Long and fruitful career of Woody Allen reached its zenith in 1986 with Hannah and Her Sisters, the film that for many decades used to be his biggest box office success, accompanied by three “Oscars”. This comedy-drama follows two years in lives of characters related to artistic family that usually gathers at Thanksgiving in the home of elderly alcoholic actress Norma (played by Maureen O’Sullivan) and her philandering husband Evan (played by Lloyd Nolan). Their daughter Hannah (played by Mia Farrow) has four children and appears to be happily married to financial advisor Elliot (played by Michael Caine) who, on the other hand, becomes infatuated with her younger sister Lee (played by Barbara Hershey). She is living with snobbish old artist Frederick (played by Max von Sydow), but the decline of that relationship allows Elliot to make his move. In the meantime, Hannah’s and Lee’s sister Holly (played by Dianne Wiest), a failed actress and former cocaine addict, tries to stabilise her messy life by starting catering business with her best friend April (played by Carrie Fisher), but their friendship is challenged by rivalry over attractive architect David (played by Sam Waterston). Holly had disastrous date with Hannah’s former husband Mickey (played by Woody Allen), hypochondriac television producer who has recently developed obsession with possibility of brain tumour.
Most of Allen’s film are based on gimmicks, and Hannah and Her Sisters isn’t an exception. In this case it was a narrative structure, borrowed from Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander - a series of different subplots connected by family gatherings. Another interesting narrative technique Allen applies is use of internal monologues that often serves as semi-ironic commentary on characters and their actions. But, most interesting thing about Allen’s film is his script that tries to provide perfect blend of serious existential drama, old-fashioned romance and mild comedy. Allen has won Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and it shows that he mostly succeeded in his effort, creating a lot of sympathy for characters, despite moments when their actions appear to be questionable. There is also great deal of realism and authenticity in film, helped by some of Allen’s creative choices – O’Sullivan and Farrow, who play mother and daughter in the film, are actual mother and daughter in real life and parts of the film were actually made in Farrow’s real life apartment.
Allen’s efforts are, as usual, helped by diverse and very talented cast. Farrow does a good job playing an almost saintly character of perfect mother and wife, while Allen is decent in typical role of neurotic New York intelectual (whose quest for deep philosophical answers sometimes dwarves anything else in the film). But the best work is done by actors who, unsurprisingly, won Oscars for their roles. Michael Caine plays role of man torn between short-term infauation and long-term marital happiness very well. Same can be said for Dianne Wiest who plays the most dysfunctional character in the film, but in the end goes through spectacular and believable transformation into successful writer. Barbara Hershey is, perhaps, not that well-cast, because, for some reason, in this film she doesn’t look like an object of someone’s mid life crisis. Yet, despite those flaws, Hannah and Her Sisters is a very good film and the uncharacteristically happy ending (apparently forced on Allen by studio) looks convincing. As such, it could be recommended even to the viewers who haven’t acquired taste for Woody Allen’s work.
