Hello everyone, fellow movie fans, dear Movies and TV Shows community, I hope you're all doing great today! Today I'm bringing you a new review, with my personal opinions on: Gladiator II! After all these years – what were they, 24 years? – Ridley Scott actually does it… I came in with my doubts, to be honest, I mean, how do you make a sequel to Gladiator? That movie was HUGE in its time, Russell Crowe, the music, wow, legendary… so yeah, the expectation was… complicated, let's say… honestly… I ended up feeling strangely excited, but also with mixed feelings, you know what I mean? It’s just that… I had a good time, much better than I expected, but, and it’s a BIG but, things are complicated. I’ve seen that a lot of people who love the original are torn in two, some say they didn’t like it at all, that they are disappointed… and well, I understand a little, but then there are other people, maybe the newer ones or those who are just going to see what’s up, who seem to have enjoyed it as pure popcorn entertainment. There’s a fascinating debate brewing, and that makes talking about the movie more fun, right?

So, what’s it about? The craziest thing, and someone maybe said it perfectly, is how it’s put together… it’s a direct sequel, it takes the story like 20 years later, we even see Connie Nielsen as Lucilla again, and Derek Jacobi as Graco is there like a wise old politician (it felt like a cool wink). I mean, it follows the timeline, but… and this is where my head went boom! the key points of the plot? The journey of the new protagonist? Dude, it follows the same formula as the first Gladiator, but really similar... I read somewhere that they called it a "requel," and that's the word! It's a sequel that feels like a remake at the same time, how strange... we already saw it with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with Creed, even with Scream, but seeing it in Gladiator? It felt... strange, I was sitting there thinking, "Hey, haven't I seen this before?"... this trend is really strange... but hey, what can I say, even though you can see the trick, it still hooked me.

Hoy les vengo a traer una nueva reseña, con mis opiniones personales de: Gladiador II! después de todos estos años – ¿qué fueron? ¿24 años? – Ridley Scott va y la hace.. yo entré con mis dudas, la verdad, o sea, ¿cómo le haces una secuela a Gladiador? Esa película fue GIGANTE en su momento, Russell Crowe, la música, uff, legendario.. así que sí, la expectativa estaba.. complicada, digamos.. sinceramente.. termine emocionado de una forma extraña, pero también con sentimientos encontrados, ¿me entienden? Es que.. la pasé bien, mucho mejor de lo que esperaba, pero y es un GRAN pero, la cosa está complicada, he visto por ahí que mucha gente que ama la original está partida en dos, algunos de plano dicen que no les gustó nada, que están decepcionados.. y pues, lo entiendo un poco, pero luego hay otra gente, puede que los más nuevos o los que solo van a ver qué onda, que parece que sí la están disfrutaron como puro entretenimiento palomero. Se está armando un debate súper interesante, y eso hace que hablar de la peli sea más divertido, ¿no?
Entonces, ¿de qué va? Lo más loco, y por ahí alguien lo dijo perfecto, es cómo está armada.. es una secuela directa, agarra la historia como 20 años después, hasta vemos de nuevo a Connie Nielsen como Lucilla, y Derek Jacobi como Graco anda ahí como un político viejito sabio (se sintió como un guiño chévere).. o sea, sigue la línea del tiempo, pero...y aquí es donde mi cabeza hizo ¡pum! ¿los puntos clave de la trama? ¿El viaje del nuevo protagonista? Amigo, sigue la misma fórmula de la primera Gladiador, pero realmente similar.. por ahí leí que la llamaron "recuela", y esa es la palabra! Es una secuela que se siente como un remake al mismo tiempo, qué cosa más rara.. ya lo vimos con Star Wars: El Despertar de la Fuerza, con Creed, hasta con Scream, pero ¿verlo en Gladiador? Se sintió... extraño, estaba ahí sentado pensando, "Oye, ¿esto no lo vi ya?".. es bien rara esta moda.. pero bueno, qué les digo, aunque se les ve el truco, igual me enganchó.

Let's talk about Paul Mescal, he plays Lucius, yes, Lucilla's son, now all grown up... but let's get it straight: this guy is not Russell Crowe, he doesn't have that presence that fills the entire screen, that energy that Russell had as Maximus... you know, that vibe that made you want to go fight him. Mescal is something else, he has a more inward-looking, more melancholic energy, the guy comes from movies like Aftersun, that indie gem, so seeing him now as the lead in this GIANT blockbuster is weird, but hey, I think he does it well... it's a different flavor, not as 'epic' at first, but he does make you feel the character's struggle, his rage, his pain. They say that people like Timothée Chalamet or Austin Butler were auditioned, but Ridley Scott went for Mescal, and I understand why... he brings a different kind of intensity that works for this story, even if it doesn't have that roar of Maximus, but where the movie UNLEASHES, and maybe even more than the first one, is in the spectacle.

Ridley Scott didn't hold ANYTHING back, the action scenes are fucking crazy... there's a battle at the beginning that is HUGE, chaotic, kind of hard to follow at times, like those Napoleon ones Scott did recently, but what a scale, folks! Impressive, but when they get to the Colosseum... oh, dad... forget about the tigers, nothing else We're talking about RHINOS attacking people, and SHARKS... Yes, you heard right. I've seen somewhere that historians are having a brain hemorrhage on the internet over historical accuracy, that supposedly the Romans didn't even know what sharks were or something like that... and well, who the fuck cares! I feel like it doesn't have to be a History Channel documentary! Was it ridiculous? Of course! Was it incredible to watch? Of course it was! It's pure B-movie madness, super exaggerated, forced into a $250 million epic... this movie is much more on the side of pure action, much more let's kill each other, it doesn't have that Shakespearean political drama vibe that the first one had. It's also super brutal, heads flying, limbs everywhere, very visceral... maybe it lacks a bit of the dramatic weight of the original because it focused so much on the spectacle, but how entertaining it is.

Hablemos de Paul Mescal, él hace de Lucius, sí, el hijo de Lucilla, ya grandecito.. pero a ver, que quede claro de una: ¡este tipo no es Russell Crowe no tiene esa presencia que te llena toda la pantalla, esa energía que tenía Russell como Maximus.. ustedes saben, esa onda que te daban ganas de irte a pelear con él. Mescal es otra cosa, tiene como una energía más pa' dentro, más melancólica, el tipo viene de pelis como Aftersun, esa joyita indie, así que verlo ahora de prota en este blockbuster GIGANTE, es raro, pero bueno, creo que lo hace bien.. es un sabor distinto, no tan 'épico' de entrada, pero sí te hace sentir la lucha del personaje, su rabia, su dolor. Por ahí dicen que gente como Timothée Chalamet o Austin Butler hicieron casting, pero Ridley Scott se fue por Mescal, y entiendo por qué.. le mete otro tipo de intensidad que funciona para esta historia, aunque no tenga ese rugido de Maximus, pero donde la peli se DESATA, y quizás hasta más que la primera, es en el espectáculo.
Ridley Scott no se guardó NADA, las escenas de acción son una maldita locura.. hay una batalla al principio que es GIGANTE, caótica, medio difícil de seguir a veces, como esas de Napoleón que hizo Scott hace poco, pero qué escala, señores! Impresionante, pero cuando llegan al Coliseo.. ay, papa.. olvídense de los tigres, nada más Estamos hablando de RINOCERONTES atacando gente, y de TIBURONES.. Sí, escucharon bien. Ya vi por ahí que a los historiadores les está dando un derrame cerebral en internet por la exactitud histórica, que dizque los romanos ni sabían qué eran los tiburones o algo así.. y pues, a quién carajo le importa! Sienti que no tiene que ser un documental del History Channel! ¿Que si fue ridículo? ¡Obvio! ¿Que si fue increíble de verlo? Claro que sí! Es pura locura de película clase B, súper exagerada, metida a la fuerza en una película épica de 250 millones de dólares.. esta peli se va mucho más por el lado de la acción pura y dura, mucho más vamos a matarnos, no tiene ese rollo de drama político tipo Shakespeare que tenía la primera. También es súper brutal, vuelan cabezas, miembros por todos lados, muy visceral.. tal vez le falta un poco del peso dramático de la original por enfocarse tanto en el show, pero cómo entretiene.

Let’s talk about the actors… Denzel Washington! Wow! All the people in the reviews were right: this guy is a screen magnet… he plays the character Oliver Reed played in the first one, you know? A former gladiator turned trainer/supplier, a know-it-all guy, and Denzel just owns every second he’s in it! He has this quiet intensity, this glint in his eye like he’s up to something, he doesn’t even have to say much; his sheer presence speaks volumes. It’s not like it’s a super different role for him – it’s just Denzel being Denzel, incredibly cool and dominant, as always – but he lifts the movie just like that, effortlessly. He injects a sense of intrigue and depth into it that maybe the script alone doesn’t give you… every time he appeared in it, I was intrigued, he totally steals the movie! And the villains! Joseph Quinn (Eddie from Stranger Things) and Fred Hechinger (the weirdo from The White Lotus, season 1) play two emperor brothers, Geta and Caracalla, and well, they are crazy! Spoiled, cruel kids, and honestly, they even make you laugh at how mean they are... they bring a chaotic energy that's scary, but also fun to watch, like if Caligula had an equally deranged twin.

Pedro Pascal is also around, playing a former general who is forced into an arena fight... he brings his usual charisma and adds another layer to the whole power play, he definitely has that presence, maybe even more classic 'epic' than Mescal in some parts. But yeah, back to the comparison... there's no other way, Gladiator II entertains, it's a spectacle and has some really badass performances, especially Denzel's! But... can it ever be like the original? Well no, it just doesn’t have that magic, that thing, that perfect mix of epic action, political intrigue and raw emotion with a performance to die for like Crowe’s… it feels more like an action movie with a HUGE budget set in Rome, very well done, yes, but not a masterpiece, epic, and I think that’s where some fans are disappointed. If you go in expecting Gladiator again, you’re going to be down… but if you go in expecting a really crazy, punchy Roman adventure with an incredible production, you’re probably going to have a great time.

Hablemos de los actores.. Denzel Washington! Qué bárbaro! toda la gente en las reseñas tenía razón: este señor es un imán en la pantalla.. hace como del personaje que era Oliver Reed en la primera, ¿saben? Un ex gladiador que ahora es entrenador/proveedor, un tipo que se las sabe todas, y Denzel, simplemente, se adueña de cada segundo que sale! Tiene esa intensidad callada, ese brillo en los ojos como de que está tramando algo, ni siquiera tiene que hablar mucho; su pura presencia lo dice todo, no es que sea un papel súper diferente para él – es Denzel siendo Denzel, increíblemente cool y dominante, como siempre – pero levanta la película así nomás, sin esfuerzo. Le mete una onda de intriga y profundidad que tal vez el guion solito no te da.. cada vez que salía, yo me sentía intrigado, se roba la película, totalmente! ¡Y los villanos! Joseph Quinn (el Eddie de Stranger Things) y Fred Hechinger (el morro raro de The White Lotus, la primera temporada) hacen de dos hermanos emperadores, Geta y Caracalla, y bueno, están loquísimos!, unos niños malcriados, crueles y, sinceramente, hasta te dan risa de lo malos que son.. le meten una energía caótica que da miedo, pero a la vez es divertido de ver, como si Calígula tuviera un gemelo igual de desquiciado.
Pedro Pascal también anda por ahí, haciendo de un ex general que lo obligan a pelear en la arena.. trae su carisma de siempre y le añade otra capa a todo el juego de poder, definitivamente tiene esa presencia, tal vez hasta más 'épica' clásica que Mescal en algunas partes. Pero sí, volviendo a la comparación.. es que no hay de otra, Gladiador II entretiene, es un espectáculo y tiene actuaciones muy cabronas, especialmente la de Denzel! pero... ¿llega a ser como la original? Pues no, simplemente no tiene esa magia, esa cosa, esa mezcla perfecta de acción épica, intriga política y emoción cruda con una actuación para la historia como la de Crowe.. se siente más como una película de acción con un presupuesto GIGANTE ambientada en Roma, muy bien hecha, eso sí, pero no como una obra maestra, épica, y creo que de ahí viene la decepción de algunos fans. Si vas esperando Gladiador otra vez, te vas a bajonear.. pero si entras buscando una aventura romana bien loca, llena golpes, con una producción increíble probablemente te la vas a pasar genial.

And wait, I almost forgot... I read the CRAZIEST thing in the world about an idea they originally had for this sequel... hold on, it turns out Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott, sort of regretting killing off Maximus, asked NICK CAVE for a script... and the plot? That Maximus was resurrected by the Roman gods in purgatory... to return to Earth and KILL Jesus Christ and his followers because Christianity was weakening the old gods... Hahaha, apparently the script was called 'Christ Killer', can you imagine what the hell that is! Suddenly the sharks in the Colosseum even sound logical, right?! Hahaha! It makes you think 'what would have happened', although the truth is, it would have been better if they didn't do that crazy thing... well, now, look, my final opinion?

It’s an entertaining ride, it looks spectacular and yes, at times it’s ridiculous... it doesn’t reach the heights of the original, not even close, and the ‘sequel’ thing does feel kind of weird, but Paul Mescal does a decent job, the action is insane (but the good kind), and Denzel Washington is worth- they put more into the show than into the story or even into the characters evolving a lot, but as popcorn entertainment, to watch on a big screen on a Sunday with the family, it delivers. I easily give it a 7/10, it’s not the masterpiece that the first one was, and I totally understand why some fans are going to say that it doesn’t even come close, but if you see it for what it is: an action movie, about gladiators, for adults (R rated)... you’ll have a good time! Y esperen, que casi se me olvida... leí la cosa MÁS LOCA del mundo sobre una idea que tenían al principio para esta secuela.. agárrense, resulta que Russell Crowe y Ridley Scott, como que arrepentidos de haber matado a Maximus, le pidieron un guion a NICK CAVE.. y la trama? Que Maximus era resucitado por los dioses romanos en el purgatorio... para volver a la Tierra y MATAR a Jesucristo y a sus seguidores porque el cristianismo estaba debilitando a los dioses viejos.. Jajaja, aparentemente el guion se llamaba 'Christ Killer', ¿Se imaginan Qué carajos es esa fumada! ¡De repente los tiburones en el Coliseo suenan hasta lógicos, ¿no?! ¡Jajaja! Te deja pensando 'qué hubiera pasado', aunque la verdad, fue mejor que no hicieran esa locura.. bueno, ya, miren, ¿mi opinión final?
Es un viaje entretenido, se ve espectacular y sí, a ratos es ridícula.. no llega a la altura de la original, ni de vaina, y eso de la 'recuela' sí se siente medio raro, pero Paul Mescal se lo hace decentemente, la acción es una demencia (pero de la buena), ¡y Denzel Washington hace que valga la pena, le meten más al show que a la historia o hasta a que los personajes evolucionen mucho, a veces, pero como entretenimiento palomero, para ver en pantalla gigante un domingo en familia, cumplió. Yo fácil le doy un 7/10, no es la obra maestra que fue la primera, y entiendo perfecto por qué algunos fans van a decir que no le llega ni a los talones, pero si la ves por lo que es: una película de acción, de gladiadores, para adultos (clasificación R).. te la pasas entretenido! Mucho mejor de lo que yo me esperaba, la verdad, y cuéntenme, que les pareció? Ya la vieron? Y bueno, eso es todo por hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense mucho, byebye!

I know I sound like one of those people clinging to the past when I say this, but cinema isn't what it used to be... Not because I feel like quality films don't exist these days, but because I find it quite evident that the concept of a blockbuster has become too distorted, and what was once associated with big-budget films that effectively exploited it (combining good special effects, brilliant performances, and generally high-quality production) has now been relegated to generic continuations of franchises that should have died years ago.

Ironically, despite being a sequel, I feel that Gladiator II breaks with this annoying trend, showing us a blockbuster that, while far from perfect, allows us to connect with what made blockbuster cinema so appealing a couple of decades ago.

"Gladiator," released in the 2000s, is an undisputed classic that, under Ridley Scott's direction, managed to magically transport us to ancient Rome, a time that beautifully blended epic drama with the intimate conflicts of each of its characters. And, quite deservedly, it earned an eternal place in popular culture.

After several years in the making, we finally have a sequel, a film that works very well in isolation but seemed overpowered for those familiar with its predecessor.

Expectations were high, and it's perfectly understandable why, given that Ridley was back in the directing chair and that the cast was filled with big stars of this decade like Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and an excellent Denzel Washington (to name a few).

It wasn't an easy task, and I feel the end result lives up to its promise: a solid epic filled with beautiful scenes, with an immersive production and a script that gives all its characters some space to shine.

Could it have been better? Clearly, Gladiator II loses focus from time to time and often feels scattered among its own subplots, especially when it tries to connect with some very specific aspects of the first film.

The brilliant thing is that despite this apparent mediocrity, it's still a fun and exciting film, and feels fresher than any other modern mainstream release.

Hola cinéfilos, es un placer estar de vuelta por la comunidad, con una nueva reseña de lo que más nos gustan, las series, así como esas películas que nos roban el aliento, haciéndonos pasar momentos bien entretenidos. Ya fuera mostrándonos todo un mundo de fantasía, gracias a la magia de las tecnologías en constante evolución en el cine.

O en este caso, trasladándose en el tiempo, a lo gloriosa que ha sido la historia de la evolución humana. En esta oportunidad les comentaré sobre mi experiencia con "Gladiador II", luego de que finalmente me atreví a disfrutarla. Aunque estaba un poco renuente, de que por alguna razón pudiera dañar la imagen que me dejó la icónica cinta de la primera entrega.

A modo de introducción, les cuento que "Gladiador II", es otra de las tantas secuelas del cine que hemos podido disfrutar, intento al fin por seguir dándole vida a una buena historia. Pero no estamos hablando de cualquier historia por Dios, por lo que es deducible que esta producción la tuvo bien difícil.

Llegando desde el primer momento con el desafío de no solo mantener el legado de su predecesora, sino también de expandirlo. Y si me preguntas mi opinión, te podría decir que, aunque no alcanza la grandeza de la original, "Gladiador II" se puede decir que logra ser sumamente entretenida, gracias a la evolución de los efectos especiales en el cine, mostrándose visualmente impresionante.

Lo que más me gustó:

No me desgastaré tan siquiera en una comparación de una película con la otra, considero que no es necesaria, ya que la magia de "Gladiador I" no la va a borrar nadie jamás. Pero una de las características que destaca de "Gladiador II" es la capacidad que tiene en el uso de herramientas que le permitieron ofrecer un espectáculo visual digno de la gran pantalla.

De la película me lograron impresionar las secuencias de acción, tanto dentro como fuera del Coliseo. Creo que fueron tratadas con una brutalidad que considero necesaria, para transmitir la realidad de lo cruel que fuera de este estilo de vida de la época romana. El entretenimiento se viste de adrenalina con batallas que incluyen todo tipo de animales exóticos y agresivos, como el caso de rinocerontes y primates.

Entiendo que estas escenas le añaden un nivel de espectacularidad a la película, es entendible que a muchos los dejarán impresionados. Por otro lado, es aplaudible de que la película, no se limita a repetir la fórmula de su predecesora, sino que introduce su propia receta haciendo uso de giros narrativos. Creando una trama política más compleja, sorprendiendo con este desenlace de roles de poderes que nos recuerdan, en ciertos momentos, a series como por ejemplo "Game of Thrones".

Actuaciones destacadas:

Quieren que les sea sincero, lo que me motivó a ver la película, no fueron ni las escenas de acción que mostraron en el tráiler de la cinta, o quizás ese deseo que sembró la expectativa de, si podría mínimo, colarse en nuestros corazones, como lo supo hacer la primera entrega. Fue la novedad de contar con la presencia de un actor de alta gama como Denzel Washington, quien, en el papel de Macrino, considero que fue uno de los puntos más altos para el éxito de la película. La carga dramática que aportó su actuación desbordó de tal manera que, pudiera fácilmente ser descrita como "gloriosa".

No sé si pudiera permitirme decir que es una de las mejores de su carrera, porque simplemente lo tengo fijado en mi memoria por su actuación en el suspenso de acción del año 2004, "Hombre en llamas". Pero en el contexto de "Gladiador II" considero que le ha aportado el carisma necesario, con una profundidad que eleva cada escena en la que participa.

Por otro lado, el joven actor de 29 años con orígenes irlandeses, Paul Mescal, en el papel de Lucius. Quien ha logrado convencer a muchos, aunque en lo personal no me aportó más allá que la rudeza que necesitaba su personaje. Prefiero quedarme con la actuación del carismático Pedro Pascal, que aunque con un papel menor en la cinta, se mostró positivamente a la altura, especialmente en su interacción con otros personajes claves.

Considero, a modo de conclusión, que "Gladiador II" es una necesaria secuela que se merecía un clásico como su antecesora, o sea justifica su existencia. Sin embargo, si no has disfrutado aún no intentes comprarla, disfrútala como una nueva perspectiva, no encontrarás el alma que hizo de la primera edición totalmente una leyenda.

La recomiendo para aquellos que buscamos diversión en la pantalla grande, que sabiamente no esperan superar las expectativas emocionales de la original. Siéntate libre de dejarme tu opinión en los comentarios, sobre esta nueva película si ya la pudiste disfrutar, de lo contrario te animo para que le des una oportunidad.

One of the movies that came out last year and that I really wanted to see was Gladiator II, because the first installment was really a classic, one of the best movies I saw of the genre. A movie that tells us about the history of ancient Rome, the emperors and the slavery that was lived at the time. Also how the inhabitants of the Roman Empire, were entertained with fights where slaves fought in battle to the death. A bloody movie, even more than the original. What did I think of Gladiator II? Well, in this review I am going to tell you.

Una de las películas que salía el año pasado y que tenía muchas ganas de verla era Gladiador II, debido a que la primera entrega fue realmente un clásico, una de las mejores películas que vi del género. Una película que nos habla de la historia de la antigua Roma, de los emperadores y la esclavitud que se vivió en la época. También como los habitantes del imperio romano, eran entretenidos con peleas donde los esclavos peleaban en batalla hasta la muerte. Una película sangrienta, incluso más que la original. ¿Qué tal me pareció Gladiador II? Pues en esta reseña se los voy a contar.

There are movies that definitely leave us without words to describe them.

I just saw Gladiator II and in one word I say it is: fabulous, I loved it.

From the beginning I was amazed by its imposing scenery, the aerial view capturing a general shot took me to remember those beautiful biblical stories as well as other Roman stories. I even remembered reading about how the theater began.

Gladiator II stars Paul Mescal and has an excellent cast of actors and actresses of very high stature such as Denzel Washinton.

Hay películas que definitivamente nos dejan sin palabras para describirlas.

Acabo de ver Gladiador II y en una sola palabra digo es: fabulosa, me encantó.

Desde el principio me sorprendió su imponente escenario, la vista aérea captando un plano general me llevó a recordar aquellas historias bíblicas hermosas así como otras historias romanas. Incluso, recordé lecturas sobre cómo inició el teatro.

Gladiador II es protagonizada por Paul Mescal, cuenta con un excelente reparto de actores y actrices de talla muy alta como Denzel Washinton.

It would be unfair to say who is the best actor or actress in this film, although the competition would be between men because not many women participate. So I would not dare to say who is the best.

For lovers of good films, even if I go against the great critics and they don't think the same as me, here I recommend this one. I repeat, it has not been getting very good reviews but I recommend it because I liked it and so did my family.

Gladiator is no longer the favorite of many because of its repetitive format. For many, it is still the story of power struggles from a historical perspective. For me it still has entertaining and good action. The epic structure always gets me.

I liked the continuity given to the film in relation to the first film, I think it goes in very good symphony with the previous one. Obviously, I can not fail to highlight the performance of my favorite actor Denzel Washington who as always I qualify his performance as ma-gis-tral. A real expert in the area.

Sería injusto decir quién es el mejor actor o actriz en este film aunque, la competencia sería entre hombres porque no participan muchas damas. Decir entonces quién es mejor, no me atrevería.

Para los amantes de las buenas películas aunque vaya en contra de los grandes críticos y no piensan lo mismo que yo, aquí les recomiendo ésta. Repito, no ha estado recibiendo muy buenas comentarios pero la recomiendo porque me gustó y a mi familia también .

Gladiador, ha dejado de ser la favorita de mucho por su formato repetido. Para muchos, sigue siendo la historia de luchas de poder desde una perspectiva histórica. Para mi sigue teniendo acción entretenida y de la buena. La estructura épica siempre me atrapa.

Me gustó la continuidad que se le da al film con relación a la primera película, considero que va en muy buena sinfonía con la anterior. Obviamente, no puedo dejar de destacar la actuación de mi actor favorito Denzel Washington a quien como siempre califico su actuación como ma-gis-tral. Todo un experto en el área.

Seeing Denzel Washington his role as a character, as a villain and apparently enjoying his character and taking it to the highest level is admirable, I definitely loved his role.

From my expert point of view, I think the objective of the film is clear, to entertain. As in many other epic films, the gladiators offer nothing but entertainment. Each character makes us get in touch with them so that we disconnect and enjoy ourselves.

In this gladiator 2 film, the advancement of technology is very well appreciated, which allows us to have more action.

Certainly, and taking into account the criticisms of another part of the audience who did not like the movie, I agree that Gladiator is a film that offers nothing but entertainment as I said before.

For those who like this kind of movies and are looking for nothing but entertainment, I recommend it. Just watching Denzel Washinton is more than enough, you won't see anything wasted hahaha.

Ver a un Denzel en su papel de carácter, de villano y al parecer disfrutando en grande con su personaje y llevándolo al máximo nivel es admirable, me encantó su rol definitivamente.

Desde mi punto de vista para nada experto, creo que el objetivo del film es claro, entretener. Como en muchas otras películas épica, los gladiadores no ofrecen más que entretenimiento. Cada personaje hace que entremos en contacto con ellos para que nos desconectémos y disfrutemos.

En esta cinta de gladiador 2 se aprecia muy bien al avance de la tecnología lo que nos permite tener más acción.

Ciertamente, y atendiendo las críticas de otra parte del público a quienes no les gustó la película, concuerdo en que Gladiador es una cunta que no ofrece sino entretenimiento tal como señalo anteriormente.

Para quienes les gusta este tipo de películas y no busca más nada sino entretenimiento, se las recomiendo. Tan solo ver a Denzel Washinton es más que suficiente, no verán desperdicios jajaja.

Doy 8/10 a Gladiadores 2. Vean y si pueden me comentan.

Synopsis: Ancient Rome. Sixteen years after Maximus was murdered by his own uncle, Lucius is forced to enter the Colosseum to defend the honor of his entire family, facing a series of epic battles to try to regain a more just and egalitarian Rome for all.

In the 2000s, Ridley Scott created a true cinematic epic starring Russell Crowe. Now, twenty-four years later, he tried to do the same thing, but this time with Paul Mescal as the protagonist. The result was not as good as expected, but even so, this is a very high-quality sequel in its general aspects, and without a doubt, it is a true lesson in how to make a movie by staggering action scenes within such a grand historical period. Narratively, the movie lacks better developments (this being its greatest and worst “sin”), but it is a very agile movie in presenting its conflicts and expanding on complicating factors.

The great speed with which the main events emerge may have been an efficient way to “cover up” the lack of depth of a script that is essentially weak (and even shallow, if analyzed more deeply), but that manages to be very interesting due to its political dynamics full of intrigue and some good “plot twists”. There is no way to ignore the fact that this sequel is inferior to its predecessor, but there is also no way to ignore the fact that this time, the action reaches an epic scale (and that at times can take your breath away a little) and involves political aspects with a slightly more transparent literalness, creating more “empathy” with the audience.

After seeing his own city being taken by General Acacius (who works directly for the tyrant emperors of Rome), Lucius is taken as a prisoner of war. Eventually (after a display of great strength in the fight for his own survival on the battlefield), he ends up being bought by Macrinus (a kind of “scout” who discovers potential future gladiators) and gradually, he becomes involved in a complex web full of intrigues that is fueled by numerous political divergences, ambition, power, money and extremist authoritarianism. Any false step brings incalculable losses, and within this insecurity, new excellent subplots emerge.

In the midst of all this, Lucius also has the opportunity to reconnect with his own past (seeing old faces he hadn't seen for a long time). However, overcome by anger, hatred and the desire to do his own "justice", he ends up diving into his own past and needs to redefine his plans in order to achieve his ultimate goal: to give the people of Rome a more just and egalitarian city. Limits are tested, betrayals are committed and the script works through everything very quickly, but fails to delve deeper into these fundamentals. The movie ended up being "bombarded" with great new "dramatic guidelines", but they were just floating around.

While on the one hand the script has a good background to work with (the political aspect is very interesting, and opens up a great space for countless and different types of conflicts, which go beyond politics itself, involving family and society), on the other hand, the plot fails to support the weight of its own arguments. There are times when the script is “bloated” just to extend the project’s running time (because they are disposable scenes). I had the strong impression that this movie was made just as a private pleasure for the director himself, to materialize a dream. A commendable attitude if we consider only the personal aspect, but in the professional aspect, more needed to be done.

In other words, it was like watching Ridley Scott “playing” at building a more modern epic movie, after all, he now has much more technology (and money) available to make his “mental reveries” about war in Ancient Rome a reality. In fact, he delivered a very personal project, but this ended up becoming a problem because he did something too “basic”, especially when compared to what he himself did more than two decades ago (with less money and less technology at his disposal). The entertainment is guaranteed, but the narrative is quite limited (which ends up being frustrating when it is quite noticeable how much room there was for better developments).

Paul Mescal is unable to deliver an epic performance as Lucius (although he delivers great moments at his peak of adrenaline in the battles inside the Colosseum), but he still does a pretty decent job. Pedro Pascal is a great supporting actor (but like the other supporting actors, he also didn't have his own story developed in depth) and alongside Connie Nielsen, he adds more weight and quality to the cast (which can't be said for the duo Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger, who play two "crazy" emperor brothers in a rather cartoonish way). However, the one who steals the show is Denzel Washington, because in all of his scenes, he stands out naturally.

Personal values such as honor, glory and justice (seen in the first movie) are still the pillars of Gladiator II, and although they are scaled to a lesser extent to the detriment of the “spectacularization” of the action in the battles, the narrative remains functional. Ridley Scott knows what he’s doing, but he let himself be carried away by personal motivations and delivered something that doesn’t necessarily complement the previous movie (which was already complete, to tell the truth). Technically incredible (excellent special and practical effects, competent photography, art direction, costumes and soundtrack), we have here a project of great dimensions that deserves to be appreciated for all its purely cinematic relevance.

Eu tive a forte impressão de que esse filme foi feito apenas como um deleite particular do próprio diretor, para materializar um sonho. Uma atitude louvável se for considerado apenas o aspecto pessoal, mas no aspecto profissional, era preciso fazer mais.

Em outras palavras, foi como ver Ridley Scott “brincando” de construir um filme épico mais moderno, afinal, agora ele tem muito mais tecnologia (e dinheiro) disponível para tornar em realidade os seus “devaneios mentais” sobre a guerra na Roma Antiga. No entanto, quem rouba o show é Denzel Washington, porque em todas as suas cenas, ele consegue um destaque natural.

Valores pessoais como honra, glória e justiça (vistos no primeiro filme) ainda são os pilares de Gladiador II, e embora sejam escalados em menor potencialidade em detrimento da “espetacularização” da ação nas batalhas, a narrativa se mantém funcional. I'm still taking advantage of these holidays to rest, and there's nothing better than being in bed and watching a good movie. My oldest son told me that it was already possible to see Gladiator II, and without hesitation, we planned to watch it as a family. The truth is, I had been waiting quite a while to see it. It's all due to the hype on social media, knowing that it would be a kind of continuation of the first movie, its wonderful cast, and the possibility of seeing moments of Roman history seemed to fit together in perfect harmony, but not everything was as I expected.

Gladiador II: Un festín de acción y entretenimiento sin pretensiones.

Estos días de fiesta los sigo aprovechando para descansar y nada mejor que estar en cama y ver una buena película. Mi hijo mayor me dijo que ya era posible ver Gladiador II y sin dudarlo planeamos verla en familia, la verdad que tenía ya bastante tiempo esperando poder verla. Todo se debe al hype de las redes, saber que seria una especie de continuación de la primera película, su maravilloso elenco y la posibilidad de ver momentos de la historia romana parecía encajar en perfecta armonía, pero no todo fue como esperaba.

One of the big differences with the first movie is the political complexity. The villain of the first was the emperor, and it was the typical fight of good against evil, the hero with little managing to defeat the villain with all the resources and power. In this second installment, the role of villain is strangely divided into several parts: at the beginning, General Acasius because he kills Hanno's wife, then the two Roman emperors, and then the slave trader Macrinus.

Una de las grandes diferencias con la primera película es la complejidad política. El villano de la primera fue el emperador y era la típica lucha del bueno contra el malo, el hero con poco que logra vencer al al malvado con todos los recursos y poder. En esta segunda entrega el rol de villano se reparte extrañamente en varias partes, al comienzo el general Acasius porque mata a la esposa de Hanno, luego los dos emperadores romanos y luego el esclavista Macrinus.

While I was watching the movie, I thought this was a big flaw and the story was going in the wrong direction, but as it progressed, I realized that it recovers its essence and becomes a piece of entertaining cinema. It’s a mistake to watch this movie wanting to see how Roman history is honored; this is about entertainment, crude and unpretentious. We’re talking about all the events, even the struggle for power of the empire, happening in the Colosseum.

Mientras veía la película pensaba que esto eran un gran fallo y la historia iba mal encaminada, pero conforme avanzo y me di cuenta que recupera su esencia y se convierta en una pieza de cine entretenido. Es un fallo ver esta película queriendo ver como se honra la historia romana, esta se trata de entretenimiento, burdo y sin complejos, hablamos de que todo los acontecimientos, incluso la lucha por el poder del imperio ocurren en el Coliseo.

The same character of Denzel Washington, Macrinus, says it in the movie: "The greatest temple built by the Romans is the Colosseum." The plot shows us a people tired of their rulers and the misery they live in, but enjoying the "entertainment" they receive in this place. You spend the 2 and a half hours of the movie witnessing most of the events in this place, and the truth is, it's not boring, even if the terrible CGI or the poor dialogue is very noticeable; everything becomes unimportant because it's pure entertainment.

El mismo personaje de Denzel Washington, Macrinus, lo dicen el la pelicula: "el más grande templo construido por los romanos es el Coliseo". La trama nos muestra a un pueblo hastiado de sus gobernantes y de la miseria que viven, pero gozando del "entretenimiento" que reciben en este lugar. Pasas la 2 horas y media de película presenciando la mayoría de loa acontecimientos en este lugar, y la verdad no aburre, aunque sea muy notorio el pésimo CGI, o los pobre diálogos, todo pasa sin importancia porque es puro entretenimiento.

Although the movie strives to give continuity to Marcus Aurelius's dream of Rome, and they mention it many times, along with the epic idea that the grandson himself has arrived to rescue that dream and carry it out, the attention is focused more on how that will happen. I'm referring to the fights, the combats, how to defeat the bad guys, and how the characters connect with those of the first movie, how the bad guys are more detestable, and you want someone to quickly beat them. It's a show from beginning to end.

Aunque la película se esfuerza por dar continuidad al sueño de Roma de Marco Aurelio, y lo mencionan muchas veces, junto a la épica idea que el nieto mismo a llegado para rescatar ese sueño para llevarlo a cabo, la atención se centra mas en el como eso pasara, me refiero a las luchas, combates, como vencer al malo y como se van conectando los personajes con los de la primera película, como los malos son más detestables y quieres que alguien rápidamente les gane, es un show de principio a fin.

What cannot be denied is the quality of the acting. I really liked seeing Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta alongside Fred Hechinger as Caracalla; together they do a very good job of detestable psychopath villains. Pedro Pascal, although he doesn't appear much, does his role very well. Paul Mescal, our gladiator, doesn't do too badly either, but Denzel Washington steals the show; his charisma fits perfectly into his character of an ambitious man who plans from the shadows what no one expects.

Lo que si no se puede negar es la calidad de la actuación, me gusto mucho ver a Joseph Quinn como el emperador Geta junto a Fred Hechinger como Caracalla, juntos hacen muy bien de villanos psicópatas detestables. Pedro Pascal aunque no aparece mucho hace muy bien su papel, Paul Mescal nuestro gladiador tampoco lo hace tan mal, pero el show se lo roba Denzel Washington, su carisma encaja perfectamente en su personaje de hombre ambicioso que planea desde las sombras lo que nadie espera.

In conclusion, I think that the sum of all these aspects, as a formula for an unforgettable movie, came too late. 24 years after the first installment, it's not as spectacular. These are times of cinematic super productions that have left us astonished, so nothing surprises us anymore. This is old cinema, it's Sunday afternoon cinema that works perfectly well to entertain us and nothing more. It's not a story that will remain in our minds as one of the greatest movies of all time.

En conclusión creo que la suma de todos estos aspectos, como fórmula para una película inolvidable llegó muy tarde, 24 años después de la primera entrega ya no resulta tan espectacular, son tiempos de superproducciones cinematográficas que nos han dejado atónitos, así que ya cualquier cosa no nos sorprende, esto es cine viejo, es cine dominguero que funciona perfectamente bien para entretenernos y nada más, no es una historia que permanecerá en nuestras mentes como una de las más grandes películas de todos los tiempos.

Recientemente una vecina me regaló dos entradas para el cine, con la compra de 30$ en productos en una tienda conocida en mi ciudad te regalan dos entradas para el cine y como mi vecina no las iba a utilizar y para no perderlas me las dió, yo le había comentado que a nuestra familia nos encanta ir al cine. Nos fuimos en familia a Cines Unidos a ver la película el Gladiador 2, luego de comprar una entrada adicional y las golosinas ocupamos nuestros asientos en la sala de cine.

Escenarios y combates

Los escenarios de la película son majestuosos, a falta de otra palabra que pueda describirlos mejor. Recuerdo la primera arena a la que entró el protagonista, donde estaban los monos. Me recordó mucho a la primera arena donde entra Máximo, donde está el esclavista Próximo. Eran muy similares, quizás no las mismas pero muy parecidas.

El primero combate en la arena, así como aquel, fue muy emocionante, aunque en este caso los monos sí parecen de un videojuego, al menos así lo percibí yo en el cine, aunque pese a todo se veían geniales. Ni hablar del coliseo, tanto en el primer combate con el rinoceronte o en la lucha marítima. Esos dos combates fueron mis favoritos sin duda, indistintamente de los demás que hubo en la película.

Macrinus is amazing, it's impressive the way he simply takes over Senator Thraex's house, until he even becomes the Consul (I think it was like that) of emperor Caracalla.

The scene where he shows the decapitated head of Emperor Geta in front of the Senators is impressive and shows the level of acting that the actor has, besides the great character development he had...

Los personajes

Hubo variedad de personajes en la película, si bien el protagonista Lucius estuvo bueno, no le llega a los tobillos a lo que fue Maximo, simplemente no sentí empatía con él. Sentí más empatía con Acacius, quien murió y no completó su plan de liberar a Roma precisamente por ir a rescatar a Lucius. Acacius es un personaje que prometía, se veía imponente y era genial, a mi parecer, pero fue una lástima que terminara como terminó, al final simplemente quedó como un personaje más, en mi opinión...

Ahora, quien sí pienso yo que se roba el Show es Macrinus. A mi me encantan las películas donde actúa Denzel Washington, es un actor increíble y muy bueno. Recuerdo por ejemplo Inside Man o Unstoppable, dos películas que siempre repito aunque las haya visto varias veces.

Macrinus es increíble, es impresionante la manera en como simplemente se adueña de la casa del Senator Thraex, hasta que incluso se vuelve el Consul (creo que era así) del emperador Caracalla.

La primera película, pese a los efectos especiales de la época, fue magistralmente bien hecha, sobre todo al momento de mostrar el Coliseo, una obra de arte en mi opinión.

Sin embargo, esta le gana en demasía al compararla con diversas escenas, como la del combate inicial o la batalla naval, incluso me encantó la escena del rinoceronte, es algo realmente que me impresionó. La producción va tomando cierto ritmo, empezando algo lenta, pero después toma otro curso desde ese primer instante que las batallas comienzan a aparecer y esa ahí donde está segunda entrega puede fallar y las críticas que no son nada buenas, ya que es prácticamente lo mismo y para mí muy predecible lo qué ocurre, ya que lo vimos en la primera entrega, donde cae batalla irá subiendo de dificultad y esa conspiración que existe que no puede ganar los que está dando cada gota de sudor, a pesar de que la sangre y muertes siempre van a estar allí. Sin embargo, no podemos dejar por fuera cada batalla que le toca pasar a este gran personaje y demostrar que es capaz de poder salir de una manera más inteligente.

Los efectos y las escenas de esta película son muy interesantes y muy bien trabajados, ya que permite que sea muy realista y vivir una experiencia desde que entran en ese espacio de combate y por esa parte muy bien logrado son mejor que la primera parte por el mismo tema de la tecnología y como lograron llevarlo a otro nivel. Una película que no fuera lo mismo sin las batallas, ya que permite llevar esto a otro nivel y darle más motivación, además una de las cosas interés cuando las personas de alto nivel no están de acuerdo y es allí donde salen los castigos, aparece la traición y sobre todo algo de gran valor la familia, por ende es una combinación de elementos que permite seguir disfrutando de esa gran experiencia.

A pesar de ser parecida que la primera parte, lo que más predomina y lo más nombrado es la presencia de grandes actores en la entrega y cada uno de ellos aporta un valor importante para así poder desarrollar la aventura y la acción de todo esto. Uno de ellos es el gran Ridley Scott, quien con mucha valentía y rencor asume esa gran responsabilidad y con ese carácter que tiene permite ir avanzando. Además cada batalla que le toca hacer su vida está en juego y por ende el mínimo error que cometa le puede jugar en contra. Un par de actores muy buenos, como lo es el padre, y a pesar de ser un personaje importante, tiene que afrontar ciertas situaciones que los llevará a la batalla en ese gran coliseo.

• Too much fan service: One thing is to make references to the first film, but in Gladiator II they wanted to make us feel emotional with too many aspects of Maximus and this seems to me to have taken away from its originality.

• The Performances: I didn't find them very memorable, this is just my personal opinion. I've heard that some people liked Denzel's performance, but for me it was Denzel being Denzel, I think he was very comfortable playing Macrinus. I'm left with John Hannah's performance in the Spartacus series who was also a slave buyer and Gladiator owner with political ambitions, I think that performance was better.

• Esperaba que Lucio fuese interpretado por el actor Spencer Treat Clark que le dio vida en la película original Gladiador, que ya ha crecido y podía representarlo. Siento que hubiese sido un gran regalo para los espectadores. Desconozco las razones que tuvieron para elegir en su lugar a Paul Mescal, que lo hizo bien y lo hicieron lucir como sería físicamente el hijo de Maximus, pero creo que de proponérselo también hubiesen hecho lo mismo con el actor original.

• La Exageración con la utilización de animales: Utilizaron monos, creo que supuestamente eran babuinos, pero estaban muy diferentes, casi irreconocibles. Además, de incluir tiburones grandes y agresivos en las batallas navales.

• Demasiado fan service: Una cosa es hacer guiños o darnos referencias de la primera película, pero en Gladiador II querían hacernos emocionar con demasiados aspectos a Maximus y esto me parece que le restó originalidad.

• Las Actuaciones: No las vi muy memorables que se digan, esto es muy mi opinión personal. He escuchado que a algunos les gustó la actuación de Denzel, pero para mí era Denzel haciendo de Denzel, creo que fue muy cómodo representar a Macrinus. Me quedo con la actuación de John Hannah en la serie Espartacus quien también fue un comprador de esclavos y dueño de Gladiadores con ambiciones políticas, creo que esa actuación estuvo mejor.

Honestly, I don't recommend it. If someone watches it, I think they can have conversation topics about the aspects I mentioned in this post that I "liked" and "didn't like" and maybe learn some aspects about the history of Rome as well. But as a movie I don't recommend it.

In this genre, as I mentioned, I prefer Troy a thousand times, and the Spartacus Blood and Sand series. But this is just my opinion, maybe this movie will even be valued and considered by the Academy for an award, that is just my opinion as a spectator and movie fan.

Honestamente, no la Recomiendo. Si alguien la ve, creo que puede tener temas de conversación sobre los aspectos que mencioné en esta publicación que "Me gustaron" y que "No me gustaron" y tal vez aprenda también de alguno aspectos sobre la historia de Roma. Pero como película no la recomiendo.

De este género como les mencioné prefiero mil veces a Troya, y la serie Espartacus Sangre y Arena. Pero esta es solo mi opinión, tal vez esta película sea incluso la Academia la valore y considere para ser premiada, ésa es solo mi opinión como espectadora y aficionada al cine.

It's always difficult to make a sequel, especially when the original has been very successful. It's not just a question of box office expectations or audience reception, but also of preserving the spirit of the story, of the characters that made that film what it was. But when the center of the original film, the protagonist, is not continued in the sequel, it becomes even more difficult to create a story that is on par with that one.

Siempre es difícil hacer una secuela, especialmente cuando la obra original ha tenido mucho éxito. No es sólo un tema de expectativas de taquilla o de recepción del público, sino también de conservar el espíritu de la historia, de los personajes que hicieron que esa película fuese lo que fue. Pero cuando el centro de la película original, el protagonista, no tiene continuidad en la secuela, se hace todavía más cuesta arriba conseguir una historia a la misma altura, una que resulte equiparable a esa.

Gladiator is one of the best films, not only of the last twenty-five years but also of the history of cinema, largely thanks to Russell Crowe's impeccable performance and that heroic character that is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North... and well, you know how it goes. Within these great epic films, characters like Leonidas in 300, William Wallace in Braveheart, or Maximus himself in Gladiator are unrepeatable for their strength, their dedication and especially their sacrifice. The death of the hero elevates him in the eyes of the public who mourns his loss but is grateful for his fight and elevates him almost as a deity; 300 men fought against the Persians, but their king was only one; one who was worth the other 299. So from the start, Gladiator II had to face a major challenge: the absence of Maximus. Added to this is the fact that 24 years have passed since the release of Gladiator, which has served to further mythologize the film as a cinematic - and narrative - gem that is very difficult to match. And finally, we also have the disappointment of director Ridley Scott's previous film, the biopic Napoleon, which was criticized for the lack of a better script and for a large number of historical inaccuracies. Gladiator II is also more or less a historical film, making use of real names and places, which in this case were used quite freely.

Dentro de estas grandes películas épicas, personajes como Leonidas en 300, William Wallace en Braveheart, o el propio Maximus en Gladiator son irrepetibles por su fuerza, su entrega y en especial su sacrificio. La muerte del héroe lo eleva ante los ojos del público que lamenta su pérdida pero agradece su lucha y lo encumbra casi como una deidad; 300 hombres pelearon contra los persas, pero su rey fue uno solo; uno que valía por los otros 299. Así que de partida, Gladiator II debía enfrentar un desafío mayúsculo: la ausencia de Maximus. A ello se suman los 24 años que pasaron desde el estreno de Gladiator y que han servido para mitificar aún más la película como una joya cinematográfica - y narrativa - muy difícil de igualar. Y por último también tenemos lo decepcionante que fue la película anterior del director Ridley Scott, la biopic Napoleon, que fue criticada por falta de un mejor guión y por una gran cantidad de imprecisiones históricas. In a nutshell, the plot of Gladiator II is summed up in the story of Hanno (Paul Mescal), a soldier from the city of Numidia who falls in battle before the might of the Roman army, led by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal). In the battle, Hanno loses his wife and is captured as a slave and then sold to a gladiator merchant named Macrinus (Denzel Washington) who makes him fight for his benefit in the coliseum by promising him that he will deliver to him the head of General Acacius, responsible for the disappearance of his people and the death of his wife.

That being said, it's a typical story of the weak against the powerful, yet another revenge story where the hero is full of anger and pain, but it still seems right next to the abuses and tyrannies of the rulers, in this case the brothers Geta and Caracalla, who don't think about the welfare of their people, but about their own amusement. So far, so good, it's not a very original story, but it could have worked as an epic struggle. The problem was how to link this film to the prequel, and my question is, was there a need to do so? Couldn't they have told a story independent of that one? The fact is that they didn't want to do that, but preferred to frame these events just 16 years after the death of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the first film and connect them to the protagonist. Because Hanno is not Hanno; he is Lucius, the son of Lucila... and Maximus. From what is shown in the film, it seems that Hanno does not remember it, or does not know it (but how could he not know if he was twelve years old when the previous film ended?), but at first he hates Rome for bringing destruction everywhere and ends up waging a kind of crusade for the salvation of the empire (?); in a conversation with his mother Lucila, who recognizes him (how? just maternal instinct?) Hanno speaks to her out loud and denies his mother and Rome, but then forgives her and hugs her (?) and when he finally has the opportunity to sign his revenge and kill General Acacius, he doesn't do it: he recognizes him as the hero that he is (?)

Dicho así, se trata de una historia típica del débil contra el poder, una historia más de venganza en la que el héroe está lleno de ira y de dolor, pero sigue pareciendo justo al lado de los abusos y las tiranías de los gobernantes, en este caso los hermanos Geta y Caracalla, que no piensan en el bienestar de su pueblo, sino en su propia diversión. Hasta allí, bien, no es una historia muy original, pero podía haber funcionado como lucha épica. El problema era como enlazar esta película con la precuela, y mi pregunta es ¿había necesidad de hacerlo? ¿no podían haber contado una historia independiente de aquella? El caso es que no quisieron hacer eso, sino que prefirieron enmarcar estos eventos apenas 16 años después de la muerte del emperador Marco Aurelio en la primera película y conectarlas con el protagonista. Porque Hanno no es Hanno; es Lucius, el hijo de Lucila... y de Maximus. Por lo mostrado en el film, parece que Hanno no lo recuerda, o no lo sabe (pero ¿cómo no va a saberlo si tenía doce años cuando terminó la película anterior?), pero al principio odia a Roma por llevar la destrucción a todas partes y acaba librando una especie de cruzada para la salvación del imperio (?); en una conversación con su madre Lucila, quien lo reconoce (¿cómo? ¿sólo instinto maternal?) Hanno le habla en voz alta y reniega de su madre y de Roma, pero luego la perdona y la abraza (?) y cuando finalmente tiene la oportunidad de firmar su venganza y matar al general Acacius, no lo hace: lo reconoce como el héroe que es (?)

Pedro Pascal's character is interesting because he's a soldier in the service of Rome who questions his emperors and wants the best for the people. In addition, he is Lucila's new husband and that puts him on the side of the good guys. Denzel Washington's character is quite intriguing, somewhat unpredictable at times (for his acquaintances, but not for the spectators who know how to recognize this type of character) and much of the central plot is woven thanks to his interventions. Needless to say, the acting of the three protagonists is wonderful, both Denzel and Pedro and Paul Mescal himself act quite well.

El personaje de Pedro Pascal resulta interesante por ser un soldado al servicio de Roma que a su vez cuestiona a sus emperadores y que quiere lo mejor para el pueblo. Además, es el nuevo esposo de Lucila y eso lo pone en el lado de los buenos. El personaje de Denzel Washington es bastante intrigante, algo impredecible a veces (para sus conocidos, no para los epectadores que saben reconocer a este tipo de personajes) y mucho del centro de la trama se teje gracias a sus intervenciones. Sobra decir que la actuación de los tres protagonistas es maravillosa, tanto Denzel como Pedro y el propio Paul Mescal actúan bastante bien.

But the latter was let down by the scriptwriters. Hanno is a cliché character, with a few interesting moments, but he doesn't have the strength of a Maximus, or a Leonidas. I believe Hanno as an army leader, as a great warrior, but not as an heir to the throne of Rome, not as a man worthy of wearing Maximus' armor no matter how much of his blood runs through his veins. If we add to that Mescal's Irish accent (which I like a lot, but which is out of place here), the scenes in which it seems that the editing was very abrupt (as if they had filmed a lot more dialogue and had taken it out of the final shot) and the constant reinforcement of the connection between this film and its prequel (as if by mentioning Maximus a lot, or showing scenes from that film, one could magically make this sequel a better film), Gladiator II is an entertaining film, with good fight and battle scenes and little else. I didn’t look into whether it’s historically correct in what it tells, but it’s sure to have more than one flaw in that area (whose idea was it to put sharks in the Coliseum? Sharks? Yes, sharks!) and it’s a shame because they really managed to bring together three great actors for the central roles, who performed wonderfully well, but who in my opinion, deserved a better script, and Maximus deserved a better heir. Pero a este último le fallaron los guionistas. Hanno es un personaje cliché, con uno que otro momento interesante, pero no tiene la fuerza de un Maximus, o un Leonidas. Me creo a Hanno como líder de un ejército, como un gran guerrero, pero no como un heredero al trono de Roma, no como un hombre digno de portar la armadura de Maximus por mucha sangre suya que le corra por las venas. Si a eso le sumamos el acento irlandés de Mescal (que a mí me gusta mucho, pero que aquí queda fuera de lugar), las escenas en las que parece que la edición fue muy abrupta (como si hubieran filmado mucho más diálogo y lo hubieran sacado de la toma final) y el constante reforzamiento de la conexión entre esta película y su precuela (como si por mencionar mucho a Maximus, o mostrar escenas de aquella cinta, se pudiera por arte de magia hacer de esta secuela una película mejor), Gladiator II resulta una película que entretiene, que tiene buenas escenas de lucha y de batalla y poco más. No investigué si es históricamente correcta en cuanto a lo que cuenta, pero de seguro que tendrá más de una falla en ese terreno (¿de quién fue la idea de meter tiburones en el Coliseo? ¿tiburones? sí, ¡tiburones!) y es una lástima porque realmente lograron juntar a tres grandes actores para los papeles centrales, quienes actuaron maravillosamente bien, pero que en mi opinión, merecían un mejor guión, y Maximus merecía un mejor heredero, ¿ya vieron Gladiator II? ¿qué les pareció? Hanno es vendido para ser gladiador y negocia con su dueño el que algún día le arregle una pelea con Marcus Acacius para vengarse. Lo que no sabe nuestro héroe es que el general actúa bajo mandato de los emperadores Geta y Caracalla y que sus ideales son los mismos del exiliado: devolver el poder al senado y la gloria a Roma. Since I knew that Paul Mescal would be the new protagonist of Gladiator 2, I was very excited with the idea of the movie even though I am not a big fan of the action genre, because the Irishman is one of my favorite actors, he won my heart with "Normal People" and also proved to be an excellent actor with "After sun" and "All of us strangers". And I'm not going to lie to you, the first thing I had to do was to watch Gladiator 1 to understand all the lore and I really liked it, so the excitement to see its sequel with the same director Ridley Scott and a first class cast: Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Josep Quinn, Connie Nielsen with the already mentioned Mescal, had me pretty excited. Debo decirles que la película es históricamente incorrecta, así que debe verse con esa programación mental, porque sino van a sufrir. De hecho, hay que verla con ojos de realismo mágico de García Márquez porque las cosas se ponen un poco "delulu" entre babuinos que parecen zombies por el CGI malo, luchas contra rinocerontes y tiburones en el coliseo. Que ojo, algunas de estas cosas si pasaron, los gladiadores lucharon contra muchas bestias de diferente índole pero la ejecución, se siente un poco extraña. Ahora bien, con respecto a las luchas cuerpo a cuerpo y las escenas de guerra no tengo queja alguna, todo está muy bien logrado, la escena de la toma de Numidia en barco al principio de la película es el aperitivo perfecto para ver como sera la pelicula, se nota la experticia de Scott. El diseño de vestuario y maquillaje son dignos del Imperio, y aunque en cierto punto se siente caricaturesco en vez de restar, es un elemento que suma para que entendamos la magnitud de lo que fue Roma en su etapa dorada.

El film también se apoya en actuaciones increíbles, destacan Paul Mescal que logro un Gladiador con el que de alguna forma puedes conectar porque está más cerca de los humanos que de los dioses y eso le da un giro diferente a la historia que buscar repetir lo de la pelicula original, la otra actuacion muy sobresaliente es la de Denzel Washington, un papel que al principio no se siente tan complejo termina siendo la clave en la película.

I must tell you that the movie is historically incorrect, so you must watch it with that mental programming, because otherwise you are going to suffer. In fact, you have to watch it with García Márquez's magic realism eyes because things get a little "delulu" between baboons that look like zombies because of the bad CGI, fights against rhinoceroses and sharks in the coliseum. Which mind you, some of these things did happen, the gladiators fought many different kinds of beasts but the execution, it feels a bit strange. Now, with respect to the melee and war scenes I have no complaints, everything is very well done, the scene of taking Numidia by boat at the beginning of the film is the perfect appetizer to see how the movie will be, you can see Scott's expertise. The costume and makeup design are worthy of the Empire, and although at some point it feels cartoonish rather than detracting, it is an element that adds to our understanding of the magnitude of what Rome was in its golden age. The film also relies on incredible performances, Paul Mescal stands out as a Gladiator with whom you can somehow connect because he is closer to humans than to gods and that gives a different twist to the story that seeks to repeat the original film, the other very outstanding performance is that of Denzel Washington, a role that at first does not feel so complex ends up being the key to the film.

Una de las cosas que no me gustó tanto, es que hay subtramas que le restan importancia a la historia principal y se pierde un poco la parte heroica de Lucio, así que este no brilla en todo en todo su esplendor y también, que en un afan de replicar la historia de Maximo, Lucio no tiene una esencia per se.

A mí la película honestamente me encantó, estuve muy entretenida sus 148 minutos de duración y a pesar de que si pone tan "delulu" pues funciona, es la redencion perfecta para Ridley Scott después del fiasco de Napoleón, recomiendo que vayan a verla, le doy 4/5.

P.D.: Siempre me parecerá super curioso que este señor haya dirigido Thelma y Louise, una película TAN bien lograda pero que se aleja del resto de sus trabajos.

One of the things I didn't like so much, is that there are subplots that detract from the main story and the heroic side of Lucio is lost, so he doesn't shine in all his splendor and also, in an effort to replicate Maximo's story, Lucio doesn't have an essence per se. I honestly loved the movie, I was very entertained by its 148 minutes of duration and even though it's so "delulu" it works, it's the perfect redemption for Ridley Scott after the fiasco of Napoleon, I recommend you to go see it, I give it 4/5. P.S.: I will always find it super curious that this gentleman directed Thelma and Louise, a film SO well done but that is a far cry from the rest of his work.
