Hello everyone, if you're looking for a sci-fi, mysterious and psychological horror story then I'm here with the review of Churuli it is one of the most unique and unforgettable movies I have watched recently. You may be curious why I have called this movie unique? Well, the reason is in the movie everything is left unexplained, it's not clear, and that is exactly the reason I liked it the most. You have to figure out everything by yourself, which means the freedom of thoughts are given to the audience. This movie is directed by an underrated director Lijo Jose Pellissery, he has done many other movies before but sadly he is not recognized for his work. Anyway, it's an Indian Malayalam movie, if you never watched one then you can start with this master piece, this movie will definitely take viewers on a strange journey. When I first heard about the movie from a friend, I was not that interested, because it seemed like a predictable movie. As it was not famous I didn't take it seriously, but in the end I was wrong.
Let's explore the plot now. The story begins with two undercover police officers. They have taken the mission to capture the most dangerous wanted criminal. Many officers has failed to do this mission but these two officers are daring enough to chase the criminal to a remote village called Churuli. In the beginning, it may look like a simple mission like the other movies where police chases the criminal but this time it's completely different than your imagination and what you have seen before. As these two officers spend more time in the village they realize that something is very weird with the people of the village. Mysterious events keep occuring one by one leaving the audience with suspense. The movie successfully creates a feeling that nothing is normal in the village and it keeps the audience guessing without revealing too much.
My favourite part about the movie is the atmosphere of Churuli. As I watched the scenes everything created a scary atmosphere, the forest, the dark roads, the sounds of nature and the mysterious villagers make the movie feel real and dreamlike at the same time. I was curious about what would happen next. Also, they did not use any kind of cheap jump scares or too much action, they kept it minimal yet so mesmerizing. The movie builds suspense through its setting and characters. I'm glad they didn't forget the investigation atmosphere throughout the plot.
The acting of each characters was on point. Their performances feel natural as they are talking to us through the screen and making us feel the same intense moments. In the movie every character fits perfectly into the strange world of Churuli. There was nothing special with the dialogues, even without dialogues they successfully created the unique mood of the movie. The background music also deserve praise because they increase the tension.
Churuli is so good that it gives opportunity to explore the story with our own intelligence. Like I said before it does not give easy answers or explain everything related to the events happening in the movie. To be honest, I was a bit confused about what really happened in the end, there were too many leads. Churuli is different unlike other mystery movies that reveal every detail by the end.
In the end, I would say Churuli is thought-provoking, it's not a simple movie if you're looking for a fast-paced story then this is not the right one. You need to pay attention with patience. To me Churuli is a creative and thought-provoking movie that stands out because of its originality yet it's underrated. So, I would definitely recommend watching it at least once.
