It has been nearly 30 years since the global phenomenon that forever changed the concept of television. "Beatriz Aurora Pinzón Solano"—better known as Betty, la fea—is one of those characters who stays with you, thanks to both the performance and the controversial story itself. To this day, the show remains a massive hit and is predicted to endure through the ages, given its continued popularity and status as one of the most profitable series of all time. However, I am not here to talk about the original, but rather the latest series, which brings these iconic characters back to television.
Han pasado casi 30 años desde aquel fenómeno mundial que cambió para siempre todo el concepto que había en la televisión. “Beatriz Aurora Pinzón Solano”, mejor conocida como Betty, La Fea, es de esos personajes que se te quedan en la mente, bien por su interpretación como por la controvertida historia que sigue en sí. Al sol de hoy, esta novela sigue y se predice que seguirá siendo una gran sensación a través de los tiempos, por su actual recepción que aún se mantiene, siendo una de las series más rentables de todos los tiempos. Pero realmente no vengo a hablar de ella, sino de su más actual serie, que trae a los icónicos personajes de regreso a la TV.
It is important to note that when the original telenovela concluded, the network faced demands to bring back the characters who had captivated millions. While a sequel was produced featuring nearly the entire original cast—and managed to retain the show's signature essence—it was not considered canon within the story I am about to share. In this version, the characters return twenty years after the events of the original series, facing conflicts that sparked even greater controversy among the fanbase. Betty and Armando are no longer the perfect couple they were at the end of the original show; instead, they are grappling with serious issues that make a reconciliation seem unlikely—or at least, not anytime soon.
Es importante tomar en cuenta que, cuando esta novela llegó a su final, se le exigió a la televisora traer de regreso a aquellos personajes que emocionaron a millones. Trayendo de regreso a casi todos los integrantes en una secuela que, si bien mantuvo la esencia que caracterizó a la novela, no fue considerada como canon para ser parte de esta que te quiero contar. Aquí, regresan los personajes 20 años después de lo conocido en su novela original; aquí vemos conflictos que generaron aún más conflicto con los fans de la novela. Betty y Armando ya no son aquella pareja perfecta que dejó la novela; en cambio, tienen muchos problemas que parecen que no se van a juntar de nuevo, o por lo menos, no en poco tiempo.
They made the main character “ugly” again, which sparked the initial criticism; after all, the “beautiful Betty” persona was built up over more than 300 episodes, so reverting her—as if that transformation held no value—offended many people, myself included. However, there are details that keep me from hating it at all; for instance, the masterful evolution of Marcela Valencia’s character is what is really holding this new series together. It currently spans three seasons, and it is worth noting that the first two were the most chaotic due to the presence of certain characters—characters who were removed without much explanation in the third season, which also saw the return of many who had been missing.
Al personaje principal la volvieron “fea” otra vez y esto llevó las primeras críticas que tuvo, pues Betty bonita es un personaje que se construyó en más de 300 episodios, por lo que regresarla como si eso no tuviera ningún valor alguno ofendió a muchos, incluyéndome. Sin embargo, hay detalles que me hacen no odiarla para nada; como una evolución magistral al personaje de Marcela Valencia, es lo que está sosteniendo esta nueva serie. Actualmente cuenta con 3 temporadas, y es importante mencionar que las primeras dos fueron las más caóticas por la presencia de ciertos personajes, que en la tercera temporada fueron removidos sin mayores explicaciones y trayendo de regreso a muchos de los que faltaban.
It is no secret that Betty la Fea is a controversial show, primarily due to its chauvinism and the cruelty—disguised as comedy—that the character endured because of her appearance. Your experience depends on your perspective; since this series provides a wonderful summary of the original, watching the first show isn't strictly necessary—though doing so is certainly an experience you would enjoy. While Betty marked a turning point in television history, this new series doesn't really feel like an attempt to carry on that legacy; instead, it seems driven by a desire to modernize the story—a choice that ultimately misfires.
No es secreto que Betty la Fea es una novela polémica, principalmente por lo machista que es, siguiéndola la crueldad disfrazada de comedia por la que pasaba el personaje por su apariencia. Depende de los ojos con los que lo veas; tendrás una experiencia distinta, pues para que no sea necesario ver la primera novela, esta te da un maravilloso resumen sobre ella, pero obviamente ver la primera novela siempre será una experiencia, una que disfrutarás. A pesar de que Betty marcó un antes y un después en la TV, esta nueva serie realmente no se siente como si hubiesen querido seguir un legado que esta tiene, sino que la quisieron modernizar, otro punto que va de error.
While the pacing might not be to everyone's taste, I personally watch it for a dose of a modern-day Betty and to hold onto the nostalgia evoked by this beloved franchise. Netflix previously held the rights to Yo soy Betty, la fea; during its run on that platform, the show was a massive hit, staying in the top 10 for months before eventually leaving—at which point Prime Video wasted no time in acquiring the rights. Unlike Netflix, Amazon greenlit the sequel series that is currently airing. Despite claims that it has ruined the franchise, the numbers don't lie; it has received such a strong reception that production is still ongoing. Si bien esta no lleva un ritmo 100% aceptado, pues yo por mi parte la veo para llevarme una dosis de una Betty moderna y para conservar la nostalgia que me causa esta franquicia tan querida por todos. Anteriormente, Netflix llevó las riendas de Yo soy Betty, la fea, y en su estadía por la dichosa plataforma fue un éxito total que la mantuvo en el top 10 por meses, hasta que un día dijo adiós y Prime Video no dudó en obtener sus derechos. A diferencia de Netflix, Amazon dio luz verde a la secuela que actualmente se mantiene en transmisión. Por más que digan que esta ha arruinado la franquicia, los números no fallan y realmente ha tenido un recibimiento muy grande que aún la mantiene en producción.
