  1. Retro Film Review: Finding Neverland (2004)@drax853d

This reviewer remarked, 'It's that time of year,' upon viewing Finding Neverland, 2004 biographical drama helmed by Marc Foster, whose apparent objective was amassing numerous Academy Awards. Despite critical acclaim, the film ultimately fell short against fierce competitors such as Million Dollar Baby and The Aviator, earning solely an award for composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek's musical score.

Set against the backdrop of the stage play by Allan Knee, the narrative revolves around Scottish playwright Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860–1937), renowned for creating the iconic character Peter Pan. Plot begins in 1903 with Barrie (played by Johnny Depp) being troubled by the failure of his plays. Everything changes after meeting with recently widowed Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (played by Kate Winslet) and four of her young sons. Barrie quickly befriends the boys and spends large amount of time with them, telling and inventing all kinds of adventure stories. Because of that Barrie’s marriage to actress Mary Ansell (played by Radha Mitchell) starts to fall apart, while Sylvia’s mother Emma du Maurier (played by Julie Christie) thinks that Barrie’s presence in her family could harm Sylvia’s marriage prospects and positions in society. All those problems, however, don’t prevent Barrie from taking inspiration from children in order to write his theatrical masterpiece.

Johnny Depp delivers a captivating performance as Barrie, portraying a complex yet innocent figure who dispels doubts regarding his relationships with the boys—a moment perhaps inserted to appease contemporary sensibilities rather than historical authenticity. Supporting performances by notables like Julie Christie and Radha Mitchell further bolster the production's value.Even actors in minor roles are good, including Kelly MacDonald in the role of Peter Pan.

However, the script penned by David Magee introduces unwarranted dramatic elements, resulting in a contrived and formulaic presentation, overshadowing the intriguing tale itself. Regrettably, Finding Neverland fails to capitalize fully on its abundant resources, particularly due to Magee's script, which undermines the compelling narrative through forced dramatisation. The only spark of genuine humanity appears at the very end,, hinted in the emotional scene that later became popular source of Internet memes, but by that time most great opportunities of Finding Neverland are already lost. Consequently, the characters appear as hollow caricatures instead of relatable individuals, leaving viewers disappointed by missed opportunities.

    RATING: 4/10 (+)
