Apple TV is a streaming service with several good series but not enough recognition. Some of the series I have seen from that service and have been very enjoyable are Servant, See, Calls, and now I can say the same about Home Before Dark. One important series that will be released in the coming months and is actually the series I am expecting the most in this year is The Foundation, which is probably the most ambitious series from Apple TV and the first adaption ever of the classical story from Isaac Asimov of the same name.

Anyways, back to Home Before Dark, what caught my attention at this first glance was that it was about a mystery taking place in a small town, and that is a combination that I have always enjoyed. There is something about small towns that make mysteries much more alluring and entertaining.

What made me doubt about the series since the beginning is that the main character is played by a kid actor, and I was worried this could end up making the series very silly. In the past, I watched the first couple of seasons of Stranger Things but eventually, it became so silly and I simply stopped watching it.

I was worried the same could happen in this one, and later in the article, I will expand more about this but even though I have enjoyed the first 2 seasons, I doubt I will continue to watch this series even if a third one is released but I am not saying the series is bad, nothing could be further from the truth.

What was the series about?

The series is about the Lisko family who recently moved back into the hometown of the dad. They have 3 daughters, and the one in the middle, Hilde, is the main character of the show. From the moment they arrive at this small town, it becomes very clear there are some secrets and mysteries related to the dad's past in this place.

In season 1, we discover that around 20 years ago, the dad saw one of his friends being kidnapped in front of his eyes, and the horrible drama that ensued left many people traumatized. No one knows what happened to that kid and is a community's wound that is still in the process of healing.

Hilde's task in season 1 will be to investigate everything she can about this kidnapping and eventually she will make crazy discoveries. That's season 1 mystery, when I started to watch season 2 I was expecting to see the continuation of the same mystery, and eventually, the continuation arrives but at the beginning, it was as if season 2 was about a completely different mystery.

In season 2, the big mystery will be about dark secrets from a very powerful corporation that pretty much rules and own the entire town. It looked completely unrelated to the mystery of season 1, but by the end of the season, the writers did a good job mixing both mysteries together.

Hilde and his 2 best friends will eventually begin to suspect there is something wrong with the water of this small town. Her grandfather is sick, and the information that raises the most suspicion is when Hilde and her dad discover all of her grandfather's friends got sick and died. Hilde believes something made them sick and she wants to know what.

We will see this evil corporation trying to stop her from continuing her investigation but like the brave kid that she is, she will continue to push forward and do whatever it needs to be done to find the truth and expose it. The amount of risk these kids take is too big to be believable, in one night they even went out to some type of construction place where heavy machinery was being moved. They also managed to infiltrate themselves in all sorts of places. That doesn't seem like something real kids would be doing, especially at night far away from their homes.

The series becomes at times even more exaggerated than season 1 and this reduced some of the enjoyment it could provide. There were also more silly moments than in season 1, and some useless teen drama as well.

This season provides a proper ending to all of the mysteries including the one from season 1. However, due to its last scene, it looked like the writers planned to continue with a third season but I believe this series has already told its story and it is at high risk of being not only overmilked but also overwhelmed by increasing amounts of teen drama and silliness. This is the main reason why I don't think I will continue to watch the series if a third season is released. The mysteries are already resolved and season 2 had less focus on mystery and more in teen drama compared to season 1, which is a negative change in my opinion.

However, I don't regret watching this series because it was enjoyable and provided a couple of entertaining mysteries.

Main names associated with the series

The series has many different directors and this is especially true for season 2. The main director so far has been Kat Candler, a very experienced woman who has previously worked as a director in other shows such as Dirty John, 13 Reasons Why, 12 Monkeys, and many others.

Kate Woods began to work as a director in season 2 and is also an extremely experienced director. Some of the other shows where she has worked as a director are Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Magicians, Castle, Person of Interest, among many others.

Howard Deutch directed 2 episodes of season 2, just like Kate, and his experience is also just as extensive. Recently, he has worked in the series Young Sheldon, Empire, and Outcast.

The remaining director who worked in at least 2 episodes of season 2 is Edward Ornelas. Like the previously mentioned directors, this is a director who mainly works for TV shows, and some of his other works have been in the series The Resident, NCIS: New Orleans, and Jane the Virgin.

Chloé Durkin is the only writer, apart from the 2 main creators, that participated in all 10 episodes of season 2. What's incredible is that this is the first time this person works as a writer in her entire career. She was a producer of the series since the beginning, but in season 2 decided to venture into the writing world.

The cast only has 2 main members who are the ones I will be mentioning. Jim Sturgess was the only actor I was able to recognize since the beginning thanks to a movie called 21 about a group of students who counted cards playing blackjack at the casino. It was a good film and he played the main character. In Home Before Dark, he plays the dad of the main character and the second most important character in the show. He is a reporter but had to move back into his hometown with his family, and once there, his daughter will begin investigating a very important mystery.

The main character of the show is played by Brooklynn Prince, a very young and talented actress playing a premature but dedicated reporter with very strong principles. Her character shows a level of maturity that isn't normal for her age, and what's make this character special is that it is based on the real-life journalist Hilde Lysiak, who has her own online newspaper and everything.

How were the performance from the cast and the scenery?

The performance of the cast was acceptable but eventually, the drive showed in Hilde's character becomes too much and hard to believe. I mean, the girl even leads his dad into investigating things deeper, it can be fun at the beginning but eventually becomes tiresome.

Nevertheless, the performance from Brooklynn Prince was amazing, and it is very clear this actress is going to have a great acting career. Her talent is way beyond her years and is possibly an actress that could eventually play big roles in super productions.

Jim Sturgess had a good performance as well, but there were some parts that were his gestures and behavior felt not completely authentic, however, I don't think this is entirely his fault because the series does get a little bit unauthentic in the general sense during some moments.

The scenery was cool, while investigating the mystery we will see the characters visiting all sorts of places including an island that was supposed to be abandoned, and as I mentioned before, the small-town settings really work nicely with mystery stories.

Final thoughts

Home Before Dark is an acceptable mystery series, especially in the first season, and as season 2 progresses it becomes noticeable that the focus is changing from true mysteries, to more about teen drama. I found season 1 enjoyable, and season 2 almost as much as enjoyable but given the type of ending it had, I don't think I will be watching a season 3 if it is released.

For people who love the mystery genre, I would definitely recommend this series, although you will need to take into account the main characters are very young so the series doesn't always remain completely serious. However, since Hilde's character is almost as mature as an adult, the show is watchable for the most part.

I knew about this series since it was released a couple of years ago, but it wasn't until recently when I realized a second season was already being released and that's when I decided to give this series a watch.

I haven't watched many shows from Apple TV+ but the ones I have watched have been very good, so I thought it was a good idea to give this one an opportunity too. The premise of investigating an old crime and tragedy in a little town always seems entertaining to me, but there was one thing that I wasn't really convinced of since I first read about this series, and it is that the main character in charge of the investigation is a little kid.

However, as I will explain a few paragraphs below, that didn't end up screwing the show and it can still be considered a serious and worth watching mystery series. But before explaining my thoughts about season 1, I would first like to mention some of the names associated with the series.

Main names associated with the series

The series has 2 main creators. One of them is Dana Fox, who started to work as a writer in 2005 and so far has participated in around 12 productions. The most important ones are this series, and the recently released movie Cruella. The other creator is Dara Resnik, she has a similar experience to Dana Fox, although the main productions where she has worked as a writer are the series Daredevil and the series Castle, where she worked in a few episodes. She hasn't worked in any movies so far as a writer, only in series.

Besides the main creators, the series has many more writers but only one of them has worked in sufficient episodes to include her, I am talking about Thembi Banks who worked in all the 10 episodes of season 1. This series and another one called SMILF are the most popular production where she has worked so far.

When it comes to the directors, the first season had 5 different ones with 4 of them working mostly in series and not in movies. Kat Candler directed 3 episodes of the first season, and she has been very active working for different series since 2017. Some of the most important productions where she worked as a director are the series 12 Monkeys, 13 Reasons Why, and Dirty John.

Just like Kat Candler, Rosemary Rodriguez also directed 3 episodes of the first season. This person has been very involved in directing episodes for TV shows since the mid-2000s. She always directed only 3 episodes or less per series but has accumulated a lot of experience doing that. Some of the best-known series where she has worked are The Walking Dead, Jessica Jones, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She was also the main director of the series The Good Wife where she worked in 18 episodes.

Jim McKay directed 2 episodes of season 1, and he has previously worked on very popular shows such as Better Call Saul and Evil, which by the way, has a recently released second season. The remaining directors only worked in 1 episode, one of them is Kate Woods, who previously worked in the series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Messiah, and many others that are too much to mention. Last but not least, we have the only director that has worked in major films, Jon M. Chu. He is known for being the director of the great comedy Crazy Rich Asian, as well as the director for the film Now You See Me 2.

I would also like to mention 2 members of the cast who play the main roles. The main character is played by the kid actress Brooklynn Prince. She hasn't worked in many well-known productions so far but this is understandable, apart from this series, she worked in the horror film The Turning and has made voice acting in several films such as The Angry Birds Movie 2 and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.

Her dad is played by Jim Sturgess, who is an actor I will always remember as the guy from the movie 21. More recently, he worked in the films Geostorm, Kidnapping Mr. Heineken, The Best Offer.

As we can see, the series has good enough directors and the only area where potential weaknesses can be found would be the writing department, due to the lack of previous major successes in some of the main writers. Nevertheless, this didn't prevent the first season from being an enjoyable experience as I will explain below.

What was the series about?

The series follows the life of the Lisko family, especially of their middle child Hilde. The dad lived in this small town when he was a kid but moved out to New York after graduating from high school. This is the first time he is returning since then, and there is an important reason for that.

The entire family needs to adapt to this new environment because a small town is completely different than a big city like New York. The only members of the family that are completely happy moving to this place are the 2 younger children.

Hilde is a kid who loves journalism mainly because of her dad, who worked as a prominent journalist in New York. She even has her own online newspaper which is managed with the help of her dad. Her maturity usually appears to be even greater than that of her older teen sister.

She shows a level of maturity, intelligence, discipline, and dedication that isn't normal for that age. I thought the series was exaggerating about this, but I was surprised to know this character is based on a real-life kid called Hilde Lysiak.

Shortly after the family moves to the small town, a tragedy will strike the community with the sudden and mysterious death of a woman. It is this tragedy that will make Hilde start investigating what's going on. She isn't convinced by the official explanation behind the death, and will therefore, begin her own investigation to discover what really happened.

También me gustaría mencionar a 2 miembros del elenco que interpretan los papeles principales. El personaje principal es interpretado por la actriz infantil Brooklynn Prince. Hasta ahora no ha trabajado en muchas producciones conocidas pero esto es comprensible, aparte de esta serie, trabajó en la película de terror The Turning y ha hecho actuación de voz en varias películas como The Angry Birds Movie 2 y The Lego Movie 2.

Su padre es interpretado por Jim Sturgess, un actor que siempre recordaré como el chico de la película 21. Más recientemente, trabajó en las películas Geostorm, Kidnapping Mr. Heineken y The Best Offer.

Como podemos ver, la serie tiene directores bastante buenos y la única área donde se pueden encontrar posibles debilidades sería el departamento de redacción, debido a la falta de grandes éxitos previos en algunos de los principales escritores. Sin embargo, esto no impidió que la primera temporada fuera una experiencia agradable como explicaré a continuación.

¿De qué trataba la serie?

La serie sigue la vida de la familia Lisko, especialmente de su hija mediana Hilde. El padre vivía en este pequeño pueblo cuando era un niño, pero se mudó a Nueva York después de graduarse de la escuela secundaria. Esta es la primera vez que regresa desde entonces, y hay una razón importante para ello.

Toda la familia necesita adaptarse a este nuevo entorno porque un pueblo pequeño es completamente diferente a una gran ciudad como Nueva York. Los únicos miembros de la familia que están completamente felices de mudarse a este lugar eran las 2 niñas más pequeñas.

Hilde es una niña que ama el periodismo principalmente por su padre, quien trabajó como periodista prominente en Nueva York. Ella incluso tiene su propio periódico en línea que se administra con la ayuda de su padre. Su madurez por lo general parece ser incluso mayor que la de su hermana adolescente mayor.

Her reporting will gradually increase in popularity as she continues to share her discoveries, and soon enough, pretty much the entire town is aware of who she is and what she is doing.

This town has important secrets that most people don't want to acknowledge, there are lies, corruption, and maybe even worst things hiding under the pretense of a happy little town. The main plot belongs in the mystery genre, but due to the small age of some of the characters, there are also a few silly moments included, however, the series almost never loses its serious tone.

I haven't started to watch the second season yet, I really liked the first one and will wait until the second season is entirely released to binge-watch it. The mystery is very decent, and I just love a crime-mystery story that takes place in a small town. As with all the productions of this type, there will be important twists and surprises along the way.

How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?

The performance of almost all the cast was very good. I was surprised with how well the main actress played her role, and she certainly has a bright future in the acting world. There is only 1 important character that had a weak performance and it was another kid actor, one of Hilde's friends. The rest of the cast was great.

The settings, as I just mentioned, are good for this type of story. Small towns are ideal for crime-mystery plots because most people know each other, so any secret that is revealed has an important impact on the community.

When it comes to the camera work, there were some cool shots throughout the season and I liked how the series portrays the fact Hilde has a photographic memory. The camera work was acceptable but nothing too mind-blowing.

Final thoughts

Home Before Dark is a worth watching show if you like the crime-mystery genre. It has solid performances from the cast, and a very talented kid actress playing the main role in a satisfactory manner. This is a serious production about the tragic past of a small town and a very enjoyable experience overall. I will be watching the second season as soon as it is entirely released a few weeks from now.

Mientras lo hace, comenzará a aprender sobre una gran tragedia que sucedió en este pequeño pueblo hace unas décadas y que involucra a varias personas que aún viven en el pueblo. Sus reportajes aumentarán gradualmente en popularidad a medida que continúe compartiendo sus descubrimientos, y muy pronto, casi toda la ciudad será consciente de quién es y qué está haciendo.

Solo hay un personaje importante que tuvo una actuación débil y fue otro actor infantil, uno de los amigos de Hilde. El resto del elenco fue genial.

Los escenarios, como acabo de mencionar, son buenos para este tipo de historias. Los pueblos pequeños son ideales para tramas de misterio y crimen porque la mayoría de las personas se conocen, por lo que cualquier secreto que se revele tiene un impacto importante en la comunidad.

En lo que respecta al trabajo de cámara, hubo algunas tomas geniales a lo largo de la temporada y me gustó cómo la serie retrata el hecho de que Hilde tiene una memoria fotográfica. El trabajo de cámara fue aceptable pero nada alucinante.

Reflexiones finales

Home Before Dark es un programa que vale la pena ver si te gusta el género de misterio y crimen. Tiene actuaciones sólidas del elenco y una actriz infantil muy talentosa que interpreta el papel principal de manera satisfactoria. Esta es una producción seria sobre el trágico pasado de una pequeña ciudad y una experiencia muy agradable en general. Estaré viendo la segunda temporada tan pronto como se lance por completo dentro de unas semanas.
