  1. Coffee and Kareem Movie Review, Hive Exclusive Review@triverse2243d

I went into this movie just looking for some mindless fun. Coffee and Kareem provided that and much more. Anyone that hates half the movie used to build up will want to watch this one. The fun starts rather quickly and does not look back. I like that in my movies.

Coffee and Kareem, 80’s movie made in 2020

Seriously, this is remarkably like 80’s movies and how things were mixed. There are mature themes in one scene then in another, without missing a beat, is child safe antics. I am not saying every 80’s movie was like this, but a lot were.

Just go back and re-watch Goonies or Gremlins. There is good old-fashioned pre-teen and teen antics going on. Then in other scenes there is cold blooded murder happening. Do not believe me? Go ahead, rent Goonies or Gremlins on Vudu and see for yourself.

That is not a bad thing though. I am just pointing it out here because it reminded me of a simpler time. A time before the Internet, before video messaging, etc. For me, the 80’s were not all that bad. At least for me, outside of a few really bad times.

The story is setup rather quickly

Coffee and Kareem is a Netflix release that is funny. I am not all about many of the Netflix “originals”, but they are certainly getting better. It was released on April 3rd, 2020 so it is a rather recent release. One that you may have missed so far.

We meet the main players rather quickly. Police officer James Coffee is dating a single mother, Vanessa Manning, who has a 12-year-old son, Kareem. As with most pre-teens, Kareem is not happy about his mother dating someone other than his dad. The pre-teen lad has quite a potty mouth on him too so be prepared for some harsh language and innuendo.

Vanessa does not believe her precious Kareem can do anything wrong. This comes through as the movie progresses and is used as a plot point for friction. Coffee is constantly stuck between a rock and a hard place in his efforts here.

On a “bonding experience” excursion for Kareem and Coffee things go awry. Fast. Kareem is attempting to have Coffee “taken out” by a criminal fugitive. Not killed, just paralyzed from the waist down. You know, normal pre-teen activities.

Unfortunate for Kareem, he walks in on the murder of a dirty cop. Thanks to how his phone was pocketed it recorded the whole event. Coffee hears the gunshots and enters the building and in classic 80’s buddy cop style makes things worse. Kareem is not innocent in this either, accusing Coffee of various sexual advances and such. This is used by the kid to egg on the criminals to hurt Coffee.

There is a shootout, Kareem’s phone is dropped, and Coffee and Kareem end up in the trunk of a car. This is just the first 15 minutes or so.

Slight change to my review style

For the most part, I stop reviews at about the halfway mark in movies. This is done to keep from spoiling the movie and leaving enough for people to enjoy on their own.

I am stopping my review of Coffee and Kareem a little shy of that halfway mark because it moves so quick. There are spoilers that come up around this point too. Spoilers that ruin the twist of the movie.

    Yay or nay

I must give Coffee and Kareem a thumbs up. If you want to watch something made recently that reminds you of the 80’s then here, you go. You will be hard pressed to find another movie like it right now.

That is if you are not offended by harsh language by a young actor. There are also a few scenes of graphic violence, it is done in a comedic manner though.

Anyone looking for an action comedy will do well to watch Coffee and Kareem. It is available on Netflix right now.
