I'm talking about Hinamatsuri. Seriously, it's not every day, not even every year, that you come across a comedy like this. You know the deal with most comedy animes, right? Something super funny happens, you die laughing, and in the next scene, it's as if nothing happened, a clean slate. They hit the reset button and move on to the next joke. Well, with Hinamatsuri, you can completely forget about that. This is a series that goes absolutely bonkers with its jokes and situations, taking them to brilliant levels of absurdity, but with one HUGE difference that changes everything: the jokes have consequences. The ridiculous and crazy things that happen to these characters to get a laugh end up leaving a permanent mark, completely changing the state of affairs in the series.

They aren't just isolated moments; they are the bricks with which the story and its characters are built, and that gives it an energy and dynamism that you just don't see in this genre. So, what's it all about? Let me paint you a picture. We have Nita, a mid-level yakuza, ambitious and quite smart. The guy is living his best gangster life, collecting expensive vases and trying to climb the underworld ladder. One night, out of nowhere, a bizarre metal capsule teleports into his apartment and lands right on his head. Inside is a blue-haired girl with an impressive poker face named Hina.

She barely speaks, shows no emotion, and, oh, turns out she's a psychic with absurdly powerful telekinetic abilities. Before Nita can even process what the hell is going on, Hina basically threatens him into letting her stay, and just like that, this seasoned yakuza becomes a forced adoptive father overnight. And this strange, barely-functional father-daughter relationship is the starting point for the entire series. Let's be clear, there's no grand main plot here, no villain to defeat or final goal to reach. The series simply follows the day-to-day life of Nita and Hina and, most importantly, all the other characters who get entangled in their world. And honestly, that's one of its greatest strengths. The camera doesn't just focus on the two of them; it gives everyone a chance to have their moment to shine.

Hola a todos, queridos amigos de Hive, espero que estén super bien hoy, en esta ocasión les quiero hablar de un anime interesante que siendo honesto, me tomo por por sorpresa.. estoy hablando de Hinamatsuri, es que, en serio, no todos los días, ni siquiera todos los años, uno se topa con una comedia así.. ustedes saben cómo es la movida con la mayoría de los animes de comedia, ¿no? Pasa algo súper gracioso, te matas de la risa y en la siguiente escena es como si nada, borrón y cuenta nueva.. le dan al botón de reinicio y a buscar el próximo chiste, bueno, con Hinamatsuri olvídense completamente de eso. Esta es una serie que se va al carajo con sus chistes y situaciones, llevándolos a unos niveles de absurdo geniales, pero con una diferencia GIGANTE que lo cambia todo: los chistes tienen consecuencias, las cosas ridículas y locas que les pasan a estos personajes para sacarte una carcajada terminan dejando una marca para siempre, cambiando por completo el estado de las cosas en la serie.
No son solo momentos aislados; son los ladrillos con los que se construye la historia y sus personajes, y eso le da una energía y un dinamismo que simplemente no se ve en este género.. entonces, ¿de qué va la cosa? Déjenme les pinto el cuadro. Tenemos a Nita, un yakuza de medio pelo, ambicioso y bastante inteligente.. el tipo está viviendo su mejor vida de gánster, coleccionando jarrones carísimos y tratando de escalar en el bajo mundo, una noche, así de la nada, una cápsula de metal rarísima se teletransporta a su departamento y le cae justo en la cabeza.. adentro hay una chica de pelo azul con una cara de póker impresionante llamada Hina.
Casi no habla, no muestra ni una pizca de emoción y, ah, resulta que es una psíquica con unos poderes telequinéticos absurdamente potentes.. sntes de que Nita pueda si quiera procesar qué demonios está pasando, Hina básicamente lo amenaza para que la deje quedarse, y así, sin más, este yakuza curtido se convierte de la noche a la mañana en un papá adoptivo a la fuerza. Y esta relación de padre e hija, toda extraña y que apenas funciona, es el punto de partida de toda la serie.. que quede claro, aquí no hay una gran trama principal, no hay un villano que derrotar ni un objetivo final al que llegar.. la serie simplemente sigue el día a día de Nita y Hina y, lo más importante, de todo el montón de personajes que se van enredando en su mundo. Y la verdad esa es una de sus mayores fortalezas, la cámara no se clava solo en ellos dos; le da chance a todo el mundo de tener su momento para brillar.

Now, I have to be really honest with you... when the series started, I swore I knew what I was getting into: pure, hardcore comedy. I mean, the first two episodes are a masterclass in absurd humor. The style is just fantastic. It's exaggerated, obviously, but it doesn't fall into those super tired visual gags, like characters' heads suddenly swelling up like a beach ball. Instead, the comedy comes from forcing these incredibly weird and surreal situations into a world that, otherwise, tries to function with complete seriousness. The joke comes from how each character's flaws and quirks escalate into a total disaster—things we can all recognize, like secondhand embarrassment, silly anger, or an ego that can't fit in their chest. All this creates the perfect storm where the most outlandish things somehow feel... logical.

You're never left thinking, "well, where did that come from?" You're too busy dying of laughter because you perfectly understand how these imperfect and ridiculous characters ended up in that mess. But then, suddenly, something changes. Around the third episode, the series does something super brave that, honestly, even threw me for a loop at first. It starts to hit the brakes on the non-stop jokes and enters a territory I wasn't expecting at all, much denser. It tones down the humor a notch or two to make room for genuine drama, touching on very real social issues like homelessness and even child labor. My first thought was: "Wait, where is this going? Is it going to get boring or what?"

It felt like it was deviating a bit from the hilarious path it was on, and the change of pace was super noticeable. You're introduced to Anzu, another girl with powers sent to deal with Hina, but who ends up abandoned and homeless. Her story isn't just told for laughs; you see her struggle, learn the hard way what it's like to live on the streets, and find a new family with the park's homeless community. Things get unexpectedly deep and emotional. At first, I was genuinely worried the series was losing its way, that it was stagnating.

Ahora, les tengo que ser bien honesto.. cuando la serie arrancó, yo juraba que ya sabía a lo que venía: comedia pura y dura, es que los dos primeros episodios son una cátedra de humor absurdo, el estilo es simplemente fantástico. Es exagerado, obvio, pero no cae en esos clichés visuales ya súper quemados, como que de la nada a los personajes les crece la cabeza como si fuera una pelota de playa.. en vez de eso, la comedia nace de forzar estas situaciones increíblemente raras y surrealistas en un mundo que, fuera de eso, intenta funcionar con total seriedad. El chiste viene de cómo los defectos y mañas de cada personaje van escalando hasta convertirse en un desastre total, cosas que todos ubicamos, como la vergüenza ajena, el coraje tonto o un orgullo que no les cabe en el pecho, todo esto crea la tormenta perfecta donde las cosas más disparatadas de alguna manera se sienten… lógicas.
Nunca te quedas pensando “bueno, y esto ¿a qué vino?”.. estás demasiado ocupado cagándote de la risa porque entiendes perfectamente cómo estos personajes, todos imperfectos y ridículos, terminaron metidos en ese desmadre.. pero de repente, algo cambia. Como por el tercer episodio, la serie se avienta a hacer algo súper valiente y que, la verdad al principio hasta me sacó de onda.. empieza a meterle freno a los chistes sin parar y se mete en un terreno que no me esperaba para nada, mucho más denso, le baja dos rayitas al humor para darle espacio a un drama genuino, tocando temas sociales bien reales como la gente que vive en la calle o incluso el trabajo infantil. Lo primero que pensé fue: “Un momento, ¿pa’ dónde va esto? ¿Se va a poner aburrido o qué?”..
Se sintió como si se desviara un poco del camino divertidísimo que llevaba, y el cambio de ritmo fue súper notorio. Te presentan a Anzu, otra chica con poderes que mandan para que se encargue de Hina, pero que termina abandonada y sin un techo, su historia no te la cuentan solo para que te rías; la ves batallar, aprender a las malas cómo es vivir en la calle y encontrar una nueva familia con la comunidad de gente sin hogar del parque.. la cosa se pone inesperadamente profunda y emotiva, al principio, sí me preocupó que la serie estuviera perdiendo el rumbo, que se estuviera estancando.

But you have no idea how wrong I was. This twist is what takes Hinamatsuri from a very good comedy and turns it into something truly special. After laying these deeper, more mature foundations for its characters, the series finds its balance again. And what it does is masterfully blend the most honest drama with its usual absurd comedy. Suddenly, you'll have a lump in your throat, with teary eyes from a super emotional scene, and the next second you're bursting out laughing at the joke that follows.

It manages to deliver these incredibly sincere messages about the family you choose and connecting with people, but it does so while capping off almost every important moment with humor. It's a balance that seems impossible, reminding me of the best of series like Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid or even Mob Psycho 100. This brings me to what is, without a doubt, the absolute best part of the anime: the character development is insane. Look, in almost all comedies, the characters don't change. Their flaws are the joke factory, and if they learn their lesson, the jokes dry up. Well, Hinamatsuri takes that idea and throws it out the window.

Here, the characters grow and change in ways that are super profound and believable. Let's start with the mains. Nita begins as the typical self-centered yakuza who couldn't care less about anything. His only concerns are his reputation and trying to pick up the waitress, Utako. But by the end of the series, the guy is a proper, full-fledged father figure. He still has his slightly twisted yakuza priorities, but he genuinely cares about Hina, about her future, and even starts to see people for who they are and not just for appearances. It's a real evolution, one you can see and feel.

Pero no saben lo equivocado que estaba.. es que este giro es lo que agarra a Hinamatsuri y la convierte de una muy buena comedia en algo de verdad especial, después de poner estas bases más profundas y maduras para sus personajes, la serie vuelve a encontrar su balance. Y lo que hace es mezclar de una forma magistral el drama más honesto con su comedia absurda de siempre.. de repente vas a estar con un nudo en la garganta, con los ojos llorosos por una escena súper emotiva, y al segundo siguiente te estás partiendo de la risa con el chiste que le sigue.
Logra darte estos mensajes súper sinceros sobre la familia que uno elige y sobre conectar con la gente, pero lo hace mientras casi todos los momentos importantes te los remata con humor, es un balance que parece imposible, me recuerda a lo mejor de series como Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid o hasta Mob Psycho 100, esto me lleva a lo que es, sin ninguna duda, el punto más cabrón del anime: el desarrollo de personajes es una locura. Miren, en casi todas las comedias los personajes no cambian.. sus defectos son la fábrica de chistes, y si aprenden la lección, pues se acaban los chistes, bueno, Hinamatsuri agarra esa idea y la manda a volar.
Acá los personajes crecen y cambian de formas súper profundas y que te las crees. Vámonos con los principales, Nita arranca como el típico yakuza egocéntrico al que todo le vale.. sus únicas preocupaciones son su reputación y ver si se levanta a la mesera, Utako. Pero para el final de la serie, el tipo es un figurón paterno hecho y derecho.. sigue teniendo sus prioridades de yakuza medio torcidas, pero de verdad se preocupa por Hina, por su futuro, y hasta empieza a ver a la gente por quiénes son y no solo por las apariencias.. es una evolución real, que la puedes ver y sentir.

Hina herself goes from being a lazy, spoiled brat with a blank expression who uses her powers for any silly thing, to someone who actually starts to consider others' feelings. She puts in the effort to try and do good things for Nita, even if she's a disaster at it. She learns what empathy is, and that connection with Nita forces them both to become better people. Then there's Anzu; her change is perhaps the most powerful of all. She starts as an impulsive rival who didn't care about anything, but the time she spends on the street completely transforms her. She becomes this super hardworking, incredibly sweet girl who is genuinely grateful for every little good thing she's given. The contrast between the responsible and grateful Anzu and the still-lazy Hina becomes one of the best running gags in the series. And we can't forget Hitomi.

Good lord, Hitomi. She starts as the typical, quiet middle school student who is incapable of saying no to people. This single flaw drags her into a mess where she ends up secretly working as a bartender at a luxury bar, serving drinks to her own teacher and Nita's yakuza buddies, and eventually becomes a business genius. She basically transforms into a middle school version of Aggretsuko, becoming the most mature, responsible, and exploited person in the entire cast, while all the adults around her fail her time and time again. Her story is simultaneously a hilarious running gag and a silent tragedy. And this incredible growth isn't just for the protagonists. The secondary characters, even those who appear in only one episode, often show development between their appearances. This constant evolution, along with the new characters they introduce who stick around, makes the series and its humor feel incredibly fresh.

Of course, none of this would work without top-notch production. The direction is impeccable, the comedy feels more potent thanks to hilariously exaggerated animated reactions and perfect timing, both in dialogue and editing. The animation itself is high-quality throughout, filled with vibrant colors and a beautiful play of light that makes the characters really pop. While some might say the music isn't very memorable, I found it super effective. It's great for selling the quirky, relaxed tone of the series, but it knows exactly when to swell to give more power to those more serious and emotional moments. If I had to give it a rating, I'd give it a solid 8.5/10.

It's not a perfect 10 only because that initial tone shift can throw off people who were just looking for jokes. But the emotional and comedic payoff of that twist is so great that it's a minor complaint. This series is hilarious, surprisingly touching, and brilliantly written. If you haven't given it a chance, you're seriously missing out on some of the best laughs and most tender moments in recent anime. And well... that's it for today's review! La misma Hina pasa de ser una mocosa floja, malcriada y con cara de nada que usa sus poderes para cualquier tontería, a alguien que de verdad empieza a tomar en cuenta los sentimientos de los demás, le echa ganas para intentar hacer cosas buenas por Nita, aunque sea un desastre para eso.. aprende lo que es la empatía, y esa conexión con Nita los obliga a los dos a convertirse en mejores personas. Luego está Anzu, su cambio es quizás el más fuerte de todos.. empieza como una rival impulsiva a la que no le importaba nada, pero el tiempo que pasa en la calle la transforma por completo, se convierte en esta chica súper trabajadora, increíblemente dulce y que agradece de corazón cada pequeña cosa buena que le dan. El contraste entre la responsable y agradecida Anzu y la todavía flojonaza de Hina se convierte en uno de los mejores chistes recurrentes de la serie.. no podemos olvidarnos de Hitomi.
Dios santo, Hitomi, ella empieza como la típica estudiante de secundaria normal y tranquila que es incapaz de decirle que no a la gente.. este único defecto la va arrastrando a un desmadre en el que termina trabajando en secreto como mesera de un bar de lujo, sirviéndole tragos a su propio profesor y a los compas yakuzas de Nita, y al final se convierte en una genio de los negocios. Básicamente se transforma en una versión de secundaria de Aggretsuko, volviéndose la persona más madura, responsable y explotada de todo el elenco, mientras todos los adultos a su alrededor le fallan una y otra vez.. su historia es al mismo tiempo un chiste recurrente para morirse de la risa y una tragedia silenciosa. Y este crecimiento increíble no es solo para los protas.. los personajes secundarios, incluso los que salen en un solo capítulo, a menudo muestran un desarrollo entre sus apariciones, esta evolución constante, junto con los nuevos personajes que van metiendo y se quedan, hace que la serie y su humor se sientan increíblemente frescos.
Claro, nada de esto funcionaría sin una producción de primer nivel, la dirección es impecable, la comedia se siente más potente gracias a estas reacciones animadas que son súper exageradas e hilarantes, y con un timing perfecto, tanto en los diálogos como en la edición. La animación en sí es de alta calidad todo el tiempo, llena de colores muy vivos y un juego de luces precioso que hace que los personajes resalten un montón.. aunque algunos podrían decir que la música no es muy memorable, a mí me pareció súper efectiva. Es genial para venderte el tono peculiar y relajado de la serie, pero sabe exactamente cuándo crecer para darle más fuerza a esos momentos más serios y emotivos. Si le tuviera que dar una calificación, le daría un sólido 8.5/10.
No es un 10 perfecto solo porque ese cambio de tono al principio puede sacar de onda a la gente que solo venía a buscar chistes.. pero la recompensa emocional y de comedia que te da ese giro es tan grande que es una queja menor, esta serie es divertidísima, sorprendentemente conmovedora y está escrita de una forma brillante.. si no le han dado una oportunidad, en serio se están perdiendo de algunas de las mejores risas y los momentos más tiernos del anime reciente.. y bueno.. hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
