Hello all the lovers of the cinema! I could not see a film that disturbed me a lot since it is based on real events, where the same are related to the terrible positions that took place in the Cologne Dignity, a community in which atrocities occurred, a community in which atrocities occurred, serving the same as a site of arrests and torture, during the positioning of Augusto Pinochet to power.

Through the life of a young German couple, we can know about the events that were taking place in Chile during the 70s. Daniel, is a photographer in favor of freedom, who during his stay in Chile works by making posters and propaganda about Salvador Allende, who is the president at the beginning of the plot. His girlfriend Lena, is also of German origin, works as a stewardess and takes advantage of one of his flights to visit Daniel. Completely proud of the delivery of his boyfriend, he supports him in his ideals.

That’s when things get me up. The political climate, which already was on the verge of the collapse, the fear of exploding when the coup d’état on the part of the military Augusto Pinochet. Upon learning of the news, Daniel leaves the streets with his camera to portray the facts and Lena, he goes along with him. In the streets you can see the agitated atmosphere, people flee and the military go after them. Daniel next to Lena, try to get away from the military as he tries to take photographs of the beatings and arrests as evidence. But they are discovered and they are taken with the rest of the persecuted to a kind of stadium.

In that crowded place of people, suddenly a hooded man appears that begins to point out the followers of Allende, who are then removed from the rest. The subject recognizes Daniel among the crowd and the young man is taken to a van. Completely frightened, Lena watches as she took her boyfriend without being able to do anything to avoid it.

Unable to keep his hands crossed, Lena tries to find out the whereabouts of Daniel, until she manages to learn about the Cologne Dignity, where the young man must probably be. Armada de determination, the woman infiltrates into the site that on the outside, looks like a religious place where people seeking salvation are gathered, moving away from everything pagan. But from the first moment he puts on his place, Lena realices that things at that site are not as they appear. In spite of all the mircons that live in the place with every day that passes, the young woman remains firm before her mission: to find her boyfriend and leave that awful place.

It is a film full of suspense and without a doubt, you fill out of impotence to know what sites there existed and still exist today. I think it is a redness to use religion to manipulate people and much worse, using centers that are supposed, should be sacred, for barbaric acts. It reminded me of several documentaries that I saw years ago about religious sects, where many of the people who are within them, are there against their will and are motivated by fear. I hope that the day arrives in which this type of injustice, are only seen in fiction stories, because knowing that they are based on real events, it only makes it more bitter. Leaving that side, I recommend it, it’s pretty good.

¡Hola a todos los amantes del cine! Hace poco pude ver un filme que me perturbó bastante puesto que el mismo es basado en hechos reales, donde el mismo se relatan los terribles acotecimientos que tuvieron lugar en la Colonia Dignidad, una comunidad en la cual ocurrieron atrocidades, sirviendo la misma como sitio de detenciones y torturas, durante el posicionamiento de Augusto Pinochet al poder.

A través de la vida de una joven pareja alemana, podemos conocer acerca de los acontecimientos que estaban dándose lugar en Chile durante los años 70. Daniel, es un fotógrafo a favor de la libertad, que durante su estadía en chile trabaja realizando afiches y propagandas acerca de Salvador Allende, quien es el presidente al inicio de la trama. Su novia Lena, es también de origen alemán, trabaja como azafata y aprovecha uno de sus vuelos para visitar a Daniel. Completamente orgullosa de la entrega de su novio, lo apoya en sus ideales.

Es entonces cuando las cosas se enturbian. El clima político, que ya de por sí estaba al borde del colapso, temina de estallar cuando ocurre el golpe de estado por parte del militar Augusto Pinochet. Al enterarse de la noticia, Daniel sale a las calles con su cámara a retratar los hechos y Lena, va junto con él. En las calles se puede ver el ambiente agitado, las personas huyen y los militares van tras ellos. Daniel junto a Lena, trata de alejarse de los militares mientras intenta tomar fotografías de las palizas y de los arrestos como evidencia. Pero son descubiertos y son llevados con el resto de los perseguidos hasta una especie de estadio.

En aquel lugar atestado de gente, de pronto aparece un hombre encapuchado que comienza a señalar a los seguidores de Allende, los cuales, son luego apartados del resto. El sujeto, reconoce a Daniel entre la multitud y el joven es llevado hasta una furgoneta. Completamente espantada, Lena observa como se llevan a su novio sin poder hacer nada para evitarlo.

Incapaz de quedarse con las manos cruzadas, Lena trata de averiguar el paradero de Daniel, hasta que logra informarse acerca de la Colonia Dignidad, lugar en donde probablemente deba estar el joven. Armada de determinación, la mujer se infiltra en el sitio que por fuera, luce como un lugar religioso en donde están reunidas personas que buscan la salvación, apartándose de todo lo pagano. Pero desde el primer momento que pone un pie en aquel lugar, Lena se da cuenta de que las cosas en aquel sitio, no son como aparentan. A pesar de todos los suplicios que vive en el lugar con cada día que pasa, la joven se mantiene firme ante su misión: Encontrar a su novio y salir de aquel espantoso lugar.

Es una película llena de suspenso y sin lugar a dudas, te llenas de impotencia al saber que sitios así existieron y aún existen en la actualidad. Pienso que es una bajeza utilizar la religión para manipular a las personas y mucho peor, usar centros que se supone, deberían ser sagrados, para actos barbáricos. Me hizo recordar varios documentales que vi hace años acerca de sectas religiosas, donde muchas de las personas que están dentro de las mismas, están ahí en contra de su voluntad y son motivadas por el miedo. Espero que llegue el día en el que éste tipo de injusticias, sólo sean vistos en relatos de ficción, porque al saber que son basados en hechos reales, sólo lo hace más amargo. Dejando eso de lado, se las recomiendo, es bastante buena.

"Inspired by true events", this phrase tends to immediately strike me, I don't know if it is the same for you, but in my case, it is the perfect bait to take the hook, as it happened to me with Colonia, the film I'm going to talk about today. However, that was not the only attraction, since I was very young I have felt a special predilection for the history of peoples and nations that suffered the excesses of war, lived the misery of the post-war period, or were victims of totalitarian and dictatorial regimes, as in the case of the coup d'état led by Augusto Pinochet in the early '70s in Chile, the context in which the plot of this film unfolds.

“Inspirada en hechos reales”, esta frase suele calar de inmediato en mí, no sé si a ustedes les pase igual, pero en mi caso es el cebo perfecto para morder el anzuelo, tal como me pasó con Colonia Dignidad, la película de la que hoy les voy a hablar. Ahora bien, ese no fue el único gancho, desde muy joven he sentido especial predilección por la historia de los pueblos y naciones que sufrieron los desmanes de la guerra, vivieron la miseria de la posguerra, o que fueron víctimas de regímenes totalitarios y dictatoriales, como el caso del golpe de Estado que propició Augusto Pinochet a inicios de los años 70 en Chile, contexto en el que se desarrolla la trama de esta película.

Starring Emma Watson (the endearing Hermione from Harry Potter), Daniel Brühl (Dr. Laszlo Kreizler from The Alienist), and the late Swedish actor Mikael Nyqvist, Colonia tells the story of a German couple (Lena and Daniel) who, while in Chilean territory, witness the coup d'état suffered by Salvador Allende's government at the hands of the armed troops commanded by Augusto Pinochet.

Protagonizada por Emma Watson (la entrañable Hermione de Harry Potter), Daniel Brühl (el Dr. Laszlo Kreizler del El Alienista), y el fallecido actor sueco Mikael Nyqvist; Colonia Dignidad relata la historia de una pareja de alemanes (Lena y Daniel), que estando en territorio chileno, son testigos del golpe de Estado que sufre el gobierno de Salvador Allende a manos de las tropas armadas comandadas por Augusto Pinochet.

Amidst the confusion of the moment, Lena and Daniel are arrested by military forces allied to Pinochet, shortly after Lena is released, but Daniel is treated as a conspirator sympathetic to the Allende government, so he is transferred to a torture center where members of the dissidents were taken to be punished. Distressed by Daniel's whereabouts, Lena discovers that he has been taken to Colonia, a German settlement that was used as a religious center but was actually the secret detention and torture center of the Pinochet regime in alliance with the German secret service.

En medio de la confusión del momento, Lena y Daniel son detenidos por las fuerzas militares aliadas a Pinochet; poco tiempo después, Lena es puesta en libertad, pero Daniel es tratado como un conspirador afecto al gobierno de Allende, por lo que es trasladado a un centro de tortura donde se llevaban a los miembros de la disidencia para ser castigados. Angustiada por el paradero de Daniel, Lena descubre que éste ha sido llevado a Colonia Dignidad, un asentamiento de alemanes que servía como centro religioso, pero que en realidad era el recinto secreto de reclusión y tortura del régimen de Pinochet en alianza con el servicio secreto alemán.

Colonia was a heavily guarded place, with very high security, where Lena manages to infiltrate as a follower of the religious sect led by the German Paul Shäfer, a cruel and ruthless man who in the name of religion was responsible for the most heinous crimes carried out in the colony. A character I loathed throughout the film, and for whom I felt even more repulsion when I learned that his real-life was marked by human rights violations and the sexual abuse of dozens of minors. Not to mention the humiliating, sexist, and degrading treatment he gave to women, a man absolutely detestable.

Colonia Dignidad, era un lugar fuertemente custodiado, de altísima seguridad, en el que Lena logra infiltrarse como seguidora de la secta religiosa liderada por el alemán Paul Shäfer, un hombre cruel y despiadado que en nombre de la religión fue responsable de los crímenes más atroces llevados a cabo en la mencionada colonia. Un personaje que aborrecí durante toda la película, y por el que sentí aún más repulsión al conocer que su vida real estuvo marcada por las violaciones de derechos humanos y el abuso sexual a decenas de menores de edad. Lo anterior, sin contar el trato humillante, machista y denigrante que le daba a las mujeres, un ser absolutamente detestable.

While Daniel was subjected to tortures that brought him to the brink of insanity, Lena tried, by all means, to bring about a meeting between them, something that in Colonia was almost impossible, since it was frowned upon, according to the religion, the meeting between men and women; just as it would be impossible to try to escape from a place from which no one managed to escape, at least not alive.

Mientras Daniel era sometido a torturas que lo llevaron al borde de la demencia, Lena procuraba por todos los medios propiciar un encuentro entre ambos, algo que en Colonia Dignidad era casi imposible, pues estaba mal visto, según la religión, el encuentro entre hombre y mujeres; como imposible sería huir de un sitio del que nadie lograba escapar, al menos no con vida.

The dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet lasted 17 years, Colonia, the film, shows perhaps a tip of the iceberg of what this period meant for the political dissidents of the regime, it reveals the alliances and conspiracies in favor of the dictatorship that surely contributed to the permanence of the military in power, silencing and disappearing any attempt of insurrection.

La dictadura de Augusto Pinochet se extendió por 17 años, Colonia Dignidad, la película, muestra tal vez una punta del iceberg de lo que significó este periodo para la disidencia política del régimen, en ella se deja en evidencia las alianzas y conspiraciones a favor de la dictadura que seguramente contribuyeron a la permanencia de los militares en el poder, silenciando y desapareciendo cualquier intento de insurrección.

Beyond the historical facts narrated in the film, there is the staging itself, which although at times manages to generate aversion to the facts, I felt that it fell short in its attempt to shock the audience. It is noteworthy that the story is supported by real photographs of the time, many of which showed the world the reality lived in Chile and Colonia Dignidad, although this did not mean any change for the Chilean people during those 17 years, the same case of Venezuela in the last two decades.

Más allá de los hechos históricos narrados en la película, está la puesta en escena propiamente dicha, que aunque en momentos logra generar aversión ante los acontecimientos, sentí que se quedó corta en el intento de impactar a la audiencia. Es destacable que se sustente la historia con fotografías reales de la época, muchas de las cuales mostraron al mundo la realidad vivida en Chile y en Colonia Dignidad, aunque ello no haya supuesto cambio alguno para el pueblo chileno durante esos 17 años, algo así como ha ocurrido con la realidad venezolana en las últimas dos décadas.

Returning to the film, I found it fascinating to see Emma Watson as a much more mature actress who managed to connect me with the character, left behind that little girl apprentice of magic that captivated us with her tenderness, the woman she now shows that she is made of fine wood. I really love to see her in new facets. Daniel Brühl's performance, if I found it very cold, lacking emotionality from which we could have expected much more; for his part, Mikael Nyqvist (RIP) made me hate Paul Shäfer, that's what it was all about.

Volviendo a la película, me resultó fascinante ver a una Emma Watson como actriz mucho más madura que logró conectarme con el personaje, atrás quedó aquella niña aprendiz de magia que nos cautivó con su ternura, la mujer que es ahora muestra que está hecha de madera fina. La verdad me encanta verla en nuevas facetas. La actuación de Daniel Brühl, si me pareció muy plana, carente de emocionalidad de la que se podría haber esperado mucho más; por su parte, Mikael Nyqvist (DEP) consiguió que odiara a Paul Shäfer, de eso se trataba.

Is the film new? No and I do not know why I had never come across it before because this film is from 2016, so I could have gone to see it at the cinema, and it was not until a couple of days ago that I discovered it thanks to Netflix suggestions.

Is it good, is it bad? It is not so good that I regret not having seen it before, nor is it so bad that I did not give it a chance, at this point I want to rescue that I always value the learning of history, knowing something that I did not know before and that also led me to investigate in detail, that gives an additional plus to my perception. In addition, I appreciate that it was created as a tribute to the memory of the many victims of Paul Shäfer at the Colonia.

¿La película es nueva? No, y no sé porque nunca antes me había topado con ella, pues este film es del año 2015, o sea la pude haber ido a ver en el cine, y no fue sino hasta hace un par de días que la descubrí gracias a las sugerencias de Netflix.

¿Es buena, es mala? No es tan buena como para arrepentirme de no haberla visto antes, ni es tan mala como para no haberle dado una oportunidad, en este punto quiero rescatar que igual siempre valoro el aprendizaje de la historia, el saber algo que antes desconocía y que además me llevó a investigar a detalle, eso le da un plus adicional a mi percepción. Adicionalmente, respeto que haya sido creada en homenaje a la memoria de las múltiples victimas de Paul Shäfer en la Colonia Dignidad.
