Doom movies don't usually get good reviews, they are usually branded as bad and failures, opinions that have their own weight, however I can differ a little bit since despite not being a standout movie for being the adaptation of a famous video game it's not that bad. To put it in context, Doom focuses on the survival of humanity against beings superior in power and technology, that is the general emphasis of the original story, humanity struggling to survive the judgment imposed by these aliens.
I decided to watch the movie with my daughter who is my faithful companion in front of the screen, we both enjoyed it and talked a lot about it, it was very funny and exciting due to the unexpected ending, I will talk about it later, for now I will focus on the development of the plot.
It all begins with humanity in an advanced period, living on other planets is possible thanks to technology and because of that there are space bases on Mars and other parts of the universe, as the main character is Lieutenant Joan Dark, which has committed an act of treason by letting a criminal escape, something she did because she thought she could catch him later, but that did not happen, in the military world insubordination is punished, so she is put in cryo-sleep for a certain time and once awakened she is sent along with her platoon to a base on Mars as punishment.
This incident marks a tension in the platoon from the beginning of the film, her comrades detest her because of the punishment and pretend not to obey her, but the Captain declares that the chain of command has to be maintained no matter what has happened. The base on Mars has the reputation of being the worst of all, those who are sent there are practically thrown away from Earth for a long time, it is a way of teaching them the consequences of insubordination.
Las películas de Doom no suelen tener buenas críticas, por lo general son tildadas de malas y fracasos, opiniones que tienen su propio peso, sin embargo puedo diferir un poco ya que a pesar de no ser una película resaltante para ser la adaptación de un famoso videojuego no esta tan mal. Para ponernos en contexto, Doom se enfoca en la supervivencia de la humanidad contra seres superiores en poder y tecnología, ese es el énfasis general de la historia original, la humanidad luchando para sobrevivir al juicio impuesto por estos alienígenas.
La película decidí verla con mi hija quien es mi fiel acompañante frente a la pantalla, ambos la disfrutamos y conversamos bastante al respecto, fue muy divertido y emocionante debido al final inesperado, más adelante hablare sobre él, por ahora me enfocare en el desarrollo de la trama.
Todo comienza con la humanidad en un periodo avanzado, vivir en otros planetas es posible gracias a la tecnología y debido a eso hay bases espaciales en Marte y en otras partes del universo, como personaje principal está la teniente Joan Dark, la cual ha cometido un acto de traición al dejar escapar a un criminal, algo que hizo porque pensaba que lo podría atrapar más adelante, pero eso no ocurrió, en el mundo militar la insubordinación es castigada, por lo que es puesta en crio sueño por cierto tiempo y una vez despierta la envían juntamente con su pelotón a una base en Marte como castigo.
Este incidente marca una tensión en el pelotón desde el inicio de la película, sus compañeros la detestan a causa del castigo y pretenden no obedecerla, pero el Capitán declara que la cadena de mando se ha de mantener sin importar que haya sucedido. La base en Marte tiene la reputación de ser la peor de todas, quienes son enviados allí son prácticamente desechados de la tierra por un buen tiempo, es una forma de enseñarles las consecuencias de la insubordinación.
On Mars the base is in charge of Dr. Malcolm Betruger who is a mastermind and is recognized worldwide because of his discoveries, his mission there is somewhat hidden from the rest of the earth, this doctor is officially working with his team on the third planet of the solar system in order to create a portal that allows the transfer of matter instantly between the two planets, but in the background there is something more sinister that only Malcolm Betruger is looking for and will be revealed later in the story.
When they activate the portal for the first time they transfer a man from Earth to Mars and everyone is happy to see him but a few seconds later the man begins to show signs of transformation in his body and personality, so the operation is declared a failure. Doctor Malcolm decides not to accept the decision and some time later he tries to reactivate the portal volunteering himself to go through it, when he does it he apparently succeeds and everyone is excited and happy about what happened, but moments later that joy turns into despair because of what the doctor brings with him.
Up to this point the plot becomes a constant suspense, the lieutenant's crew arrives on Mars and receive no response from the base, so they assume that something has happened, and indeed it has. When they enter the base they notice that it is desolate, they find no one and split up to find the doctors and the rest of the staff, to their surprise they see some of them dead in a grotesque way, based on that they become alert and communicate with each other. It turns out that Dr. Malcolm brought with him a plague and another civilization, "the Sumerians" who according to him were the first inhabitants of the earth and want to regain their place.
En Marte la base está a cargo del doctor Malcolm Betruger quien es una mente maestra y es reconocido a nivel mundial a causa de sus descubrimientos, su misión allí es en cierto modo oculta al resto de la tierra, este doctor de manera oficial está trabajando con su equipo en el tercer planeta del sistema solar con la finalidad de crear un portal que permita el traslado de la materia de forma instantánea entre ambos planetas, pero en el fondo hay algo más siniestro que solamente Malcolm Betruger está buscando y se nos revelara más adelante en la historia.
Cuando activan el portal por primera vez trasladan a un hombre desde la tierra a Marte y todos al verlo se alegran pero unos segundos después el hombre comienza a mostrar signos de transformación en su cuerpo y personalidad, por lo que se declara la operación un fracaso. El doctor Malcolm decide no aceptar la decisión y tiempo después procura reactivar el portal ofreciéndose el mismo como voluntario para atravesarlo, cuando lo hace aparentemente lo logra y todos emocionados se alegran por lo sucedido, pero momentos después esa algarabía se transforma en desesperación debido a lo que el doctor trae con él.
Hasta este punto la trama se vuelve un suspenso constante, la tripulación de la teniente llega a Marte y no reciben respuesta alguna de la base, por lo que asumen que algo ha pasado, y en efecto es así. Cuando ingresan a la base notan que esta desolada, no encuentran a nadie y se dividen para dar con los doctores y el resto del personal, para su sorpresa ven a algunos de ellos muertos de una forma grotesca, en base a eso se ponen alerta y se comunican entre sí. Resulta que el doctor Malcolm trajo consigo una plaga y otra civilización, “los sumerios” quienes según el fueron los primeros habitantes de la tierra y desean recuperar su lugar.
The base becomes a battlefield but the humans do not understand what is happening, they fight against strange beings that eat human viscera, later they realize that they were the base staff transformed into something else, when they manage to rescue the doctor he tells them some of the information in order to gain their trust, but later shows his true face and mortally wounding his assistant who suspected him manages to escape from the military.
At this point only the lieutenant and a doctor are alive, the rest of the crew has died, the mission becomes a disaster and becomes survival, Joan Dark gets more powerful weapons that help him against the Sumerians, but this becomes ineffective against the doctor who had already modified his body with Sumerian technology, he could not die and was only in charge of executing the orders of the invaders. Still on Mars Joan is thrown into the portal and reaches the Sumerian world, there she fights for her life and manages to open a portal to Earth, when she enters it surprisingly works and escapes certain death.
Unfortunately for her and for all humanity the doctors who work there do not know anything about what happened, but seeing her arrive through the portal they assume that Dr. Malcolm is successful so they decide to open the portal again without knowing what awaits them, Joan tries to stop them but they think she is hallucinating and shoot her a tranquilizer, so while she loses her strength she observes and hears the cries of despair of all those present when the Sumerians invade the earth.
In this way we have an unexpected ending, my daughter observes me surprised to see how in the end evil won, and much more when we are accustomed to observe the victory of good over evil. All in all it is an interesting movie, there is not much filler, it quickly gets into action and the viewer does not have much to think about, just relax and enjoy the annihilation.
La base se vuelve un campo de batalla pero los humanos no entienden que está pasando, pelean contra unos seres extraños que comen vísceras humanas, más adelante se dan cuenta que eran el personal de la base transformados en algo más, cuando logran rescatar al doctor este les dice parte de la información con la finalidad de ganar su confianza, pero más adelante muestra su verdadera cara e hiriendo de muerte a su asistente que sospechaba de él logra escapar de los militares.
En este punto solo la teniente y un doctor están con vida, el resto de la tripulación ha muerto, la misión se vuelve un desastre y se convierte en supervivencia, Joan Dark consigue unas armas más potentes que le ayudan contra los sumerios, pero esta se vuelve ineficiente contra el doctor que ya había modificado su cuerpo con la tecnología sumeria, no podía morir y solo se encargaba de ejecutar las ordenes de los invasores. Aun en Marte Joan es lanzada dentro del portal y llega al mundo sumerio, allí lucha por su vida y logra abrir un portal hasta la tierra, cuando lo ingresa sorpresivamente funciona y escapa de una muerte segura.
Lamentablemente para ella y para toda la humanidad los doctores que allí trabajan no saben nada de lo ocurrido, pero al verla llegar por el portal asumen que el doctor Malcolm tiene éxito por lo que deciden abrir nuevamente el portal sin saber lo que les espera, Joan intenta detenerlos pero piensan que esta alucinando y le disparan un tranquilizante, así que mientras pierde sus fuerzas observa y escucha los gritos de desesperación de todos los presentes cuando los sumerios invaden la tierra.
De esta forma tenemos un final inesperado, mi hija me observa sorprendida de ver como al final el mal venció, y mucho más cuando estamos acostumbrados a observar la victoria del bien sobre el mal. En resumidas cuentas es una película interesante, no hay mucho relleno, rápidamente se entra en acción y el espectador no tiene mucho que pensar, solo debe relajarse y disfrutar de la aniquilación.
