Elf

The other day I was watching a documentary on Netflix called "The Movies that Made us" That told us the story of how several of the modern classics were gestated in the cinema, films of the stature of Ghostbusters, Back to The Future or Halloween that marked a before and after in the industry. One of the chapters that captured my intention most quickly was the one dedicated to "Elf," the now iconic Christmas movie released in 2003, directed by Jon Favreau and starring the excellent Will Ferrell.

I mention all this because several of the ideas that I am going to present below are partially inspired by The Movies That Made Us and at the same time I consider it to be an excellent series that anyone who appreciates the seventh art will enjoy.

When I think of Elf and try to synthesize the reasons why I enjoy her, my mind always circulates around the same word: Innocence. For me, it is a work that, despite being presented with humility and simplicity, hides in its guts a series of thematic and argumentative elements that give it a lot of depth and elevate it to another level, making us reconnect with a part of us that seems to be lost when growing up. and mature.

Why in the title of this post do I insist on saying that Elf is the perfect Christmas movie for those who don't like Christmas? Because far from excluding with elitism those who do not embrace the Christmas spirit or - worse yet - force them to enjoy these dates, he knows how to intelligently contrast all the different perspectives that we could have.

As many will know, in Elf we follow the story of Buddy, a newborn baby who ends up in a kind of orphanage, his biological father is unaware of his existence and his mother passed away, on Christmas Eve little Buddy has an encounter with Santa Claus and He decides to sneak into his infinite bag of toys, ending up at the North Pole where he spends most of his life trying to grow up as just another elf.

When Buddy discovers that he is not a real elf but a human, following the advice of Santa and his adoptive father (An elf) he decides to walk to New York to meet his real father.

In what seems like a premise worthy of a children's Christmas story (Which is totally intentional) inspired by classics like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer by Rankin / Bass (Something that shows in a considerable portion of his aesthetic elements), Buddy is constantly faces our reality, running into other human series that embrace "Christmas" with a little more cynicism than expected in the search for his father.

For me, the true appeal of the film is not only in its warm visual presentation, nor in the fun of seeing Will Ferrell making disasters on the streets of New York, but in how his childlike nature contrasts with our real world.

Each Buddy interaction with adults is meticulously organized to serve as a kind of mirror to the viewer, a mirror in which we clearly observe our lost innocence and how we have left behind this childlike ability to have faith.

Elf can be presented as a film extremely based on its own fantasies, but things go much further than that, it is a global but subtle message that can connect with us beyond our beliefs.

El otro día estaba viendo un documental en Netflix llamado “The Movies that Made us” Que nos contaba la historia de como se gestaron varios de los clásicos modernos en el cine, películas de la talla de Ghostbusters, Back to The Future o Halloween que marcaron un antes y un después en la industria. Uno de los capítulos que captó mi intención con mayor rapidez fue aquel dedicado a “Elf”, la ahora icónica película de navidad estrenada en 2003, dirigida por Jon Favreau y protagonizada por el excelente Will Ferrell.

Menciono todo esto porque varias de las ideas que voy a exponer a continuación están parcialmente inspiradas por The Movies That Made Us y al mismo tiempo considero que es una serie excelente que cualquier persona que aprecie el séptimo arte disfrutará.

Cuando pienso en Elf y trato de sintetizar las razones por las cuales la disfruto mi mente siempre circula alrededor de la misma palabra: Inocencia. Para mi, es una obra que a pesar de presentarse con humildad y simpleza esconde en sus entrañas una serie de elementos temáticos y arguméntales que le dan mucha profundidad y la elevan a otro nivel, haciéndonos reconectar con una parte de nosotros que pareciera perderse al crecer y madurar.

¿Por qué en el título de este post me empeño a decir que Elf es la película de navidad perfecta para aquellos a los que no les gusta la navidad? Porque lejos de excluir con elitismo a aquellos que no abrazan el espíritu navideño o -Peor aún- forzarlos a disfrutar estas fechas, sabe contrastar inteligentemente todas las distintas perspectivas que pudiésemos tener.

Como muchos sabrán, en Elf seguimos la historia de Buddy, un bebé recién nacido que termina en una especie de orfanato, su padre biológico desconoce su existencia y su madre falleció, en la víspera de Navidad el pequeño Buddy tiene un encuentro con Santa Claus y decide escabullírse en su infinita bolsa de juguetes, terminando en el polo norte en donde pasa la mayoría de su vida tratando de criarse como un elfo más.

Cuando Buddy descubre que no es un elfo real sino un humano, siguiendo los consejos de Santa y su padre adoptivo (Un elfo) decide caminar hasta a New York para conocer a su padre real.

En lo que parece una premisa digna de un cuento infantil de navidad (Lo cuál es totalmente intencional) inspirado de clásicos como Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer por Rankin/Bass (Algo que se nota en una porción considerable de sus elementos estéticos), Buddy se enfrenta constamente a nuestra realidad, topándose con otros series humanos que abrazan la “navidad” con un poco más de cinismo de lo esperado en la búsqueda de su padre.

Para mi el verdadero atractivo del filme no está solo en su cálida presentación Visual, ni en lo entretenido de ver a Will Ferrell haciendo desastres por las calles de New York, sino en el como su naturaleza infantil contrasta con nuestro mundo real.

Cada interacción de Buddy con los adultos está meticulosamente organizada para servir como una especie de espejo al espectador, un espejo en donde observamos con claridad nuestra inocencia perdida y el cómo hemos dejado atrás esta habilidad infantil para tener fé.

Elf puede presentarse como una película extremadamente sustentada en sus propias fantasías, pero las cosas van mucho más allá de eso, se trata de un mensaje global pero sutil que puede conectar con nosotros más allá de nuestras creencias.
