Yesterday I spoke about The big short, which tackles a problematic and some characters that we could classify as scams and scammers, even though in a strict sense they are only bankers and investors. This time I have decided to talk about Focus, a film and characters that approach a story, which despite being fiction, is much more direct when it comes to defining what they really are: scammers.

Year: 2015 Category: Romantic, Crime, Comedy, Drama. Director: Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Cast: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Rodrigo Santoro, Gerald McRaney, B. D. Wong, Robert Taylor, Dominic Fumusa.

    Plot

Nicky, a scammer, takes as apprentice an inexperienced young woman named Jess. After performing a complex scam together, Nicky decides to abandon Jess, since he considers that the feelings he has for her are a problem. Three years later, Nicky and Jess are reunited when he tries to cheat a billionaire with whom she has a relationship.

    Opinion

Jess, a young woman who swindles, fails to cheat Nicky, who is the best scammer in America. Because of that, Jess begs Nicky to teach her to be as good as he is, and he accepts, but he also starts a relationship with her. Through this relationship and its activities, the viewer can see how the world of the scam in which Nicky unfolds develops, and now also Jess. So we see how Jess improves his skills until finally, during a football game, Nicky enters a betting duel with Liyuan Tse, of which I will not mention anything to avoid the spoilers.

Finally, Nicky leaves Jess, however, three years later, in Argentina, they meet again, since Nicky has the difficult task of cheating a billionaire named Rafael Garriga with whom Jess has a relationship, while, in turn, try to get her back.

I must say that the first part of the film seemed interesting and extremely entertaining, however, the second half of the film, the one that is shown after Nicky and Jess separated, I find it extremely tedious and lacking in charisma and enthusiasm. The first part is very alive, and the second part goes down. In fact, I think that the outcome of the conflict with Liyuan Tse would have been a better ending than what it really had, that is, I think the film could save the trip to Argentina, and maybe make the pre-match scenes longer. But who am I to modify anything?

The performances are good, especially the main couple, the feeling transmitted by Will Smith as Nicky, is identical to the view when I play Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, it is practically the same character, only a little more mature. On the other hand, Margot Robbie does an acceptable job, which is complemented by the interaction she has with Will Smith's character. The rest of the cast is fine, with no one necessarily standing out above others, perhaps, with the exception of B. D. Wong, who acts as a formidable Liyan Tse.

As an element of entertainment, the film meets expectations, but nothing more. It really is a simple movie, without complications, and that tries to maintain a certain cool style all the time, similar to that seen in Ocean's Eleven.

    Score

    6/10

It is a film that we can see to fill some possible empty space that we have in our busy schedule, perfect to see a Sunday as I did. And although it is true that the level drops a bit in its second part, it is also true that at no time it becomes boring.
