🎭 Death Parade – Judgment, Memory, and the Weight of a Human Life@zeruxanime137d
What happens after death? Death Parade doesn’t answer that question directly—but it makes you feel the gravity behind it.
Released in 2015 and produced by Madhouse, this psychological drama blends suspense, philosophy, and emotional storytelling into a series that is as unsettling as it is beautiful.
When I first watched Death Parade, I expected a dark thriller. What I found was something far more human.
🍸 The Bar Where Decisions Are Final
The story takes place in a mysterious bar where recently deceased individuals arrive without knowing they’ve died. There, they are asked to play games—seemingly harmless at first.
But these games slowly reveal hidden emotions, regrets, fears, and truths. Every move exposes something about the soul.
Behind the bar stands Decim, the arbiter responsible for judging who deserves to move on—and who does not.
🎲 Games That Reveal the Heart
The brilliance of Death Parade lies in its psychological tension. The games aren’t about winning or losing—they’re about revealing the human heart under pressure.
As memories resurface and emotions intensify, the line between good and evil becomes blurred. No one is purely innocent. No one is purely guilty.
🌓 Emotion in a World Without It
One of the most fascinating aspects of the anime is its quiet exploration of empathy. The arbiters are meant to judge without emotion—but what happens when understanding begins to replace detachment?
The soundtrack enhances the atmosphere perfectly—sometimes playful, sometimes haunting, always deliberate.
💫 A Thought-Provoking Reflection on Humanity
Death Parade is not simply about death—it’s about life. It’s about the weight of our choices, the complexity of human emotion, and the idea that judgment is never simple.
It leaves you thinking long after the final episode ends.
If you enjoy anime that challenge your perspective and explore the darker corners of the human psyche, Death Parade is a powerful and unforgettable experience.
Hello Anime lovers, welcome again to my blog, today I will be talking about "Death Parade."
Death Parade is one of those anime you don’t just “watch”, you experience it, I went into this thinking it would be some simple supernatural show about death and judgment, but I came out feeling quiet, thoughtful, and slightly heavy, It is short, just 12 episodes, but the impact? Way bigger than its length.
The anime is set in a mysterious bar called Quindecim, People arrive there after they die, but they don’t remember how they died or who they are at first, they are told they must play a game, simple games too darts, bowling, air hockey, cards, but these aren’t normal games, the results decide where their souls go: reincarnation or the void.
At first, it feels like a twisted version of “life or death games.” But as you keep watching, you realize Death Parade isn’t really about the games, It’s about people, their choices, their regrets, their love, their anger, their selfishness, their kindness, the games are just tools to bring out who they truly are.
Decim, the bartender, is calm, quiet, and almost emotionless, he is the one judging people, watching him interact with human souls is interesting because he doesn’t fully understand human feelings, he follows rules, observes behavior, and passes judgment based on what he sees, but humans are messy,we contradict ourselves, we lie, we love and hurt at the same time, and that confuses him.
Then comes Chiyuki, a human assistant who starts working with Decim, she brings something different, Empathy, Questions, doubt, she doesn’t just watch people suffer , she wonders if the system itself is fair, and that is where the anime really shines, It starts asking you uncomfortable questions.
Is one bad decision enough to define a person?, Do people deserve second chances? , Can you judge someone’s entire life based on their worst moment?
Some episodes will hit you harder than others, there are stories about broken friendships, toxic relationships, guilt, jealousy, sacrifice, and unconditional love, some episodes end quietly, some leave you staring at your screen, a few might even make your chest feel so tight.
What I loved about Death Parade is how it doesn’t try to tell you what to think, It shows you situations and lets you decide how you feel about them, there’s no clear “good” or “evil.” Just humans being human.
The art style and soundtrack also deserve some praises, the opening is upbeat and very catchy, which feels ironic considering how heavy the anime is, but it just fits, the visuals are really clean, expressive, and atmospheric, the bar itself feels like a character of its own
Death Parade is not an anime you binge while scrolling your phone, you have to pay serious attention, the small details matter, expressions matter and silence too matters.
By the end, the anime quietly changes you, not in a loud, dramatic way. But in a soft, reflective way,you start thinking about your own choices. Your own regrets, the people you’ve hurt. The people who’ve hurt you.
If you want an anime that’s short, deep, emotional, and different from the usual action heavy stuff, Death Parade is a must watch, It stays with you long after the last episode ends.
So.. I decided to watch an anime after finishing a report I was working on and finding it difficult to sleep last night. I already had some anime downloaded on my phone. I settled with Death Parade since it was just twelve episodes and the shortest among the ones I had. So I picked it, thinking I’d just watch an episode or two before bed. Long story short, I ended up watching everything. The good part? I had nothing planned for today.

**The Plot**
Death Parade tells us that after humans die, they do not go to heaven or hell. Instead, they go to a bar called Quindecim. A bartender named Decim ran the bar. However, Decim is not just a bartender, he is also an arbiter. His job is to judge souls through a game. Two people who died at the same time are brought to the bar, with no memory of how they died. Decim tells them to play a game, it could be darts, bowling, air hockey, old maid, anything. But these games are not what they seem. As the player who’s already dead play, their memories come back piece by piece, revealing who they truly were and how they died. The games bring out the darkest, rawest parts of them - fear, guilt, love, anger, regret. After the game, Decim judge and then decide who among the two will be reincarnated and who will be sent into the void.
Decim does his job like he is a machine. He follows the rules and judge by what he sees. But then comes Chiyuki, a woman who becomes his assistant after dying with her memories erased but completely aware that she was already dead. She’s different him. She’s kind, and gentle. While Decim judges others, she kept questioning him if people should really be judged that way. It was because of her that Decim starts to come to some understanding about human emotions. The story goes on with her own truth about how she died and how she faces it.
I really enjoyed watching Death Parade. It was really different from the handful of animes I have seen. It was beautiful and heart touching all at once.
Decim easily became one of my favourite characters. There was something calm yet lonely about him. His calm voice, his stillness. The way Decim changed because of Chiyuki, slowly and not forced, made their bond so deep. It felt like he released all the emotions he had bottled up at the part where he cried for her. He is arbiter and arbiters are not supposed to feel emotions like humans.
Although the ending was sad, it wasn’t the kind of sad to ruin my good mood, no. It was kind of a small ache.
The opening song made me laugh, though. It was so cheerful compared to the mood of the show. I liked the contrast, regardless.
The anime was really engaging and had some depth in it, even though it was short.
Death Parade, is a 9 out of 10 for me. It was a nice and sad watch. The music, the plot…. Everything just flows well together. If you’re into psychological anime, then you should not skip out on Death Parade.
Greetings, friends of The Anime Realm! It's a pleasure to be with you once again. On this occasion, I would like to share my opinion and review of an anime I saw recently and really liked, Death Parade (Desu Paredo), an interesting psychological anime from 2015 created by Yuzuru Tachikawa.
What stands out most from the beginning is its premise, which tells us that when two people die at the same time, they are sent to a remote place, in this case the Quindecim pub. There, they are welcomed by Decim, a bartender who acts as both host and judge. The deceased, although they do not yet know that they have died, must participate in a game in which, in one way or another, they will be forced to show the darkest side of their souls. Whoever wins will be reincarnated, and whoever loses will go into the void. In addition to this particular bartender, there are other judges and even a kind of intern.
¡Saludos, amigos de The Anime Realm!
If we pay close attention to each episode, we will realize that the series and its premise have a deep plot that deals not only with the implications of our behavior and attitudes during our time on earth, but also with the complexity for judges when deciding on the fate of human souls from a truly fair standpoint.
In this story, there is no typical distinction between good and evil. Rather, it suggests that human beings have their moments, some more noble and others darker, depending on the complexity of the situations they experience, and also depending on the values and moral principles instilled in each person. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to judge someone until you know their motivations well, and even then, it remains a very complicated task to make a fair judgment.
In my opinion, this series has aged very well, as it presents elements and symbolism that capture the viewer's attention in each episode, allowing us to maintain our interest in the events and our desire to understand the different stories of each character, whether they are the ones on trial or the judges themselves.
I invite you to watch this series, which consists of a single season of 12 very interesting episodes that are not to be missed and also features a very danceable and fun opening that contrasts with the enigmatic plot of the series. Thank you for joining me here, see you soon with another review.

After finishing Death Parade, I kept thinking about how easily it could have been another shallow gimmick show. The premise sounds like a game of the week: two people die, they show up at a mysterious bar, and they’re forced into strange contests that secretly expose the worst in them. At first I thought it would be fun and twisted, but I quickly realized it wasn’t really about the games at all. It was about the weight of being judged, and even more, about the uneasiness of watching others stripped down to their rawest instincts. What caught me off guard is that instead of offering neat resolutions, the anime kept poking at uncomfortable questions about fairness, morality, and whether judgment without compassion has any meaning.
Balance is something this series struggles with, though. On one hand, it nails the unsettling atmosphere, with its sharp contrasts of elegance and horror, the eerie calm of Decim as an arbiter, and the moral ugliness that spills out of seemingly ordinary people when they’re pressured. On the other hand, the episodic format sometimes makes it feel uneven, because not every set of characters is equally compelling. Some episodes hit hard, leaving me disturbed for days, while others felt more like filler, repeating the same formula without the same emotional punch. I respected the ambition, but I couldn’t ignore how inconsistent the pacing was.
Curiosity is what kept me hooked, though, especially with Chiyuki. She’s the real heart of the show, and her presence challenges the cold system Decim represents. Without her, the bar would be nothing but a sterile machine of judgment, and I would have probably tuned out. Through her, the story finally allows empathy to break through, and that’s where the anime becomes more than just a dark morality play. The problem is that it takes too long to give her the attention she deserves. For a series that only runs twelve episodes, the slow burn sometimes feels like wasted potential. I wanted more time with her and less repetition of side stories that didn’t leave a mark.
Decim himself is a strange case for me. He’s supposed to be the center, yet he often feels more like a tool than a character. I appreciated his quiet growth, the way Chiyuki’s presence nudged him toward something resembling humanity, but for most of the show he remains frustratingly flat. Maybe that was intentional, but it also meant I wasn’t as invested in him as I wanted to be. It’s ironic that a series about judgment leaned so heavily on a character designed to be nearly emotionless. The bar’s aesthetic, the symbolism, and the atmosphere did a lot of the heavy lifting where Decim should have carried more.
Overall, Death Parade is the kind of anime that sticks with me, even with its flaws. It forced me to question my own reactions, not just to the characters but to the whole idea of justice and punishment. Still, it left me wishing it had been bolder with its structure and deeper with its main cast. It’s not perfect, but it’s far from forgettable. If anything, it proves how rare it is to find an anime willing to confront uncomfortable truths without giving easy answers. And for all the unevenness, I’d rather have that than another series afraid to take risks. Watching it felt like sitting in judgment too, and realizing how much harder it is to be fair than I’d like to admit.
With my recent foray into the world of anime, even the algorithm of my social networks has been influenced. Now I get a lot of recommendations of stories that, according to them, I should definitely check out. And among them, I found Death Parade, an anime that premiered in 2015 and has just 12 episodes.
The plot presents us with an intriguing premise: when two people die at the same time, they are sent to a mysterious place, in this case represented as a bar called Quindecim, where they will be attended by a very particular bartender. This bartender subjects them to a “game” that on the surface seems harmless, but in reality is designed to bring out the deepest and darkest parts of their souls. In the end, the purpose is to decide: who reincarnates and who falls into the void?
On first impression it might seem like a simple story. But once you start watching it, you realize that Death Parade is much deeper than it appears. I would go so far as to say that it is a subtle but powerful critique of what it really means to judge another human being. Can we really decide who deserves a second chance? How much do our emotions influence decisions that are supposed to be impartial?
One of the things that caught me the most was that here there are no typical “good guys” or “bad guys”. There is no stark black and white: the story moves in a huge palette of grays that forces us to question our own moral beliefs. As I watched each judgment, I understood that it is not so simple to judge someone. Every action, every mistake, is tinged by specific circumstances that we are often unaware of.
I saw Death Parade ten years after its release, and was still surprised at how current and elegant it feels. The character design is stylized, with somber, minimalist environments that contrast with the almost disturbing colorfulness of the games. The animation is impeccable: there are subtle movements and facial expressions that convey more than a lot of dialogue. Each episode is loaded with visual symbolism that invites you to stop and look beyond the surface.
As for the soundtrack, the music plays a fundamental role. It oscillates between jazz and a dark minimalism that perfectly accompanies the tension of each trial. And I can't fail to mention the opening “Flyers” by BRADIO, cheerful and danceable, which in an almost ironic way clashes on purpose with the somber tone of the series. That duality between appearance and essence is precisely one of the great themes that Death Parade explores.
After marathoning all 12 episodes, I was left pondering two fundamental questions: What truly defines a person? Can justice exist without empathy? I think those are the real questions Death Parade leaves us with as viewers. It does not seek to give us closed answers, but to push us to look at life and death from another perspective. Each departure, each trial, is also a look at ourselves.
Honestly, I really enjoyed this story and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a different anime, deep and perfect for a marathon. Now I ask you: have you seen Death Parade, what did you think of it, what questions or reflections did it leave you with, I'll read you in the comments!

Death Parade for me is one of the anime gems that left us wanting more, but unfortunately it does not have a second season, it would be fantastic if they made one but it is still worth watching the first and only one, I must say that I love the theme of death in anime series, this was no exception and in just 12 chapters it was able to capture me, the story focuses on a bar where deceased people are sent to be judged, there is actually a tower in the afterlife where several of these bars exist, the bar manager or bartender is in charge of receiving people and makes them play games of chance where they bet their lives, the idea is that at the end of the game the bartender is the referee who decides who will go to reincarnation and who will go to the infinite void.
The protagonist of the series is Decim, an expressionless bartender who receives two people who have died at the same time, he seems to be used to the job of being a referee of the games, when people arrive at the bar they have no memories prior to that moment, so we know that they have died, when Decim explains to them that they must bet their lives on the game they select, people will gradually bring out their emotions and survival instincts, in short Decim's goal is to bring out the darkness that each person harbors in their soul in order to determine where those souls will go, apparently the anime maintains a simple premise, but everything changes when a black-haired woman arrives to be Decim's assistant as a referee.
Decim at first believes that he is doing things correctly, as arbitrators have rules that they must follow, the first is that all arbitrators must issue judgments, that is, each soul must be judged, the second rule is that arbitrators cannot die because death would bring them too close to humanity and the third rule is that arbitrators cannot have human emotions, but when working with the black-haired woman, Decim realizes many gaps in his work, he begins to doubt about the way the judgments are carried out.
One of the most interesting aspects is the duality that exists in the idea of judging a soul, on the one hand what Decim has learned is that taking people to extreme situations of danger and anguish leads them to show their true intentions, because only evaluating people's memories is not enough to make a judgment, the person must be tested before making a decision, however, the black-haired woman has her doubts with each client that comes to the bar, she does not trust that pressuring people in that way is the best, because human beings are ambiguous, that is, anyone can make incorrect decisions and considered evil if circumstances pressure them to do so and that should not define whether the person deserves to go into the void.
Later in the anime, the origin of the black-haired woman is explained and why she has a way of thinking so different from the other referees, but it is also explained why Decim has sympathy for her, he begins to question his decisions and the idea that there must be a purpose for all of this bounces around in his head. The anime begins with the resolution of specific cases of clients who arrive, but in the end the main case is resolved, which is the thread that unites all the chapters. This anime is partly very emotional and also leads to reflection on the aspects of humanity, what it means to be human, our actions as a reflection of what we think and how sometimes people act without thinking, even duality is part of everything that it means to live. I invite you to watch this anime that is quite calm, dark but at the same time very cute.

Today I bring you a new review of my Anime Challenge and this time it's about the anime Death Parade.
I have already watched this anime several times, and I decided to watch it again for this occasion and refresh my memory to make this review. It is one of those series that is worth watching again after a while because of how good it is, because of the deep themes it touches and the way it does it.
"Death Parade" takes place in a bar called Quindecim, where two people who die at the same time are brought to play deadly games. The referee of these games is a character named Decim, who judges the participants based on their actions during the game. As the series progresses, themes such as human nature, morality and the afterlife are explored.
The anime is known for its mature and thoughtful approach, as well as its high-quality animation and emotional soundtrack.
Decim is the main referee at the Quindecim bar. With his quiet and reserved appearance, he judges the souls who comes to the bar through games that reveal their true nature. Although he appears cold and detached, Decim has a deep curiosity about humanity and its emotions.
Chiyuki:
Chiyuki is a mysterious young woman who becomes Decim's assistant in Quindecim. Unlike the others, she appears to be alive and possesses a strong sense of morality and empathy. Her presence challenges Decim's beliefs and plays a crucial role in his development.
Nona:
Nona is the supervisor of the referees in Quindecim. Although she appears carefree and playful, she has an important role in managing the judgment system and guiding Decim. She is wise and deeply understands the complexity of human souls.
Strengths:
Thematic Depth: "Death Parade" tackles deep and philosophical themes about life, death, morality and judgment, making it a very thoughtful and emotionally impactful anime.
Character Development: The characters are well developed, and their personal stories are explored in such a way that the viewer can empathize with them.
High Quality Animation: The Madhouse studio has done an exceptional job with the animation, providing beautiful, fluid visuals that enhance the viewing experience.
Soundtrack: The background music and opening and closing themes are memorable and perfectly complement the atmosphere of the anime.
Originality: The premise of the anime is unique and original, which sets it apart from many others in the supernatural genre.
Weaknesses:
Variable Pacing: Some episodes may feel slower than others, which can affect the overall pacing of the series.
Limited Explanations: Some parts of the plot and the workings of the world of "Death Parade" are not explained in detail, which may leave the viewer with unanswered questions.
Number of Episodes: With only 12 episodes, some viewers may feel the series falls short and wish the story and secondary characters were developed more.
Discontinuity: The ending may seem abrupt to some, and while it brings the main story to a good close, it leaves certain elements open to interpretation.
Conclusion:
"Death Parade" is an anime that not only entertains, but also invites deep reflection on universal themes such as life, death and morality. Its originality and ability to strike a chord make it stand out in the genre. The high-quality animation and memorable soundtrack are strong points that elevate the viewer's experience. However, the variable pacing and some limited explanations may leave you wanting more.
All in all, "Death Parade" is a series worth watching, especially for those who enjoy stories that combine supernatural elements with a deep exploration of human nature.
Rating:
Thanks to its unique story, great animation, memorable opening and touching ending, this series is one of those worth watching several times, which I've already done, this being the 4th time hahaha. I could easily give it a 10/10, but since it seems to me that the story and some characters could have been developed a bit more, I'll give it a solid and deserved 9/10.
Opening:
Flyers - BRADIO.
"Flyers" is the opening track of "Death Parade" and is performed by the band BRADIO. The song has a funk rock style and its lyrics encourage listeners to express their personality, overcome their problems and fly high with their dreams and passions. The energy and rhythm of the song perfectly contrasts and complements the intense and emotional atmosphere of the anime.
"Last Theater" is the closing theme of "Death Parade" and is performed by NoisyCell. The song has a more melancholic and reflective tone, exploring the feelings of a person facing death and questioning their past choices and actions. The lyrics and music create an introspective atmosphere that reflects well on the deep themes of the anime.

Last week I told you about Zankyō no Terror, an anime that honestly got to me because of its captivating story. After watching it I thought it would be difficult to find something similar in the sea of stories out there but fortunately I managed to find an anime that I dare to say that it has been one of the best I've seen in recent months. Death Parade is a story with an immense load of feelings related to life itself, with its feelings, with what represents life and death and how we can become as people throughout our short existence. At first glance it looks like just another anime but believe me when I tell you that it is a gem of a good one.
What is there after death? - That's the million dollar question. One of the answers to that can be found here. Somewhere in existence there is a bar called Quindecim which is attended by Decim, this mysterious man who acts as a bartender; he will be the host of these souls who arrive at the reception. Disoriented, they are invited to participate in a game where the destiny of each one is put in suspense, being hell or heaven, emptiness or reincarnation. But who decides this? - Well, our white-haired friend who, at the same time as serving the drinks, acts as judge or referee in these games of death.
The purpose of all this is to know the true nature of people, is to remove the darkness of the souls so that the process of judging is more effective. Throughout the chapters we will see how different games are played where the guests, without knowing it, participate in their final destiny. Because this is important to say, these people do not know that they died, hence for them the experience is more real and traumatic. In the end, and depending on how each one acts, their souls will be sent to the places I mentioned before. The really top of this anime is that each episode is a different story within the main plot. This happens because people are different and with them their experiences and their way of facing each situation.
For me it is one of the best anime because the psychological burden it has is big and heavy, many things and decisions we make in life are questioned. It is like an introspective journey where each game brings out the worst or the best in everyone, according to Decim you have to put people in extreme situations to see what they are capable of doing and how they react. In effect and as a saying goes "every head is a world" and in this plot we see it as such. Being in pairs is super interesting how different we are, many of us are full of fears, anger, hatred but we can also have a lot of love, admiration and compassion; that duality of feelings and actions is brutal to see in the games that are given.
The stories are hard, many times when we see the pain in the decisions and why they are made it is very possible that it affects us as spectators, I'm not going to lie that sometimes you get to feel really sad and that's because we empathize more than necessary. If you are a person of easy tears, it is very likely that some of them will fall. The animation is spectacular, very well done and with super careful details; visually it is very beautiful. And even the soundtrack is another show, often accompanies the great scenes as an excellent complement which is perfect for creating the right atmosphere.
The characters are all very top notch. Decim is accompanied by Chiyuki, one of these souls who is awaiting her trial. She, having been human, teaches our judge to be a little more empathetic with people, those innate feelings in us are not felt by Decim or any judge since they are not human, hence the fact that many times he is a little cold. The construction of this relationship is brutal, you will enjoy it a lot. The rest are also important, Nona, Ginti, all are great characters who contribute a lot to the story. Very well constructed each and every one of them.
An anime that for me is a 10 in every way. It is from 2015 so I do not understand how I was almost 9 years without knowing about it. The story is unique, the handling of its characters with all the psychological and emotional is the best and the audiovisual is excellent. I recommend it to everyone, it's worth it. I leave the trailer here.

Hello, friends in The Anime Realm Community this is my first post in this community, I did not expect to find a community whose contents are related to Anime and something related to it. I am very interested in sharing some fascinating posts with all of my friends. I've loved Anime since I was little when I first watched Doraemon, Crayon Sinchan, and One Piece, until now I have watched countless.
Anime is a spectacle that has a lot of positive impact on me even though many people out there think that watching Anime is only for children, and this is not true. In my opinion, many Anime is intended for 17+ because they contain content that is not worth watching for children and a storyline that only adults will understand. In this post, I will tell one of the Anime that I think is underrated but has an interesting story with a deep message about meaning and living as a fellow human being. Happy reading!
**Death Parade** is a ***Japanese*** anime that aired in **2015**, produced by [Madhouse Studio Animation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhouse_(company)), all story ideas from Death Parade were developed originally by Madhouse, unlike other anime that are generally adapted from manga or bestselling novels in Japan.
Death Parade has a genre that combines many elements in it like Drama, Thriller, Game, Psychological, and Mystery combined into one story, which I think is very interesting and has a moral message about life in each episode.
Storyline
This anime begins with Two people who wake up in a dark bar, and when they walk, they will be greeted by a bartender who greets them with the words "Come on in. Welcome to Quendecim", then they will be asked to participate in a game that asks participants to risk their lives.
The bartender acts as a Judge in the games played by the participants, he decides who has the right to win in the game. The initial story of Death Parade made the audience think and guess the purpose of the game that must be followed by people who had just woken up, not to mention the audience was confused about the background of the participants who would join in the game.
Little by little, the mystery began to open where the participants who suddenly woke up in the Bar were humans who had just died, and they were in Decim, which is a place for judgment, the goal of the game is to determine who is bad and good. Those who have bad qualities will enter the Void Realm, while those who are good will be sent to Reincarnation. A person goes to reincarnation or the void realm is determined by his actions during life, and when participating in the game in the Quendecim Bar, participants who play the game initially do not remember what happened before, their memories will also be seen as the game progresses.
In each episode, the audience will also think about how the game will be won, and the dramatic feelings between players will also be felt. The moral message in each incident experienced by players will be different in each episode. Each game has elements that are mixed from **painful to deadly** that will be experienced by players, coupled with the psychic conditions and drama that occurs during the game, I can't forget this Anime even though it's been years.
The animation quality presented by Death Parade is pretty solid and pleasing to the eye coupled with a story full of mixed feelings that makes this Death Parade one of my favourite Anime.
Another thing that I can't forget about Death Parade is the Opening Song, which is not in line with the dark and dark content of the story, the audience will be happy at the Opening, and when they enter the story the atmosphere immediately changes.
The next thing that I can't forget about this anime is the Ending Song entitled "Last Theater" by NoisyCell whose lyrics describe the dramatic atmosphere as in the anime story itself.
Conclusion
Anime with the Afterlife Genre has indeed been present and managed to provide a different story in each title, like the Death Parade, in my opinion, is recommended to watch. Although its release almost 7 years ago did not make this anime old school, the visuals presented by Madhouse Studio were very good with results that were not much different from the current anime.
›Death Parade: An anime with a very particular style but actually really cool [ENG/ESP]@jandresd071965d
English
Hello to all the community of The Anime Realm, today I want to talk about an anime that is not so well known but for me is one of the best and most entertaining that I have come to see in a long time, and is that with a premise so original and with a soundtrack so epic and a brutal animation, Death Parade is an anime that deserves to be commented and hope that I managed to be seen by many more people and I must comment before starting with the post that this anime is quite short so maybe this post is also hahaha.
This anime is not based on any manga so we have a totally original story, being written by Yuzuru Tachikawa (who was also the director of the work) and was animated by the great studio Madhouse (which presents an incredible quality in the animation of this) with only 12 episodes (which literally can be seen in an afternoon haha) plus I consider it has one of the most danceable and coolest openings in the history of anime haha (Flyers of Bradio, I'll leave it below this paragraph so you can listen to it and move to the rhythm of this epic song) and its ending I must say that it encompasses many of the feelings of the characters of this anime being quite melancholic (being this Last Theater by NoisyCell).
Opening of Death Parade
This anime introduces us to Decim, the practically emotionless in charge of the Quindecim bar, to which certain souls are taken after dying (usually souls of people who died at the same time), in this bar these souls (which do not remember that they are dead or the reason for their death) must play certain types of betting games in which they will bet their lives (or so Decim makes them believe) and as the pressure increases seeing the chances of losing we will see how they will show us their true nature and the cause for which they are in the bar. Decim is in charge of choosing which of these souls due to their actions will be reincarnated or sent to the infinite void. We are also introduced to Chiyuki, a young girl who does not remember her past but is in charge of helping Decim with the different games in the bar; as the chapters go by we will see her true identity and what it means to Decim.
This anime could be considered as an anthology in most of its episodes, since none is related to the previous one but in a few episodes (basically in the last ones of the anime), which gives a very unique touch to this anime, besides the development of characters and the reasons why they perform their respective jobs are really very entertaining.
Really this anime is quite entertaining if you are looking for something a little more related to comedy and with touches a little more mature, especially when talking about the reason for the death of those who enter the bar and the decisions they make, plus it's great to see the development that the Decim has thanks to its interaction with Chiyuki, if you want to see an anime different from the typical Shōnen or Seinen, this is the best recommendation I can give you, I hope you are great and we'll see each other another time.

Death Parade was hailed as the best title of winter 2015, partly because of the hype it had from the fanbase of its prequel, the single OVA Death Billiards, and partly because of DAT CATCHY OPENING SONG. It’s a nice sound alright, and the colors are pretty, because Madhouse, but come on, it’s not fitting at all. The cheery stuff it shows has nothing to do with the gloomy and depressing tone of the series. Just like the opening of Madoka Magica it is trolling the viewer into expecting a completely different show.
MYSTERY BOX
This expands to the whole anime, since it constantly wants to trick the viewer, by hiding pretty much everything that is going on, until it’s all revealed at once with a tsunami of emotions following it. You are supposed to be initially puzzled and eventually shocked with the revelation. So yeah, the trump cards the show uses are mystery boxes and shock effect, stuff that I consider tactless. The former means nothing once it’s revealed and the latter is just cheap jump scares. And even so, it’s not even that good at it, since the thrill dissolves if it is used in every episode. It worked in Death Billiards because it was a single ova with the viewer being unsuspected, but if you try to pull the same trick a dozen times in a row, it loses its meaning, since you feel nothing after the second time.
BLAND PROTAGONISTS
The problems continue with the very protagonists. Strip them down to essentials and what do you get? An emotionless dude with no background or objectives, which may look cool but is otherwise impossible to relate with in any way. And a woman with amnesia, thus again someone with no background or objective. She is even used as a lobotomized askman type of character, left blank and oblivious, so she needs everything being constantly explained. This turns her into a passive observer and alien to the setting, making it harder to be immersed in it.
LAZY EXPOSITION
This is done deliberately, since the show tries to puzzle the viewer by keeping everything a secret. It is supposed to reveal it one chunk at a time, through whatever she asks… and does a pitiful job even then, since the exposition is terrible. Despite having a lobotomized askman, many explanations are not replies to her questions, but rather people explaining stuff without anyone around. Meaning, most of everything is lazy infodumping monologues where people are talking to thin air. And even so, by the time the series ends, almost nothing is explored or explained concerning the setting of the afterlife, and the themes of guilt and regret. Everything remains a mystery, including all those people you see in the opening. They barely get ten minutes of total screen time each.
NO PLOT
So, what the hell were the characters doing for a dozen episodes if not gradually expositioning themselves and the setting? Well, they basically wasted most episodes on standalone cases. Some people will appear, they will play a game, and then the episode ends and are never seen again. The series is not completely episodic, since it does reveal a few things from time to time; but nothing really is explained or resolved by the end of it, so you might as well call it meaningless filler. Every arbiter has his own side story but it is never looked into and he/she ends up being defined only by a single personality trait. The two protagonists sort of have their issues resolved, but it’s not something that needed a dozen episodes to be taken care of. They just didn’t deal with the silly amnesia gimmick, up until the ending was close by.
BULLSHIT JUDGEMENT
Speaking of taking care of things, the show uses a really pretentious form of psychology, where people are not judged based on their actions but rather on how they feel about them. And apparently the best way to reveal that, is by brainwashing and driving them insane, without their knowledge or means to defend themselves. This means, motives are meaningless while emotional reactions are everything. This is further perplexed by how the arbiters who decide everything do not comprehend emotions, and yet they are supposed to reach a verdict based on those alone. And as if that wasn’t weird enough, they are not emotionless, since they clearly have emotions and express them all the time.
In case you are paying attention, it won’t take long to figure out how the whole reincarnation system is fundamentally flawed and unfair, not to mention irrational. The show will try to distract you by not explaining anything, and by throwing at your face a completely irrelevant opening song, second only to Frozen’s Let It Go. And if you are still unable to grasp such an obvious flaw, ponder about this: why should good people be evaluated only when they are at their worst, along with bad people who are always at their worst? Imagine what will happen when a boy scout and an asymptomatic serial killer, like the ones you find in Psycho Pass are judged this way. The boy scout will lose its shit out of guilt for not saving a cat from a tree and will be sent to the void, while the asymptomatic killer won’t give a shit and be sent for reincarnation. And even then, the outcome is always meaningless. If you fail, your soul is lost. If you pass, you reincarnate, only until you die and be judged again, until you fail regardless of previous judgments. You won’t even remember anything that happened in the afterlife, thus you don’t learn anything. Plus, they make it seem like despite all this process of letting only “good people” to reincarnate, the world is still a shithole.
TROLL ENDING
Even the ending is a complete copout. The lead heroine has to be judged as well, after she conveniently regains her memories (something that was overlooked all this time by the arbiters for no real reason). Her test though is totally unfair compared to the other cases because, unlike the rest, she was given more than enough time and experience to make the right decision, a chance nobody else was given. So much for fair judgment! And it won’t matter anyways, since she won’t remember whatever happened there and can fail the next time she dies.
MEANINGLESS SERIES
So basically you waste your time watching a dozen episodes of people getting manipulated, driven insane, and then judged unfairly by a bogus system. You can claim that one of the themes of the series is about pointing out that the system is unfair. So what was the point of spending most of the series in those stand alone cases, full of overblown dramatization, if in the end they all get the middle finger? All these characters get no catharsis regardless of what you think or feel about them.
TONAL SHIFTS
And as if all that weren’t enough, the show is not even consistent with its own mood. Aside from the opening, there are whole episodes full of comedy and rule of cool, that feel completely out of place with the rest, and lessen its atmosphere.
OVERRATED TRASH
Down to it, this show is a total mess and yet another example of how easily anime fans are manipulated to like total nonsense because of pretty colors and nice sounds. If I was an arbiter, I would send to the void anyone who considers it anything more than average. And yes, I would still be fairer than the bogus system of this series.
