Japanese culture is perhaps one of the cultures with the most interesting stories of monsters and legends, the Yokai, which can be categorized as ghosts, souls in pain or simply terrifying creatures, have really interesting origins and stories and have inspired many mangakas to create their stories. The manga GeGeGe no Kitarou is one of those many that takes inspiration from the Yokai, which although I have not read its manga or seen its anime, its main character is quite recognizable to me, since I follow several pages about manga and anime and its protagonist has starred in several covers of the magazine where it was published and although I did not know that it had a video game, it is not surprising because it was a somewhat popular manga at the time.

Today's Retro Review is about: GeGeGe no Kitarou: Fukkatsu! Tenma-Daiou (SNES).

The human world and the spiritual world are in chaos, the balance between these two worlds is collapsing because a demon called "Tenma-Daiou" has been resurrected and has set out to dominate these two worlds. Due to this threat and the danger to the whole world, Kitarou, our protagonist, who due to his half human and half Yokai nature must embark on a mission to stop this ancestral demon. A fairly simple story, but enjoyable, with a lot of humor, a Japanese humor quite characteristic and special, a type of humor very typical of anime, a story that in a way tries to show us that there must be a constant balance between human and spirituality. It is a game that due to being based on a manga/anime maintains a graphic and artistic style of an anime of that time, with a somewhat "childish" style in some of the designs of its characters and with quite large sprites, especially that of some final bosses, which occupy much of the screen when fighting against them.

These also have quite fluid movement, something important being a platform game, plus the designs of the enemies, being those essentially yokais, are very good representations of these mythical creatures and legends. The variety of scenarios is adequate, from villages, temples, forests, all these places very well presented in Japanese culture, besides having excellent details in terms of design and decoration, with good animation and visual effects, makes each scenario in which we find ourselves feel that we are facing a faithful representation of what can be seen in the pages of the manga or anime episodes. Musically it is quite good, I did not expect something outstanding but the soundtrack of this game is not bad, it also has several traditional Japanese melodies, sound effects that help create a gloomy atmosphere and full of mystery, but there will also be other musical themes a little quieter and calmer, even some that manage to convey melancholy, but equally there are all kinds of musical rhythms that manage to fit very well with every moment of this video game.

GeGeGe no Kitarou: Fukkatsu! Tenma-Daiou It's basically an adventure game with platforming elements, a pretty fun game from start to finish, especially and personally, I was quite intrigued in how would be the design of the next boss that I would face. Kitarou, our protagonist, being half human and half yokai has a rather rare ability and this curious protagonist can shoot his hair as a projectile, as if it were a needle attack against enemies. It is also a game that manages to focus on exploration, which is always an aspect that I personally like a lot in this type of games, since usually, exploring, as long as the design of the scenarios is good, can be satisfactory depending on whether it is also well rewarded. There are items to improve our protagonist's abilities and we can also summon other yokais as allies in battle. It's not a difficult game per se, but it provides quite an interesting gameplay challenge, especially in the battles against the final bosses. I didn't find an English or Spanish patch for this game, perhaps I didn't set out to look too hard, but it's equally enjoyable despite its Japanese language.

La cultura Japonesa quizás sea una de las que tiene más historias de monstruos y leyendas más interesantes que hay, los Yokai, los cuales pueden ser catalogados como fantasmas, almas en pena o simplemente criaturas terroríficas, cuentan con orígenes e historias realmente interesantes y han inspirado a muchísimos mangakas a crear sus historias. El manga GeGeGe no Kitarou es uno de esos tantos que toma inspiración en los Yokai, el cual aunque no leído su manga o visto su anime, su personaje principal me es bastante reconocible, ya que yo sigo varias páginas sobre manga y anime y su protagonista ha protagonizado varias portadas de la revista en donde se publicaba y aunque no sabía que tenía un videojuego, no es de sorprender debido a que fue un manga algo popular en su momento.

La Retro Review de hoy es sobre: GeGeGe no Kitarou: Fukkatsu! Tenma-Daiou (SNES).

El mundo humano y el mundo espiritual se encuentran en caos, el equilibrio entre estos dos mundos está colapsando debido a que un demonio llamado “Tenma-Daiou” ha resucitado y se ha propuesto dominar estos dos mundos. Debido a esta amenaza y al peligro para todo el mundo, Kitarou, nuestro protagonista, el cual debido a su naturaleza mitad humano y mitad Yokai deberá embarcarse en la misión de detener a este demonio ancestral. Una historia bastante simple, pero amena, con bastante humor, un humor Japonés bastante característico y especial un tipo de humor muy propio del anime, una historia que de cierta manera nos intenta demostrar que debe haber un constante equilibrio entre el humano y la espiritualidad. Es un juego que debido a estar basado en un manga/anime mantiene un estilo gráfico y artístico de un anime de esa época, con un estilo algo “infantil” en algunos de los diseños de sus personajes y con sprites bastantes grandes, especialmente el de alguno jefes finales, los cuales ocupan gran parte de la pantalla al momento de luchar contra ellos.

Estos además cuentan con bastante fluidez de movimiento, algo importante al ser un juego de plataformas, además de que los diseños de los enemigos, siendo esos esencialmente yokais, son muy buenos representaciones de estas criaturas míticas y de leyendas. La variedad de escenarios es la adecuada, desde aldeas, templos, bosques, todos estos lugares muy bien presentados de la cultura japonesa, además de contar con excelentes detalles en cuanto a diseño y decoración, con buenos efectos de animaciones y visuales, hace que cada escenario en el que nos encontremos se sienta que estamos ante un fiel representación ante lo que se puede ver en las páginas del manga o en los episodios del anime. Musicalmente está bastante bueno, no esperaba algo sobresaliente pero no está nada mal la banda sonora de este juego, además cuenta con varias melodías tradicionales japonesas, efectos de sonido que ayudan a crear una atmosfera sombría y llena de misterio, pero también habrán otros temas musicales un poco más tranquilos y calmados, incluso alguno que otro que logran transmitir melancolía, pero igualmente hay todo tipo de ritmos musicales que logran encajar muy bien con cada momento de este videojuego.

GeGeGe no Kitarou: Fukkatsu! Tenma-Daiou básicamente es un juego de aventuras con elementos de plataformas, un juego bastante divertido de principio a fin, especialmente y personalmente, estaba bastante intrigado en cómo sería el diseño del próximo jefe al cual me enfrentaría. Kitarou, nuestro protagonista, al ser mitad humano y mitad yokai cuenta con una habilidad bastante rara y es que este curioso protagonista puede disparar su cabello como proyectil, como si fuese un ataque de agujas contra los enemigos. Además es un juego que logra enfocarse en la exploración, lo cual siempre es un aspecto que en lo personal me gusta bastante en este tipo de juegos, ya que por lo regular, explorar siempre y cuando el diseño de los escenarios sea bueno, puede llegar a ser satisfactorio dependiendo si es también bien recompensado. Hay ítems para mejorar las habilidades de nuestro protagonista y también podremos invocar a otros yokais como aliados en batalla. No es un juego difícil de por sí, pero aporta un reto jugable bastante interesante, especialmente en las batallas contra los jefes finales. No encontré un parche al inglés o al español de este juego, quizás no me propuse buscar demasiado, pero es igualmente disfrutable a pesar de su idioma en japonés.

On this post, I'm going to share another kid's anime that I really enjoy. I didn't watch this as a kid, but I really found it fun and interesting. It's also quite popular among kids in Japan because the topic is mostly about *Japanese yokai* which they often hear in Japanese folktales and short stories.
The anime I'm talking about is called ***Ge ge ge no Kitarou***.

There have been a lot of versions for this anime, but I watched the one released last 2018. It's an episodic anime, so you'd get to meet and learn various types of yokai along the way. *YOKAI* is a catchall word for Japanese monsters, ghosts, supernaturals and so on. You need not worry though, because the yokai(s) in this anime were depicted in a really cute way.

The anime is set in the modern world where people no longer believes in the existence of yokai. However, a series of unexplained events like people turning into trees, or children missing near construction sites started happening. These happenings made humans confused and in chaos. A thirteen-year old girl named Mana then wrote a letter and sent it to the Yokai post to search for answers... and she was then greeted by Kitarou and Medama Oyaji.
In Tottori (on of the prefectures in Japan), there's a road called Mizuki Shigeru Road. Since I became a fan of Ge ge ge no Kitarou, I've always wanted to go to that place. I often talk about it with some of my students. One of them has been to that place and she sent me some photos. Let me share them to you below.

That's Mizuki Shigeru, the mangaka together with some characters: Kitarou, Medama Oyaji and Nezumi Otoko.

I'm quite fascinated with yokai because of some anime like Ge ge ge no Kitarou and Natsume Yuujinchou. Recently, I also read a manga which was called Elegant Yokai Apartment Life. They're all really fun to watch and read, but if I'd recommend one for kids, it'd be Gegege no Kitarou. <3 Well, there's also Yokai Watch which is really popular among Japanese kids, but I haven't watched it. xD

This opening song is really fun to listen to. I found myself LSS-ing to this for quite some time every time I hear it. I'm not sure whether the previous version of the anime has the same stories, but so far the 2018 version is really enjoyable to watch. I also like the art style more than the older versions. They're much cuter! *haha*

I also once made my version of kappa (one of Japanese yokai). I think there's also an episode about them in Gegege no Kitarou. Kappa are said to be gods of the river, but they're also feared as they can hurt people... but I think it's only when people are not respectful to them or the river.
I've read that once you befriended a kappa, they can help you with some everyday tasks. They especially are great helpers for agriculture as they can irrigate the land. They also bring some fish and good luck to the people they gave it too. In most anime I've watched, they are quite knowledgeable about medicine... and they love cucumbers. hahaha They even save good humans from drowning. :)
If you're interested in kappa and other Japanese yokai, then Gegege no Kitarou is a great anime for you! It's quite long with 90+ episodes, but as I've mentioned earlier, it's episodic, so you can take your time watching it after every story. <3

I’m not the kind of person who believes in ghosts, spirits, monsters, or even the supernatural, but I do know that Japan does have a huge fascination with them, so much that they have every kind of monster you could think of. Godzilla, Pokemon, Youkai Watch etc, you name it.

To a friend’s recommendation, I started watching GeGeGe no Kitarou (2018) , the latest iteration of the GeGeGe no Kitarou series created by Shigeru Mizuki, a famed manga artist and World War 2 veteran who also believed (He passed away a few years ago) in the existence of youkai claiming that he had seen one himself. I’m very sceptical of his claim, but I also didn’t fight in a war where I lost my arm, so who knows?
If you're an artist, and think it's unfair that you have poor drawing talent,
you're an ungrateful brat
His most prized work is notably this series about a group of youkai (Kitarou being our main guy) prevent other youkai from messing with the human world. If the show was just about that, it could have been a very dull affair, but GeGeGe no Kitarou is more than just that.

The target audience is kids, and the nostalgic, and yet, nearly every episode offer some sort of societal critique without beating you over the head with it. While viewing all 21 episodes that were released so far, life questions in my head piled up.

Such examples are :

Is plastic surgery okay if your facial features don’t conform to society’s standards?

Should people overwork themselves for that extra pay or is it better to lead a simple life without worries but with less?

Is our education system fucked? (In that case, Japan's, see picture above for reference)

How far are you willing to go to exploit people for monetary gain?

Of course, there are also those typical episodes where it’s just about friendship and childhood dreams; it is a kid’s show after all. What sets it apart from other kid’s shows in my opinion though is how nonchalant it goes about demonstrating all of these themes, without being overly preachy about its messages. But most importantly, the series is just solidly entertaining with fun characters, good animation, music and action. Its episodic nature also means we get to explore something totally brand new every put time.

If only Toei Animation poured that much effort into its other shows as this one, then maybe this classic studio wouldn’t be so derided today by a section of the anime community.

Production of the sixth period of TV animation "Ge Gege no Kitaro" by Mizuki Shigeru original was decided. It will be broadcasted on Fuji TV and others from Sunday at 9 o'clock every Sunday from April 1.
