Film Analysis | The Platform (2019) #Netflix — Do changes occur spontaneously...? [ENG-ESP]@acont1523d

If you're looking for a sci-fi/thriller movie that will make you think and formulate all kinds of theories about its meaning, The Platform may be for you. It is a Spanish movie released in 2019 and can be found on Netflix. In this post I will try to analyze, from my point of view, what this film tries to convey or make us reflect. Maybe it will differ from other people's point of view, but for that there are the comments and other posts to contrast ideas.

Personally, I have never felt much fascination for Spanish films. I've only liked a few of them. But this one caught my attention because of the synopsis and other people's comments. The film is based on, briefly, a fictional prison and very different from traditional prisons. There are vertical levels with each other and the food comes down from the top level to the lowest level through a central chute, where the prisoners on each level take as much food as they want or can for a few seconds.

I didn't really expect much from this movie at first, but little by little it introduces you to this surreal world represented in a fictitious prison. The characters, another very strong point of this movie, stood out for their roles, especially the man who always repeats the word "obvious".

This film is intended for "the viewer to fill in the gaps in the plot with his or her own theories", according to what is said about it on some websites, because it really gives a lot to think about after watching it. The first thing that comes to mind after watching it is perhaps an attempt to criticize the way food (or wealth) is distributed in society.

It is about a prison with more than 200 levels, in which the prisoners on the upper levels eat well, since they receive the elevator with plenty of food served. It is worth noting that on each level 2 people reside together, and every 30 days everyone is put to sleep by gas, to be moved to another level, apparently at random. This means that one month you can be on level 7 eating quite well, but the next month be on level 193 and receive crumbs of food, even thinking about cannibalism against your own cellmate after a few days without eating almost nothing.

This randomness in the levels perhaps makes us think that this movie represents what would be "normal" in life: one day you can be on top, and be selfish with those below, but another day you can be on the bottom and those above will remember how you behaved when the roles were reversed. This perhaps feeds a cycle, seemingly endless, where those at the top will always eat whatever they want without caring that those at the bottom get nothing. But is it possible for everyone to agree, spontaneously, to eat just enough? Can everyone agree that all prisoners at all levels get enough to eat?

This immediately makes us think of the division between rich and poor, businessmen and workers, powerful and not, some hoarding all the wealth leaving crumbs to the rest. I think it could not be said that this film is a criticism of capitalism or the free market, because we are not talking about wealth created but distributed to all in an imposed way, by an "administration" which we will talk about later. However, everyone will have their own point of view, and that is why there are films of this kind.

This "administration" is a kind of administrative entity that is also a kind of "restaurant" composed of a boss and a group of chefs who cook every day what will be distributed to the prisoners. Plates of food of all kinds are placed on a table-elevator, which descends from top to bottom, stopping at each level for a few minutes. This table is obviously fictitious, since it is "floating" and has no rope or mechanism.

In such a situation, it is obvious that chaos will ensue among the prisoners, who have no choice but to wait daily for the elevator for food, especially on the lower levels where food is scarce or non-existent. It is in these situations that the worst of the human being emerges, when his freedom is restricted. But in the midst of all the chaos, will good and order emerge spontaneously? "Changes never happen spontaneously" was one of the statements of our protagonist.

The "administration", the people in charge of administering or managing the entry of prisoners, apparently ignore or do not care about the reality of the prisoners, who are dying of hunger or violence. They think that "everything is fine down there", to the point that one of the administrators voluntarily enters the prison to try to force the emergence of "spontaneous solidarity" in the midst of so much selfishness in the struggle for the prisoners' survival.

The latter generated the phrase of our protagonist mentioned above. But, apparently, he himself would later prove to be wrong, if we look at it from a certain point of view. He himself executed by his own decision (Free will?) a series of actions that would change the dynamics of the prison. The truth is that as another prisoner of great wisdom (not all succumb to savagery or violence) expressed, the "administration has no conscience of its own". That is to say, nothing can be expected of it, but human beings, from the bottom up, are the ones who must execute the changes.

If we look at this movie from a more "spiritual" point of view, perhaps the change of levels every so often represents reincarnation. It is random which level you will get next, but one thing is clear, your attitude in the new level is conditioned by the level you had before. If you were in a low level, when you are then in a higher level you will believe you "deserve" to eat everything you want, without caring much about those below you.

But what you really have to "rectify" at every opportunity are the decisions or awareness to make, to try to generate a positive change. Perhaps what our protagonist tried to do was not the most appropriate, but he was the only one who tried to do something different, the only one who tried to "think outside the box". Every prisoner is free to go down in the elevator, and no one had dared to go to the bottom. Maybe this decision was not a "spontaneous change", but somehow it was an initiative that generated some change, which we do not really know because the ending is open.

This movie was trending two years ago when the pandemic started, and its "lockdown" theme had a lot of audience interest. It really is a film a bit grotesque in some points, so obviously it is not recommended for children, but it really has a lot of messages and interpretations to give.

Si buscas una película de ciencia ficción y thriller que te haga pensar y formular toda clase de teorías acerca de su significado, El Hoyo puede ser para ti. Es una película española estrenada en el año 2019 y se puede encontrar en Netflix. En esta publicación trataré de analizar, desde mi punto de vista, lo que esta película intenta transmitir o hacernos reflexionar. Quizás difiera del punto de vista de otras personas, pero para ello están los comentarios y otras entradas para contrastar las ideas.

Personalmente, nunca he sentido mucha fascinación por las películas españolas. Solo unas pocas me han llegado a gustar. Pero esta llamó mi atención por la sinopsis que planteaba y los comentarios de otras personas. La película se basa en, resumidamente, una prisión ficticia y muy distinta a las prisiones tradicionales. Existen niveles verticales entre sí y la comida baja desde el nivel superior al más inferior por un conducto central, en donde los prisioneros de cada nivel van tomando toda la comida que quieran o puedan durante unos segundos.

Realmente no esperaba mucho de esta película al principio, pero poco a poco te va introduciendo en ese mundo surrealista representado en una prisión ficticia. Los personajes, otro punto muy fuerte de esta película, destacaron por sus roles, especialmente el señor que siempre repite la palabra "obvio".

Esta película está pensada para que "el espectador rellene los huecos en la trama con sus propias teorías", según tal cual se habla de ella en algunos sitios web, pues realmente da mucho que pensar luego de verla. Lo primero que se nos viene a la mente luego de verla es quizás un intento de crítica a la manera en que se distribuye la comida (o riqueza) en la sociedad.

Se trata de una cárcel de más de 200 niveles, en la cual los prisioneros de los niveles superiores comen bien, puesto que reciben al elevador con mucha comida servida. Cabe destacar que en cada nivel residen 2 personas juntas, y cada 30 días todos son adormecidos mediante gases, para ser cambiados a otro nivel, aparentemente de manera aleatoria. Esto quiere decir que un mes puedes estar en el nivel N°7 comiendo bastante bien, pero el siguiente mes estar en el nivel N°193 y recibir migajas de comida, llegando incluso a pensar en el canibalismo contra tu propio compañero de celda luego de unos días sin comer casi nada.

Esta aleatoriedad en los niveles quizás nos hace pensar que esta película representa lo que sería "normal" en la vida: un día puedes estar arriba, y ser egoísta con los que estén abajo, pero otro día puedes estar abajo y los de arriba recordarán como te comportaste cuando los roles eran contrarios. Esto quizás alimenta un ciclo, aparentemente sin fin, en donde los de arriba siempre comerán todo lo que quieran sin importarles que los de abajo no reciban nada. Pero ¿Es posible que todos se pongan de acuerdo, espontáneamente, en comer sólo lo justo? ¿Se pueden poner todos de acuerdo para que todos los prisioneros de todos los niveles reciban suficiente comida?

Esto nos hace pensar inmediatamente en la división entre ricos y pobres, empresarios y obreros, poderosos y no, unos acaparando toda la riqueza dejando migajas al resto. Pienso que no podría decirse que esta película es una crítica al capitalismo o al libre mercado, porque no estamos hablando de riqueza creada sino distribuida a todos de manera impuesta, por una "administración" de la cual más adelante hablaremos de ella. Sin embargo, cada quien tendrá su punto de vista, y para ello existen este tipo de películas.

Esta "administración" es una especie de ente administrativo que a la vez es una especie de "restaurant" compuesto por un jefe y un conjunto de chefs que cada día cocinan lo que será distribuido a los prisioneros. Se colocan platos de comida de todo tipo en una mesa-elevador, la cual desciende desde arriba hacia abajo, deteniéndose en cada nivel por pocos minutos. Esta mesa es obviamente ficticia, puesto que va "flotando", no tiene ningún tipo de cuerda o mecanismo.

En una situación así, es obvio que surgirá el caos entre los prisioneros, quienes lo único que tienen por hacer es esperar diariamente al elevador por la comida, especialmente en los niveles inferiores en donde la comida escasea o es nula. Es en estas situaciones que surge lo peor del ser humano, cuando su libertad es restringida. Pero en medio de todo el caos ¿Surgirá el bien y el orden espontáneamente? "Los cambios nunca se dan de manera espontánea" fue una de las afirmaciones de nuestro protagonista.

La "administración", las personas encargadas de administrar o gestionar la entrada de prisioneros, aparentemente ignoran o no les importa la realidad de los prisioneros, quienes mueren de hambre o violencia. Ellos, piensan que "todo está bien allí abajo", hasta el punto de que una de las administradoras se adentra voluntariamente en la prisión para intentar forzar el surgimiento de la "solidaridad espontánea" en medio de tanto egoísmo en la lucha por la supervivencia de los prisioneros.

Esto último generó la frase de nuestro protagonista dicha más arriba. Pero, aparentemente, él mismo demostraría más adelante que estaba equivocado, si lo vemos desde cierto punto de vista. Él mismo ejecutó por propia decisión (¿Libre albedrío?) una serie de acciones que cambiarían la dinámica de la prisión. Lo cierto es que tal como expresó otro prisionero de gran sabiduría (no todos sucumben ante el salvajismo o la violencia), la "administración no tiene consciencia propia". Es decir, no se puede esperar nada de ella, sino que los seres humanos, desde abajo para arriba, son los que deben ejecutar los cambios.

Si miramos esta película desde un punto de vista más "espiritual", quizás el cambio de niveles cada cierto tiempo representa la reencarnación. Es aleatorio el nivel que te tocará luego, pero algo está claro, tu actitud en el nuevo nivel está condicionada por el nivel que tenías anteriormente. Si estuviste en un nivel bajo, al estar luego en un nivel más alta te creerás "merecedor" de comer todo lo que quieras, sin importarte mucho los de abajo.

Pero lo que verdaderamente toca "rectificar" en cada oportunidad son las decisiones o consciencia a tomar, para intentar generar un cambio positivo. Quizás lo que nuestro protagonista intentó hacer no era lo más adecuado, pero fue el único que intentó hacer algo diferente, el único que intentó "pensar fuera de la caja". Cada prisionero es libre de bajar en el ascensor, y nadie se había atrevido en llegar al fondo. Quizás esta decisión no fue un "cambio espontáneo", pero de alguna manera fue una iniciativa que algún cambio generó, el cual no conocemos realmente porque el final es abierto.

Esta película fue tendencia hace dos años cuando inició la pandemia, y su temática relacionada al "encierro" tuvo mucho interés en la audiencia. Realmente es una película un poco grotesca en algunos puntos, por lo que obviamente no se recomienda a niños, pero realmente tiene muchos mensajes e interpretaciones para dar.

Svart Krabba (Black Crab), is a Swedish Netflix movie, released in 2022. Scandinavia also produces good film content and series, with a different 'touch' than American productions, which makes them different, while still having some Hollywood influence.

It's not the first film from Sweden, Denmark or Norway that I've seen. The fact that it is from these countries made me think it might be a very interesting film. I doubt I would have seen it if it would have been an American or British production. I'm not particularly a fan of war movies (unless it's about history and not action).

However, this film does not revolve around action or fantastic special effects, but around the drama of 'how to end a war'. This is something that Scandinavian cinema tends to do very well. They manage to focus the film on something in particular, without needing to add 'bombs and cymbals' or 'heroic dialogue', and they tend to do it very well, even if it might seem boring to certain audiences looking for more action.

The film is based in a sort of dystopian future, in which Sweden goes to war with a neighboring nation. They never really specify who the enemy army is, and the mystery is kept to the point that at some moment you think that the attackers are aliens or something like that, although later you can see that they are also human soldiers (whose white clothing, by the way, reminds us of a certain country that is trending lately...).

The first thing we notice in the film is that the inhabitants of Sweden were already living in a certain state of chaos from the very beginning, even before the war started. Riots and irregular groups are present. And from there we move to a few years later, where the protagonist of the film becomes a soldier in the Swedish army. But, at a certain moment, she is selected for a secret mission, which, if successful, could end the war in favor of Sweden.

It is described as a 'secret mission' with a high level of risk for everyone involved. But our protagonist has an overriding incentive, the success of her mission would mean gaining her freedom and regaining the presence of a distant loved one. All at once we see that the protagonist is herself forced to fight a war for her country. She is not free. Clearly, her bosses (of higher rank), have the power to 'grant' her freedom if she successfully completes the mission.

Another aspect to note is that, in the midst of the war, the country has been plunged into a kind of chaos among the population. Crowds of people in the streets dying of hunger and disease, waiting for the slightest slip of the passerby to steal their goods. Although this may not seem surprising in this type of situation, we should ask ourselves: Is this level of 'desperation' or 'chaos' has really happened in human history or is it an exaggeration of the movies...? This would be a separate topic.

The moral part of the film comes when the members of the secret mission discover that the supposed 'solution' to end the war is something that will completely annihilate the inhabitants of the attacking nation, and potentially cause many people in Sweden and around the world to die as well. Our protagonist is clear: she's going to do whatever it takes to get her loved one back, even if it means millions die. In reality, she doesn't seem to care about winning the war.

It's all a lie. As our protagonist discovers that the promises of being able to see her loved one again were false. She discovers that her efforts in completing the mission, leading to the death of several of her companions in the process, only served to benefit the Swedish army, but not herself. As everything she wanted to achieve vanishes, the goal is clear, to try to prevent the war between two nations from turning into an annihilation of much of the world's population.

In order not to continue with more spoilers, I will talk about what I personally think this film is trying to transmit, from my perception. This film leaves us with the reflection that in wars there is no good side. This sounds almost cliché but at the same time invites us to reflect on the role of ordinary citizens in the midst of such conflicts. From my perspective, no individual should be forced to be part of a war.

This film depicts the conflict between two nations. Each army seeks to win over the other, at all costs, no matter how many lives are lost. Being part of this war, for our protagonist, no longer means defending her country, it does not mean the survival of her family or herself. Being part of the war means working for one army or government to win over another, but there is no gain for the ordinary citizens, who are sacrificed. That's why at the end the movie talks about how ordinary citizens, if they want to live in peace, should not blindly obey their rulers, even disobey all orders that infringe on their fundamental liberties.

Something I liked about this film is that it shows something unusual in war scenographies: soldiers on a special secret mission, skating on ice in the frozen sea, to reach some islands where the target is located. This is not so common, or at least I have not seen it in any other movie or series. This and the message it leaves us with about society and war, and the moral conflict of winning the war through the deliberate loss of more lives, are the points that caught my attention the most in the film.

No es la primera película de Suecia, Dinamarca o Noruega que he visto. El hecho de que sea de estos países me hizo pensar que podría ser una película muy interesante. Dudo que la hubiera visto de tratarse de una producción americana o inglesa. No soy especialmente fanático de las películas de guerra (al menos que se trate de historia y no de acción).

Sin embargo, esta película no gira en torno a la la acción o efectos especiales fantásticos, sino en torno al drama de 'cómo poner fin a una guerra'. Esto es algo que el cine de Escandinavia suele hacer muy bien. Logran enfocar la película en algo en particular, sin necesidad de añadir 'bombas y platillos' o 'diálogos heroicos', y lo suelen hacer muy bien, aunque pueda parecerle aburrido a cierto público que busca más acción.

La película se basa en una especie de futuro distópico, en el cual Suecia entra en guerra con una nación vecina. Realmente nunca especifican quienes son el ejército enemigo, y el misterio se mantiene al punto de que en algún momento piensas que los atacantes son alienígenas o algo por el estilo, aunque luego puedes ver que también son soldados humanos (cuya vestimenta blanca, por cierto, nos recuerda a cierto país que está de 'moda' últimamente...).

Lo primero que observamos en la película es que ya desde un principio los habitantes de Suecia vivían en cierto estado de caos, incluso antes de iniciar la guerra. Disturbios y grupos irregulares hacen presencia. Y de allí nos trasladamos a unos años más adelante, en donde la protagonista de la película se convertido en una soldada del ejército sueco. Pero, en determinado momento, es seleccionada para una misión secreta, la cuál, de tener éxito, podría finalizar la guerra a favor de Suecia.

Es calificada como una 'misión secreta' con un alto nivel de riesgo para todos sus integrantes. Pero nuestra protagonista tiene un incentivo primordial, el éxito de su misión implicaría ganar su libertad y recuperar la presencia de un ser querido distante. De una vez vemos que la protagonista es de por sí forzada a pelear en una guerra por su país. No es libre. Claramente, sus jefes (de mayor rango), tienen la potestad de 'otorgarle' la libertad si finaliza con éxito la misión.

Otro aspecto a destacar es que, en medio de la guerra, el país se ha sumido en una especie de caos en la población. Multitud de personas en las calles muriendo de hambre y enfermedades, esperando el más mínimo descuido del transeúnte que vaya pasando para robarle sus bienes. Aunque esto no parezca algo sorprendente en este tipo de situaciones, habría que preguntarse ¿Es tan así? ¿Este nivel de 'desespero' o 'caos' se ha dado verdaderamente en la historia humana o será una exageración de las películas...? Esto ya sería un tema aparte.

La parte moral de la película viene cuando los miembros de la misión secreta descubren que la supuesta 'solución' para acabar la guerra es algo que va a aniquilar por completo a los habitantes de la nación atacante, y que potencialmente podría hacer que muchas personas de Suecia y del mundo entero también mueran. Nuestra protagonista lo tiene claro: va a hacer lo que sea para poder recuperar a su ser querido, aunque eso implique que millones mueran. En realidad, a ella parece importarle poco lo de ganar la guerra.

Todo es una mentira. Puesto que nuestra protagonista descubre que las promesas de volver a poder ver a su ser querido eran falsas. Ella descubre que su esfuerzo en completar la misión, llevando a la muerte a varios de sus compañeros en el proceso, solo sirvió para beneficiar al ejército sueco, pero no para ella misma. Al esfumarse todo lo que ella quería conseguir, el objetivo es claro, intentar evitar que la guerra entre dos naciones se convierta en una aniquilación de gran parte de la población mundial.

Para no seguir con más 'spoilers', hablaré de lo que personalmente pienso que intenta transmitir esta película, desde mi percepción. Esta película nos deja la reflexión de que en las guerras ningún bando es bueno. Esto suena casi a cliché pero a la vez nos invita a reflexionar sobre el rol de los ciudadanos de a pie en medio de este tipo de conflictos. Desde mi perspectiva, ningún individuo debería estar obligado a formar parte de una guerra.

En esta película se muestra el conflicto entre dos naciones. Cada ejército busca ganar sobre el otro, a toda costa, sin importar cuantas vidas se pierdan. Formar parte de esta guerra, para nuestra protagonista, pasó a no significar defender a su país, no significa la supervivencia de su familia ni de ella misma. Formar parte de la guerra significa trabajar para que un ejército o gobierno gane sobre otro, pero no hay ninguna ganancia para los ciudadanos de a pie, los cuales son sacrificados. Es por ello que al final la película habla de que los ciudadanos de a pie, si quieren vivir en paz, no deben obedecer ciegamente a sus gobernantes, incluso desobedecer todas la órdenes que atenten contra sus libertades.

Algo que me ha gustado de esta película es que se muestra algo inusual en escenografías de guerra: soldados en una misión especial secreta, patinando sobre hielo en el mar congelado, para llegar a unas islas donde se encuentra el objetivo. Esto no es tan común, o al menos no lo he visto en ninguna otra película o serie. Esto y el mensaje que nos deja acerca de la sociedad y la guerra, y el conflicto moral de ganar la guerra a través de la pérdida deliberada de más vidas, son los puntos que más me llamaron la atención de la película.
