  1. Film Review: Do Not Disturb (1999)@drax1114d

Dick Maas is Dutch film maker who, unlike his compatriots Paul Verhoeven and George Sluizer, didn’t reach Hollywood. So, instead, he brought a little bit of Hollywood to Netherlands with his 1999 thriller Do Not Disturb. The plot begins when Walter Richmond (played by William Hurt), US pharmaceutical company executive, comes to Amsterdam to conduct business negotiations, while also bringing his wife Cathryn (played by Jennifer Tilly) and 10-year old daughter Melissa (played by Francesca Brown) to enjoy sights of an old European city. Melissa, however, gets lost on the street and, since she is mute, can’t ask for directions towards hotel. While wandering she sees something she is not supposed to see – a vicious murder. When she is finally reunited with parents, they consider her story to be the product of child’s imagination and the police is even more sceptical. The killers, however, have learned that Melissa is a witness. They locate her and Melissa now must use all of her ingenuity to evade them in big and unfamiliar city.

Do Not Disturb has the basic premise which was used in many other, usually much better films, including Anthony Waller’s Mute Witness. Lack of originality is less of the problem than Maas’ poor direction that, together with series of unconvincing and outrageous plot twists in Maas’ script, at times turns this film into unintentional parody of itself. On the other hand, scenes that were supposed to be funny also fail. The cast doesn’t fare any better – Hurt, Tilly and Denis Leary (who plays street bum helping Melissa) seem disinterested in their roles. Child actress Francesca Brown takes her role more seriously and Michael Chiklis, character actor known for his excellent work in The Shield, plays character of frustrated villain very well. Unfortunately, his character near the end of the film turns into Terminator-like killing machine which is just another nail in the coffin for this film. Maas, on the other hand, tries to compensate lack of plot and character by indulging worst foreign stereotypes about Amsterdam, whose inhabitants are shown almost exclusively as drug addicts, prostitutes and perverts. Poor English dubbing and use of recognisable American actors, on the other hand, destroy even that touch of local flavour that might have rescued Do Not Disturb.
