I have watched a lot of gangster films but it is always nice to discover a classic one you haven't watched. This one is from 1997 and it has Johnny Depp and Al Pacino as its main stars. The gangsters of this movie are Italians as usual and one thing I found funny was the presence of a character named Sonny. It is as if everything movie about the Italian mob needs to have some character called Sonny.

The main character is not a gangster in this case, but rather a police officer working as a long term undercover agent to infiltrate the mob and eventually bringing them down. This character is played by Depp while Al Pacino is the first gangster that decides to trust him and include him in the mafia world.

As he spends more and more time hanging out with these gangsters his personality begins to change. This is a person with a normal wife and 3 kids so it is not like he didn't have some responsibilities besides working for the police. But I guess spending so much time as an undercover officer can really change the mind of any person.

The performances from the cast felt authentic for the most part. There is a lot of drama, and not that much violence except for just 2 bloody scenes. It also has a scene where the dialogue felt like taken out of a Fargo movie/series. The undercover officer is asked a silly question about a phrase and its different meanings and then he explains that using different tones to indicate the different meanings of the same phrase. It goes like this:

    - "What's forget about it?" - Forget about it" is, like, if you agree with someone, you know, like "Raquel Welch is one great piece of ass. Forget about it!" But then, if you disagree, like "A Lincoln is better than a Cadillac? Forget about it!" You know? But then, it's also like if something's the greatest thing in the world, like, "Minghia! Those peppers! Forget about it!" But it's also like saying "Go to hell!" too. Like, you know, like "Hey Paulie, you got a one-inch pecker?" and Paulie says "Forget about it!" Sometimes it just means "Forget about it." Source

The most intense scenes are when the viewer thinks the undercover agent is going to be exposed. Since he spends so much time with these gangsters there were several situations when his true nature was almost discovered. This would have resulted in a monstrous death for him. In some cases, he even had to sacrifice his own humanity and probably his good conscience in order to remain undercover.

If you like gangster movies make sure to watch this film and try to appreciate it without comparing it to the masterpieces. Have in mind this flick provides a different perspective to pretty much everything because this is the story of a person who infiltrates the mafia instead of being an actual member of the mafia. It has some intense moments, especially for those that don't know the real-life story and how it ended. It was a good watch for me.

    The best

    • It is based on a real-life story which makes everything you see on the screen much more meaning full.
    • There are 2 great actors who gave good performances although this is not their best movie.

    The worst

    • When comparing it to some well-known masterpieces of the same genre, Donnie Brasco can be seen as an inferior product but it is an excellent film nonetheless.
