one's own path and overcoming obstacles and does it in an entertaining way, with a sense of humor and with a repertoire of wonderful and emotional songs. I liked the movie, because I knew Williams' music, his irreverence and I also loved that the film was named after my favorite song of his entire discography, have any of you gone to see Better Man? I'll read you in the comments.
