  1. Time To Take A Look At The Beauty That Is GTO@youloseagain674d

    11460l.jpg

    Evening folks

For tonight's post, we are taking a look at GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka. Now this is a great manga but also a great anime series.

It involves 22 year old Eikichi Onizuka, who is an ex biker gang leader. Known as the Conqueror of Shonan and also a virgin! He has the dream to become a high school teacher, in fact, the greatest high school teacher in the whole of Japan. His aim is not for the right reasons though, he wants have a loving teenage wife when he is an old man. That intro is literally the whole back story and yes it is a bit creepy, but once you get past the creepiness it is actually a really funny series. Between the Manga and the Anime they both have their strengths and overall I love them equally.

Eikichi lands the job as the homeroom teacher for class 3-4 at the rather posh and famous Holy Forest Academy. The class is infamous and has a serious distaste for teachers.

    13490l.jpg

The class crack on with plenty of tactics to try to get Eikichi to quit his job. Psychological warfare is their trademark for trying to get rid of their teachers. Eikichi soaks this abuse up and takes it all on the chin. His fun loving nature starts to bring his students on side, add in his eccentric charm and character then all sorts of entertainment happens. From suplexing the schools Headteacher, to jumping off the school building to save one of his students.

I wholeheartedly recommend both the Manga and Anime. If you have already checked them out, please let me know what you think. If not, then you are in for a top tier series and I say check it out now!

Here we are, once again gathered and ready to share what we are so passionate about, those old and new series that have had some meaning throughout our lives. Greetings to all the community and platform in general, today I will bring you a new retro segment, let's call it vintage to not feel so old those of our generation 😅, with you a series that as I express in the title came to me in a very random way, those that so much research on the internet you cross and just give play those first chapters and as you progress in the story you thank those coincidences of life that give you those moments to enjoy something that for no reason you expected.

Now, before continuing I must clarify that the visualization of this series was already many years ago and I clarify this because currently there are certain very sensitive issues that are generators of controversy and differences of opinion, however at that time it was very common to meet with anime series like the one I share with you that rather than being a recommendation, it is more directed to tell anecdotes and my thoughts about this one, It is more directed to tell you anecdotes and my thoughts about this one, so if you decide to watch this series, watch it with comedy eyes, do not take anything seriously, in my opinion it only seeks to make fun of the typical cliché character that from time to time is missing in some other series.

Without further hesitation, this is the anime series "Great Teacher Onizuka" better known by its acronym "GTO", which as I already described is an old series very notorious this detail for its animation, which is based on a former member of a dangerous gang who decides to become a teacher but not for the healthiest reasons that can be 😅, the beloved professor Onizuka would have his reasons to make this decision and it is to try to flirt with his students, that is the typical perverted character who has no idea with the girls and everything always goes wrong.

This narrative based on a perverted character inclined to comedy has been used a lot, especially in old series, to mention one and not a little thing "Dragon Ball" that anime series that was part of our childhood, even in this was part of a character of this style and one with much relevance in the beginning of the story and is Master Roshi, ironically teacher of the prota Goku who had a certain problem with girls, but well.... Returning to the subject of Onizuka and leaving aside his problem, he will have serious problems with the subject of opting to be a teacher and his beginnings will be as a teacher for two weeks with the worst class of the school, a class full of delinquents including girls. This will come out unscathed in his style, executing another of the cliché in the anime world that is evangelization, changing the thinking of the evil one, only that in the case of Onizuka he will use all his knowledge as a former member of a criminal gang to get it.

As the story progresses and Onizuka continues in his quest to become a teacher, he will be involved in different situations which compensate his problem of perversions, the story of this anime will deal with issues such as bullying of course with a touch of humor as it is a comedy series, so if you look with tweezers in sections of the plot will find very useful messages outside the anime and this was what at the time made me continue watching the series.

Thus ends this micro story of how I enjoyed a series far from popularity, of those who stole the attention, however it had its good points as well as its bad points as I explained in the introduction of this post. Nowadays the sexualization of women in the series in general is sought to decrease and I agree with that, this element is used much as a strong point to make market and taken to the extreme is very wrong, but in this life we must see everything to judge ourselves, let's see it for what it is, a comedy, which seeks to entertain rather than educate.

With this I say goodbye but not before wishing you a happy day hoping to meet again with new or old works of animation, so we'll be seeing each other in a next opportunity!!!!

  3. GTO after years / GTO po latach@herosik1181d

    gto ENGe.jpg

A long time ago I promised one of my blog followers that I would write a separate, long text about GTO someday. I don't know if he still follows my blog today, but if so, I dedicate it to you. Unfortunately, this is the first case so far when I discuss the title without refreshing it myself. I should do it, but on the other hand, I have inspiration to write this text, and I don't think I will find time for it in 2024. As I've written several times, I want to watch AoT, a few animes, series, play a few games, read a dozen or so books by the end of 2024 (if anyone asks - I don't have a list, I have these titles in my head, and in the case of books, the list is broken down into several smaller) + do other things. Even though the lists plan 2 watch, plan 2 play etc. shortening more and more, I might not have such an opportunity in the future.

"Great Teacher Onizuka" is a very important series for me, although I rarely show it. The reason is simple - if the work is not finished, I suffer a lot when I can't get to know it to the end (that's why I don't touch the HxH manga beyond the anime and the same with "Nana"). It is true that GTO has been completed, but since we haven't gotten a sequel for so many years, we probably won't get it anymore. Well, unless one day we get information about the return of the series, as in the case of "Initial D" (its spiritual successor will be released this year), "Shaman King", "Spriggan", "Slam Dunk" or another popular classic of its time. I pray for it a lot. Why is this anime important to me? Because, like FMA, it accompanied me in an important period of my life - when my mother died in an accident. Both of these anime fit my situation perfectly, even one of my friends asked me if I was joking (you know, I like black and provocative humor). The FMA tells, among other things, about dealing with the grief of losing your mom, and GTO is an excellent story about the life of a single guy who has made too many mistakes in his life and is trying to be a good person. I say that because Eikichi Onizuka was a member of a biker gang. While we haven't seen him do any really bad things (at least in the anime), we know from his stories that he wasn't a saint, and he didn't mean peeking up girls' skirts or using slot machines.

    g0.jpg

    g1.jpg

So, a 22-year-old virgin spying on schoolgirls and accidentally bumps into one of them. He starts flirting with her, asks if she'll go on a date with him and... she agrees. Onizuka thinks that tonight she will lose her virginity and experience pleasure between the young girl's legs... And here comes her ex, who is an old and ugly teacher, but he has "that something" that makes the student still love him. Eikichi, seeing how they feel for each other, decided to become a teacher himself. He tries very hard, but unfortunately - you can see his deficiencies in education and teaching experience, but he makes up for it with his skills that he acquired during his turbulent youth - he knows how to talk to children who also had or still have problems and has a high emotional intelligence. And besides, despite his bad-boy style, he is conscientious about his work and is moral. After he finished his "probationary period" (or should I say, it was the only school that would accept him after he failed the state exam) at the first school, he went to the next one, where he will teach until the end of the anime. Perhaps this story does not bode well for you, but it is only an appearance. At the beginning I thought it would be a stupid comedy, but the plot of this romance perfectly shows that the author can (just like the creator of "City Hunter", Hiromu Arakawa, or Akira Toriyama, how he still cared about DB) perfectly convey emotions through with black and white comics. What's more, just like Tsukasa Hojo and the author of FMA, she can show the full spectrum of emotions in ... a non-standard way? I don't know if this term is adequate, but it definitely stands out against this background. It is true that today I do not remember most of these scenes, but it stuck in my head that many of them I was moved and delighted with the skills of the manga creator. GTO is a damn good and life Spice of Life.

I will not use adjectives to say how well it turned out, because as I wrote, I saw GTO a long time ago (however, if I refresh this anime in the future, if possible, I promise that I will write a sequel to this text). I guess I'd say GTO deserves a +8/10 rating on this. Starting with the teaching profession - although I have some minor reservations about Onizuka (the biggest ones being the lack of education and too little emphasis on developing students in terms of imparting knowledge to them), they are not very big. Of course, the lack of knowledge is a bit disturbing, but as my old friend once said, who has a doctorate in history and experience in martial arts, technique and knowledge can be made up, worse with natural talent, reflexes and the right mentality, without which we will be much better off. harder. Because the teacher is not only for teaching, he can influence the upbringing of the child (I know it's a theory, especially when the classes are too overloaded with students, but still, the teacher has some possibilities) and be an authority. Similarly, a priest is not only a priest, but he can also be a psychologist, spiritual support or teacher, if he has the appropriate competences. A teacher, like a Priest or a parent, must balance being a senior colleague (or someone he can confide in if the word "mate" in this context bothers you) to turn to with a problem, and a disciplined mentor. The knowledge and passion for the profession that Onizuka has can't be given by any school in the world, it can be gained through life experience and direct contact with people, and in the case of passion... It has to come straight from your heart. Maybe I exaggerated a bit with the fact that no school will give this knowledge, I mean that the teacher, due to his profession (or rather his limitations), will take more time. I don't remember exactly what the headmistress of the school where Eikichi worked the longest said (it's about the situation when Onizuka's colleagues once again wanted to throw him out), but I think she meant, among others, what I wrote earlier. Especially in the context of difficult youth, who sent many teachers to a faster retirement or to a closed institution (e.g. in my city, at least one teacher became very detached from reality, so much so that she had to go to a closed institution. The class that led to this, was the hotbed of one of the worst pathologies in my area.), and in this field Onizuka is great! Each of his classes was described as problematic, he also got one that rejected every teacher and Onizuka was the only one who could tame them and gain their respect.

    g2.webp

    g3.jpg

Expanding on the previous paragraph, the anime also shows another aspect very well. I will deliberately simplify it because the details may vary from profession to profession, but the general mechanism is the same. The best defender of the company's network (or its essential element) is the hacker. The best terrorist or counter-terrorist is the counter-terrorist or terrorist (or a person who can think like him - because in this case, expert skills are not so important, they are more general issues that can be acquired in other ways). The best forum moderator will be a guy who used to troll himself. As I said, it's about mental-state and know-how, which are supposedly basic things, supposedly very obvious to every person, but just like in the case of martial arts, such things should be part of a person's personality. They should flow with the blood in the veins, a man should live by them, which does not mean that he must mindlessly devote himself to work, like a workaholic. And without daily practice, it is impossible to do. Of course, there are other ways to be good, but if you want to be really good at this, what I mentioned earlier is essential.

The series also shows very well that responding to aggression with aggression (even in verbal form) is wrong. Except when a peaceful attempt to solve a problem is certain to fail, which was also demonstrated to us by the teacher. I noticed this after listening to an interview with a prison guard some time ago. He said that even if a person is problematic, calmness combined with discipline works much better than yelling and authority resulting from a higher position. Of course, sometimes it needs to be used, but it's better to try other methods first - then we can get an ally, not an enemy or (at best) a person who will respect us only because of the possibilities that authority has, not because of his attitude or authority position occupied by him. Even the most recalcitrant students, whether it's the classic bully or the more intelligent ones who can influence other students or work undercover. Such someone is Urumi Kanzaki, an extremely intelligent, beautiful and charismatic girl. From the beginning, she made cruel jokes about her teacher, but at some point, she changed her attitude. She stated non-ironicly (although I think she wasn't entirely sure of it at first) that spending time with Onizuka was quite enjoyable. Her attitude changed so much that at one point, you could get the impression that she was infatuated with him. I didn't see this action, because I don't know the comic, but from what my old friend told me, after Onizuka saved her life, she put his hand on her breasts as a thank you.

    g5.jpg

    g4.png

    g6.jpg

I also really liked the suicide plot at the very beginning of the anime. Noboru wanted to kill himself because he was so small that even women could beat him in a 1vs1 fight. He was fed up with people making fun of him, so he decided to end his supposedly miserable life. I don't remember the exact context of this situation, and I understood Onizuka's attitude 100% relatively recently, mainly thanks to one thread from "Steins; Gate" and a later conversation with my friend Kamil about it (thank you and Maciek for recommending this anime) - it's about this thread with that effeminate boy. We may not like things about people, but as long as they are not harmful to others, we should ignore such behavior and have a basic respect for the other person. If only because most of us exhibit some behavior or behaviors that may be funny to those around us. Onizuka showed his young friend that no matter what, you have to act like a man, even if you don't look like a pumped-up bruiser. Because masculinity is a character trait, not a visual issue. He also proved to him that everyone has both strengths and weaknesses. There are even more such "life lessons" in GTO, but unfortunately I forgot about them.

    g8.webp

    g7.jpg

As for the art and CGI, GTO was already ugly on release day. I was too young and inexperienced at the time to verify this, so I decided to check it out now. I don't know all the titles that came out in 1999. I've seen some of them, some I know from word-of-mouth reports from trusted colleagues, others I know only by name. Of the anime I've seen, I think every one looked better than GTO. I omit here "Ebichu", which is a simple comedy for adults, and "Excel Saga" (I don't know it, but if I remember correctly, my friends complained about its quality). It's not the level of "Berserk" season 2 (the one in CGI), which looks extremely disgusting, but I had a hard time not laughing at some episodes. And that was back in the days when I knew much less about line art, animation and CGI (I'm speaking as if I knew anything now...). It's different with music. It may not be an outstanding OST, but it fits the atmosphere of this story very well and generally maintains a good level. I won't tell you my favorite song, because while writing the text, I didn't like any of them enough to mention it (as usual, I listen to the soundtrack while writing the lyrics). I'm omitting the openings and endings here, because I listen to them very pleasantly to this day.

It's a pity that I'll never know the end of this story, unless someone comes up with a brilliant idea to remake it, as in the case of "Sailor Moon" (+ it will also earn money and enjoy high viewership). I plan to buy the whole comic someday, when I have excess cash that I won't have anything to do with. This is one of those titles that in my opinion did not deserve to be forgotten and I recommend watching it. I don't know if the pacing will be irritating these days, but even if it is, it's a comedy, so it'll be easier to live with.

Niestety, jest to pierwszy dotychczas przypadek, gdy omawiam tytuł bez odświeżenia go sobie.

GTO jest cholernie dobrym i życiowym Spice of Life.

To musi wynikać prosto z Twojego serca.

Byłem wtedy zbyt młody i zbyt mało doświadczony, by to zweryfikować, więc postanowiłem to teraz sprawdzić.

  4. A review of GTO - Great Teacher Onizuka@aurzeq1588d

    Plot

GTO is the story of Eikichi Onizuka, a nasty ex-gang leader and a depraved man. His only ambition is to become the best teacher of all time, and he has forgotten everything else in his life. The only problem is that he isn't interested in teaching at all! He simply wants to become a teacher so that he can marry one of his students and have a loving teenage bride.

Eikichi ultimately becomes the homeroom teacher of Holy Forrest Academy's class 3-4, after some struggle. Eikichi quickly understands, however, that this is not a usual class of students.

This class is made up entirely of misfits who routinely push their teachers to resign. But, as we can guess, Eikichi Onizuka isn't one to give up easily!

    Eikichi Onizuka

To further grasp the type, let's sketch up a card: He is a motorbike rider and a member of the Shnan pair Oni-Baku, who spent his school years alternating between motorcycle raids and a thousand other things found in Shonan. After seeing an old teacher that meets with a young and beautiful student at a love hotel, he travels to Tokyo in GTO and decides to become a teacher at the private school Kissho, which also serves as his home. He is an avid smoker (you will almost always see him with a cigarette on his lips) and enjoys playing video games with the money he earns. Thanks to his past "story," he develops a teaching philosophy out of any plan, most likely illegal and surely unconventional.

    personaggi_gto.png

    Source

His determination is amazing, but most of all, it is overpowering! The students will go to any length to have him fired, just like so many other professors before him, but with no result! He is passionate about what he does and the good he can do for these youngsters, and he never stops! Onizuka is unjust, violent, and has no concept of legality, but he is far superior to any professor you may encounter in real life.

    An open critic

Despite its ironic, burlesque, and apparently demential tone, GTO is nothing more than a denunciation of Japan's asphyxiating and competitive society, as well as an attack on a school system that severely undermines children's psychophysical well-being by subjecting them to abnormal workloads and forcing them to compete with one another in order to outline a glimmer of hope in their future. Onizuka, who appears to be the least qualified person to teach children, is the voice of the impending need for a paradigm shift. Of course, he does not have huge cultural resources, but he will teach the boys not to have a superficial view of things, of people, because every one of us is the bearer of our own truth, and if society thinks you an idiot, a reject, it is itself in wrong.

    Cons

Having to mention some possible "flaws" of the manga & anime, some critics were skeptical about the style of some of the panels: the style, in general, refers to that type of shonen-manga that has (in Japan) as target readers men, possibly established in their job, and not really kids (but this is not a unanimous opinion). This kind of approach, which is exemplified by Onizuka's frequent "exaggerated facial expressions," does not sit well with certain critics, who find it more offensive than amusing. However, because such graphic choices always highlight moments of intense humor in the story, most people do not find it unpleasant or out of place; rather, they have grown accustomed to it to the point where, when certain comic situations are about to occur, the viewer anticipates them with pleasure: they are the moments of laughter on our side of the screen! Furthermore, even for those who find the situation unpleasant, it is difficult not to make us a more specific instance after viewing 5 or 6 episodes.

Another source of criticism for the production is the treatment of some very "dirty" concepts. For example, the first double episode contains various situations that appear to "lean" towards the masculine audience who thinks like Onizuka.

However, in the authors' defense, it must be mentioned that this was probably the most appropriate approach to portray Onizuka correctly, and as long as the proposed situations are not taken too seriously, the whole thing is still extremely entertaining. The rest of the series, however, does not continue in the same vein, never losing sight of the series' underlying ethos and eventually addressing a variety of actual (and interconnected) social issues.

    Conclusion

The series is really entertaining and makes you reflect on several issues that are a current burden for the scholastic system. GTO can be enjoyed in my opinion both with a lighter mind, not giving too much attention to the more "serious" stuff and laughing at all the crazy situations that happen, or trying to have a more serious approach and reflect on important thematics while having fun. It is a great anime, for sure in my top 10 of all times.

The characters are very different in both versions, the manga being the ones that are much better achieved and having great differences with their anime counterparts, so I will detail the ones that seemed more different to me:

    separador.png

    Eikichi Onizuka

He is the craziest teacher that you can imagine having very peculiar and questionable ways to teach, in both versions he is shown as a rather idiotic pervert but in the anime version they make him look much more naive and stupid, on the other hand his manga version Although he is also very stupid, at least he looks more serious and competent on many occasions, noticing those childish traits that are very noticeable in the anime less, but preserving his recklessness.

    separador.png

    Azusa Fuyutsuki

She is another school teacher like Onizuka but unlike this one she is a fairly average teacher who tries to teach something to her students, her anime version is quite annoying because her appearances are usually somewhat forced and adding a romance with Onizuka that feels out of place. The manga version of her is also attracted to him but she is not usually forcibly introduced and she presents a more independent character not always thinking of Onizuka and dealing with her own problems as well.

    separador.png

    Urumi Kanzaki

She is a genius student with an IQ of more than 200, having a superior intelligence often feels isolated being quite cold and manipulative. This is one of the characters that differ the most because in the anime he is only presented as someone manipulative and implacable without justifying the reason, in the manga apart from being justified it also gives rise to a fairly good evolution giving closure to his problems.

    separador.png

    Noboru Yoshikawa

This is undoubtedly the most different character between the versions, firstly in both versions he presents himself in the same way, being quite incompetent, dependent and unable to do things on his own. The big difference is that in the manga he becomes more independent and determined, being much less attached to Onizuka.

The drawing of the manga is simply beautiful full of lots of details, the anime continues as best it can this level of detail but its limitations are compensated with a simply wonderful sounding band that takes it to another level, so both versions are excellent in this pulled apart.

    separador.png

In the construction of the world is where one of the first differences between the versions is seen, both present us a scenario in which there are students who feel contempt for the teachers but the reason behind this resentment varies, being that of the darkest and best manga developed. Also in both versions a social criticism is maintained about how teachers despite having an invaluable profession also have the right to make mistakes simply because they are human, this was achieved in an excellent way in both versions transmitting the same message and leaving a clear idea of the same.

The plot is well done in both versions, however in the anime version it is noticeable how sometimes the jokes are told half in the sense that they were going to be more risque and were left as halftones, exactly the same happens with some situations in which they were darker and cruder in the manga and were softened for the animated version. As such, this is not an excessively serious problem but if it takes away that tone of seriousness that the manga gives, the above is also seen when serious situations arise and the anime places a joke out of place that ruins the moment, despite all this. In both versions everything is quite interesting but in the manga we must praise the fact that it also develops subplots with different characters which are just as interesting as the original, in turn these are loaded with absurd humor in industrial quantities. In anime this is also rarely done but they are not achieved as well or are as funny.

    Courtesy of SMASH MÉXICO

Something similar to the plot happens with the characters, in the manga certain moments are left so that the viewer can get to know them better, these being most of the time the only ones on stage to be able to use their protagonism in a good way, for its part the anime does not follow This guide, although if it tends to focus on a character so that it develops in some way, it tends to forcefully introduce Onizuka and others, taking away the role of the character, this is a problem because it does not feel that it is a chapter about the character but as a small section of the chapter for this one. Also here I will add a criticism directly to the manga that is the one who makes this mistake, in this one the other teachers are better explored to emphasize that they also have flaws, however it is absurd that he constructs those who explore them as perverts, implying that That is the only flaw that male teachers usually have, it would have been much more plausible to show someone with other problems with alcohol, drugs, etc., and thus get out of the pigeonhole of only perverted teachers.

Great Teacher Onizuka is a manga that is simply wonderful and very original that places us in a school environment with real problems that students and teachers may have, it has no reservations in exploring controversial issues that can happen in a school such as drugs, rapes, among others , building very interesting characters that are subjected to these elements, that is why it deserves a rating of 5,5 stars out of 7. For its part, the anime version tries to follow the course of the manga but the fact that it softens many themes makes that it is staying at half mast, although it is not horrible if you notice that it wanted to reach a more public by ignoring taboo topics that is why it deserves a rating of 4 stars out of 7. Which version is better? Obviously the manga but the anime despite having deficiencies and taking liberties that harm it is also good and pleasant so both versions are highly recommended.

It is a relatively old anime so the animation and soundtrack are not very remarkable, they have some moments in which they stand out but in the rest they are quite average. I will make a special mention for their first opening “Driver’s High” performed by L'Arc ~ en ~ Ciel because it is too epic and excellent not to do it.

I consider that this anime makes 2 important social criticisms, the first is in favor of the teachers and refers to the fact that they are human and have all the right in the world to make mistakes, although these have to be an example they can also be afraid , insecurity and problems which need not be judged differently than other individuals. The second criticism it makes is towards teachers who quickly despise students for their poor academic performance or for their behavior, the anime maintains a firm position that it is the duty of the teacher to fulfill his sacred work and support his students so that These can become better, because many times they do not have anyone who believes in them and that is what they need, if they did not have anyone they would be considered less or in the textual words of the anime "If everyone tells us that we are garbage, we must be because it is true ”.

Great Teacher Onizuka is a simply wonderful anime that not only provides comedy and dramatic moments but with its funny stories it leads us to reflection with many of the cases it raises, it has a very charismatic and excellent protagonist and average secondary characters. It's one of those unconventional anime that takes the risk of doing something different and succeeds perfectly.

A comedy anime, along with a realistic theme of the students' daily lives and even family life. Onizuka is a former member of a heavyweight gang in Shonan, being the former boss, but ends up becoming a master, fulfilling his dream. Let's say that GTO is the sequel to the famous street fighting manga Shonan Junai Gumi. A unique comedy is shown here, along with thousands of memes and references from other popular animations, however, the brilliance of this great work is based not only on the humor, but rather on the thousands of messages shown, serving as a life lesson with each episode.

Onizuka Eikichi, the main character, is a 22 year old boy who in his high school days was the leader of a motorcycle gang in Shonan, called Oni-Baku, and, is a black belt in karate yet still a virgin. After graduating from a fifth class university in Social Studies, he decided to go into teaching, even though he does not have the slightest aptitude for the position. With much sacrifice, Onizuka gets a job in a high school and thus becomes a teacher of a very problematic class. Using unconventional methods, he seeks to put his students in play, become friends, understand them and show them that a teacher also has feelings. He also loves to pressure his students to do his favors, besides being a great pervert. Taking the opportunity to see the girls in school uniforms and try to conquer Azusa Fuyutsuki, a teacher from the same school.

I will be honest, the soundtrack is a very high point of the play, simply because it coincides with the scenes, becoming exactly the kind of music that follows the premise offered by the plot, since it doesn't matter what kind of musical taste the person has, after all, the only thing that really matters is that the track manages to adapt to the certain events introduced in the anime , gaining a great climax. Its opening of the second season won the prize for the best opening in Japanese animation in 2000.

The animation may not be one of the best of its time, with simple landscapes and scenarios, following the traditional pattern of classic anime, nothing impressive, but make no mistake, the details and comic cartoons of the characters, manage to be incredible, especially the Onizuka, being an inexhaustible source of memes. Of the few fights shown, they even have a great job, of course, along with humor full of references. An interesting factor, actually, are the funny chases, running away from the gangs or even the police, showing a great exaggeration without equal. The artistic style is simple and functional.

I faithfully believe that for any type of anime in the comic genre, they must contain great situations and great characters. GTO manages to mix this recipe in an intelligent and exciting way, making us get to like the plot, showing us fun, loving, intriguing and pleasant situations.

The drama can be very convincing in thousands of aspects related to human life or even love affairs, where the teacher helps his students as he can, being that kind of person that any of us would want to exist in schools. Great Teacher Onizuka is a school anime totally different from the many modern titles, which manage to be melodramatic or artificial.

The Ecchi here, can be very light, really it is only in elegant moments, nothing much, following that cliché track of the cameras, that I found very interesting by the way, not being as attractive as others. The characters are so interesting, that their true personalities are only shown the moment Onizuka manages to change them.

Those who love comedy anime will love Great Teacher Onizuka. This anime is a great tribute to the teachers, I am sure that young people need teachers like Onizuka, in fact, the world needs a moral lesson from Onizuka.

  8. Great Teacher Onizuka Manga + Anime + Live Action Review@hououinkyouma3118d
    The Anime

GTO is an unrealistic school comedy about Onizuka Eikichi, age 22, a virgin and a former biker gang leader trying to become a high school teacher to hit on highschool girls but ending up as a homeroom teacher in a middle school class full of kids with issues who hate teachers. Basically it is fun seeing all the students who were against him at the start being converted to his side because of his antics and often violent solutions.

Once you accept that it is unrealistic you can enjoy it as something that became the very thing that it tried to make fun of. There used to be a genre of manga where a charismatic young teacher would teach life lessons to his students and help them fix their problems. GTO parodies this by making the protagonist perverted and violent ex-biker gang leader who is far from the ideal of that annoying stereotype of a young and idealistic teacher trying to change the his students and the way teaching is done for the better.

The music in the show is mediocre but not really that necessary in a comedy series like this. The opening and the ending themes are pretty good though. The animation has not aged that well and was never that spectacular to begin with but it didn't need to be.

From what I have said thus far it may sound like GTO is a one-man show, seeing the way that other characters react to his abnormal and yet honest manners is half of the fun.

I give this anime a 7 out of 10. It is one of the best anime comedies in that it is funny but also not without substance and yet you can't watch it seriously, it is too unrealistic and everything in the end goes well for Onizuka, there are no long term negative consequences for his actions.

Yes, he might get shot trying to save a student who previously didn't like him but a few episodes he will be as healthy and as inhumanely strong as ever, he will jump off a building to save a cynical and suicidal student and will convince them otherwise but in the end doesn't it feel that that since there are no real negative consequences doesn't it feel that the circumstance of some armed criminals kidnapping a student and students jumping off buildings with boxes and cars beneath them where Onizuka can save them and land without getting killed feel contrived.

The problem with manga with idealistic teachers trying to change students and schools that have gone bad around is that the whole world seems to be going their way, thus eliminating any tension and any agency of the characters and coming off as propaganda and yet GTO became the manga/anime most well known of the genre it tried parody. (I guess in a smaller way it's a bit like Dragonball starting off as a parody of Shonen tropes and then becoming the most well-known Shonen).

This is a show that you must watch for fun, but that made me sometimes make me feel 'Wouldn't it be fun if I had a teacher like Onizuka' obviously in reality he would just go to prison in no time but it is this feeling that GTO latches onto and then gets stuck.

    The Manga

The manga which is the source material for the anime and the live action series is still sort of ongoing through a spin-off manga, don't read the spin-off manga, it is just the same thing repeated with Onizuka and some other less interesting students. Just read the original GTO manga.

The backgrounds are nothing fancy but do the job, the same goes for the character art style. The jokes are more perverted than in the toned down anime, plus there is more smoking. The anime has its own original ending which is bad but not awful. The manga has more content but honestly I would advice you to watch the anime and then start reading the manga and not the other way around. The best should be kept for last.

Most of the arcs absent in the anime but present in the manga are the same thing repeated again but if there is one arc that makes reading the manga worth, it is that of the stalker teacher obsessed with Fuyutsuki and trying to use his stalking to get Fuyutsuki to like him. His character was much more developed in his case and the way his character arc progress was the most plausible, realistic and satisfying in GTO. There are tangible negative consequences to the stalker's actions despite his change of heart due to Onizuka nth pep talk. I might write a separate blog post about it but basically he gets caught and realizes that his pathetic sneakiness will get him nowhere except madness like his father... Onizuka trumps honest action over everything else but even this arc I feel suffers from lionizing Onizuka and his virtues too much too much.

    The 1998 Live Action

The thing with the live action is that it's not bad. It suffers from a shorter length to explore all the of the subplots of the characters but it does a pretty good job. In some ways it even corrects some of the flaws if the anime by allowing some growth in the relationship between Onizuka and Fuyutzuki (the hot teacher at the school who has a crush on Onizuka but never fucking admit it in the manga and the anime). In this live action they manage to cohabitate The reason that it can work is that GTO is a school anime and so not too many special effects have to be used like in the live action adaptations. Some changes have been done and the characters don't look as colourful and as unhinged as in the anime and manga but I believe that those were necessary for a proper transition into live action. It's only 12 episodes but covers most ground of the manga and anime which show how overstretched they are, to be fair it is a comedy and it has progress and a plot which is more than can be asked from most.

Don' t read the prequel manga of Onizuka being a bike gang leader. It is boring. Onizuka is not that cool as everything he does isn't so over the top.

    The 2012 Live Action

The 2012 live action however is just not up to par; Onizuka looks and acts like he is stupid. There are too many moments when the suspension of disbelief is broken. (The German supplex was pure cringe). On the bright side I think that this is more like Onizuka should look like rather than handsome guy in the older live action. I advise you not to watch this or to watch this last if you are hungry for more Onizuka. There's also a sequel to this live action series 'Onizuka in Taiwan' or something, I haven't watched it but it probably is more of the same.

I think there was also some live action movie of Onizuka going to the countryside but it is boring don' watch it.

    Final Thoughts

Onizuka's characters sees no development. He is a static charismatic character like say Sherlock Holmes. I know that Sherlock Holmes is presented as much more smarter than Onizuka but it's the same thing. Last time I checked the author of this manga is still milking this series but on the other hand I might read the continuation when there is nothing else to read. At least I know what I am going to get.
