Hello beautiful people, those who have read my previous reviews could realize that I really like period films but above all those that speak to us and teach us far above how slavery was in those years, everything they had to living their victims in the hands of their "supposed masters" is without a doubt for me something that leaves no one indifferent unless you have a heart of stone.

Harriet is a movie that I wanted to see for a long time but I hadn't found a space to watch it, knowing that I hadn't read anything about it, but with the simple synopsis it had it was able to capture my attention, since you can practically understand what the whole movie is about. movie, Harriet was a slave who escaped to freedom traveling almost 100 km between forests and savannah, managing to do things that it was almost impossible for black people to do for fear of suffering the terrible consequences, and wonderful of all is that It is based on a true story because Harriet Tubman did exist.

Minty later known as Harriet is a young slave who has a very particular gift, something that makes her very special and will help her in the purpose of her life, it was a time when few slaves had their freedom, in Minty's case she was married, but only her husband was free, so looking to buy Minty's freedom, her evil master did not accept, which caused Minty to look for a way to flee.

What was Minty's (Harriet) purpose after running away? Help free other slaves. What happened to your husband? What happened to your family? How did you get them released? You'll have to find out that by watching the movie or reading its story, because I'm not going to ruin the plot for you. Something I did not know and I learned with this film, was that white people are mediated in wealth according to the number of slaves they had under their power, the more slaves the richer they considered themselves at the level of social status.

Another interesting thing I saw was that when a slave helped other slaves escape, the owners of those slaves were responsible for paying the other people who had lost slaves, something that could cause them problems if at the time of paying They didn't have enough money, making them have to sell slaves or worse still their houses to be able to pay those debts, so they will understand the problem that Harriet was for their owners and for all the white people who had slaves.

It's incredible how a person just because of their skin color can feel superior to others, reaching the point of believing they own their owners. Really, when you watch the movie, you can't understand the degree of evil that exists in this type of abuse of power, reaching treating people as if they were animals or simple objects that they use at will, everything that Harriet had to suffer when she was barely a teenager, enduring lashes, blows, slapping at the hands of their owners, despite everything, this ended up turning her into a warrior, a brave woman without fear of anything that transcended for those who knew her.

    mini hive.jpg

But what makes everything even more incredible and leaves you with your mouth open is our current reality, since this film that was under discussion to be recorded around 1994 knowing that its protagonist was an African-American woman, and being the most logical and consistent that the actress to play Harriet was also, the unusual thing turned out to be that one of the Hollywood executives proposed that the main actress be nothing more and nothing less than Julia Roberts, a white woman, claiming that nobody would notice the difference, something that makes it clear that despite having been abolished slavery centuries ago, there are still traces of arrogance and contempt towards black people to mention a part.

In my humble opinion as a spectator, I can say that the work that Cynthia Erivo did in the role of Harriet was wonderful, a woman who transmits every feeling, every particle of pain, strength and desire to fight to rescue her people, who shows that he is not afraid of anything and nothing matters more than his freedom and that of his people, but not everything stays there, Harriet was a conductor of the clandestine railroad that was formed for the liberation of the slaves, she was in the ranks of the army, He participated in favor of the female vote, he did many things throughout his long life in favor of achieving the freedom of his people. I must also mention that a powerful voice is spent, because yes, in the story we will see how Harriet uses her voice when singing as a warning that she is leaving or arriving at a place.

It is a film that I recommend watching to anyone, because more than entertainment for me it is a way of educating and learning about the history of our ancestors and seeing everything they have had to go through to achieve their freedom, even though it may seem incredible in full XXI century, vestiges of a style of slavery are still seen but more modernized. Thank you very much for having come this far, if you saw the film, share your comment with me and if not, I would like to know your opinion about it.

  2. A Review of HARRIET@wolfofnostreet1546d

Harriet is a movie about the American abolitionist, Harriet Tubman. It is just the right biopic to learn about this great woman who made it her life's mission to free enslaved people. It was released in 2019 and stars Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, and Janelle Monáe.

    image.pngsource

Harriet (birth-name - Araminta Ross aka Minty) was born into slavery and owned by the Brodess family. She was allowed to marry a freedman, John Tubman. They intended to have kids so they sought permission from the Brodess family and demanded Harriet's freedom because according to past agreement, she was meant to be free.

This didn't sit well with the Brodess family and they put up Minty for sale. Refusing to be sold out, Minty escaped leaving her husband and the rest of her family behind.

She walked several miles to the freetown of Philadephia where she became a free woman with the help of a group of abolitionists called the Underground Railroad. She then took up the free name, Harriet Tubman.

A year later, she makes the decision to go back to her home, Maryland, to get her family and bring them to freedom. It wasn't an easy feat but she was determined to free every one of her family and also as many enslaved people as she could while being hunted by slave-masters.

I liked this movie a whole lot because of the history lesson. I have come across the name Harriet Tubman several times but I didn't know how much of an impact she had been.

    image.pngsource

Not only did I like it for the history, I also loved every part of the movie production. I think it's a very good representation of this great woman.

The casting was awesome and Cynthia Erivo looks a lot like the real Harriet. I was so proud to find out that she's Nigerian because that makes her my sister 😄 She sang a number of freedom chants/soundtracks, showcasing her musical prowess.

She was so good in delivering this role and her singing is way up there. She made me fall in love with all the songs and my favorite song written and sang by her in the movie is 'Stand Up'. I even performed it in the Hive Open Mic weekly contest to show you how much I liked the song.

It was my first time seeing Janelle Monáe acting and I was really impressed with how she carried herself like a lady for her role. I love love love the costuming, she looked every bit the character in those gigantic dresses.

I only have good things to say about this movie, especially because it is a movie about slavery but I wasn't traumatized. This is the first time I'm not crying after watching a slavery movie.

I felt the intensity of the topic even when there weren't gory scenes that are often seen in movies of this subgenre. That has got to be my favorite thing about the movie.

    It's a 10/10 for me and I'll definitely recommend.

Have you seen Harriet? What are your thoughts?
