There are people who seek out and enjoy unusual things; everyone can have different tastes, and the rest will say—just to look good—that they don’t judge, but subconsciously, their first thought does judge—and quite a bit. Now imagine all of the above applied to sexual preferences. If we could know a person’s first thought or reaction to different forms of pleasure, it would completely expose their dark and bizarre fantasies—both in and out of bed 😈😈
Hellraiser is a 1987 film that firmly plays with the premise above, navigating the line between the angelic and the demonic. It’s not at all sexually explicit, but I think that, as a concept, pleasure is very much present in shaping its brand of horror.
It has an atmosphere that I perceived as satanic; its practical, monstrous elements are among the most compelling aspects of the film. In fact, at times it reminded me of Lovecraft’s Cosmic Horror, but in this case it’s a subtle erotic horror, since it isn’t explicit as such—it’s more of a story that tries to tell us that suffering is like pleasure.

It does this because, based on these concepts I picked up from the film, the story develops its creatures known as Cenobites—they are the ones who truly bring this movie to life and give it its identity with their terrifying appearances, clad in black leather.
Anyone who sees them can immediately associate them with diabolical elements and summoning rituals, where these very creatures help give the story personality and individuality so they don’t come across as just another run-of-the-mill demon from the world of cinema. For people with very unusual, exotic, and dangerous tastes, these beings could even be seen as angels.
I think it’s valid to see them this way because we always mistakenly assume that angels are good, when in reality they’re often the ones who carry out God’s cruelest commands. Perhaps you, as a viewer, might see them that way too—it’s up to you to watch the film and judge the Cenobites’ behavior, along with their bizarre way of presenting their ideas, and above all, who they really are 👻👻
Here’s a trailer for the film so you can get a better idea of everything I just mentioned. The easy part is simply seeing them as demons… the hard part is actually understanding what they really are 😐😐

I want to point out that the screenplay goes to great lengths to give meaning to the film’s everyday elements; there’s a very present family conflict that gets buried in the darkness of the Cenobites—metaphorically speaking, that is. I say this because once the film starts unleashing its monstrous creatures, those so well-written family conflicts end up being just window dressing haha 😅😅
I’ll admit that the family conflict isn’t vital to the outcome, but it does heighten the viewer’s interest at the beginning of the film because I felt it was very well developed; the screenwriters’ effort really paid off in keeping the movie entertaining.
Ashley Laurence as Kirsty is one of the best parts of the film, along with the sinister presence of the Cenobites. The way the creatures scare her and she goes crazy with fear is wonderful to watch 😃😃
One thing worth noting is that in the Latin American dub, the voice actress who brings Kirsty to life is the same one who voices the protagonist in A Nightmare on Elm Street—I recognized her and loved it because I’m very familiar with that Latin American dub voice.
The downside is that the Cenobites didn’t strike me as dangerous at all when it came down to it; in fact, they seemed fragile and were very easy to defeat.
