Hello everyone, in the world of anime there are always series that manage to resonate with us for various reasons, whether it's the characters, the plot, the music, or any other aspect that makes us feel involved and even identify with it. Well, around 2015, many of us became fans of a series that basically made us feel connected to the duality of the life we presented to others versus who we truly were. It was so captivating that, even though it was just a comedy, it managed to steal more than one heart. So today I'll give you my brief opinion about "Himouto Umaru-chan."
Hola a todos, en el mundo del anime siempre hay series que logran simpatizar con nosotros por diversos rasgos, ya sea por el personaje, por la trama, por la música o cualquier punto que llega a hacer que nos sintamos parte e incluso identificados al respecto, y bueno, por el año 2015 muchos fuimos los que nos hicimos seguidores de una serie que básicamente nos hacía sentir identificados a muchos por la dualidad de una vida que se mostraba a los demás contra lo que realmente éramos y fue tan llamativa que, aunque era una comedia sin más, logró robar más de un corazón, por lo que hoy les daré mi pequeña opinión acerca de "Himouto Umaru-chan".
Created by Sankakuhead and first released as a manga serialized in the weekly seinen manga magazine Young Jump in 2013, with a comedy and slice-of-life category and having a total of 12 volumes with its last publication in 2017, it would see its anime adaptation in 2015 directed by Masahiko Ohta and the studio Doga Kobo, with a total of 12 chapters plus an OVA in its first season and, due to the success of this, it would have a second season in 2017, also with 12 episodes plus its respective OVA.

The story introduces us to Umaru, a high school student acclaimed by all as one of the best, projecting an image of a delicate, sweet, and quiet girl that inspires admiration and recognition. At school, Umaru seems oblivious to common topics and always impresses everyone with her perfect grades; however, once she's home, the picture changes, revealing that this sweet girl is actually an otaku and video game enthusiast with a personality very similar to many of our own, which completely contradicts what others in her circle believe.
La historia nos presenta la vida de Umaru, una estudiante de secundaria, la cual es aclamada por todos como una de las mejores estudiantes, así como la imagen de chica delicada, dulce y tranquila que hace que todos quieran admirarla y reconocerla como alguien única. Umaru, en su entorno escolar, se muestra incluso ajena a temas comunes y siempre impresiona a todos con sus calificaciones perfectas; sin embargo, una vez está en casa, se nos cambia el panorama, mostrándonos que esa chica dulce en realidad es una otaku y aficionada a videojuegos con un estilo de ser muy parecido al que tenemos muchos, lo cual contrasta totalmente con lo que los demás de su círculo creen.
The issue with Umaru is that she doesn't simply have a split personality; rather, both personalities are very distinct from one another, which even leads to conflict between them at times. She lives with her older brother, who is the one who most witnesses and suffers because of Umaru's true personality. At one point, it's revealed that he, too, initially had a different image of his sister. Other characters also join the story, and our protagonist has to manipulate them to avoid being exposed for her true nature.
El tema con Umaru es que no es que simplemente tenga una personalidad dividida, sino que ambas son muy distintas una de la otra, lo que la hace incluso en algunos momentos entrar en conflicto. Así mismo, esta vive con su hermano mayor, el cual es el que más llega a ver y sufrir por esta personalidad real de Umaru, llegando a un punto donde se nos revela que él también en un inicio tenía una imagen distinta de su hermana, así como otros personajes que se van uniendo y con quienes nuestra protagonista tiene que mover sus hilos para no ser descubierta acerca de cómo es realmente. .
The interesting thing about Umaru is that, as the story progresses, we learn more about her behavior patterns, and we see, for example, Kirie, a girl with severe social anxiety and shyness, who empathizes well with the real Umaru but can't talk to the one she presents in class. Conversely, we're also introduced to the girl she rivals in class, an unfiltered version of how Umaru should really be, unafraid to hide her tastes, but this girl is often alone and friendless. And it's not just them; this anime, beyond the comedy, shows us how various behavioral patterns, traumas, attachments, and fears coexist differently in each character, even with similarities among them.
El tema curioso con Umaru es que, a medida que avanza, vamos conociendo no solo más acerca de su patrón de comportamiento, sino que vemos, por ejemplo, a Kirie, una chica con ansiedad social fuerte y timidez, que logra empatizar bien con la versión real de Umaru y no puede hablar con la que se muestra en clases; o, por el contrario, también se nos presenta la que sería la chica con la que rivaliza en clases, la cual es una versión sin filtros de cómo debería ser realmente Umaru, sin esconder sus gustos, pero esta suele estar sola y sin amigos y no solo ellos; este anime, más allá de la comedia, nos muestra cómo diversos patrones de comportamientos, traumas, apegos y miedos suelen convivir de manera distinta en cada personaje, incluso con similitudes entre sí.
This anime, while excellent at simple comedy, caught my attention because of a time when many of us pretended to hide our tastes and hobbies to fit in or simply maintain a clean image in front of others. Many of us enjoyed this anime because, personally, after hours of seriousness at university, I'd come home and go straight, like a little kid, to laugh at Umaru or another anime, so to a certain extent, we were all experiencing this firsthand. I not only feel like Umaru, but I've even come to sympathize with the other characters, since this anime isn't meant to make us feel like the protagonist, but rather to help us identify with shyness, anxiety, overwork, and the search for affection, as well as other common patterns.
Este anime, aunque es muy bueno en comedia simple, llegó a llamar la atención desde mi punto de vista por ese momento donde muchos llegábamos a aparentar o ocultar gustos o aficiones para llegar a encajar o simplemente para mantener una imagen limpia ante los otros. Muchos disfrutábamos este anime porque, personalmente, llegaba de la universidad luego de horas de estar seria e iba directo, como niña chiquita, a reírme de Umaru u otro anime, por lo que hasta cierto punto recreábamos mucho de esto. No solo siento como Umaru, sino que incluso he llegado a simpatizar con los demás personajes, ya que este anime no es para que nos sintamos la prota, sino para que incluso lleguemos a sentirnos identificados con la timidez, la ansiedad, el exceso de trabajo y la búsqueda de afecto, así como con otros patrones más.
This anime not only makes us laugh and enjoy a fun, everyday plot, but to a certain extent, the perspective of a girl who hides what she likes to be perfect, while we, as viewers, enjoy her antics, is something that I definitely feel made this anime successful. It's certainly one of my favorites, both for laughing and for analyzing its inner workings a bit more. So, without further ado, hoping you enjoyed this post, thank you very much for reading.
Este anime no solo nos hace reír o disfrutar de una trama divertida y cotidiana, sino que hasta cierto punto el punto de vista de una chica que oculta lo que le gusta para ser perfecta cuando nosotros, como espectadores, disfrutamos con sus ocurrencias es algo que sin duda siento que hizo que este anime tuviera éxito, por lo que es sin duda de mis favoritos, tanto para reír como para analizar desde un poco más lo interno de esta, así que sin más, esperando que sea de su agrado este post, muchas gracias por leer.
