Halloween II

It's been a couple of years since I've had the opportunity to see the original 1978 Halloween movie directed by John Carpenter for the first time. The disturbing story of Michael Myers managed to capture my attention quickly, not only by reinventing the slasher genre but by having the courage to do so with a beautiful and magnetic visual presentation, which denotes an artistic streak that is not usually the rule within the genre, but rather the exception.

Honestly, although I adore that film and consider it a master class in all that good horror should do, I also have a lot of appreciation for the recent mix of reboot and sequel with Halloween (2018), I have never taken the time from reviewing the "classic sequels", I understand that the current timeline has taken them out of canon so between that and the little critical appreciation they have for the first one, I didn't see much reason to see them.

However, feeling like closing the month of Halloween with a slightly more classic play, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to see the original sequel.

In terms of aesthetic presentation, production and spirit, Halloween II (released in 1981 and directed this time by Rick Rosenthal) is perhaps the closest to what we saw in 1978, this cannot help but create in me a series of conflicting thoughts.

Halloween II is in essence a direct sequel, picking up right at the time where the previous one ended and it can't help but feel like an epilogue without a lot of substance of its own.

Although all the visuals are very well managed and the presence of the same main cast solidifies the experience, the feeling of lack of need cannot be ignored with this sequel that never stops to evaluate if its own plot makes sense.

In hindsight, the original film's Cliffhanger turns out to be a double-edged sword, because while it is iconic and perfectly executed, we could also criticize it that it ended up producing a large number of sequels with a rather superfluous nature.

Although it is interesting in terms of pure plot to see what happened to Mike and Laurie (The original scream queen, my respects to the beautiful Jamie Lee Curtís), Halloween 2 cannot help but repeat the formula and it ends up hurting him. The new characters are charismatic but they fail to capture our interest or make us care and the deaths are visually shocking but nothing very innovative is brought to the table (Except for one that I loved a lot but I keep it so as not to spoil it).

The "horror" factor is very well taken in terms of direction and photography, the soundtrack is as neat as ever and we can't help but enjoy every frame, the ways in which Mike enters and exits the screen, the now classic "shot sequence ”and The organic step between calm and absolute panic make Halloween II a delight if one does not stop to observe the argumentative details.

It's not that it's bad, not at all ... in conjunction with the 1978 film it complements it very well, it does not clash tonally and it knows how to expand a little on the myth of one of the greatest characters in the entire world of horror.

My problems have more to do with a subjective aspect, the need for a film like this to exist in the first place and its little incentive to innovate.

Halloween II is pretty good, but quite unnecessary.

PS: At the beginning of the post I praise Halloween as a franchise and then, at the end, I criticize the production of "unnecessary" sequels, although this could be interpreted as a contradiction, I want to clarify that for me the Halloween version of 2018 has much more substance thematically and has the interesting addition of covering the passage of time within its little plot, serving not only as a canonical sequel but as a meta comment on the existence of the original film for so many years, I am curious to see what the other classic sequels may offer though.

Desde hace un par de años que tuve la oportunidad de ver por primera vez la película original de Halloween de 1978 dirigida por John Carpenter. La perturbadora historia de Michael Myers logró captar mi atención rápidamente, no solo al reinventar el género slasher sino al tener la valentía de hacerlo con una bella y magnética presentación visual, que denota una vena artística que no suele ser la regla dentro del género, sino más bien la excepción.

Honestamente, a pesar de que adoro ese filme y lo considero una master class en todo lo que debe hacer el buen terror, también le tengo mucho aprecio a la reciente mezcla de reboot y secuela con Halloween (2018), nunca me he tomado el tiempo de revisar las “secuelas clásicas”, entiendo que la línea de tiempo actual las ha sacado del canon así que entre eso y la poca apreciación crítica que tienen frente a la primera no veía muchas razones para verlas.

No obstante, sintiéndome con ganas de cerrar el mes de Halloween con una obra un poco más clásica sentí que era la oportunidad perfecta para ver la secuela original.

En términos de presentación estética, producción y espíritu, Halloween II (Estrenada en 1981 y dirigida esta vez por Rick Rosenthal) es quizá la más cercana a lo que vimos en 1978, esto no puede evitar crear en mi una serie de pensamientos conflictivos.

Halloween II es en esencia una secuela directa, que retoma justo en el momento donde finalizó la anterior y no puede evitar sentirse como un epílogo sin mucha sustancia propia.

Aunque todos los aspectos visuales están muy bien llevados y la presencia del mismo cast principal solidifican la experiencia, no se puede ignorar el sentimiento de falta de necesidad con esta secuela que nunca detiene a evaluar si su propia trama tiene sentido.

En retrospectiva el Cliffhanger de la cinta original termina resultando un arma de doble filo, porque si bien es icónico y está perfectamente ejecutado, también podríamos criticarle que terminó produciendo una gran cantidad de secuelas con una naturaleza bastante superflua.

Aunque es interesante en términos de argumento puro ver qué pasó con Mike y Laurie (La scream queen original, mis respetos a la hermosa Jamie Lee Curtís), Halloween 2 no puede evitar repetir la fórmula y le termina perjudicando. Los nuevos personajes son carismáticos pero no logran captar nuestro interés ni hacer que nos importe y las muertes son visualmente impactante pero no se trae nada muy innovador a la mesa (Salvo una que me encantó bastante pero me la guardo para no spoilear).

El factor “horror” está muy bien llevado en términos de dirección y fotografía, la banda sonora es tan prolija como siempre y no podemos evitar disfrutar cada frame, las formas en las que Mike entra y sale de la pantalla, los ahora clásicos “plano secuencia” y El paso orgánico entre la calma y el pánico absoluto hacen de Halloween II una delicia si uno no se detiene a observar los detalles arguméntales.

No es que sea mala, para nada… en conjunto con la película de 1978 le complementa muy bien, no desentona tonalmente y sabe expandir un poco en el mito de uno de los personajes más grandes de todo el mundo del horror.

Mis problemas tienen que ver más con un aspecto subjetivo, la necesidad de que un film como este exista en primer lugar y su poco incentivo a innovar.

Halloween II es bastante buena, pero bastante innecesaria.

PD: Al iniciar el post alabo Halloween como franquicia y luego, al final, critico la producción de secuelas “innecesarias”, aunque esto podría interpretarse como una contradicción, quiero aclarar que para mi la versión de Halloween de (2018) tiene muchísima más sustancia temáticamente y tiene el añadido interesante de cubrir el paso del tiempo dentro de su poco argumento, sirviendo no solo como una secuela canónica sino como un meta comentario sobra la existencia de la película original desde hace tantos años, me siento curioso por ver qué traen las demás secuelas clásicas.
