Hello to everyone in the Cine TV community! Today I join the contest #82 of the community, with the theme of the week, which is about "illness" or "disease" how to focus on a movie. So I was very motivated when I read @irenenavarroart's post, who made an excellent recommendation with the classic drama "Philadelphia". Which made me remember a movie that is related to the latter because of the disease suffered by its protagonist, it is "Dallas Buyers Club". It was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and released in 2013, featuring the outstanding performance of Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey, being the latter who would play Ron Woodroof, the protagonist of this story. ¡Hola a todos en la comunidad de Cine TV! El día de hoy me uno al concurso #82 de la comunidad, con el tema de la semana, el cual es sobre "enfermedad" o "padecimiento" cómo enfoque en una película. Así que me ví muy motivada cuando leí la publicación de @irenenavarroart, quién hizo una excelente recomendación con el clásico drama de "Philadelphia". Lo cual me hizo recordar una película que se relaciona con esta última por la enfermedad que padece su protagonista, se trata de "Dallas Buyers Club". Fue dirigida por Jean-Marc Vallée y lanzada en el año 2013, contando con la actuación destacada de Jared Leto y Matthew McConaughey, siendo este último quién interpretaría a Ron Woodroof, el protagonista de esta historia. Context of the film
Ron Woodroof is a working class man. It's 1985. He enjoys drinking, spending time with his friends, women and participating in bullfights. Overall, he has a good life, he knows it and enjoys it. Everything changes when he starts to get sick and discovers he is HIV positive. A disease he contracted when he slept with a prostitute who injected drugs intravenously. The prognosis is not good because Ron has 30 days to live, but far from feeling sorry for himself, he takes a firm stance: if he is going to die, it won't be in 30 days, he will fight for his life by taking the bull by the horns. So he starts treatment with a type of antiretroviral called AZT, but discovers that it is harmful and instead takes a supplement called T-peptide, which improves his condition. Ron decides that it would be good business to sell this drug to other patients and unwittingly becomes an activist for the rights of people with HIV.

Ron Woodroof es un hombre de clase trabajadora. Es 1985. Gusta de la bebida, pasar tiempo con sus amigos, las mujeres y participar en las corridas de toros. En general, tiene una buena vida, lo sabe y disfruta de eso. Todo cambia cuando comienza a enfermar y descubre que es VIH positivo. Enfermedad que contrajo al acostarse con una prostituta que se inyectaba drogas vía intravenosa. El pronóstico no es bueno pues a Ron le quedan 30 días de vida, pero lejos de compadecerse toma una firme postura: si va a morir, no será en 30 días, luchará por su vida (tomando el toro por los cuernos). Es así cómo se somete a tratamiento con un tipo de antiretroviral llamado AZT, pero descubre que es perjudicial y en su lugar se hace con un suplemento llamado péptido T, el cual mejora su estado. Ron decide que sería buen negocio vender este medicamento a otros enfermos y sin advertirlo se convierte en un activista por los derechos de las personas con VIH.
A problem of social, health, justice and uninformed consumerism.
The film served as a means to make visible the social segregation, emotional desolation and physical wear and tear suffered by people living with HIV. Especially at a time when not enough was known about the issue and stigma soon followed thanks to the fear generated by such news. Although clearly I cannot blame an entire population for a global health problem that was poorly managed. There were several factors at play, however, that does not justify the level of discrimination and intolerance. This social embarrassment is not the only thing they had to deal with because in addition to having to deal with a lethal disease, the health and justice system failed Ron and all HIV patients.
Acceptance and human treatment is something that Ron resents because his family and friends reject him, but at least he finds comfort in Rayon (his friend transformer) and in Dr. Eve (who supports him in his way to approve the T-peptide). That is why this new approach to a life where he is no longer the "good-natured" man but rather at the point of marginality, teaches Ron to treat others with dignity. Focusing little by little less on the club's financial gain and more on the well-being and safety of his patients. What was once a business becomes a cause. Ron is a smart man and understands that this is no longer about himself, but a health problem he must solve. A laudable development.
The denunciation of the health system, which does little or nothing to obtain a significant improvement for the sick (since the interest of these institutions and companies seems to be in other things), is one of the themes of the film. As I mentioned above. Ron was a person who refused to suffer and die like a dog, so he posed a threat. Bending over backwards was not his thing and it was that reckless spirit that got him the FDA (who tested AZT on HIV patients) reprimanded before the law and kept him alive for 7 years. Although he was not able to get T-peptide legalized, Ron Woodroof did much more; he motivated others to fight a cause. Finally my friends, that's as far as this post goes. Un problema social, de salud, de justicia y de un consumismo desinformado
La película sirvió cómo un medio para visibilizar la segregación social, la desolación emocional y el desgaste físico que padecen quienes portan VIH. Sobre todo en una época dónde no se conocía lo suficiente sobre el tema y los estigmas no tardaron en llegar gracias al miedo que generó tal noticia. Aunque claramente tampoco puedo culpar a toda una población por un problema de salud mundial que fue mal manejado. Fueron varios factores en juego, sin embargo, eso no justifica el nivel de discriminación y de intolerancia. Esta vergüenza social no es lo único con lo que tenían que lidiar pues ademas de tener que acarrear con una enfermedad letal, el sistema de salud y de justicia le falló a Ron y a todos los enfermos con VIH.
La aceptación y el trato humano es algo que Ron resiente pues su familia y amigos lo rechazan, pero al menos halla consuelo en Rayon (su amigo transformista y con VIH) y en la doctora Eve (quién lo apoya en su camino de aprobar el péptido T). Es por eso que ese nuevo acercamiento a una vida dónde ya no es el hombre "bonachón" sino más bien que está punto de la marginalidad, le enseña a Ron a tratar a los demás con dignidad. Enfocándose poco a poco menos en el beneficio económico del club y más en el bienestar y seguridad de sus "pacientes". Lo que en un momento fue un negocio se transforma en una causa. Ron es un hombre inteligente y comprende que esto ya no se trata sobre sí mismo sino de un problema de salud que debe resolver. Renunciando incluso al tabaco, las bebidas y todo el venenos que nos venden y consumismo sin pensar demasiado. Un desarrollo loable.
La denuncia hacia el sistema de salud, que poco o nada hace para obtener una mejora significativa para los enfermos (pues el interés de estás instituciones y empresas parece estar en otras cosas), es un punto a tratar. Cómo mencione arriba. Ron era una persona que se negó a sufrir y morir cómo un perro, por eso él representaba una amenaza. Doblegarse no era lo suyo y ese espíritu temerario fue el que lo hizo conseguir que la FDA (quién hacia las pruebas de AZT en pacientes con VIH) fuera amonestado ante la ley y además lo mantuvo con vida durante 7 años. Aunque no pudo conseguir la legalización del péptido T, Ron Woodroof hizo mucho más; motivar a otros para luchar contra una causa. Finalmente amigos míos, hasta aquí llega esta publicación.
