Incluso en el cine existirán los debates, ¿no es así? Quizás para alguien una película sea buena y para otra persona no. Pero… ¿Qué sucede cuando dos largometrajes o series de televisión gozan de una misma popularidad? Probablemente habrá personas que preferirán a una más que a la otra, sin embargo, el choque de las opiniones puede conjugar una inmensa batalla entre ambas franquicias; todos tenemos un juicio distinto cuando de subjetividad se trata, aunque en un plano más objetivo, las cosas dan un giro de trescientos sesenta grados.
¿Y por qué hablo de esto?
Hace poco me encontré atrapado en un debate poco usual. Mientras charlaba con mis hermanos y unos cuantos amigos, surgió el tema de Elite y Euphoria, dos series de televisión con algo en común: las adversidades, obsesiones, adicciones y obstáculos en la juventud. Entre dimes y diretes surgió la pregunta: ¿Cuál de las dos es mejor? Todos eligieron un bando, incluso los que no habían visto una de las dos series. Yo me reservé mis opiniones (soy muy malo para debatir) y, tras una larga noche de meditación, me sinceré con ambas historias sin juzgarlas pues, de alguna forma u otra, tienen premisas distintas.
Así es, considero que ambas series de Televisión tienen sus encantos, no obstante, es imposible ignorar la realidad televisiva, esa que apunta a que habrán historias mucho más complejas que otras. Ahora bien, ya que Euphoria y Elite son series con temáticas “parecidas”, puedo yo analizar, según mi humilde criterio, cuál tiene más potencial. Por un lado está el grupo de estudiantes que, entre conspiraciones y asesinatos, deberán sortear la dura cultura de una juventud sin limitantes. Y por el otro, encontramos la estrafalaria noción de las adiciones con entornos oscuros, pero hermosos.
Entonces, ¿Euphoria o Elite? Intentaré ser lo más equilibrado posible al momento de destacar cada historia… solo me queda decir: ¡Que gane la mejor!
1 – Elite

Esta fue la primera serie de temática juvenil que mis humildes ojos disfrutaron. La verdad, nunca había visto tanta locura, sexo e intriga en un mismo escenario. Por donde miraba había o una rivalidad, o un choque de identidad, o la popularidad provista del dinero. Para ser una serie hispanoamericana, se parecía mucho a los royos norteamericanos: un colegio lujoso, gente guapa y loca, padres mafiosos o con terribles secretos de corrupción. ¡Vaya! ¡Una psicosis moderna de la encubierta sociedad!
Lo que me enganchó de Elite fue el choque de culturas, sí, porque los hay. Okay, un poco de cliché no está mal a veces, y en este sentido me gustó como se diseñaron algunos triángulos amorosos, apuntando, desde luego, al inusual juego del “ganar-ganar”. Las tramas van orientadas a mostrarnos esas conspiraciones entre sus protagonistas, ya sea por el amor de uno de los involucrados, o la razón de la justicia que nunca afecta a los poderosos. Los débiles son entonces aquellos que librarán la batalla contra la “élite”, desafiando sus reglas e imponiendo las suyas… ¿encantador no?

En un plano juvenil las élites son más abstractas; puedo decir incluso que los conocemos bajo el nombre de “los más populares del colegio”. Si analizamos el punto de partida de esta historia, ¿qué encontramos? Al principio tres chicos becados que intentarán encontrar su lugar entre aquellos que los consideran escorias. Más allá del dinero y la pobreza, se inmiscuye el amor en facetas inusuales; todo es amar para saciar el deseo o cumplir una venganza, y ni hablar de las relaciones tóxicas. Temáticas de jóvenes adultos redundan en la historia para armar, como última estocada, la tragedia.

Y es en este punto donde Elite saca su arma más fuerte: tenemos un cúmulo de personajes para amar u odiar, o ambas opciones a la vez. No hay una moral definida, ni tampoco indicios de relaciones o amistades fieles. Abunda el engaño, las trampas y las traiciones. En un episodio ves a dos personajes prometiéndose amor y en los siguientes ya se han montado los cuernos. Temporada tras temporada la esencia se mantiene con el súbito trasfondo del encubrimiento. Aparece el asesinato, y luego el conflicto que como un rompecabezas ha de armarse según las decisiones de sus protagonistas. ¿Fidelidad o Traición? ¿Amistad o venganza? La decisión no siempre es la correcta.
Hablemos del desarrollo argumental
Si algo aprendí estudiando el libro de Syd Field fue que toda buena historia debe tener esa chispa única y trascendental, algo fuera de lo común… algo capaz de transmitir emociones. Diré que Elite es una serie de televisión que, al menos es este punto, logró conectar conmigo. Como escritor siento la necesidad de que mis historias sean impredecibles, quizás un poco retorcidas en cuanto a la moral se trata. En este sentido Elite mueve sus fichas más atrevidas para esbozar el espíritu de la juventud moderna, esa que no respeta las reglas o hace las suyas.
La acción dramática se mantiene en un mismo escenario de principio a fin: los estudiantes nuevos, su necesidad de adaptarse, el conflicto que eclosiona tras el asesinato de alguno de ellos, etcétera. De las cinco temporadas solo he visto cuatro, y de dichas cuatro me gustaron las primeras tres. A partir de la siguiente el elenco (al menos la mayoría) se despidió de la serie, y entre ellos mi personaje favorito: Carla; una mujer tan bella como despreciable, y aun así te enamoras de la sensualidad que desborda.

Al final, el conflicto que toma relevancia es el ocasionado por la muerte de Marina (sigo estando sad) y la sucesiva trama que se ocultó tras Polo. Tres temporadas gloriosas al menos en algunos aspectos, y que cierran el hilo de la pérdida con otra pérdida, como un ciclo que vuelve al punto inicial y se repite. Al menos después de aquí las cosas se vuelven pesadas y repetitivas, algo que noté en la cuarta temporada y que muestra la falta de ideas por parte de los creadores de la historia. Pareciera que siempre, ¡siempre! Debe morir alguien o alguien debe ser culpable de algo para que las cosas tomen sentido en Elite, y esto, al menos a mí, no me gusta en lo absoluto.
2 – Euphoria

Uy, ¡Euphoria! Suspiro con tan solo escribir el nombre de la serie. La verdad, no hubiera conocido esta grandiosa historia de no ser por uno de mis hermanos, el cual, al ver mi gusto por Elite, me prometió algo mucho más “Fresco” y “Original”. Hablar de Euphoria es mencionar a Rue, ¡vaya chica! Una adicta sin remedio que, en conflicto con la vida, intenta llevar una “tranquila” armonía entre las drogas y el amor. Lo distinto es que la raíz de esta serie de televisión no radica en los problemas escolares, o en el choque cultural o de clases sociales. ¡Aquí hay una mezcla de todo! La belleza no radica en el dinero o las “élites”, más bien, en la cruda realidad de la juventud salvaje: sus sueños, sus obsesiones, sus miedos, y pare usted de contar.

¿Qué me enganchó de Euphoria? Pues su capacidad para romper con los tabús y mostrárnoslos como algo tan cotidiano y, ¿hermoso? ¡Sí! ¡Hermoso! Siendo sincero, no había visto una historia tan cruda e impactante, y a la vez tan adictiva. No sé por qué, pero Euphoria es una obra maestra del martirio juvenil, de la realidad que está ahí visible aunque no queramos verla; no se trata de un colegio o sus estudiantes, ¡para nada! Lo relevante en Euphoria son las luchas internas, esas que se ocultan en lo profundo del remordimiento y nunca tienen fin.
¿Qué joven no tiene la necesidad de ser amado? ¿Quién no sufre por la pérdida irreparable?

No, a pesar de que Euphoria toma el tema de las drogas, no se trata únicamente de una chica drogadicta. Hay adicciones de todos los tipos, incluso aquellas que no parecen adicciones. Acá hay más que un grupo de chicos y chicas que se pelean entre ellos para ver quien tiene más popularidad o beneficios; y luego está el convincente trato de las aflicciones que inundan la edad viril: la desnudez, la sexualidad y en última estancia la violencia. La amistad, en este sentido, es una parte clave de esta serie de televisión… aunque a veces tenga sus impases (véase el caso de Maddy & Cassie, LOL).

Hablemos del desarrollo argumental
En primer lugar tenemos a Rue, la narradora predilecta detrás de toda la historia. ¿Cuál es el paradigma? Una chica que ha tenido problemas desde que nació del vientre de su madre, y no precisamente problemas mentales o enfermedades mortales. Ella es diferente, o al menos lo aparenta; no tiene además malos padres o es parte de la pobreza extrema, digamos que Rue tiene lo necesario para ser feliz. Aquí el primer gran impacto de esta obra: cualquiera puede caer en las drogas, solo debe estar a merced de la soledad interna.
La historia no se basa en la superación de Rue, más bien, nos enseña la cruda realidad de las adicciones: recaídas y sufrimiento, no solo para el adicto, pues de alguna forma tanto los familiares como los amigos también se ven arrastrados.
Dos temporadas han sido suficientes para dibujar un escenario pocas veces visto. Los toques de humor negro le dan una chispa sin precedentes a Rue y sus amigos, ¡vamos! Nada puede ser perfecto sin un poco de comedia en los temas más “complejos”. Aun así, no puedo ocultar lo demoledora que ha sido Euphoria para mí… cito el ejemplo de la madre de Rue, un rostro que se ha quedado grabado en mi memoria, ¿la razón? Ella representa el otro rostro de las drogas, ese que nadie en su vida quiere conocer…

Entre la primera y segunda temporada me quedo con la segunda. Guao, ¡cuántas emociones palpitaron en las desventuras de Rue! Su recaída fue dolorosa y alarmante, a tal punto de volverse estremecedora. Eso es lo bueno de Euphoria: siempre hay algo nuevo que ofrecer. No hay círculos cuyas líneas vuelven al mismo punto, todo es una línea curva se cruza y cruza hasta doblar los caminos. Si en Elite no superé la muerte de Marina, en Euphoria no superaré la de Ash… :`-(
Entonces, ¿Cuál es mejor?
Como lo dije al iniciar este posts, tanto Elite como Euphoria tienen sus encantos. No obstante, hay una en particular que logró eclipsar mi corazón, y sí, les hablo de:
EUPHORIA
La razón es que esta serie de televisión toca un tema común en un escenario único. A diferencia de Elite, el conflicto o se basa solo en relaciones tóxicas en un colegio prestigioso, ¡para nada! Esto no se trata de la vida desaforada en la preparatoria, más bien, la obra de
Sam Levinson explora la complejidad de la visión joven: sus sueños, sus caídas y burradas, la presión a la que están sometidos, las obsesiones e inseguridades… y obviamente, las adicciones emocionales.
Aun así, hay espacio en mi corazón para ambas historias. Hasta cierto punto la decisión fue difícil, y obviamente no tiene por qué ser la correcta. Por eso, los invito a dejarme sus opiniones en los comentarios. ¿Cuál de las dos les gustó más? Esta batalla sin duda, apenas está comenzando ;-).

Even in the cinema there will be debates, right? Perhaps for someone a movie is good and for another person it is not. But… What happens when two feature films or television series enjoy the same popularity? There will probably be people who prefer one more than the other, however, the clash of opinions can combine an immense battle between both franchises; we all have a different judgment when it comes to subjectivity, although on a more objective plane, things take a turn of three hundred and sixty degrees.
And why am I talking about this?
I recently found myself caught up in an unusual debate. While chatting with my brothers and a few friends, the subject of Elite and Euphoria came up, two television series with one thing in common: the adversities, obsessions, addictions and obstacles of youth. Between dimes and diretes the question arose: Which of the two is better? Everyone chose a side, even those who had not seen one of the two series. I kept my opinions to myself (I'm very bad at debating) and, after a long night of meditation, I was honest with both stories without judging them because, in one way or another, they have different premises.
That's right, I consider that both television series have their charms, however, it is impossible to ignore television reality, the one that suggests that there will be much more complex stories than others. Now, since Euphoria and Elite are series with "similar" themes, I can analyze, in my humble opinion, which one has more potential. On one side is the group of students who, between conspiracies and murders, must overcome the harsh culture of a youth without limitations. And on the other, we find the quirky notion of additions with dark, but beautiful environments.
So Euphoria or Elite? I will try to be as balanced as possible when highlighting each story… I can only say: May the best win!
1 – Elite

This was the first youth-themed series that my humble eyes enjoyed. The truth is, I had never seen so much madness, sex and intrigue on the same stage. Everywhere he looked there was either a rivalry, or an identity clash, or popularity provided by money. To be a Hispanic-American series, it was very similar to the North American royos: a luxurious school, beautiful and crazy people, mafia parents or with terrible secrets of corruption. Oh! A modern psychosis of covert society!
What got me hooked on Elite was the clash of cultures, yes, because there are. Okay, a little cliché is not bad sometimes, and in this sense I liked how some love triangles were designed, aiming, of course, at the unusual game of "win-win". The plots are oriented to show us those conspiracies between their protagonists, either for the love of one of those involved, or for the reason of justice that never affects the powerful. The weak then are those who will wage battle against the “elite”, defying their rules and imposing their own… charming isn't it?

On a youth level, the elites are more abstract; I can even say that we know them under the name of "the most popular of the school". If we analyze the starting point of this story, what do we find? At first, three scholarship boys who will try to find their place among those who consider them scumbags. Beyond money and poverty, love intrudes in unusual facets; everything is to love to satisfy desire or fulfill revenge, not to mention toxic relationships. Themes of young adults redound in the story to put together, as a final thrust, the tragedy.

And it is at this point where Elite draws its strongest weapon: we have a host of characters to love or hate, or both options at the same time. There is no definite morality, nor is there any indication of faithful relationships or friendships. Deception, traps and betrayals abound. In one episode you see two characters promising each other love and in the following ones the horns have already been mounted. Season after season the essence remains with the sudden undercurrent of cover-up. The murder appears, and then the conflict that, like a puzzle, has to be put together according to the decisions of its protagonists. Loyalty or betrayal? Friendship or revenge? The decision is not always the right one.
Let's talk about plot development
If I learned anything studying Syd Field's book, it was that every good story must have that unique and transcendental spark, something out of the ordinary... something capable of transmitting emotions. I will say that Elite is a television series that, at least to this point, managed to connect with me. As a writer I feel the need for my stories to be unpredictable, maybe a little twisted in terms of morality. In this sense, Elite moves its most daring pieces to outline the spirit of modern youth, the one that does not respect the rules or makes their own.
The dramatic action remains on the same stage from beginning to end: the new students, their need to adapt, the conflict that erupts after the murder of one of them, etc. Of the five seasons I have only seen four, and of those four I liked the first three. From the following the cast (at least most) said goodbye to the series, and among them my favorite character: Carla; a woman as beautiful as despicable, and yet you fall in love with the sensuality that overflows.

In the end, the conflict that becomes relevant is the one caused by the death of Marina (I'm still sad) and the successive plot that was hidden behind Polo. Three glorious seasons at least in some aspects, and that close the thread of loss with another loss, like a cycle that returns to the starting point and repeats itself. At least after here things get heavy and repetitive, something that I noticed in the fourth season and that shows the lack of ideas on the part of the creators of the story. It seems that always, always! Someone must die or someone must be guilty of something for things to make sense in Elite, and this, at least to me, I do not like at all.
2 – Euphoria

Whoa, Euphoria! I sigh just by writing the name of the series. The truth is, I would not have known this great story if it weren't for one of my brothers, who, seeing my love for Elite, promised me something much more “Fresh” and “Original”. To talk about Euphoria is to mention Rue, what a girl! A hopeless addict who, in conflict with life, tries to bring a "quiet" harmony between drugs and love. The difference is that the root of this television series does not lie in school problems, or in cultural or social class clash. Here is a mix of everything! Beauty does not lie in money or the "elites", rather, in the harsh reality of wild youth: their dreams, their obsessions, their fears, and stop counting.

What got me hooked on Euphoria? Well, her ability to break taboos and show them to us as something so everyday and, beautiful? Yes! Handsome! To be honest, I had not seen a story so raw and shocking, and at the same time so addictive. I don't know why, but Euphoria is a masterpiece of youth martyrdom, of the reality that is there visible even if we don't want to see it; It's not about a school or its students, not at all! What is relevant in Euphoria are the internal struggles, those that are hidden in the depths of remorse and never have an end.
What young person does not have the need to be loved? Who does not suffer from irreparable loss?

No, even though Euphoria takes up the drug theme, she's not just a drug addict girl. There are addictions of all kinds, even those that don't seem like addictions. Here there is more than a group of boys and girls who fight among themselves to see who has more popularity or benefits; and then there is the compelling treatment of the afflictions that pervade manhood: nudity, sexuality, and ultimately violence. Friendship, in this sense, is a key part of this television series... although it sometimes has its impasses (see the case of Maddy & Cassie, LOL).

Let's talk about plot development
First of all we have Rue, the favorite narrator behind the whole story. What is the paradigm? A girl who has had problems since she was born from her mother's womb, and not exactly mental problems or fatal diseases. She is different, or at least she appears to be; she doesn't also have bad parents or she is part of extreme poverty, let's say that Rue has what it takes to be happy. Here is the first great impact of this work: anyone can fall into drugs, they just have to be at the mercy of internal loneliness.
The story is not based on Rue's overcoming, rather, it teaches us the harsh reality of addictions: relapses and suffering, not only for the addict, because in some way both family and friends are also dragged along.
Two seasons have been enough to draw a scenario rarely seen. Touches of dark humor give Rue and her friends an unprecedented spark, come on! Nothing can be perfect without a bit of comedy on the most "complex" topics. Even so, I can't hide how devastating Euphoria has been for me… I cite the example of Rue's mother, a face that has remained etched in my memory, the reason? She represents the other face of drugs, the one that no one in her life wants to know...

Between the first and second seasons I'll stay with the second. Wow, how many emotions throbbed in Rue's misadventures! Her relapse was painful and alarming, to the point of becoming shocking. That's the great thing about Euphoria: there's always something new to offer. There are no circles whose lines return to the same point, everything is a curved line that crosses and crosses until the roads bend. If in Elite I didn't get over Marina's death, in Euphoria I won't get over Ash's… :`-(
So which one is better?
As I said at the beginning of this post, both Elite and Euphoria have their charms. However, there is one in particular that managed to overshadow my heart, and yes, I am talking about:
EUPHORIA
The reason is that this TV series touches on a common theme in a unique setting. Unlike Elite, the conflict is based only on toxic relationships in a prestigious school, for nothing! This is not about the wild life in high school, rather, the work of
Sam Levinson explores the complexity of the young vision: their dreams, their falls and nonsense, the pressure they are subjected to, the obsessions and insecurities... and obviously, the emotional addictions.
Still, there is room in my heart for both stories. To some extent the decision was difficult, and obviously it does not have to be the right one. Therefore, I invite you to leave me your opinions in the comments. Which of the two did you like more? This battle is definitely just beginning ;-).
