I do not know the exact reason, but the series and period films I love, perhaps because they allow us to see a little more of some events, fashions, behaviors, customs and more of years in which we were not present, we know that not always fit 100% of what happened, but it is interesting to see how were the customs of other times, so a few weeks ago I started watching a series titled.

    Downton Abbey

This British series focuses on the life or part of the life of the Crawley family mainly those living in Downton Abbey in the county of Yorkshire, this series introduces us to the life of this family after the loss of the heir to the title of Earl of Grantham, in the wreck of the Titanic, as the current Earl has three daughters and they can not inherit the title.

Thus, the Earl and those closest to him begin to investigate who would be the next heir to the title or if his eldest daughter could inherit. Thus, a distant cousin turns out to be the next heir and so begin the changes for the whole family.

Now, being a series with six seasons and two movies, it's practically impossible to share a bit more of the plot, but it focuses on a point of no return to the old or where the old ways must adapt to the growing modernity or die. I loved that they also shared with us the way of life where there were butlers, footmen, maids, cooks, chauffeurs, ladies-in-waiting, valets, among others.

The series shows us not only the history of the family, but also that of the members of the servants, their struggles, how some manage to stop being servants and overcome and fight for others in the future to have more opportunities to study, in addition to telling us a little of their personal lives.

It is interesting to see how the Crawley family in one way or another supports their staff, some more than others, as there are some characters more sweet, supportive and empathetic than others, but with their actions they influence the rest of the family.

Something that caught my attention was the relationship between two of the three sisters, Mary and Edith, the eldest and second daughter respectively, both educated as daughters of counts by Governesses to be ladies in every sense of the word, but between them there is a terrible relationship, Mary being the eldest and pretty always seeks ways to ridicule and minimize her sister, who also feels less favored and is jealous of her sister.

Both treat each other very badly and the worst thing is that I rarely saw their parents do anything about it. It is normal for siblings to fight, but I believe that parents as guides, even as adult children, should call for harmony and togetherness.

I particularly hated Mary she was a stuffy woman who was complicated about everything and nothing and when she really should have thought about the consequences she didn't, besides it bothered me how poncey and cruel she was with her sister, only at the end she had some empathy with her after Edith put her in her place.

All the actors do a great job and it would be difficult to mention each one, but I loved the character of Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham, played by Maggie Smith, who is one of the central characters, a snooty and refined English lady who often says more with her expressions than with her words, besides being one of the characters whose witty remarks add moments of humor to the series.

Another character that I liked the most was Charles Carson, the chief butler, a refined English butler who puts his masters before himself, comes from a family of butlers and is very demanding with the staff of the house, especially with the male, because he is directly in charge of them.

It is important to note that according to an article I read above, part, I do not know how much of the plot of the series was used to share English historical events, that is interesting to see how they dressed, etiquette, fashions, as they mediate the crockery, cutlery, the three glasses in short, even as they resist change, is a series that I loved, at times it became a little slow, but always had interesting moments that kept me entertained and motivated me to look for the two films that were made after the end of the series. I give this series filmed in excellent scenery an 8 out of 10.

    A bientôt,

    Florence

  3. Downton Abbey, A Taste Of Historical Drama@kemmyb1916d

    Screenshot_20210330_140816.jpg

Hello Hivers! Do we have period drama lovers in the house like me? I am an avid period drama fan and have watched a lot of this series.

Period dramas are movies or television series set in a particular historical period and characterized by the use of costumes, sets, and props that are typical or evocative of the era.

I love this kind of films because I get to live (in my imagination of course) in the era, watch how their lifestyle was and some of the challenges they faced at that time vis-a-vis our present time. I have no idea why I like them, maybe because of my love for literature classics.

Downton Abbey is a British period drama television series created and written by Julian Fellows and directed by Michael Engler. Julian Fellows is a brilliant screenwriter and I try not to miss any of his movies or series.

This particular series ran for close to seven years with extra Christmas episodes. I love this series so much that I have binge-watched it four times. I make it a yearly ritual and hopefully will watch it again sometime later this year.

Downton Abbey, a drama/romance, focused on the aristocratic Crawley family in the early 20th century from 1912 to 1926. The Crawley family consisted of the lord of the Estate, Earl Robert Crawley, his wife, Countess Grantham, his mother, Dowager Countess, and his three daughters. They are the ones who stayed 'upstairs' in the Estate while their servants stayed 'downstairs'.

    Screenshot_20210330_140649.jpg

The series revolved around these characters and on the challenges the British people faced which is based on their status or class in the society.

I enjoy living in the fantasy of how life seemed easy and fun for those of the upper class then but I must admit that I am glad things have changed a lot in our time. Though class segregation still abounds in our present society, it's however based on the economy.

    Screenshot_20210330_140704.jpg

Another issue predominant in that time and dwelt upon in the series is inheritance. The wealth of the family goes to the surviving eldest male child. In this series, the lord of the house, Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham had three daughters but no son. The issue of who the heir would be brought up a lot of drama within the family.

The Grantham family sought to marry off the daughters to wealthy, upper class citizens but did not completely succeed. The first daughter, Lady Mary had different suitors but eventually settled for a country solicitor who became the heir to the Grantham Estate until his death.

Another of the daughters settled down with the family chauffeur and you can imagine how that went with the family!

The series further dwelt on how the Grantham family survived the first world War, Spanish flu and other issues.

Keep in mind that the characters in this series were real and the script was slightly tailored to their life. So is the Grantham estate located in St. James's Square and built in 1849.

I could go on and on but I would recommend you watch this series to get an idea of how life was starting 1912 in Britain. There is also a lot of humor in the series to make it a fun watch.

Thank you for visiting my blog!
