  1. Cinetv Contest: Unpacking The Music And Drama In "Castaway Diva"@merit.ahama532d

When I think of musical movie, my mind tend to go back in time to my childhood days to the times I was literally obsessed with music movies and cartoons, I would repeatedly watch them and could sing all the songs in every scene. Those days were a joy to me because I've always been a lover of music. I could actually say, musical movies are my favourite go-to for entertainment.

But considering the fact that I'm not the only lover of musical movies, and that I've seen really good reviews about the movies I had in mind for this contest, I'm choosing a more recent musical series that have got me hooked on all the songs since I saw it last two year. I've seen a few other musical series but this one tops my 2023 list.

"Castaway Diva" will easily warm into your heart if you're a lover of musical movie, just as it did with me. The storyline is very fictional and unreal but somehow, it hits deeper whenever the songs are sang by the female lead. Park Eun Bin shone so brightly in this series as the main lead and also shared really good songs that just fit right in.

It's a 12 episode series released in the year 2023 starring Park Eun Bin, the castaway Diva, Chae Jong-hyeop, the lover boy and Kim Hyo-jin, the dying star who meets a special fan. The series has the genres: Coming of age, comedy romantic, drama and music. A fictional but well played light and heavy story in combine by the characters.

It starts with a fan who is going everywhere in school looking for a way to speak with her idol on a phone call during a radio session. She uses a guy's phone but gets cut off half way by the student because of her too much excitement. They went from fast enemies to a very unrealistic friendship that turned true love as he searches for her since she went missing for fifteen years.

Seo Mok-ha as her character name, didn't just get stranded in the island and forgets her dream. She kept practicing while hoping for a miracle that she would leave the island someday. Her wait was over when her first love found her but she didn't know he was the one since 15 years had passed, she just felt grateful. The journey didn't work out easily to become a Diva (her dream).

She finally meets her idol only when her idol is struggling to keep her career as she had lost her touch in music, Mok-ha pushes Ran-ju, her idol to believe in music again right from the scene where she played a backstage for a presentation of one of her idol's songs. It's my most favorite from all the songs in the series and I shared a video of it below. A Ran-ju Mok-ha best scene.

It was unrealistic for a guy to wait on a crush from during high school for 15 years but I love how well played the whole story went, and I like the constant references back to the island life and lessons the lead character gave when she began her career as a Diva. The series wasn't just about a diva and her music career, it also shows the dark side of having parents who are toxic.

In a happy storyline, there were scenes I got a bit scared and hooked with suspense thanks to the villain well played by Lee Seung-joon, the father of the male lead who is bent on living with his family that long ran away from him because of his toxic self. Aside that, it's all music and the pursuit for making a career out of music. I'll give rating of 8/10 and highly recommend the series.

My entry to the Cinetv Contest you're invited.

  2. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒏-𝒐𝒇𝒇 𝑶𝒇 𝑻𝒂𝒓𝒛𝒂𝒏 𝑰𝒏 "Castaway Diva" - Series Review@merit.ahama693d

This series had me wondering so much especially about the female lead... *How did she go from "Attorney Woo" to Singer Seo Mok-ha"?* If you've seen the Korean series "Extraordinary Attorney Woo", you'll understand why I can't stop wondering. But then, it's another proof that actors are actors indeed and the good ones will always play their roles and make you think they are that way in reality.

I've been putting off this series to see it until last week and I'm silently wishing I could unsee it so I can start over again, it is that interesting and I'm a huge lover of the genres in this one... "Musical and coming of age". There's a bit of romance and comedy too.

"Castaway Diva" to me, is a lovely and even much better Korean spin-off of the popular animated movie "Tarzan" the female is stranded in an island for 15 years kinda like Tarzan who grew up in the forest. The series was released in 2023 and has only 12 episodes. You could binge watch all episodes in a day with no boring episode. A first glance at the title and image, you could bet there are no villains or scary scenes in this series but that's not the case at all.

This series reveals more about family especially the ones that are suffering domestic violence. The villains in this series are the fathers of both lead actors, it's unique to see the storyline promoting what can be done to avoid domestic violence no matter the power blood or family register has on the members of the family.

Seeing a once autistic lawyer being a singer in this series added more to the thrills I got from the start to finish, and I especially like how the storyline made sure to make her voice sound so different and lovely even to viewers just watching the series. The songs in the series are as quite addictive, I couldn't stop singing the ones I remember even after the last episode.

The storyline goes like... A bright and aspiring singer in an attempt to find her role model in music, got stranded in an island for 15 years and by the time she is rescued, the world has changed so much and her role model no longer the Diva she used to be. To bring things back to the way they were, Mok-ha makes her way through hurdles positively to stardom as a singer.

The series shows us the world of music as regards to what could affect an upcoming singer like age, scandals and past stories. With all these, Mok-ha proves to overcome them and became the best singer in her time even though she is in her early thirties.

I'm sure you get why the series has that title and where the spin-off of Tarzan came from. It is fascinating how they made sure she (Mok-ha) relate her words, music and advices to her time in the island. So many lessons to learn from her experience but not without the wonder if that's really possible in reality, for one to survive in a deserted island for that long.

I didn't mention anything about the male lead and other supporting characters but they did great in their roles especially the main villain who is the father to the male lead. I can't believe I could hate a villain character that much, even I am not so satisfied with his end in the storyline but it's way better than getting pardon or serving time in prison lol.

I'll recommend this series to anyone, it's a short one and interesting. My rating on this one would be 9/10, do check it out and let me know what you think about it.

Living 15 years away from society is a quite strong and disconcerting event, this was what caused me the main curiosity to watch the series, to know how it would develop. It's really quite refreshing to see, because we want to see how this girl is going to achieve her dreams, in addition to reintegrating into society. It's not romance, although they do try to put a little bit of it into it, but it doesn't flow in that genre. The beautiful thing is to see how someone fights for their dreams no matter how much time has passed and try to maintain optimism.

  4. Castaway Diva || Series Review@oluchi31803d

As an avid watcher of kdramas, I was finding it hard to settle on a particular drama and not find it dissappointing. I decided to pick one out of the dramas I had downloaded earlier and I finally settled on Castaway Diva. This movie has been on my To Be Watched list ever since it came out. Why is that? This is because recently, I've been drawn to underrated kdramas. I realized that some of those dramas that don't get the hype or the fame other dramas are getting, usually end up becoming one of the best for some of us.

I watched the drama and it reminded me of why I chose korean dramas as my comfort dramas. I had been quite frustrated with the turn out of the dramas I've been watching for the past two weeks and I was so glad I got to watching Castaway Diva.

Castaway Diva is a 12 episode drama, each episode with a running time of about 80minutes that stars actors Park Eun-Bin, Kim Hyo-jin, Chae Jong-Hyeop and Cha Hak-yeon. The movie follows Seo Mok-ha (Park Eun-Bin), a girl who dreams of becoming a k-pop singer but has no means to go about it. She hears about a competition organized by her favourite singer. Having no resources to participate in the competition, she employs the help of Jung Ki-ho (Chae Jong-Hyeop), her classmate to help her with his camera and to shoot the video. He agrees only because she offers to pay him for his service.

After she had completed all the requirements for her to participate in the competition, she is hindered by her father on the last day of the competition and has no hope of participating anymore. Jung Ki-ho, then helps her apply for the competition without her knowledge and she gets to win the competition and goes to Seoul for an audition, but is stranded on an uninhabited island on the way due to an unfortunate accident and gets rescued after 15 years by Kang Bo-geol and Kang Woo-hak, two brothers on a voluntary mission to cleaning deserted islands. Getting back to the real world, she continues to strive to become a singer, not letting her age be a barrier.

Although the series isn't romance-centered as characterized by kdramas, I still found the themes in this series satisfying. The fact that the series explored themes of domestic violence and mystery without making the drama seem dark is something I found commendable.

The OSTs (soundtrack) in this drama were also totally outstanding. I was surprised when I went through the OSTs and found out that Park Eun Bin sang some of the songs herself. She did a great job with the songs considering singing isn't something she does everyday. Her voice, coupled with the slow tunes made everything emotive and soothing.

Worthy of notice also, is the excellent cinematography. The crew did a good job where cinematography is concerned, thereby creating a fascinating experience that makes you feel engrossed all the while the series is on your screen. The colorful grading made the visuals even more attractive, giving you a truly enjoyable watching experience. I'm a lover of appealing visuals and this drama was up to my standard.

Were there flaws? Probably yes. I didn't get to notice any as I was so engrossed in the fun aspect of the series. Although, I must mention that the series lacked the humour peculiar to kdramas. There were some scenes that were laughable but they were just very few.

*** Overall, I totally enjoyed this series and would definitely want to give it a re-watch. I'll rate it a 4.5/5 as it brought me back into my kdrama girlie era. I loved the series and would recommend to all kdrama lovers out there and to those non-kdrama fans, you sure are welcome to check this series out. *** Images that aren't sourced are screenshots taken by me while watching the movie
