Sometimes it doesn't take much to grab an audience's attention when watching a film. Many people go to the theater to see films by a particular actor or actress, or a certain director, or sometimes after watching a ten-second trailer. I don't see anything wrong with that. However, sometimes that first impression can generate unrealistic expectations. I don't mean better or worse, but different from what one is going to see, and that can affect the experience. Such is the case, I believe, with this film.
Algunas veces no se necesita mucho para llamar la atención del público a la hora de ver una película. Muchas personas van al cine a ver películas de un actor o actriz en particular, o de cierto director, o a veces al ver un avance de diez segundos. No veo nada de malo en eso. Sin embargo, algunas veces esa primera impresión puede generar expectativas irreales. No quiero decir mejores ni peores, sino diferentes a lo que uno va a ver y eso puede condicionar la experiencia. Tal es el caso - creo yo - de esta película.
You've probably heard about Hot Milk in the past few months, its theatrical release, or its arrival on MUBI. I saw a lot of hype surrounding this film there. However, the film was often sold to the public as a lesbian romance or a queer story. And of course, there's some of that, but the film is so much more that it almost seems unfair that it's been promoted that way. Hot Milk tells the story of Rose (Fiona Shaw), an older woman who travels with her daughter Sofia (Emma Mackey) to the Spanish coast to meet with a specialist doctor whom she has paid a lot of money to treat her condition. For many years, Rose has been unable to walk. She didn't hurt herself, she didn't have an accident; in fact, sometimes, for no apparent reason, she can walk again for moments and she doesn't know why. The doctor, named Gomez, believes that Rose's condition has more to do with some psychological trauma than anything physical, and so he begins to ask her questions and give her tasks that reveal her past and that of her family. By her side, almost always, is her daughter Sofia, the product of a failed marriage to a Greek man whom neither she nor her mother have seen in many years. And in that sunny coastal city, between one therapy session and the next, Sofia - who put her anthropology studies on hold to accompany Rose - will find the opportunity to gradually free herself from her mother's shadow thanks to the appearance, as unexpected as it is captivating, of Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), a mysterious, intense, but above all, free woman.
Probablemente hayan oído en los meses anteriores sobre Hot Milk, su estreno en cines, o su llegada a la plataforma MUBI. Yo vi mucha publicidad respecto a este film por allí. Sin embargo, muchas veces la película fue vendida al público como un romance lésbico o como una historia queer. Y claro, hay algo de eso, pero la película es tanto más que casi parece injusto que la hayan promocionado de esa manera. Hot Milk cuenta la historia de Rose (Fiona Shaw), una mujer mayor que viaja con su hija Sofía (Emma Mackey) a la costa española para entrevistarse con un médico especialista a quien le ha pagado un montón de dinero para que la trate de su condición. Desde hace muchos años, Rose no puede caminar. No se lastimó, no tuvo ningún accidente; es más, a veces, sin motivo aparente, puede caminar de nuevo por momentos y no sabe por qué. El médico, llamado Gómez, cree que el padecimiento de Rose tiene que ver más con algún trauma psicológico que con algo físico y por eso comienza a hacerle preguntas y dejarle tareas que nos van mostrando su pasado y el de su familia. A su lado, casi siempre, está su hija Sofia, producto de un matrimonio fracasado con un hombre griego a quien no han visto en muchos años, ni ella ni su madre. Y en esa soleada ciudad costera, entre una sesión de terapia y la siguiente, Sofia - quien puso en pausa sus estudios de antropología para acompañar a Rose - encontrará la oportunidad de liberarse poco a poco de la sombra de su madre gracias a la aparición, tan inesperada como cautivante, de Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), una mujer misteriosa, intensa, pero sobre todo, libre.
So, yes, there is a romance that arises between Ingrid and Sofia, a somewhat stormy relationship, somewhat clumsy, sudden, where secrets, jealousy, furtive kisses and a liberation in Sofia's case emerge, who lets herself be carried away by what Ingrid awakens in her and that makes her, in some way, carve out her own space too, separate from Ingrid, separate from her mother, separate from her absent father, although contaminated by the shadow of all three. I also understand that with Emma Mackey and Vicky Krieps in the film, how could we not use the image of both of them together to sell the film?
Entonces, sí, hay un romance que surge entre Ingrid y Sofia, una relación un poco tormentosa, algo torpe, súbita, en donde afloran los secretos, los celos, los besos furtivos y una liberación en el caso de Sofia que se deja llevar por lo que Ingrid despierta en ella y eso la hace, de alguna forma, hacerse de un espacio propio también, ajeno a Ingrid, ajeno a su madre, ajeno a su padre ausente, aunque contaminado por la sombra de los tres. También entiendo que teniendo a Emma Mackey y Vicky Krieps en la película, ¿cómo no usar la imagen de ambas juntas para vender la película?
But here comes my question. Promoting Hot Milk as a queer romance would undoubtedly appeal to people who like romance, to people in the LGBTQ+ community, or to people interested in the blending of those two themes, and the relationship between Ingrid and Sofia isn't the central point of the film. So, anyone who goes to see Hot Milk expecting a love story may be disappointed, and by using that narrative in the film's promotion (just look at the posters or synopses circulating online), it misses the opportunity to attract lovers of dramas and psychological thrillers, of which this film has a lot. A lot. The relationship between Sofia and her mother, Rose, a stunning Fiona Shaw, is much more important to the story than what happens and doesn't happen between Sofia and Ingrid. The figure of the dominant and demanding mother, her way of treating her own daughter with inadvertent contempt, and the suffocating atmosphere Sofia suffers from, which stems not so much from the heat of the beach as from Rose's character, is the key to the plot. Sofia's visions, memories, secrets, flashes, and dreams are all conditioned by having been born, raised, and continued to live with Rose. The girl needs to free herself from that burden; she needs to find her own space and force her mother to face her reality and her fears. There's a lot of emotional weight in many of the scenes, and deep and controversial issues are dealt with in an honest way, in my opinion. So why not try to show this in the trailers? Why not promote a psychological drama and not just the romantic element?
Pero aquí viene mi cuestionamiento. Promover Hot Milk como romance queer sin duda iba a atraer a las personas que les gusta el romance, a personas de la comunidad LGBTQ+ o a personas que les interese la mezcla de esas dos temáticas y la relación entre Ingrid y Sofia no es el punto central de la película. Entonces, quien va a ver Hot Milk esperando una historia de amor, puede resultar decepcionado y al usar esa narrativa en la promoción de la película (no hay más que ver los posters o las sinopsis que circulan en internet) se pierde la oportunidad de atraer a los amantes de los dramas y los thrillers psicológicos, de lo que esta cinta tiene mucho. Mucho. La relación entre Sofia y su madre Rose, una impresionante Fiona Shaw, es mucho más importante en la historia que lo que pasa y no pasa ente Sofia e Ingrid. La figura de la madre dominante y demandante, su manera de tratar con inadvertido desprecio a su propia hija, y esa atmósfera sofocante que Sofia sufre y que viene, no tanto del calor de la playa, como del carácter de Rose, ese es el punto clave de la trama. Las visiones, los recuerdos, los secretos, los flashes, los sueños de Sofia, todo está condicionado por haber nacido, crecido y seguir viviendo junto a Rose. La chica necesita librarse de esa carga, necesita encontrar su propio espacio y obligar a su madre a enfrentar su realidad y sus miedos. Hay mucha carga emocional en muchas de las escenas y se tratan temas profundos y controversiales de una manera honesta a mi parecer, entonces ¿por qué no haber intentado mostrar esto en los avances? ¿por qué no haber hecho publicidad a un drama psicológico y no sólo al elemento romántico?
There may be some flaws or details in some scenes or in the script, of course. Almost no film is perfect, but I think the disappointment of those who went to see it has more to do with the difference between what they saw and what they wanted to see than with the film's quality. I saw it in the theater on its release day and liked it, but it wasn't until I saw it again, this time on MUBI, that I found it even better. It's a film that dares to show intense and strong emotions, to talk about illness, death, and a suffocating motherhood, among other things.
Que pueda haber algunas cosas o detalles en algunas escenas o en el guion, claro, casi ninguna película es perfecta, pero creo que la decepción de las personas que han acudido a verla tiene que ver más con la diferencia entre lo que vieron y lo que querían ver que con la calidad del film. Yo la vi en el cine el día de su estreno y me gustó, pero fue cuando la volví a ver, esta vez en MUBI, cuando la encontré aún mejor. Es una película que se atreve a mostrar emociones intensas y fuertes, a hablar de la enfermedad, la muerte y de una maternidad asfixiante, entre otras cosas.
This is Rebecca Lenkiewicz's feature debut, and if her name doesn't ring a bell, then you need to see more movies. Rebecca co-wrote the screenplays for She Said, Disobedience, and Colette, among others, with her crowning achievement being her collaboration with Pawel Pawlikowski to co-write Ida, a gem of Polish cinema. And now, Lenkiewicz has finally dared to write and direct in a more than acceptable debut, adapting a novel by the great Deborah Levy and featuring three very talented and present actresses: Emma Mackey, Vicky Krieps, and Fiona Shaw. The latter gives us an incredible performance, a far cry from her most famous character, Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter saga (did you recognize her in the photos?). Emma Mackey is probably best known for her roles in Sex Education and Barbie, and here in Hot Milk she gives us another very good performance. And if you don't know who Vicky Krieps is, make a note to watch Phantom Thread and Hold Me Tight (one of my favorite performances of hers). In short, we have a director who wrote this script, based on another woman's novel, and brought it to the big screen with the help of three great actresses, giving us a psychological drama with a suffocating atmosphere about toxic motherhood, family secrets, and that includes romance and the search for emancipation... said like that, isn't it a film you would like to see? Se trata del primer largometraje de Rebecca Lenkiewicz y si su nombre no te suena familiar, entonces te hace falta ver más cine. Rebecca co escribió los guiones de She Said, Disobedience y Colette, entre otros, siendo su mayor logro la colaboración con Pawel Pawlikowski para co escribir Ida, una joya del cine polaco. Y ahora, Lenkiewicz se ha atrevido por fin a escribir y dirigir en un debut mucho más que aceptable y lo hace adaptando una novela de la gran Deborah Levy y contando con tres actrices de mucho talento y presencia: Emma Mackey, Vicky Krieps y Fiona Shaw. Esta última nos regala una interpretación increíble, muy lejos de su personaje más famoso, Petunia Dursley en la saga de Harry Potter (¿la habías reconocido en las fotos). Emma Mackey es más conocida seguramente por lo que ha hecho en Sex Education y Barbie y aquí en Hot Milk nos deja otra muy buena actuación. Y si no saben quién es Vicky Krieps, apunten de tarea ver Phantom Thread y Hold Me Tight (una de mis interpretaciones favoritas de ella). En resumen, tenemos a una directora que escribió este guion, basado en la novela de otra mujer, y que la llevó a la gran pantalla de la mano de tres grandes actrices, regalándonos un drama psicológico de atmósfera sofocante sobre maternidad tóxica, secretos familiares y que incluye romance y la búsqueda de la emancipación... dicho así, ¿no es una película que les gustaría ver? ¿han visto Hot Milk?
