Ya hay varias series que muestran diversos lados del sistema penitenciario de USA, entre ellas Orange is the New Black o When They See Us, ambas recomendables. En este caso, la serie For Life, le da un nuevo giro, al mostrarnos al protagonista preso, ser su propio abogado. La serie está basada en la verdadera historia de Isaac Wright, aunque como menciona es principalmente ficticia. Fue estrenada el 2020 y ya se emitió en televisión unas 2 temporadas. En Netflix se puede ver la primera.
There are already several series that show different sides of the U.S. prison system, including Orange is the New Black or When They See Us, both of which are highly recommended. In this case, the series For Life, gives it a new twist, showing us the incarcerated protagonist, being his own lawyer. The series is based on the true story of Isaac Wright, although as it mentions it is mainly fictional. It premiered in 2020 and already aired on television about 2 seasons. On Netflix you can watch the first one.
Aaron Wallace tenía una vida perfecta, hasta que la desgracia le tocó la puerta. De un día a otro acaba siendo acusado y condenado por un crimen que no cometió, a cadena perpetua. El decide enfrentarse a su sentencia, lo hace convirtiéndose en abogado, tratando de juntar suficiente evidencia para poder revertirla. A su vez, será el abogado defensor de diversos reclusos y tendrá que enfrentar los diversos problemas de la vida en la cárcel.
Aaron Wallace had a perfect life, until misfortune knocked on his door. From one day to the next he ends up being accused and sentenced for a crime he didn't commit, to life imprisonment. He decides to face his sentence, he does it by becoming a lawyer, trying to gather enough evidence to be able to reverse it. At the same time, he will be the defense attorney for several inmates and will have to face the various problems of prison life.
La historia al ser inusual permite explorar aspectos poco vistos en otras series de la misma temática, como el de ser abogado defensor, a la vez que recluso. También explora la búsqueda de cambios progresistas en la cárcel, pero que a la vez tiene oposición tanto interna como externa. Obviamente también hay dramas familiares, ya que la vida sigue cuando uno se encuentra recluso. A pesar de abarcar bastantes temas, lo realiza de buena manera, volviéndola una serie interesante y que te deja con ganas de saber más. Otro punto positivo, es su trabajo con los tiempos, combinando de manera intrigante el pasado y presente.
The story, being unusual, allows the exploration of aspects rarely seen in other series of the same theme, such as being a defense attorney as well as an inmate. It also explores the quest for progressive changes in prison, but which at the same time has both internal and external opposition. Obviously there are family dramas as well, as life goes on when you are an inmate. Despite covering a lot of topics, it does so in a good way, making it an interesting series that leaves you wanting to know more. Another positive point is its work with time, combining past and present in an intriguing way.
No recuerdo muchos puntos negativos en la serie, tal vez, que los casos episódicos no llegan a ser tan interesantes como la historia principal. Eso sí, en aspectos técnicos, no hay nada realmente memorable.
I don't remember many negative points in the series, maybe that the episodic cases are not as interesting as the main story. Of course, in technical aspects, there is nothing really memorable.
Entre los actores principales destacó al protagonista encarnado por Nicholas Pinnock, a la actriz Indira Varma como la alcaldesa de la prisión, Safiya. Boris McGiver como Glen Maskins, realiza un excelente papel como antagonista y fiscal, la escena donde se recuerda su confrontación con Aaron Wallace en la corte, es de lo mejor de la serie. Finalmente 50 Cent, el cantante, también participa como Cassius Dawkins, un reo peligroso, lo hace muy bien.
Among the main actors, the main character played by Nicholas Pinnock, the actress Indira Varma as the mayor of the prison, Safiya. Boris McGiver as Glen Maskins, performs an excellent role as an antagonist and prosecutor, the scene where you remember his confrontation with Aaron Wallace in court, is the best of the series. Finally 50 Cent, the singer, also participates as Cassius Dawkins, a dangerous convict, he does very well.
En mi caso, me queda esperar la 2da temporada que aparezca en Netflix, pero es ya una serie por terminar en mi lista de obligados. Lo recomiendo ampliamente, si te gusta la temática de cárceles y abogados.
In my case, I'm left to wait for the 2nd season to appear on Netflix, but it is already a series to finish on my must-see list. I highly recommend it, if you like the theme of prisons and lawyers.
